No female rock voice can come close to Ann Wilson. Heart has some unreal music. Their tribute at the Kennedy Center to Led Zepplin and Stairway To Heaven just gives you tingles.
Ann Wilson has said in interviews, that she has maintained her voice in part by NEVER smoking, vaping, or even (IIRC) drinking. She is truly an absolute treasure of Rock & Roll.
@@chrismorey6592 She could have said it. I wasn't questioning your honesty. I was wondering if she was talking only about hard liquor or something. It doesn't sound very scientific. Smoking absolutely damages vocal cords. She was right about that.
Heart's performance of Stairway To Heaven from the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin is incredible and has John Bonham's son Jason playing drums. It even made Robert Plant wipe a tear from his eye. I love it when you react to music from my era (late '60's - early '70's)🙏✌️
Ann Wilson is still amazing to this day! Loved heart in the 80s too but she had a hard time with her weight gain and bastard record company wanted sister Nancy looking like a 1980s sex kitten. So happy for them they came thru it and are still rocking to this day!
I'm a huge Heart fan. I saw them 10 years ago. They did Led Zeppelin Immigrant song. Blew me away. Ann is so amazing. Plus Nancy is my favorite guitarist and my inspiration to play myself. When she came out and did the intro to Crazy on You I literally cried. Love love them!!!
Yeah, that was around the same time I finally saw them live. They were opening for Def Leppard. Both groups sounded no different than they did back in the 70s/80s. Awesome concert. My second favorite concert only behind finally getting to see AC/DC live, on their Black Ice tour. I grew up in the 70's and 80's but did not get to see many of these bands until 2000-2019. Needed my own disposable income first.
Arguably the best female rock voice of all time. Heart always made a tour stop near me in Florida every year and I've been fortunate enough to see them in the 70's.80's. 90's and numerous times in the 2000's. I saw them at the Rock Super Bowl at the Tangerine Bowl /Orlando in 1977 and at the King Center in Melbourne fl a few years ago and like Alexis said you could close your eyes and marvel at how her voice has stood the test of time. Seeing her perform Stairway to Heaven at the age of 65 says it all. Legendary
Sad to realize the very same stuff they went through in the 70s they also went through in the 80s with how the record company treated them and used them. The newer song by Disturbed with Ann shows she still has it and she is as beautiful today as she ever was.
@@flickeringboxofficial Hahaha! Nice try...........not a drummer. Keyboards and vocals and music writing. And also not a vegan...........and, just because, "you're".!! Hahahahaha! Great reaction though guys. xx
Mike Derosier does not get nearly enough love. Rock solid with some really tasty fills. Every bit as responsible for the band's success as any of the rest.
I smile as I go back in my memory to the first time I heard this song at a teenage party in 1979. I have been hooked ever since. And, aye, that lady is the standard against which all other female rock singers are measured
Ann Wilson is best female rock singer of all time, she's a total badass, there are a lot of female rock singers out there now but they can't hold a candle to Ann. Hall of famer, sweet mama Jesus!!!
Gretchen Wilson does an outstanding cover of Barracuda. Her performance with Alice In Chains was off the charts. Extra-crunchy and harder rocking than the original.
Heart's debut album captured a lot of fans for them. The second album Little Queen that Barracuda came from showed that they were a power to be reckoned with. My wife is from a small country town. This is the town that we got married in. Barracuda was a big hit at the time and my best man and I just cruised through the streets of that little country town the night before the wedding blaring Barracuda over and over again at the highest volume. Got married the next morning and my wife and I went to see Heart playing in Houston that night. I have seen Heart at least a dozen times over the years and that voice never fails.
Although I was a teen in the 80s, and enjoyed my MTV, New Wave, and nearly all of alt. rockers from Britain, it took me a while to warm up to Heart's new sound and image. Their 70s output was just so classic and revered, then they suddenly re-burst onto the scene all glammed up. Looking back, they really helped make the 80s, the 80s. And I think they had one of the best comebacks in rock history, this side of Tina Turner.
My absolute SECOND favorite female vocalist of all time(only to Joplin). The pure talent and power of her is legendary, as it is DECADES long of performances.......please take her down that Rabbit hole of FEMALEs in ROCK. There's so many.....❤😮😊
As you mentioned, this was basically about their record company's publicity department seeking to "use" the lesbian rumors to sell records as opposed to quashing those rumors. That's mainly why they left that label.
I first had seen Hart in 1979 at the !st Texas Jam 1979 they had just opened up and had done 2 songs the wind kicked up form a summer storn behind the stadium Ann quickly turned talked to her band for a min to change the line up. It was so windy it was hard to hear when the song started but Nancy was playing her guitar that lead into Crazy On You I will never forget it best intro to a song hands down. Rocker till the day I die!
Annie Wilson is tied with Pat Benatar, in my opinion, as the two greatest female rock vocalists, period - full stop. And honestly, Nancy is probably in the top five in my book. The fact the Ann can still go out and belt this catalog out is simply amazing. I do think that in the more recent clip of Barracuda, they were playing transposed down a third or a fifth, but at 73 years old, who cares?? To echo some of the other comments, the Heart cover of Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors is a must see!! Love the channel - keep introducing Alexis to great music, Burch!!
