    Its back up!
    Big Thanks to Seth MacFarlane (on twitter) who stepped in (after you guys brought it to his attention) and got this back online after FOX TH-cam bots had incorrectly blocked it worldwide!

      that is awesome - he obviously cares about the fans (and reads a lot of the comments......for sure.....as you could watch the tone of his interviews change...from early on before the show premiered ...to what he says now......and it was definitely based on some of the points that came up in various discussions on TH-cam and elsewhere) - - hes making this for the fans...I think even if the network hadn't picked it up - he was prepared to just put it on Netflix (but Fox was like - stick it on the network) - hes obviously making this because he knows there are a ton of us out there that just want some variation on all the Trek (and sci-fi in general) that existed prior to the reboot (though - Nemesis was sort of a precursor to that.) - good stories that make you think and feel.....I hope he makes 200 episodes (!)...

    • @gregkarris6869
      @gregkarris6869 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Awesome! I hope that if Fox cancels it due to "poor critics' reviews" or "poor viewer ratings" that they'll put it on Netflix (or Hulu, HBO. or Apple's new service - as long as I can eventually get it on disc) - it deserves to continue...

      You can feel the love for Trek and science fiction in The Orville.
      That's what's missing from STD. I hate to say it but there is sort of a corporate feel to STD, as if it's made by folks punching in elements from whatever show they think people like. (There is so much Game of Thrones in the show.)

    • @tacotoosday42
      @tacotoosday42 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      STD only focuses on one character at least the original focused on three. It feels like the abramverse nonstop action stuff. The few scifi idea stuff surprised me tho

    so i think the main reason why people had this issue with Orville at least at the beginning of the season is Fox was pushing it as a non-stop laugh festival. Its not. Its got a lot more laughs then your average ep of TNG or DS9 but its of the same family you could say. I think now that people are seeing it with the rest of the episodes together, you get a better feel for the show as a whole.
    Better then the first season of TNG.

    • @brasswirebrush
      @brasswirebrush 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The first few episodes are actually really slow for a comedy. I understand why the critics rated it so poorly if that's what they were judging on. The most recent episode was good and by far the best one so yet.

    • @toransilverman
      @toransilverman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. I think the critics are watching this show thinking its a comedy, not a sci-fi show.

    • @Call_Me_Matrix
      @Call_Me_Matrix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not hard to be better than TNG season 1.

    • @Sarazoul
      @Sarazoul 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. The trailers and adds are very miss leading. And it doesn't help that in every add there segway to A family guy add.
      Seth himself said that he hates that everyone thinks that this just a satire of Star Trek.
      It's not. It's an Homage to Star Track (Specially TGN, which was Seth's favorite ark). With yes. a little bit more light hearted.

    • @toransilverman
      @toransilverman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @geomundi8333
      @geomundi8333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they don't capture what star trek was about in any manner; its just explosions for the dummies who like star wars.

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not. It's pretty fun, but it remains a cheap ripoff with some smart stuff and some other stuff that simply cheap non creative writing. Discovery is a great show, and in a whole different league. Maybe not typical Star Trek, but still great.

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matt Fors I don't agree. I like the action in Discovery and I like the way it looks. I like The Orville as well, and towards the later era they told some great stories. But people were saying from the beginning that it was great, while it was a cheap rip-off and had some really dumb ideas like the egg hatching and standard divorced man tropes.

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Matt Fors Well, we don't have to like the same things. I like how Discovery is different from TNG, which I haven't even watched (before my time), but I don't think it would attract the same amount of viewers. They need to make money. Action scifi sells better than more elaborate stories let alone philosophical based stories. Look at the Expanse. One of the best scifi shows ever, but almost got cancelled. When they were going to make Discovery, an Orville like show would never have gotten approved for that budget.

      Is it just me or is STD really confusing? Everyone blames the first officer for the war even though a few people on the discovery where present when the klingons began firing. Don't they get testimonies from people present before the court marshal?

    • @gametips8339
      @gametips8339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yea it is, very confusing. I personally think STD would do well without having that dimension alltogether. It just make it confusing and less believable imo. I get the character creation and why they did it but it is just not my cup of tea.
      I will continue watching STD because i love the theme and hopefully they do well but Orville just hit the spot for me much much better.
      So i hope they both do well :).

    Let's say it like it is:The Orville is a loveletter/hommage/parody of everything people loved from the oldschool Star Trek series of the 60's/90's,made by people who are Star Trek nerds themselfs and including many of the old writers/producers.
    It's a show,made by fans for fans.
    STD (seriously,nobody noticed this?!) is a generic,grimdark,''pew pew'' Space Opera,with crappy acting,writing,characters who shits on over 30 years of continuity and canon,ruined one of the most popular alien races,in this franchise and is the total opposite of everything that Star Trek stands for.The CGI looks great,I give them that,but that's about it.
    And to add insult to injury,they put on a paywall,in order to actually watch this shit and the producers/actors are spewing SJW-bullshit,in order to promote this trainwreck.

