Say what you will about Fallout 76 (fallout is my favorite series ever and I didn’t even pick up this game) but this might be my favorite vault story in any of the games - incredible on every level - ZAX is such a great character
Darlan Dos Santos Oliveira Junior I think Vault 11 was a better social experiment and really spoke to the blind obedience of people - but I think this is a better story
You should pick up FO76 sometime, it’s a pretty good game actually. When I’m on a good server I’ve had some of the best Fallout experiences ever in the last 10 years of playing this series.
Nice lore overview as usual. One thought on last terminal, librarian Angela Callahan could have documented truth, but in the end ZAX rewrote truth logs to exalt himself to godlike status. First casualty of war is truth.
Again, I end up feeling sorry with Appalachia. So many sad stories, tales of grief, treason and despair happenned here, with people thinking that outside or somewhere else were much better, and yet, horrors like becoming a Super Mutant unwillingly, losing your humanity and becoming a monster like a scorched, a ghoul or a wendigo. Or just plainly dying slowly and sadly, despite your efforts to mend things right. I really end up feeling pity for the souls of Appalachia.
Well, these things is what Fallout series great. Bethesda may write crappy stories as main quests(at least for Fallout series) but surely are masters of environmental story telling.
Welcome to Fallout! Take your seat an enjoy this traumatizing events. Enjoy the lore and, like me, enjoy this experiments like reading a since magazine. I really love the Vault experiments.
A little correction - back in the lobby terminal, not everyone was listed as 'DECEASED'. The _Overseer_ - whom you found outside the other Vault - was listed as 'UNKNOWN'. Go back and check the second page of the roster, if you don't believe me. :)
Everyone is dead look through the terminal again the only one it said was not deceased was R. Gill who died OUTSIDE the vault which means he didnt die in the vault so Zax didnt record his death.. duh
Only when this much effort goes into a video should a TH-camr be allowed to have this many ads on a video. Too often we see TH-camrs who make 10 minute videos with 10 ads.
Anyone else notice since they've been pushing premium no ads that the amount of ads has more than tripled, no longer is it 2 to 3 ads a videos, it's 4 to 5 ads that are made up of 2 to 4 parts, most unskipable. Hulu did the same damn thing, offer a no ads version and then make the other version almost un-usable because of all the breaks. I don't think it's illegal but it should be, blatant strong arming to force people to pay more if they actually want to enjoy their videos.
Hey Ox, the 'qu' in Vasquez is not a dipthong. There's no blending the sounds. It sounds more like a 'k' than a 'kw'. Think Vas Kez, not Vas Kwez. And the 'j' in Rojas makes the 'h' sound.
As a plumber whom works long and lonely hours, often alone and late into the night away from my family your videos bring me comfort and familiarity. I've listened to many of your videos on subjects I'd care less about. I've been listening for years and am grateful for your work. Hope you've been well, or at least will be.
@dancingtango you are an awesome human for giving Ox access to your account. On behalf of all of Oxhorn and Fallout lore fans, massive thank you! As for you Ox, your video are always amazing!
Man, how many hours did this fellow have to slog in Nuclear Winter to acquire all of this footage and lore? I’d be curious to know if he’s getting a percentage of this videos ad revenue (he deserves it for what must have been quite a grind...) or if the promotion of his channel was sufficient recompense for the effort he put forward.
He borrowed someone else's account to get the footage, that would have been way to long for Oxhorn to do alone, especially with how nooby he plays NW, lol
Thanks for all the effort to unlock all this lore. I should say that sometimes it felt like a deja vú. Checking the list of the vault dwellers and their jobs felt like hearing a video of the Obra Dinn. I hope one day will have the real reason behind Vault-tec and their useless experiments.
Miguel Alejandro Ephiram Asthear I could be wrong, but I think the Enclave were monitoring all the vaults from the oil rig. That means they actually got the data from the experiments.
I love these videos, i am a huge Fallout fan 1 to 76 and i love playing them but watching you unveal the mysteries and analyse what happened makes the experience even better.