First saw Heart in 1976 or 75 when they were touring Canada with April Wine in my hometown, Kelowna B.C Canada 🇨🇦 Yes the ladies were gorgeous but all so very talented!! I was 17 at that time
Awesome song. Awesome band. Probably among my top 5 favorite bands. That being said I've seen many reactions on this performance and it seems no one has noticed that this is the studio version synced with the performance. Their first 4 albums may be of my top 20 favorite. Have to think 🤔 on that. DREAM OF THE ARCHER also a great song from this album and similar they do a AWESOME cover of THE BATTLE OF EVERMORE by Led Zep. Great Stuff!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Every time I hear a guitar riff like this it reminds me of horses galloping off into battle. Iron Maiden has a few tunes where a heavy guitar riff reminds of this as well.
So just in case you noticed how some of the visuals didn't quite sync with Ann's voice what was going on was that the original studio version was in fact dubbed over this video. Although they had originally recorded that song live something happened to the audio and after about halfway through it sounded warbled and it wasn't enjoyable from that point forward so it was synced as best they could with the studio version. That damaged video is also out there if you search for it. Shout out to the band as well as the Wilson sisters, kick ass rock at it's best.
It was a combination -- their original label did some sleazy marketing that they were justifiably angry about, then at some show, some radio promoter made some remarks playing into what the ad implied. Ann wrote the lyrics back in her hotel room that night. Musically, they were definitely leaning into the Zep influence on it ("Achilles Last Stand" comes to mind).
Having seen Ann Wilson live with Tripsitter a little over 2 months ago, I can verify that her voice still packs the same punch as always and, although she may break on stage more often during instrumental interludes, she puts on as great a live show as you'll ever see. P.S. I definitely join those who urge a reaction to 'Stairway to Heaven', from the Kennedy Center tribute to Led Zeppelin. As you've done the music video of 'Alone', I'd also encourage you to react to some of the more recent performances of that song, both with Heart and Ann's solo projects, in which she does a more stripped down version that really brings out the poignancy of the lyrics.
There is a reviewer here on TH-cam called The Charismatic Voice who does a breakdown of all of the points and abilities of Annes power range and control in this song/ video.. It's worth a look.
Get her reaction to Crazy On You with the full Nancy intro! And then Magic Man! Those are their earliest hits! I used to watch them at clubs in Seattle in the mid seventies when they were a Led Zeppelin cover band, then they moved to Vancouver BC and started releasing their own music! Saw them recently on Kelly Clarkson Show still going strong!
For rock and metal I had like four songs that would teach me "or try to lol" how to up pick and chug an E string. Oddly not a metal song, but this was one of the songs, that a ways back I thought "I got to learn that riff, and to up pick" lol. Cool song.
You have to check out PLUSH's version of this song. Moriah Formica is the only singer that can come close to Ann Wilson. They are releasing a studio version of it in about a week
This is Heart at their most iconic rockin' stage. Both Ann and Nancy just fantastic at a time it was primarily a male dominated genre. But they showed the nay sayers that they not only belong, but also dominate. Unfortunately, they tended to overshadow the rest of the band who was outstanding in their own right. They have re-invented themselves a couple of different times, especially going into the 80's when hair bands were coming in.
They are both considered the Mother's of Grunge. Bands such as Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone and Alice and Chains were extremely close with them and often went to for guidance and support. If you look into what would be deep cuts from many of those bands, the two were often somewhere in a track with many grunge bands.
Ann in her 70's and her new band performed for close to a hour at 2022 Waken Open Air concert. I have same birthday as her and Garfield the cat but I am 9 years younger and I am positive that I couldn't do that.
Both Ann and Nancy are incredibly talented. Ann's vocals are absolutely top tier. Try their "Crazy On You" 1978 Live performance so you can see Nancy's acoustic guitar intro. Their 70's work was stronger overall when compared to their "corporate controlled reimaged" 80's years. Their first 5 albums are full of hidden gem after gem. Their 80's albums had some strong songs, but each 80's album as a full compilation just didn't pack the same "quality punch" IMO.
Nothing like that song or that band... ever... since! Tight isn't even the word for that band. The songwriting and singing... impeccable. Zep can't touch that!
@@ZFlyingVLover I'm not measuring by quantity and Zep was untouchable for what Zep did. They were Plant, Page, Bonham and Jones doing what PPBJ did but, they are not the Wilson sisters, DeRosier and company. It's not a better or worse comparison. It's about an impeccable originality. Heart had their own sound and their own songwriting style which Zep would not be able to do better. The combination of musicianship in Heart achieves a tightness and energy, demonstrated by "Barracuda", that Zep never matched. Both are great and tremendously unique.
Song written by Ann and Nancy Wilson together with guitarist Roger Fisher and drummer Michael DeRosier in response to their old record label Mushroom records placing an ad implying Nancy and Ann were lovers.
Despite knowing the song, there was one time it was used in a TV commercial and for some reason, that opening riff made me think of some early Judas Priest. Very 70s.

Not hard for me to believe. When I saw them live a few years back Nancy sang a song or too and she still sounded just as good as always, she's always had a lovely singing voice almost on par with her sister's IMO.
It is amazing how much they slowed the tempo in that second live performance. From a drumming perspective, it is a very aggressive quick tempo in the original, I wonder if they slowed it down as they all aged due to stamina.
