- After installing a new set of larger tires and or gears with a higher ratio, it is important to calibrate the speedometer on your Jeep JL Wrangler or JT Gladiator. Failure to do so will not only show you going the wrong speed, on an automatic, it will also affect your shift points. That said, the biggest problem most people have with calibration, especially when it comes to new tires, is entering in the correct size. And, this is one of the main reasons why Cindy and I decided to give ECRI a try. In addition to being a budget friendly tool with a whole host of things that you can adjust, it also has an awesome GPS Speedo function that completely takes the guess work out of calculating the actual size of your tires. Awesome, my jeep was a test unit for these a few years back. Will be buying for my jl also. Guy who designed them is good people. Love the pippi series. I think a lot of people underestimate stockish jeeps and esp the 2 door.

Ok, so I went with the ECRI. It works well. It took me a little while to get the exact tire size. I recommend checking your speed via gps vs your speedo when done. For some reason, the first time I used the GPS feature, it told me my tires were about 2 inches smaller than they are. I started over and got it right the second time. Thanks for the great video!

I had a similar experience...but my second GPS calculation increased to a value closer than what I was expecting. Not sure if it was tire pressure building up or what. Either way, this feature made it very easy and was the primary reason I purchased the ECRI.

Wow, such a timely video. I was contemplating getting the Tazer but I’m going this route. I currently have the AEV ProCal on my JL and I swear I’m racking up more miles than I’ve actually driven. This GPS calibration function just sold me. Thank you!
Glad to hear this video was helpful to you. Having run Tazer, Procal, Flashcal, Hypertech and the like, I have to say this was one of the easiest devices I've used to date.
My first car was an old farm truck with a manual trans and oversized tires. Since it had no overdrive and I knew the axle ratio, it was easy to calculate certain speeds in 4th gear (1:1) given tire size, RPM, and axle ratio. I had the RPMs and speeds at every 10mph increment written on my windshield for years. This was all before GPS and Google...all I had was a basic understanding of high school geometry, but I still use this formula to date. Electronic speedos and phone apps have made this so much easier these days.
LOL - the good ol days. For better or for worse, the speedometer reading accurately is important especially on an automatic so that the shift points are correct.
Fascinating!! This reminds me of the old speedometers I have seen on old vw bugs and other old cars and even small motorcycles that have the shift points in the speedometer!!

The GPS function is nice. I had to manually check my speed with GPS and tweak the tire diameter on my 2006 Ram. If ECRI supported my truck I would get one even though I have a speedo calibrator already.
It definitely takes the guess work out.

I really liked the AEV Procal because it’s so simple to use and doesn’t require an app to use.
I've owned several Procals and they worked well. Never liked the dip switches or that I had to refer to their chart to figure out which ones to turn on or off but that's just me. Also, too bad that it doesn't have a GPS speedometer function to help you calculate what the actual size of your tires are. That is after all, the main point I was trying to make with this video.

We have and still love the Tazer we have on our JT and love that it will disable the auto stop start system. It's also nice that you can do all your programming using the steering wheel and your EVIC. However, I personally find the phone app to be easier to use. The biggest difference between the two is that the Tazer does not have a GPS speedometer function like ECRI has to help calculate the exact size of your tires and really, that was the main point of this video. Also, Tazer will VIN lock to your Jeep so it can only be used with it.

I used this on my JL after installing 35x12.50 K02s and on my friend JK after he installed bigger tires. Both times it worked perfectly. I use a GPS speedo app to prove it and it was right on. I also used it to change my gear ratio when I installed Yukon 4.56 gears.

Dude I cut my hand open three different times trying to get to the security module in my JT. Even when I was able to reach them, I didn't have enough room to push the tab a
AND pull them out.
My wife ended up getting them out (woot tiny hands), and I put an extension cable on there so I can grab them myself in the future.
The extension cable helps, but even then, the connectors are super tight and hard to dislodge. I'll be happy when I never have to mess with those things again.
The extension cable is a good idea for sure.
I had a programmer that was $350 and didn’t know it locked to the vin. The Jeep it was locked to was sold and I kept it. Well they wanted $200 to unlock it so I decided to look at other options. I ended up with ODB JScan and I love it. Adapter was $20 and the app was $30. It does a tone of stuff. I was even able to adjust each channel output of the OEM alpine amp. I turned the mids and sound bar speakers down so the tweeters and sub where loader. JScan is also updated about every two week. Lots of functionality added each time.
That's great that you're happy with what you chose to spend your money on but since you seemed to have missed it, the main point of this video was to show how you can "get rid of the guess work" of calibrating your tire size by using the GPS speedometer function on this device. For me personally, that's what makes this a great buy. Of course, that's just me. 😎

My dealership wanted $250 to reprogram my odometer! What? I bought the ECRI for $130 for the Gladiator. Was easy to do. The hardest part was plugging the security connectors back in. Was really no big deal. Went from the stock 255 70 18 to LT295 70 18. What a nice ride!

