I like the reviews saying he didn't play 400 hours so he's not qualified to review it. Surely you understand that if he did play for that long the review would be extremely outdated by the time it was finished.
Firstly, no he obviously didn't say or even imply that. Secondly, an 8 is a really good score, and a review is by definition subjective so each person will have their own take on it.

I think his comments on it lacking ambition beyond improving the mechanics is basically saying there isn't a lot of new stuff. Which isn't right since the previously mentioned amount of secrets. But since he probably has found many since it's still so new so he then thought it lacked ambition
Surely there was at least one guy at this company that played the original enough to appreciate what this game brings. He literally tried to jump on a mantrap. NO ONE who played Spelunky for more than 10 hours would ever forget what happens when you try that.
Video Game Music as someone with well over 1000 hours in the original I can say for sure that is not the case but I mean so could pretty much anyone. There are several different paths, each biome is unique from the original and even things such as the moment to moment mechanics are changed. For example The relationship between health and resources is far different and more complex, shopkeepers are slower yet deadlier, the same tricks don’t work and killing one doesn’t change every level from then on, if you are careful it only effects 2, which changes so much of what matters when making decisions. The nonlinear branching paths and 2 different routes to the cosmic ocean add far more judgement calls needed to be made than the originals straightforward yamma route. I could basically go on for another like 6 paragraphs. On top of those more mechanic centric things and basically everything else, you don’t need to look any further than the number of pages in each section of the journal ingame to know that it’s ridiculously massive compared to 1. Whether that’s a good thing or not though is up in the air still

Video Game Music even on face value it’s mathematically huge compared to it 😂, I mean there’s no need to look further than the level count there were 20 levels total in spelunky 1, and in 2 there are 16+ biomes alone, each area containing 1-99 levels depending on which we are talking about.
I didn’t realize that spelunking is so dangerous and yet so adventurous. They should do a sequel to this where the gov’t sends in an elite squad to make it safer for people.

It can be both. It's more of what you love, but at the same time it's not innovative. It's a pro because the game retains the fun mechanics of the first game but a con for those who were hoping for something new.

Thought so too. Its not. It mixes the elements of the 1st and the new game. Its got plenty of new in it to justify it as a whole new experience. Trust me. Its hard af tho

The thing is, I really can't imagine any other gameplay styles that would fit a sequel to Spelunky. While the core concept of Spelunky remains true in this game, it has plenty of twists on old ideas, as well as introducing just as much fresh ones and more, to make it the best, possible evolution for the series. In my opinion anyways.

it is not objectively bc it adds pressure to the calm platformer part giving the game a sense of urgency. and it doesent end the game but makes it harder but gives skilled players ways of abusing it. But subjectively I understand if some dont like time pressure i myself also prefer games without it.

I thought this review was fine. All his criticisms felt valid. Overall very little is added other than new worlds and a new secret path.
Video Game Music as someone with well over 1000 hours in the original I can say for sure that is not the case but I mean so could pretty much anyone.
