This is why I use Linux, Libre Office, Thunderbird, Code::Blocks, Pidgin, FileZilla, Hexchat, KeePass, etc. I maintain methods of physically disconnecting peripherals so that I can control how much a breach affects me. I encrypt my files, I fragment website's data on me as best I can. I want to control my systems, and I won't hand over any control to any company without knowing that they are reliable and on my side. My only exceptions to this are when there is no better alternative, like with social platforms, however I will still support those who protect my privacy, even if it means a loss of convenience.
Thanks for doing this episode, this is something I've often pondered, but never found a simple answer to. Also, would you mind doing a TQ on the Mariana's web conspiracies? I think it'd be a fun episode to watch

The Internet includes Email, File Sharing, Bulletin Boards, Chat Rooms, World Wide Web and other tools/services. The World Wide Web is a part of the Internet. And also Internet and internet are two different things. The capital (I) Internet is the Internet as we know and use it and is a global internet. The lower case (i) internet means a network of computer networks, so even if you only have 5 offices located in 5 separate locations each with their own network of computers and you connect those 5 offices it can be called an internet though of course not on a global scale.

Recent example: My internet provider was attacked by a ddos attack on the dns severs, resulting in most of their users not being able to browse the web. But since only the dns servers were inaccessible, programs like Skype, Spotify, Steam and online games were still mostly usable as they they don't use the web which would require the dns servers. (Ddos: Distributed denial of service, its when hackers flood a site with requests past its capacity making it very hard to access to average Joe.) (Dns: Domain Name System, when you type in say google.com your computers sends a request to the dns server asking what google's IP address is since google.com doesn't mean much to your pc.)
WWW is basically Tim Berners-Lee's implementation of hypertext as a markup language together with a transport protocol. Just to make it completely clear. Also, minus points for not mentioning Xanadu.

Outlook is an awesome well organized and intuitive email service. I used to think it sucks until I got my hands on one from the company I'm working at. It's definitely better than Yahoo or google mail and, at the very least it's way better than that shit for a thing called lotus notes.

Linus is partly incorrect when he's telling that the web usage is slowing down. Ofc there is an increase in mobile and console app usage. But usually these apps make use of so-called web APIs. They don't serve HTML like a website do, but they still communicate over the HTTP or HTTPS protocol. So apps are using the web as backbone.
