Ann gained weight and they focused on her sister for the video. For some reason that was an issue. Ann was super thin the first part of her career, maybe that is why they focused on that more?
According to Ann she was starting to get panic attacks during live performances during the bad animals tour (which featured their new hit song Alone). Her sister would keep her focused to keep her composed enough to finish the tour.
I always thought she was beautiful at any weight.

Even when Ann was at her heaviest, she was still one of the most beautiful women in the industry. Her talent outshines all of that then and now. She and her sister are still beautiful and have more talent in their pinky fingers than alot of these industry pop machine turn outs they pushing on the radio these days with autotune.

Ann Wilson is the Aretha Franklin of rock. She is peerless. No one has the resonance, depth and power Ann possesses. She's 73 and can still bring the roof down. And yes, Ann in the 70s was a visual rock goddess. Her genetics caused her to gain weight in the 80s and she was maligned and mocked, etc. by the industry. I was so pissed off about that. Such an incredible talent. BTW, I've met Ann and Nancy many times over the years and they are lovely people. Very nice and they love and appreciate their fans. 😎🤘🎤

From what I understand, Nancy was PISSED about the final project how they shot her and Ann in the video. She said Ann was constantly pleading that the corsets they had her in were way too tight and it was hurting her.
After I was discharged in the Navy (I was stationed in Washington state between November 1991 & September 1993), I lived in Seattle for another 6 years and my first job out of the Navy was a rental car agent at Sea-Tac International Airport and had the pleasure of meeting Ann Wilson in person. Not only was she so damn nice, but as a gay man, she was so damn beautiful!!
Thank you for bringing light to what they put her through in the mid to late 1980s!

Ann Wilson has always been beautiful at any weight. This was the height of MTV and a music video could make you or break you (just ask Billy Squire) and was just as important (maybe more important) then the song itself. I was probably 14 when this came out and even I picked up on the way the video was shot, especially when you compare it to the way Nancy is shot.
They did a lot during their 80s comeback that they weren't comfortable with, including the glam look, working with outside song writers, and having the production on their albums being more pop like. When they play those songs today they usually rearrange them to make them sound less pop and more rock. The 80s were pretty much the only time the band gave in to pressure from the industry. I'm sure it was a bitter sweet comeback for them.

I certainly don't mind their griping about the sound, the writers, the costuming etc. But have they returned the fame and fortune earned because of that sound, that writing, and that costuming? I agree, there comeback probably was bittersweet. In fact, I think they said as much on the Vh-1 Behind The Music documentary. I believe the metaphor was "It was like we were on boat floating away as we looked back on our artistic selves standing at the dock." Well, life comes with tradeoffs. They made theirs. It gave them some, but not all, of what they wanted. Such is life.

It's not really as "sad" as you put it. The times were different back then. Skinny, well built woman were what was considered "attractive" at that time. The 80's were all about an "image". But, today is a different world. An alternate universe... if you will. Now, nearly everyone is overweight. And, it changed the general publics perception of what is "attractive". There are times throughout history where "big" women were considered attractive. And, times where "skinny" women were. It ebbs and flows. It's not "sad". It's human nature evolving with what it has to work with.

Regarding how Ann Wilson was shown in the video, it reminds me of Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips, who had to go through the same treatment. Chyna Phillips was usually front and center in their videos then look at how Carnie was shown in "The Dream Is Still Alive" which she does lead vocals on.

Definitely introduce Alexis to Heart's "Stairway to Heaven - Kennedy Center Honors," but make sure it is the FULL 7:59 version since there are some chopped versions. Their first #1 hit was "These Dreams" where Nancy has lead vocals. As great as the studio version is, I highly recommend "These Dreams - Live in Seattle" as you get a better feel for Nancy's vocal range, along with it being a great acoustic version of the song. And finally, in regard to Nancy's excellent acoustic guitar work, the opening guitar solo on "Crazy on You" is all Nancy.

