    BEST: enable eye detect for the EVF and set the quick sleep mode ON.
    GOOD: Use S-AF and Silent Shutter (beware rolling shutter)
    GOOD: Set sleep timer to 1 min and auto shutoff to 1 hour.
    OKAY: Dim EVF and LIVE VIEW display.

    Thanks again, Rob. I'm watching your videos and always have the feeling of learning quite a bit in a short time.
    Yesterday I thought that I have to do some work on my own and read some chapters in the PEN F manual. It was soooo boring and the explanation was not really good at all, e.g.on just two pages there were about two or three cross references to other pages that I should read to understand the the one thing I was looking for... at the end I finished reading and was hoping for a video from you ;-)

    Thank you Rob. Pleas , how to overwinter(save for a long time) the Olympus BL-1 batteries (charged-discharged-half discharged) ? .Thanks in advance for your knowledge.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Christine. Charge them up first then simply keep them in a cool dry place. Never leave them in the camera. When you're ready to use them again, charge them back up before putting them back in the camera. I keep mine in a plastic box in my home office. Be careful that the pins don't touch each other if storing multiple batteries.

    The battery meter on the EM-1 is the achille's heel of the Olympus system, in my opinion. There's not a lot of resolution in terms of going from a full battery to nearly dead and the point at which it starts flashing red to warn the shooter of an almost dead battery is not very accurate. Olympus has vastly improved this, however, on the E-M1 Mark II with v2 of the firmware. Other than that, I've been extremely please with my switch to Olympus. I love the compact size and the build and optical quality of their lenses is top notch. The micro 4/3 system has improved my photography exponentially. Why? Because now I carry my camera with me a lot more often when I'm out and about because of the huge weight savings.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I found my imitation batteries die very quickly after the meter turns red so I really have to pay attention. I'm enjoying the m4/3 system for the same reasons, the huge savings in weight/size. Thanks for the feedback!

    hello .... is the battery warm when using the Olympus OMD em10 ii. ???? is this an affliction of this model ??? or any defect.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That battery can get warm but not hot. This is normal. Generic batteries get warm but tend to swell over time. Once you detect any swelling, dispose of the battery immediately.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't recommend them. They don't have nearly the rated amps claimed and they tend to swell. Soon as they are completely dead, I'm never buying them again. I bought the wasabi and kastar brands because they came with a charger. The chargers are fine.

    The battery of my Olympus it been getting harder to fit, what I mean it does not goes in and comes out smoothly inside the camera compartment. What does that mean? Is it expanding? Can the battery explode?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it's expanding most likely due to heat. Yes, it can explode. This is typical of generic batteries that are overcharged and/or have poor chemistry. I would recommend original batteries only.

    Thank you very much for this video. I just received an Olympus OM-D e-m10 mark II camera from the US. I live and work in Saudi Arabia. Will the power supply provided with the camera work with 220 Saudi voltage? Should I just plug it in and let it charge or do I need to find some special cable/adapters?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Should be fine. On the bottom of the battery charger it should say input "100 - 240V".

    • @wahabdilawar
      @wahabdilawar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rob Trek That's exactly what it says. I was a little reluctant because I have already broken one electric appliance from US, when I plugged it in to 220V. I will definitely charge it tomorrow. Right now its 2:15am here.

    Is that a lens hood on your kit lens? The one thing that I find annoying about sleep mode is that with the power zoom, the current zoom level is not maintained upon restore power up, requiring yet more battery usage to get back to the same zoom position. Thank you for your very extensive videos, they are very much appreciated!

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have a rubber lens hood for my kit. Fits perfect. Also, try going into the AF/MF menu and scroll down to "Reset Lens" and change that to "OFF". Your power zoom should stay at it's previous zoom, focus, and aperture before the camera went to sleep. Thanks!

    In my EM1.1 menu is a setting "Half Way Rls With IS". By default it is set ON. So every time I hit the release button half way the IS is activated. For example when I awake my camera that is in the sleep mode I also apparently activate the IS specially if camera is hand held. I often "search" for a good picture or composition by viewing through the camera EVF and I tend to hit rls button to get focus. IF the setting is set OFF IS is activated only when you actually release the shutter. I believe this might have some affect on the battery life.

    • @laurent5926
      @laurent5926 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also agree and this option set to ON prevents from finding the best composition quickly due to the action of the stabilizer. Many of my stills were not properly aligned with the horizon with this option set to on. Question of practice, probably.

    Sony has one advantage with the lens motor...because that is not one..it's lens focus motor is in the body...it has that little flat blade that hooks into the lens from the body.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The motor drive was generally slower to focus and noisier if doing video.

