Why did the congressi regime not have any declared comprehensive national security policy in the past?

exactly. it would be the stupidest thing ever. when he means in "public" he means with opposition parties. it will turn out to be a donkey doctrine.

RAW would be IPS. Also military has a very different role. NSA needs a strategic overview along withworking knowledge of the entire intelligence and external affairs apparatus. That's why it's either a IPS or an IFS officer

15:41 excellent point. However it seems that India prefers to keep such articulation close to its chest. Perhaps for flexibility that it needs for the fine tightrope walk it has to do to maintain its strategic autonomy. The west does not like this studied vagueness. And that is perhaps another reason to continue with it. 😀
16:01 That’s an interesting proposition. I can’t think of any country doing that as a process or a framework. Can you? It would be interesting to hear you expand on the possibilities of states and political parties being included in the discussions.
Btw, do take a look at the support structure of the two book-cases behind you. They don’t look strong enough to support the weight of books. It gave me palpitations to just imagine all those lovely, painstakingly numbered and labelled books get damaged. 😄🙏🏽

This was an incredibly insightful and thorough provocative piece by Mr Sanjeev Chopra. India has been traditionally very inward looking and reticent about her internal and international views. This is not consistent with her global aspirations and newly acquired status on the world stage. I hope the political establishment heeds the advice that Mr Sanjeev Chopra has provided in this The Print segment.

Very through and thoughtful talk. Hopefully there will be some follow-up by the PMO/Parliment, since in the past our great Babu and Neta class seem to be very selfserving, steering very carefully away from any accountability whatsoever. Publishing a NSP while remaining totally dependent on imports for security related hardware will put us on par with Pakistan, not the USA, China, or Australia. We are unfortunately only talkers not do-ers.

  • @ShadyAJ

Drafting a doctrine and adhering to it, or taking a stance towards achieving the penned objectives are two seperate things. When US talks of its superiority it doesn't mince its words and it ensures to maintain the same by hook or crook. Similarly China is spot on about creating rich nation with large army and so on and so forth...as it strives hard in that direction. Our's on the contrary, whatever exists for now, is more around theatrics and lip service.

Under Ajit Dowel's watch, our relationships with all our neighbours have deteriorated. The situation in Kashmir has also deteriorated to the extent that the EC could not hold assembly elections in Kashmir, nor could the BJP dare to put up a candidate in recent LS elections from Kashmir.

Hope the desired security doctrine is realistic which identifies the long term goals and required resources to achieve them. The doctrine should have a direction but flexible enough to the dynamic character of direct and indirect threats, be it political, economic, social or environmental. The doctrine should not be personality or idiology or ism oriented but exhibit wisdom, vision, inclusivity and realism.
Sure it has to be well debated and so that the intent of the doctrine represents the national character and value systems.

Manu smriti was never the law of the land in India. May be some small kingdom but never the whole territory that is present day India. So ascribing Manusmriti as reason for enslavement of India for thousand years is identifying the problem/issue very incorrectly.

Caste certificates are today given on the basis of Birth rather than merit, as the Verna system was formulated during Vedic times and is part of Sanatana Dharma.
Islamic Bangladesh has more women doing paid jobs than in Manuvadi India, where women are treated as second-class citizens.
The Temple and Akhilesh Yadav CM are washed by Ganga jail, and the laws of Manu Smriti are applied.