    • @notmyrealname7738
      @notmyrealname7738 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      IMO Orville is a remake of the original 60's show, with its camp humor but serious storylines mixed in, Very original star trek.
      STD is a remake of JJ Trek, which is a remake of Star trek Movies, which is a remake of the original star trek series. AKA its a recycled peice of junk, with lens flares.

    This is why I 95% trust User Scores over the site's few "critics" score. Too much shady shit going on in the background to keep relationships friendly with the companies they are suppose to be critiquing, unbiased. Only times I trust the User Scores less if it's still fresh and not a lot of people have added to it yet, or if it's being noticeably review bombed because the company did something questionable. Even then the bombing tells you something is going on with the content.

    • @jamesoren7238

      I agree - it's like I would nearly always trust box-office numbers over oscar nominations lol. But there is one MASSIVE exception - super hero movies.
      Man if we're being real, even those of us that grew up with superhero comics/cartoons/movies/whatever and cherish them... like the worst superhero movie to the best one is really objectively like between 6/10 and 9/10 lol. None of them are 10/10, barely any are a 9.. and none of them are below a 5 if you're being objective. But every time a superhero movie comes out, the nerds get on IMDB and it's either 9/10 or 1/10 opening week, whilst REALLY, really bad films you turn off half way in and regret even torrenting sit there with a smug little 5.5 on IMDB

      I don't normally go in for conspiracy theories, but I'd say that CBS has been beaming some extra cash into the pockets of some of the critics. It's one thing to sue and essentially shut down a fan film for putting up competition.. It's very different to do so with a large network that is very comparable to their own in scope. So they've got to try to discredit vs directly trying to shut it down.

    The thing i have noticed the difference between The orville and Discovery is that The Orville has actual Character development, there are small scenes that build on relationships and personalities, So far Discovery has done very little to build that level of character, pretty much everyone on the USS discovery is a dick.

      I like Orville more as well but it is not true that everyone on Discovery is a dick.
      Burnams roommate is just lovely and there are neutrals.
      You have to keep in mind the position in which the ship and crew are, it is war and the show takes itself realisticly. It is not fun when people are getting killed left and right.
      As for Orville, its light i like it a lot but it would be a hard sell to claim it is realistic.

      +Game Tips
      Michael's roommate doesn't belong as crew on a federation ship, let alone THIS ship with THIS captain. She's the character that would typically be engaged to a transporter technician or whatever, and would react poorly to seeing what life on the ship is actually going to be like...Her character seems wholly contrived for the express purpose of not having every single person be insufferable and mean spirited villains.

    • @gametips8339
      @gametips8339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +George
      Why would she not belong. From what i saw the ship is full of kind of brilliant but also messed up people. And she is both brilliant and messed up, just in a different way than most other crew members are.
      If you ask me she totally belongs.
      Anyhow even if she does not belong she is not the only non dick person. The doctor is a cool dude, and it turns his mate, the lead scientiest is fine as well. Sure at first it seams like everyone is a dick but now that some characters are developed and we see more motivation behind their actions we see they really are not. Well a bunch of them anway.
      War is a dark grimmy gloommy place so yea... its suposed to be like that.
      Not really my cup of tea but still. It fits.

    i liked the orville and STD for the most part. i understand what discovery is trying to do. my main problem is the way it just destroys canon. particularly with klingons. they dont look like klingons, they dont act like klingons, none of their tech resembles anything klingon. klingons were a deep culture with a huge, lived in, realistic feeling culture, with an incredible and iconic design and STD just said " nah, they do this now."

    Orville >> STD.
    Orville isn't Star Trek, but it has the heart and soul of Star Trek. Star Trek Discovery is missing that, and is an empty shell because of it.

      Orville wants to be Star Trek, and it could have been, the idea was pitched to CBS, but they didnt wanted it. they should have called it space hike. its offbrand star trek, but the quality is there, the orville plot and writting are better than alot of voyager episodes, the only thing voyager has going for it is the stronger cast, but you can hardly beat mulgrew and picardo, those to are realy realy good actors.

    The show is one of the if not the strongest show for FOX in terms of ratings for years. It's quiet amazing. And yes, this show is fantastic, the 6 Mission Trailer took out all the jokes and that trailer is amazing. I think even FOX now thinks "okay, this is not just Galaxy Quest, we don't need to push the humour all the time and can show that this show has a serious aspect and that aspect is great".
    Regarding the ratings: It's really weird but the same thing happened with the Warcraft movie, people really liking it and critiques hating it. I think it shows serious issues with a huge bunch of people in that business, who aren't doing their job really. I mean the reviews reviewed 3 episodes of The Orville and they didn't even did it in a good way, I mean they didn't understand the third episode which is quiet amazing. They talk about gender issues even though the show was way more about how cultures treat differences and their children. So they obviously didn't really watched that episode but still used it as a reason to rate it very low.