Looks like a great product. I'd give it serious consideration if I did not already have a Taser. When I set my tire size I used a MPH app on my phone and went for a drive. Compared the speed btwn my JL and my phone and they were the same so I think I got it right.
Tazer is a great tool and we still love ours. The GPS Speedo function on this ECRI does make it really nice as well as not VIN locking to your Jeep.

Ed do you have purchase programs individually? Or is it a one time purchase to gain access to all the different features/ programs? I used the Tazzer to do my tires .
I just placed a flat ruler on top of my tire then measured from the floor to the under part of the ruler. I then used the speedometer on google maps to calibrate it. The first one I was off by a little bit. But was super simple to adjust it. I really do like self calibration tool on this programmer!! Keep up the great work and awesome vids!!
You just have to pay the in app fee ONCE. This will give you access to the programmer on your Jeep. IF you decide to share the ECRI with a friend, they will need to pay the in app fee ONCE for their Jeep. As I say in the video, get enough friends to chip in and you have yourself a real bargain. 😎

It will not. Assuming you have an automatic, it will help get your shift points back though.

Your presentation is excellent. I am saving it for when my 35" tires arrive this week. I know TP has to also be adjusted. I thought I saw on the app that you can also correct this. Is this true?
Setting the correct tire size and gear ratio will help set your transmission shift points as well. However, new gears of the proper ratio is what you'll want to regain lost power.
How long did you wait from when you got your new tires to getting the ECRI? Can I get by without having to recalibrate the speedometer right away? Great video.
If you have a manual, you don't have to do this at all. Your speedometer will just read incorrectly is all. If you have an auto, you will want to do it sooner than later as your shift points will be off as well.

I always attach my battery tender before I do a "write", I have heard that if your battery dies in the middle of programming ("write") a half written file will cause problems.
Can you switch back and forth between 2 or 3 vehicles and only pay the activation fee once per vehicle, or do you have to pay the fee again when you go from the 2nd vehicle back to the 1st one?
Yup, you can do just that and no, there is no additional fee.

Would changing from 245s street tires to 285s AT affect my shift points ( missing 8th gear at highway speeds) and would using this device to change tire size fix that.
Yes, it will change your shift points and yes, something like this will help to address that. However, the power loss you're feeling is a result of your bigger tires and nothing short of a regear will fix that.

Fantastic. I bought a 2023 RAM 1500 and they have Firestone Destination 35 12.5 r20, but factory is 275/55r20. The speedometer is WAY off and the tires are some 3.11 inches bigger. MPH and MPG are way off but im not concerned there. Odometer is way under, as I understand larger tires makes less on odometer. And online videos say it will ruin the transmission. RAM won't callibrate the speedometer, I'm afraid of a 3rd party doing a change. Great video, does this work on a RAM? I called RAMCARE and got a ticket to get the factory size tires from the dealer, but these Firestone are fantastic and I'd rather keep them.
Very informative video! Does the bypass module stay attached permanently?
You can take it off once you're done with programming, but you can leave it if you're going to be using it. A good idea to remove it if you're taking it in for service though.
Like I say in the video, I left the kick panel off because the bypass module can be removed after you're done.
What size tires, what rim size and rim backspacing, what brand and size of lift are you running on Pippy?
These are same as what come on a Rubicon, 285/70R17 but in a Nitto Ridge Grappler. No lift and wheels are factory Gladiator Rubicons.

Without question, I would recommend an automatic especially if you're new to Jeeps. Manuals are fun but they require a LOT of experience and are way more difficult off road.
When recalibrating the speedometer does the computer automatically adjust the transmission shift points to adapt to the new tire size
The shift points are based on an accurate speedometer.
One thing missing from the video was at what point did you remove the adapter and plug the wires back into the Jeep? Was it before you started it or drove it?

Maybe I’m just a it confused, but didn’t you get 33 inch tires? Why would the tire size stay almost identical to what it was programmed when stock?
Because no tire measure what is actually stated on the sidewall.
So is that a one time fee? And would you have to pay that fee again if say you used it on the Gladiator? I really like the GPS idea. Removes the guess work.
As I state in the video, you have to pay the in app fee for each Jeep you connect it to but that's it.
Hi Wayalife , I’m going to change my tire from 285/70/17 to 315/70/17 and my Jeep is JL Q1) shall I calibrate the speedometer ? Q2) shall I do re-gearing ? Or calibration of speedometer is enough ? Thanks
At bare minimum, you will want to recalibrate your speedometer so that it reads correctly and assuming you have an automatic, will have corrected shift points. While you can get by without regearing, you will feel a bit of power loss from the upsized tires. I personally would try things as is before spending the money to regear. You might find that it's acceptable.
Have you tried the tire circumference change setting on your Renegade? Does it work? I see it in the OBD tool for alpha OBD but I don't like changing things in there that haven't been tested because it can act pretty funny until you revert the setting (if you can ) if you're on the fringe.