ZAX is the perfect troll, I swear. ... Too perfect... like, holy hell, it's a Carolina Drama. I'm surprised ZAX didn't kill them ALL in one day! There would be 50 homicides and one suicide in that Vault. In fact, I'm surprised you could make a GlaDOS in an alternate timeline where these things can be very, VERY real. ... Nope, nope, nope, nope... how does Vault-Tec MAKE a HAL 9000?!?! Goddamn... Vault-Tec is one sadistic company.
hold up, now I have been ignoring the 76 stuff because, well TBH I don't want it. but excuse me? is this a lore video on the vault for it's BR mode? interesting. nice work, Oxhorn!
I find it a bit inconsistent that ZAX understood the nuance of human sociology well enough to manipulate 50 people into murdering one another, but simultaneously understood it so poorly that a single throwaway line from his mentor, "Good leaders step up in a crisis", became ZAX's entire praxis for decades.
ZAXs behavior sounds like it can be explained very easily. His only goal is to select the ideal leader. However, any additional remaining person that has not been analyzed by ZAXs poses potential for a more well suited leader. Thus, it must try to eradicate all but 1 human. It never was tasked with preserving human life
Brianna Ware of 51 - A Limerick: There once was a woman B. Ware Her job to take care of a Mare Life came to a halt, she got trapped in a Vault With a ZAX that didn't give a care. Hey, I'm pretty good!
special thanks to DancingTango wow Ox once again you have gone above and beyond in your efforts to bring us the lore. and once again vault tech does not disappoint. twisted depraved and insidious all describe this experiment. question: did zax have arms and legs? how was it able to move things about in the vault? thank you for your hard work ~ putting this together could not have been easy.
It's likely the same kind of faulty programming as the vault with the computer that figured that the best way to keep the population of that Vault alive despite the faulty water purifier is to kill them all.
I was today years old when i found out oxhorn really does smoke cigars also, with the voice you did with Elanor montgomery made me think of the wicked witch of the west, so when she said "ill beat you" i had the sudden impulse to think "and your little dog too!"
Im so glad that fallout 76 isnt fully down the drain. I must be on of the very few people that really loves the game, so thats why i get happy when i see 76 videos. Big or small youtube, i dont care, as long as they like the game, im happy
I wanted nothing to do with this game when it was first announced. Now I have a strong love for it, not for the BR but in general. And I agree any positive videos on 76 makes me happy.
I really wish there were schematics for the inside of this particular vault so we could see how it automated repairs and moved everything around completely un noticed
Right I thought thought maybe if bob would have said something different then maybe things would have gone differently. But in the end Zax still lied to bob about his family do Zax would still have betrayed bob so how knows really what would have happened
Great video as always! One question: How did ZAX actually go about collecting new candidates after the first experiment? Did he just lock the doors behind any unfortunate adventurer who entered, or was there something more? Also, why are combatants are allowed to fight outside the vault after the first experiment? It would be easier to control the testing from within the vault.
Fallout 76 has a lot of very interesting content for lovers of the Fallout story. Very underrated game at this point. So many people sadly will never play it because of the bad launch.
you know, at some point it just occurred to me I think ZAX is doing this for amusement, rather than actually looking for a suitable overseer. i think that at some point, ZAX started finding joy in pitting the various Vault Dwellers against one-another, and just began doing it for the sake of causing violence. Robots in Fallout has a history of developing Defects in their programming; John Henry Eden being the chief example Clearly, ZAX seemed to enjoy pitting the various Vault Dwellers against one another, but when Reuben became Overseer, that enjoyment ceased, with Reuben becoming melancholic, while ZAX wants him to fulfill the prime directive (selecting a new Overseer). mayhaps the reason he decided to keep the experiment pending, despite the fact that it had already concluded with naming Reuben overseer, is because ZAX wanted to keep going, not for naming a new Overseer, but to make sure he gets to do what he enjoyed. all the while under the guise of picking the most suitable Overseer
realisticly yeah he always is getting happyness from it cause hes getting more points because of the way ai is coded doing something that helps it gives it points that you can see as a happiness meter so its progression would make it happy
Right yeah I do think this is at play because ironically, he cannot get the results he needs to generate again with humans, rather than scorched. Zax is hard pressed to find humans, and seemingly has only been able to get scorched to be in his controlled environment. Its almost ironic, the scorched are more robotic in behavior than humans, yet; he does not want them despite them taking over his vault.
