  • The guys and I set out to test our gear and our mental fortitude with a winter overnight in subzero temperatures! This trip pushed us to our limits and was incredibly difficult, but we still had a great time backpacking, hanging out, eating delicious foods, and enjoying the great outdoors ... a perfect example of Type-2 fun!

    I love the beauty of camping in the winter, but this trip really made me appreciate the gear that I've acquired over the years ... it makes trips like this safer and more comfortable! Be careful when you head out into subzero temperatures, and always be ready to turn back if an emergency situation comes up.
    Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the shout out. I hope you enjoyed the brews. That sunrise was pretty epic through the trees. I think this trip can be summed up with the saying, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."

      Thank *YOU*! And yea ... this one was a tough one, but it's good to challenge yourself once in a while ... although, next time we may not go so hard ;)

    Another awesome video! I spent last weekend training Boy Scout leaders how to do winter camping. Always a great time! You guys always make me smile.

    Thanks for sharing another adventure. Congrats on your new low temp camp. I did a hammock camp one night down to -15f, slept fine but getting things packed up was brutal for this old guy!! Keep the adventures coming!!

    Wow...I am so impressed with your adventurous side..the fresh snow is beautiful but it has to take a whole lot of mental prep to snowshoe like that in sub-zero Temps and then to sleep over...its gorgeous but I'll leave that all up to you lol.

      LOL yea, it's a different kind of fun, and it's definitely not for everyone, but it was a good time overall ;)

      Coldest I've camped in, but yea, that sunrise and the amazing peace was worth every bit of effort to get out there! Welcome to the community!

    Wondering how you did with the dogs overnight? Mark usually has Daisy on the ground with him but what did you do with your husky? Winter is a fact of life here in NYS. Makes sense to get some experience with camping in snow and cold.

      Daisy slept inside the tent, inside the lean-to with Mark. I have the @dutchware pup tent for Korra -- it hangs off of my hammock suspension and gives her a pyramid to sleep in. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough training at home with it, and she wanted nothing to do with being in the pup tent. Thankfully, Mark is the best and he had Korra sleep in the tent with him and Daisy. All-in-all, it worked out ... just need some more training and hopefully the pup tent will work out ... if not, we'll figure something else out because she loves backpacking!

    Love that trail. My avatar was taken at the lean-to shortly after it opened. That's quite a haul. Good on ya!
    Did you check out the NPT creek crossing? I was curious if that was feasible in the winter.

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The creek was flowing and even in the temps we had, it seemed like the ice wasn't 100% ... Dan and I chatted about it, and we were glad we weren't faced with the need to cross it. Not saying it couldn't be done, just wasn't something we would do.

    Will you and Korra be testing out the Cave Creek Pet Palace? I think it's a much better setup than the Dutchware Pup Tent since you and your dog are in the same space together. It seems like Korra didn't like being separated from you and my dog is the exact same way. The Pup Tent was a no-go for my dog but she loves being in the ground tent or in the Pet Palace with me. It's definitely worth the weight, too.

      I recently picked up a Lanshan UL3 to see a.) if I can find a comfortable way to sleep on the ground, and b.) have Korra contained by me. She does not necessarily need to be right next to me, but she definitely is free spirited and may wander if not contained in some sort of tent ;)

    Yup, you won't do that again. Haha keep it under a mile and your good to go. More than 2 and its not fun anymore hahaha.

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      LOL I think it all depends on the trail, but a good mile or 2 hike in with the heavy sleds is probably the right answer! Either way, we did it and had a good time ;)

    How do you poop in the woods if the ground is frozen?

    • @JayMorrisonOutdoors
      @JayMorrisonOutdoors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Quickly ;)
      In all seriousness, there's a privy at this lean-to, so Dan took a few moments to stamp down/shovel a path to it from the lean-to, and we were all grateful!