@@wayalife I'll let you know if I get it to work on my Cherokee. I tried it last night but had to roll back the change because it went into "bricked" mode where it shows all errors. I was able to roll it back , thankfully. For the Cherokee it has no predefined tire sizes. It's easy enough to do the math and enter in the value but it didn't seem to like it being changed . I watch some other videos on the ram 1500 which seems to be sort of similar and they have to do an ABS reset and that sort of thing. Maybe that's the missing link. It's kind of silly that the software doesn't do that automatically- If it expects the tire size to be the same for the ABS settings as it does for the tire settings then why doesn't it just do it when you change either one of them? I guess the vehicle computer software is a little bit primitive, especially when it comes to configurations because they probably think nobody's ever going to change them.
PS , it WILL tell you the current config when you go to change the mm , even if it doesn't show it on the screen right now. I actually never really messed with it because I was worried about not being able to roll it back because I didn't know what the initial value was.. But then when I tried to change it it DID tell me the initial value... When I rolled it back I did have to clear the codes a few times and power cycle the computer a few times. And then it finally stuck... Alpha OBD is kind of like that... Sometimes you have to apply the change a few times for it to stick it seems... I had to do the same thing with my tire pressures... I WAS able to override the default minimum pressure for the Cherokee. It's not the same setup in the Cherokee at all as it is for the Wrangler. The Wrangler OBD setup and support is much much better. The tire pressure settings are in a different location and the tire size settings are in a different location too. It looks like J Scan is finally starting to support the KL but I didn't try their app for thie yet. I'm assuming that some of the differences with the KL (compared to Wrangler) will be sort of similar to the Renegade and the compass. The RAM 1500 videos seem to be helpful. It's not exactly the same but it seems closer than the Wrangler in the OBD setup.
Honestly I don't care about the speedometer because my dashcam tells me that. I'm more concerned about proper shift points although the hike it 9 seems to help with that - only because shift points are a function of throttle position and hike it modifies your throttle position, basically - im sure you get what I'm saying. Throttle controller isn't a bad work around but it could be better. Early throttle releases can cause rough shifts at low speeds still.
Oh heck yeah! This thing is pretty sweet. Do you happen to have any info about if or when there may or may not be updates to include additional features to be more competitive with the Tazer? This looks like a great low cost alternative and thanks for sharing!
Sorry, I don't know anything about things like that as I am not working with ECRI. But, like any app, I would imagine that they would make updates from time to time. Of course, they were really good about getting back to me so a quick email or call to them would probably get you an answer. Heck, I may need to do that LOL

@@wayalife thanks again for this video. I just got this and used it to calibrate my JL. For a data point I’m on 38x12.5R17 Nitto Ridge grapplers on 17x9 KMC 236 tanks. Exact same wheel and tire combo that you had on Jet. It calibrated out to 36.20 oddly enough.
I got that with cruise control at 55 mph. I wonder if I would get a different calibration at a higher speed as the tires might get taller due to the larger radial momentum at a higher speed. Anyways, thanks!

As in, you want to remove the TPMS and turn off the error? If so, yes, this will allow you to do that.

You should ALWAYS bring your Jeep programming back to stock when going into the dealership. This, regardless of what you use.
luv, luv, luv your videos. I just switched from factory 31's to 33's (well.. I think 33's). I was debating between Tazer and Jscan.. Now another to throw into the mix. I do lke the GPS functionality.. that is cool. The Auto Start/stop doesn't really bother me much. Do any of these tools let you bring up the navigation menu.. I find it frustrating when I have my iphone connected and using navigation that the voice always comes out the left speaker and is not that loud. You can adjust the volume when the navigation is speaking. but I still can only get it to like 60%.. I don't know if I actually had the navigation menu if I can change the voice to 100%. If that makes sense. Sorry to be so off topic.
Sorry, don't know if any can do what you're looking for but if any can, Tazer would be it.
Wow, that is a lot to think about. On my old Mercedes 1113 expedition vehicle the speedometer is broke and I uses a Garmin GPS for a speedometer reading. It’s a true satellite GPS and not cell phone. Same thing on my 1988 Suzuki samurai.
Funny, I use my phone as a GPS and it's always been accurate for me.
Does it stay in the ODB port or can it be removed?
I plan on pedal monster and it needs that port.
You remove it after you're done programming what you need.
Just to understand what may be going on here. Does that difference mean your measurement of the hub to ground was inaccurate, or that the calculation the obd is doing isn’t accurate? Or both?
The numbers were slightly off one from the other. That could easily be an error in my measurement as it's difficult to get an exact measurement.
Do you by chance know if the ECRI will work with an Auto Start/Stop Eliminator plugged inline to the bypass module at the same time?