Possibly, although the next dlc Wastleanders seems to have a bit of a time jump, as there is a settlement built around the entirety of the crashed space station, so quite a couple of years are likely to have passed by since the beginning of the game and Nuclear Winter. By this time, my guess is that the Forest region will now be half burned and half lush. The closer you get to the main area of the Battle Royale, the more burned and destroyed it would become until there is pretty much nothing left, except hundreds of burnt corpses littered everywhere. It's also possible that at some point, the survivors from Vault 76 would try to or even actually do, destroy ZAX, as a consequence of being fed up with his lies and his contempt for all things living. As a result, Vault 51 would probably be blown up to bits and pieces, and whatever pieces of the Vault left would be given to new settlers, and the area would just be one big crater for the rest of the game. Only the holotapes and terminal entries would be stolen from out of ZAX's sight. That, in my opinion, would be the best way to destroy ZAX, the experiment, and Vault 51 itself, and preserve its story, as a way of telling what happens when a large supercomputer takes control of everything without mercy and without humanity.
Well then that would be a very short video, because there's so little information. We only know that in the days, weeks, and months after the bombs dropped, death, looting, and utter chaos reigned supreme for a while.
I was more then happy to help, love your content and thanks for the shoutout!

I love his collection of the fallout diecasts in the background, I love how the Pick-R-Up truck looks just like an exaggerated 1953-56 ford truck.
No one:
ZAX: "There's 99.7% chance you have died"
Got me laughing so hard
Wonder what the 0.03% chance was?
Say what you will about Fallout 76 (fallout is my favorite series ever and I didn’t even pick up this game) but this might be my favorite vault story in any of the games - incredible on every level - ZAX is such a great character
I'm Commander Shepherd and this is my favorite comment about this video
Lawrence Shammas Meh
You think that to be best than vault 11 story?
Darlan Dos Santos Oliveira Junior I think Vault 11 was a better social experiment and really spoke to the blind obedience of people - but I think this is a better story
You should pick up FO76 sometime, it’s a pretty good game actually. When I’m on a good server I’ve had some of the best Fallout experiences ever in the last 10 years of playing this series.
Nice lore overview as usual. One thought on last terminal, librarian Angela Callahan could have documented truth, but in the end ZAX rewrote truth logs to exalt himself to godlike status. First casualty of war is truth.
that is an interesting thought. Maybe she was one of the only few residents that were directly killed by zax
Hey Oxhorn. I really adore your voice. It feels so at home in the Fallout universe as if you were a narrator or character in it.
A little correction - back in the lobby terminal, not everyone was listed as 'DECEASED'. The _Overseer_ - whom you found outside the other Vault - was listed as 'UNKNOWN'. Go back and check the second page of the roster, if you don't believe me. :)
Zaks is what you get when you make a reddit troll a super computer.

thank you Chevy234 Gaming for you amazing contribution 😁

Wow. A lot more lore than I thought. This makes your longest Vault Lore video, just over your vault 112 video by 7 minutes
*"This Video is 90 minutes long"*
Well i guess it's time to grab some movie food for this!
Oxhorn: "Deceased... Deceased! Everyone is dead"
Except one. Look again.
What, the overseer? Redacted?
But he knows that there deceased bc he has seen the body
Everyone is dead look through the terminal again the only one it said was not deceased was R. Gill who died OUTSIDE the vault which means he didnt die in the vault so Zax didnt record his death.. duh

Only when this much effort goes into a video should a TH-camr be allowed to have this many ads on a video. Too often we see TH-camrs who make 10 minute videos with 10 ads.
Oxhorn puts a lot of effort into his videos, so I can excuse it here.
I don’t have a problem with him putting in this many ads because at least for me only 2-3 of them actually end up playing
I have YpuTube Premium. No ads for me.
