National Security Strategy: A Must Have?

It’s not exactly known whether India has a document outlining the national security strategy but there’s none in the public domain so far. As efforts to bring about jointness among the three Services gather pace, there’s chatter about the need to first get a national security strategy in place. But is that the necessary prerequisite? The presence of such a strategy can’t be the deal-maker nor the absence of it be a deal-breaker for theaterisation, argues Rear Admiral Sudarshan Shrikhande (Retd), a former naval intelligence officer. In this chat with Bharat Shakti Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale, he says India should study the national security strategy documents of countries such as the United States and Russia in depth to imbibe the best practices there and also learn from their shortcomings. Military force is projected abroad. The people in service represent their nation. Thus, in defining operational theatres they must be regions abroad. India should have the following theatre/commands:
--- Cyber
--- Space
--- Maritime roughly within a 3000 km radius of India's southern tip
--- West and Central Asia
--- North and East Asia
--- Rest of world land, sea, air including Africa, South East Asia, the Pacific - which would be responsible for peace keeking, peace making, training other countries and engagement with like-minded militaries. It would second appropriate units from other commands to carry out the engagement with other countries desired by the government of the day - the US does this with its Africa command.
The job of the Army, Navy and Air force will be training, equipping and sustaining units for deployment to theatres, and for preparing service men and women for a post service life.

Now India must have its internal security seriously as adversaries using various asymmetric warfare strategy within india and abroad against india..GoI ignorant and lack idea to tackle quickly. Manipur and many states facing such problem. Meanwhile Modi & co. hiding behind bush. Beyond rhetoric, need some quick action and quick command and control. Here govt missing in action shifting goal post. We are not here to listen problem from govt. We wanted to see best solution made quickly.

While these discussion are good but we need to come to term that WISEST decision are not always taken by military..
see for example Rifle saga..
When world is transitioning from 5.56×45 to 6.2x51 our great generals decided to go back to 7.62x39 which was discarded by soviets (not russians) due to AOA, stopping power, range, weight & performance issues.
Also we were rold that sig762x51 will be given to frontline soldier even then without scopes whats the value 762x51 bring when you can shoot only to the level you could see..
Seriously there is enough of army generals mediocrity their procurement need to be questioned, grilled & approved by MPs..
& Also to these so called defence journalists are you just here to pass on the message don't you guys questions mil. For their stupid decisions..
