Playing this game without a guide was one of the hardest things i have ever tried. Never succeeded, nor do i know anyone who has.
I would recommend trying to go as far as you can without a guide, but giving up and looking for a way forward online will save you literally tens of hours of aimless wandering.

I can't fault someone for it, this game is no joke in terms of open explorative options!

I love this series, first discovered it on the Wii not knowing a thing about it, and found so much pleasure in playing what I had first taken to be a Spelunky clone, in actuality reminding me much more of going through the Kid Icarus dungeons as a kid not knowing where to go and getting lost. I've beaten the first game but never the second, and even though dark souls is thrown around as a modifier, I really find these games to be literally the dark souls of 2D exploration. Excellent, rewarding gameplay for those not easily frustrated. I actually bothered to buy the physical deluxe box-set release of both games on the PS4, despite owning them on the switch and wii. It's quite rare for me to purchase games multiple times, but when I esteem a game so highly, a physical purchase is almost guaranteed. Thank you for your fair review, which didn't dismiss the games based on their difficulty as so many others have done😊