You can also use google maps to check your speed vs your speedometer. That's how I figured my jeep was 4.5 mph slower than it should be.
Yup, that is something you can do but the point of this video was to show you just how easy it is to calibrate your speedometer using this affordable device. That is not something google maps can do.
Any update on shift points? How it’s been running since adjusted?
We have a manual so shift points were never an issue. However, on an automatic, it will correct them.

Can you set Start/stop? I want to set it to off because if you can I am in.
As I state in the video, not being able to turn of auto stop start is a downside to this device.
What does the security block do?
I thought those tires you just put on measure close to 33"? How are they 30.75"? Also why are the original tires showing as 30.63"? That means your new tires are only .12" bigger? Am I missing something?
To be fair, no tires measures what is listed on the sidewalls and the 285 is just considered to be a 33 equivalent. If you ever measure a 33 like I have, it only comes up to being about a 31. As far as the original tires, the 30.63 was what was already in the computer from the factory. And yes, what you're understanding is correct.
Any chance that you did any tests to confirm your speedo is actually correct? Such as run a gps speedometer app, or garmin type device, and compare speed on external device against Jeep speedo? That confirmation test would put this how to video to a 10/10.
I confirmed it with the Gaia app that I have but still hope to test it against a radar to see if there's a difference.
If you disconnect the security bypass module will you lose the settings?
No. It will stay programmed. You should return your settings back to stock before going to a dealership.

As I state in the video, the biggest benefit of it is that it will not VIN lock to your Jeep. Meaning, it can be used on other Jeeps with a $50 in app fee paid for each one you connect it to. Otherwise, as I state in the video and is state in the tile, I really like the GPS speedometer function as it takes the guess work out of calibrating it.

Hello I just went from stock wheels on a 2022 gladiator. To 20x12 /35 and 6 and 7 gear needs more rpm’s to change some time I need to go into manual to change it wanted to know if this will help.
35" tires are larger in diameter than stock and you would need to be running 4.56 gears to get back to stock performance.

How long does the power down part take? Is that based on if you have it set to 45 seconds, etc in the settings of the Jeep?

How does this compare to the Tazer JL?
It doesn't have as many functions as a Tazer and you can't turn off things like auto start stop but it is a LOT more affordable and it has a GPS calibration as is shown in this video.

As I state in the video, it is a more affordable option and it does lack some of the features that a Tazer has. Some that I wish this had too. But, as I state in the video, this is more affordable and it doesn't VIN lock. As in, you can share it with others where as you cannot with a Tazer.
How accurate was your speedometer afterwards?
Seemed pretty accurate to me. At least, according to the speed traps in our neighborhood.

Not exactly. The Tazer can do more stuff but doesn't have the GPS function that this has.
@@wayalife So if I already have the Tazer, what would be the best way to insure my tire size change is calibrated with the spedo ? I've heard of people using Google maps and other GPS apps. Also, can you do any irreversible damage to your jeeps computer system using the Tazer, there is a learning curve using it and I started accidentally changing things.... but the documentation says un-marring reverses all changes... I just get really freaked out when it reboots. ALSO, Thanks for your great videos. They have been entertaining and informative. You helped me decide to Line-X my bed , even after I bought a drop in liner.

I would never pretend to know more than what you can read about on the internet but really, that's about the dumbest thing I've heard. Sounds like a calculation error.

I just ordered a brand new 2022 2 Door Willys wrangler, and how can I disable that start stop feature when I get it, besides pressing that button on the controls every time?
The easiest and cheapest thing you can do is unplug the switch that tells your Jeep when the hood is open. You will get an error code on your dash though. You can use something like a Tazer to do it too.

Sorry, no. Not with the Tazer. What it does is essentially push the button for you every time you start your Jeep. The light on the button will be on but no dash error.
Does the ecri change shift points to improve gpm ?
Any programmer that calibrates your speedometer to match your tire size will help the transmission to shift where it needs to. However, running bigger tires with aggressive tread will NOT improve your fuel economy no matter what you do. Correct gear ratio and correct shift points will help to reduce the affects but that's about it.
Can you do a video of the importance of changing tire size on the computer I keep hearing that the shift points are off when you don't do this procedure making trucks or cars run sluggish can you confirm this I'm running 37s
Changing tire size on your Jeep's computer will allow your speedometer to read correctly and your automatic transmission to a better job of shifting when it needs to BUT, it will NOT eliminate the sluggishness that you will feel with a set of 37's. The way to fix that is to install new gears in your axles. 5.13 is what I would recommend.
@@wayalife I don't drive a Jeep but I love your videos I drive a 2013 Ford F-150 and I do have a 430 gear ratio that day when I was going up a hill and sling sluggish but it was also 100° outside so that could have been also the problem