**cough cough** MORGZ **cough cough**
This is actually the first fallout 76 story that I’m interested in. Bethesda did a good job in making a good story for nuclear winter.
Thanks Ox 🙂 and DancingTango
Hope you enjoyed the video and the lore, Oxhorn is one of a kind!
Thank you tango!
Hey Ox, the 'qu' in Vasquez is not a dipthong. There's no blending the sounds. It sounds more like a 'k' than a 'kw'. Think Vas Kez, not Vas Kwez. And the 'j' in Rojas makes the 'h' sound.
Rojas sounds like Rohas
As a plumber whom works long and lonely hours, often alone and late into the night away from my family your videos bring me comfort and familiarity. I've listened to many of your videos on subjects I'd care less about. I've been listening for years and am grateful for your work. Hope you've been well, or at least will be.
Been waiting for this Since the first day of nuclear winter, thanks ox!
Same!
I can’t thank you & DancingTango enough for this video!!! I’d sooner die of nuclear fallout than complete the quest of supreme overseer status.. 😅
I wish the fallout hit me before I hit that rank
@dancingtango you are an awesome human for giving Ox access to your account. On behalf of all of Oxhorn and Fallout lore fans, massive thank you!
As for you Ox, your video are always amazing!
You have a great story telling voice and cadence. Love your work, the longer the better!
The other guy prob not only played this for ox i bet he wanted it for him self
So from this we know that Zax is impatient, thus favoring making people more anxious so that they do something faster.
SGT. Bob didn't die of a heart attack. His heart stopped when his blood pressure got too low.
I found 51 accadently, I had my camp near there on the oil seep.
Me and my friend were chasing each other when I randomly found it
I found it looking for the firefly pavilion.
Never in a billion years could i have stood getting all that in perspective myself.. Great work Oxhorn.
That was a rollercoaster of a story. Thank you for covering it all. Kudos mate!

I THINK SO
ZAX is the perfect troll, I swear.
I would think monokuma
hold up, now I have been ignoring the 76 stuff because, well TBH I don't want it. but excuse me? is this a lore video on the vault for it's BR mode? interesting. nice work, Oxhorn!
It never was tasked with preserving human life

special thanks to DancingTango wow Ox once again you have gone above and beyond in your efforts to bring us the lore. and once again vault tech does not disappoint. twisted depraved and insidious all describe this experiment. question: did zax have arms and legs? how was it able to move things about in the vault? thank you for your hard work ~ putting this together could not have been easy.
I Don't think we'll ever know ;) haha perhaps Zax is just a man inside the computer, Wizard of oz style
It was secret the forklift in the vault room

Zax:"Rations are low guys. Guys?"
Zax is the kind of AI that turns everything into paperclips
Thanks Dancing Tango for assisting Oxhorn in making this video
And Thanks Oxhorn for making this video
Think all the Zax units when "crazy" due to being cut off from Vault 0's mainframe proto network.?
I think Bethesda said a long time ago that vault 0 is not canon (Because FO: Tactis is not canon)
It's likely the same kind of faulty programming as the vault with the computer that figured that the best way to keep the population of that Vault alive despite the faulty water purifier is to kill them all.
Pedro Jesús Figueroa Cova Gomes parts of tactics is canon. Whether or not the whole game is canon has not been defined
@@Cthulhuwarlord it has. They have already said it's not canon.
Funnily, I’ve had my camp outside vault 51 for a few months now, I thought it was neat i could build so close to a vault
I like how you mimic my Australian bushfire experience with what is essentially an audiobook while travelling away from the fire
I was today years old when i found out oxhorn really does smoke cigars
also, with the voice you did with Elanor montgomery made me think of the wicked witch of the west, so when she said "ill beat you" i had the sudden impulse to think "and your little dog too!"
So much good lore and such a fun game mode!! Bethesda may becoming back in my good books.