It's amazing that you touched on the weight thing...I remember how it pissed me off SOOO much! I have seen Heart maybe 5 times, the last time was Ann (no pun...) alone...solo tour. I remember one tour during that low part you spoke of, Kansas opened for them...but the arena was only half full. But both bands kicked ass and got ovations. But that is the first time I saw that she had gained weight, it surprised me, but didn't bother me...what did was the guy behind me making fat jokes half the set. She was still beautiful...with the voice of an angel. To me she has ALWAYS been beautiful...Nancy too...both still are. Fun Fact: Ann played the flute like a beast!! Did so on the first few Heart albums.

Nancy Wilson is a VERY underrated guitarist. Some of the greatest guitarists in the world have spoke of her talent.
There is an album that is fully accoustic called “Heart - The Road Home” where they slow this song down a lot. Also an amazing version of this song.

The Kennedy Center Honors performance was in 2012 when she was 62. She and David Draiman just did a duet on Disturbed's album, "Divisive," that came out in November 2022, though. Check it out - the Queen still slays in her early 70s!

You've teased Kennedy Center Honors, now you gotta do it.
In interviews Ann, and Nancy, said they were terrified doing that cover. They'd been covering Zeppelin for years. In fact I saw them do "Rock n Roll" as the last song of night on the day Elvis died, August 16th 1977.
These Dreams feature Nancy singing lead.

There was an interview many years after this period of their career where Ann & Nancy talk about how they were handled at this time. It was the 80s and image was everything in the still fairly new world of MTV and music videos. They were literally told by those in charge that Ann had the face and Nancy had the body and they were going to be marketed that way. Mind you that they were both in their mid 30s by this time and they decked them out in current 80s fashion and loaded on the makeup. They created a new image in lock step with the times and they brought in outside song writers and not only ressurrected their career but raised them to even higher levels. They regret the fashion and image part but they still embrace this song in particular as on the level of their 70s stuff.

The absolute best of the best female artists. Ann and Nancy absolutely mesh perfectly. Ann’s voice is unsurpassed. Many greats out there (Pat Benetar is a phenom) but Ann’s range is amazing.
I remember the comments about Ann’s weight. They can kiss my arce… just shows sex appeal sells. She was devastated but the strength this woman displayed by not caving in to the pressure makes me love her more.

I saw an interview with Ann and she was told that she had the face and Nancy had the body so they shots them that way to make it more "appealing". They're so good you'd think that they wouldn't have to put up with that. After all, the fans didn't care because the music was awesome.

This comment comes a year after you reacted, but since you were discussing the treatment of Ann, I have an example I wanted to share to illustrate that it wasn't just super stars like Ann, but women in general in the 80's. Heart was my favorite band and Ann my favorite vocalist. I worked hard as a singer, and went to an audition and was asked to sing Straight On by Heart, which is a seriously hard and high song to sing. I killed it, Mouths dropped! People surrounded me, amazed at my vocal chops..but I didn't get the gig. Why? Because I would t have fit in the size zero outfit. So, it didn't matter how great I sounded, but rather they were disappointed I was too fat. I was around 125 pounds! That was the 80's. Nancy as phenomenal a guitarist and singer, she was put in a corset with her boobs out and thrown out on stage like a pornographic Barbie doll, while Ann (in one video) was hidden by oil drums and a welders mask (which considering how absolutely beautiful she was,) was devastating to Ann and Nancy. Just wanted to color in the era for us women singers back in the day.

These women were Queens Lita Ford, Ann
n Nancy Wilson, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks. Because in a male dominant genre of music they were the trailblazers for Front Women for Rock music. They stood in front of criticism and naysayers and belted out Rock music and gave a platform for future Queens in the Rock Genre today. Lzzy Hale, Amy Lee, Cristina Scabbia etc etc

Ann and Nancy Wilson. No one can come close. You need to show the early days to explain their history! Teaching the young of real talent without technology! The 80's made a machine out of Heart. Hear their stuff live today will make you absolutely weep..................ok now...as I'm watching more...you are filling in this history. Show the early stuff!

:smiles: Oh how this takes me back so :) Whenever my wife and I were out driving and we had Heart on the stereo and this song was on we both used to sing a sotto voce response to the "How do I get you alone?" line ... "Just ask!" :D Back in her younger days Ann Wilson was the very definition of female beauty to me and my missus knew it :)
And Nancy is without doubt one of the greatest rhythm guitarists of her era (note I don't say generation as she spans at least two!)