    On your Amazon page, you feature Kastar batteries and chargers. In reading reviews of some of the other brands of chargers and batteries, there are several comments about the number of contacts on the chargers, specifically there being only 2 contacts on third party chargers compared to the 4 on the Olympus branded one. Do the Kastar models have 2, or 4 contacts? And is that really important? Have you experienced any problems (swelling, over-heating, short lifespan) with the Kastar batteries?
    I know it's down to personal preference, but from your POV, is a USB version any handier than an AC version charger?
    While researching other cameras prior to purchasing the OM-D E-M10 II, I saw a "dummy battery" that could be inserted into the battery compartment of the camera (non Olympus) and then connected to a portable power bank. Do you know if there's anything like that for the E-M10 II?

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say almost all generic batteries only use 2 pins and any other visible pins are on them are fake or sending fake information to the camera. The 3rd pin is typically for relaying the battery heat to the camera and charger. It is not critical to the function of the camera, but does affect the longevity and performance of the battery. Overheating causes the battery to swell and can be dangerous potentially causing it to explode! The primary cause of overheating is usually the charging process. Battery chargers have their own overheating detection circuit. However, this is not as reliable as a battery's own overheating circuit. Also high demand on the battery from the camera like when recording 4k video and hot summer days can overheat the battery and cause swelling.
      As for performance, be wary of batteries that overstate their capacity. Avoid any battery that claims 2000ma when the oem is only 1100ma. As for the kastar that I use, they did swell up after about 1.5 years of regular use. I chucked them. Also, they didn't take as many pictures as the original. I replaced them with some other generic brand because they are so cheap compared to the oem and I just cary 3 extras with me. As for usb chargers, don't get the quick charge versions and don't charge in the car on warm to hot days. Otherwise they should be fine. I use them almost always.
      As for the dummy battery, have not found one for the em10-ii.
      The best way to charge batteries is at home using the original charger and batteries. Using a generic usb charger should be fine and I've never had a problem. Using generic batteries is a gamble and I'm rethinking my recommendations on my Amazon page as I research this more. For now, I look for batteries that state very close to the oem battery capacity and I hear the Watson brand deliverrs similar performance to oem.

      @@RobTrek Thanks, Rob! Very useful information. Thank you.
      I like that the Kastar ultra fast charger shows the voltage and percentage of charge, unlike the original Olympus charger. Is it worth taking the chance on it? Or just stick with the original Olympus charger? I doubt I'll ever need the fast charging, but there's that nifty display. ;)

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been using that exact kastar charger for 2 years now and it's great! And just like you, I love that display. It also will wake up dead batteries if they have been left in storage too long and totally depleted. Never happened to me, but nice to know it has that feature as well. If you get the kastar batteries with it, just chuck them after about a year if they start to swell. I've been charging my Olympus original batteries in there no problem and they have never swelled. I'm sure the original batteries have a better gas venting system (which causes the swelling) and higher quality battery chemistry. The other thing to note is the battery level (such as it is on Olympus cameras) is not reliable with generic batteries. If you see the red 1 bar indicator, the battery can go anytime after that. With my Olympus originial, I consistently go 20-30 minutes after that.

    • @johnpalmer9839
      @johnpalmer9839 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RobTrek Thank you again! Got another question for you about batteries. A couple of reputable places say they have original Olympus batteries, but the mAh rating is different from what the GetOlympus site states. 1175 from Olympus vs. 1210 at Amazon. B&H has the 1175. Your thoughts, if you don't mind?
      BTW, there's supposed to be a full moon tonight.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always bought my Olympus original batteries from my local camera store. I'd trust B&H over Amazon but recently heard a story from Fro about fake Nikon batteries at B&H. Supposedly it wasn't their fault and it was remedied.

    Great Olympus tutorials. While using an E-M1 ll how do I setup and use lens profiles and for what purpose. Thanks so much.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try and do a short video on it, but lens profiles are used to add exif data (lens name and focal length) about the lens to the image file (jpg and raw) and also tune the IBIS to work with the lens. This only applies to lenses that don't already have the exif data programmed and shared with the camera. Most modern m4/3 lenses do have the exif data, so setting up a lens profile is not necessary. The 8mm & 15mm body cap lenses are examples of modern lenses that don't have exif data because of the lack of electrical contacts to communicate with the camera. You usually only have to set lens profile data when adapting vintage lenses. Thanks for your question!

    Seems things are getting really complicated...with WAY to many choices...The menu systems on most of the modern cameras are like 5 deep...While I do believe more is better in camera's..it seems to be getting out of control..All of them settings just to take a pic...Alot of photos I take are a very quick impulse..and trying to get it set on the newer camera's are making it very hard to do that...I guess this is why you use what panansonic calls Set 1, Set 2, or Set 3 in the custom setting which is on the command dial.

    • @RobTrek
      @RobTrek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like all the settings. Helps me get the look I want in camera. But it would be nice if they had a simpler mode setting so people can learn photography vs learning gimmicks.