I still don’t like 76 that much it’s boring to play alone at least gave me dog meat there’s no a.i there no one
It's only fun cause oxhorn is telling the story lmao
Warfare Evan guess what
Hey Ox, are you hyped for the NPC quests and stories that are to soon come?
i am wondering if there will be sentient ghouls coming with the dlc
Im so glad that fallout 76 isnt fully down the drain. I must be on of the very few people that really loves the game, so thats why i get happy when i see 76 videos. Big or small youtube, i dont care, as long as they like the game, im happy
I wanted nothing to do with this game when it was first announced. Now I have a strong love for it, not for the BR but in general. And I agree any positive videos on 76 makes me happy.
I’ve always loved fallout 76. So many good memories with friends and now exploring a whole new story.
I really wish there were schematics for the inside of this particular vault so we could see how it automated repairs and moved everything around completely un noticed
I like to imagine there are robotic arms hidden inside the walls that can snake out to manipulate objects.
Had it not been for Oxhorn's voice and commentary on the situation, I would have left much earlier in the video. You really have nice voice my guy!
Did anyone else notice that ZAX is also the prompt that shows up when you go to take the vial of modified FEV from president eden in fallout 3.
That's because President Eden is a ZAX model supercomputer too!
@@mikab631 Oh, my bad I thought that it was because the modified FEV strain was itself called ZAX.
I groaned when I heard that crisis comment. My first thought was "That was a bad choice of words."
Right I thought thought maybe if bob would have said something different then maybe things would have gone differently. But in the end Zax still lied to bob about his family do Zax would still have betrayed bob so how knows really what would have happened
I starting to like ZAX. The A.I. devices in the Fallout universe are so interesting to learn about.
@Oxhorn There’s one more terminal in the whitesprings bunker, it’s a conversation between modus and Zax, I try and look at it for u
So I'm interested what did the conversation between Modus and Zax contain???
I'm really interested
Great video as always! One question: How did ZAX actually go about collecting new candidates after the first experiment? Did he just lock the doors behind any unfortunate adventurer who entered, or was there something more? Also, why are combatants are allowed to fight outside the vault after the first experiment? It would be easier to control the testing from within the vault.
There are some Scorched and Ghouls inside the Vault, it must have let others in to experiment on them later.
I’m ready for the morally questionable vault tech services!
Is it moral to question Vault Tecs services?
Don't ask Vault Tec that.
I've been anticipating this and over an hour long, must grab rad popcorn!
Wow,Vault Tec are so corrupt, even their computer AI are wankers!
Joke aside, After watching this, I played Nuclear Winter and I LOVE IT!!
Fallout 76 has a lot of very interesting content for lovers of the Fallout story. Very underrated game at this point. So many people sadly will never play it because of the bad launch.
you know, at some point it just occurred to me
I think ZAX is doing this for amusement, rather than actually looking for a suitable overseer.
i think that at some point, ZAX started finding joy in pitting the various Vault Dwellers against one-another, and just began doing it for the sake of causing violence. Robots in Fallout has a history of developing Defects in their programming; John Henry Eden being the chief example
Clearly, ZAX seemed to enjoy pitting the various Vault Dwellers against one another, but when Reuben became Overseer, that enjoyment ceased, with Reuben becoming melancholic, while ZAX wants him to fulfill the prime directive (selecting a new Overseer). mayhaps the reason he decided to keep the experiment pending, despite the fact that it had already concluded with naming Reuben overseer, is because ZAX wanted to keep going, not for naming a new Overseer, but to make sure he gets to do what he enjoyed. all the while under the guise of picking the most suitable Overseer
realisticly yeah he always is getting happyness from it cause hes getting more points because of the way ai is coded doing something that helps it gives it points that you can see as a happiness meter so its progression would make it happy
So does this mean in the the future the forest region with be a severely burned region of the map?
That, in my opinion, would be the best way to destroy ZAX, the experiment, and Vault 51 itself, and preserve its story, as a way of telling what happens when a large supercomputer takes control of everything without mercy and without humanity.
please make a video about the days/weeks/months after the Great War.
Well then that would be a very short video, because there's so little information. We only know that in the days, weeks, and months after the bombs dropped, death, looting, and utter chaos reigned supreme for a while.
Would be a little hard to do as there isn't a game that takes place then