    • @esecallum

      I just hate bad writing to move the plot along. 1. How did the Klingons know who Lorca was and where and when so they can magically appear in Federation space to capture him. They can't find the Discovery but they can find him in a shuttle? Why did he have the meeting in person leaving his ship behind? Why not bring the ship or holograph his presence? If the Klingons can just appear where they wish, why not blow up the star base with him in it or capture other staff at the meeting who seem to be based there? 2. How does Harry Mudd know Lorca's history but a Star Fleet officer does not? 3. Klingons now eat people and in this episode shag humans, openly on a ship of war, (battle cruiser, bird of prey, prison ship... make up your minds!) 4. So Lorca knows how to fly a Klingon fighter and evades several other fighters with expert pilots at their helm and somehow runs into his ship that happens to be in a position he knows nothing about in foreign Klingon space? 5. No one knows the Dr. and Stamets live in the same quarters? 6. Lorca killed his entire crew so they would not be tortured and humiliated and that was OK with the admiralty? Well, I guess it saved them from being eaten too then and I am sure the other Capts. followed suit, not? 6. So the Discovery did not destroy the Klingon fighters (Why didn't they?... fighters are way easier than birds of prey no?) ... so if the spore jump drive was a secret... it sure as heck is not now. 7. Saru deducing that a lead Klingon fighter had to be Capt. Lorca instead of anyone else is just plane ridiculous.

    The Orville deserves to be on TV. And we need it. We need the hopeful future shows. Now more than ever. ST Discovery? Has nothing for me. In fact I wish it was taken off TV. The characters, the storyline, everything about it is distopian and conflict. Characters that hate each other, argue, and are unsympathetic for the audience does nothing for us as a culture. We DONT NEED more division. We DONT NEED that reflected in our fantasies, our fiction or our mythos. Its tearing us apart. Drop it. LONG LIVE THE ORVILLE

    Agreed by ep 3 this show really showed they can deal with some serious issues like old TNG did. This show just keeps getting better with every episode. Also think of the enterprise as the A+ students they are very proper and polite rarely do they screw around. The Orville crew are more the C students who party and do stupid sh@t and have a good time. Picard loved Shakespeare, Sisko loved baseball, Kirk old earth junk and what does the Orville's captain have on his desk. This won me over entirely. I also think the first seasons of everything after TOS have been pretty bad compared to the rest of their runs seasons 2-3 and they get in their grooves.

    For ppl that don't know Seth McFarlane went to CBS to pitch this show as a new star trek....they said no and went with what we got for discovery. Seth took his story and concept to fox and they said yes. He added parody into it to fall under fair use since it was essentially star trek. The amount of former star trek people working on Orville is amazing. I mean u had Commander riker direct ep 5 for example. From what I've read it seems the critics expected a space balls type parody show for star trek....they get it didn't go hard enough into the "family Guy" star trek that they seemed to wish it was....maybe they wanted a parody like when family Guy did star wars....but Seth is a huge star trek fan and he wanted to make a real star trek show for years, he is completely series in making a good star trek show, the parody is there for legal fair use reasons but it's not suppose to be like Spaceballs. They handle some serious issues and topics in the first 6 eps

    The Orville is preferable to STD mainly because even though it's still got a fairly liberal viewpoint, it's more the centrist liberal viewpoint of the 60s-90s; it's mercifully free of the kind of insane modern "social justice" cult preaching that saturates STD, as well as nearly ever other product of the entertainment industry these days.
    Also, just on its own terms, I think people like it because of the relatively small-scale focus on telling simple stories, with proper character development and a good ensemble cast. But the CGI can be impressive too at times - the big space battle in Season 2 was really rather good.
    Even the wonky balance of humour and drama is sort of charming, you get used to it and eventually find it quite homely and comfortable, and the lameness of some of the jokes is part of the fun.

    The Orville is a hybrid of TOS and TNG. It has the simplicity and campiness of TOS and the beautiful aesthetics and positive , optimistic vision of TNG (and Voyager). Star Trek fans love the positive, optimistic vision of the future where humans have evolved beyond greed and hate, and have also evolved interpersonal relationships. This is where TNG excels, but the Orville is making a good attempt. Dark, pessimistic shows are a dime a dozen...they are almost every sci fi show now... they are boring and suck the life out of you. LOVE THE ORVILLE. ALSO, BRING BACK TNG!

  • @kimp7160
    @kimp7160 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The humour I like best is what sort of pokes holes into the perfect humanity that Star Trek: TNG presented. One moment the driver guys were complaining how bored they were scanning a new part of space where every single person on the Enterprise just loved nothing better than to explore and philosophize. This crew is still human even with the changes to technology and society. They can be brats. But they're still loyal and have good hearts. And the robot is a jerky version of Data. Not as interesting, but he does have the almost innocent arrogance that comes with perfection.

    Anyone that doesn't like the Orville just doesn't have a natural and normal sense of humor, those that don't like the show must have an engineered sense of humor, false and only good for being a professional critic.

    Season 3 is halfway through airing now and it’s brilliant. Very surprised they haven’t returned to watch and review. It’s well worth a weekly talk

    What the critics fail to understand is that real life is a drama, but there is a lot of humor too. So the Orville creates (in some ways) a more realistic future than anyone in the past.

      In a way I envy you because you are seeing STD with no expectations. The thing is though, if you ever do binge watch the shows at some point in the future, you will understand that STD is not Star Trek. It's a sci-fi show that slapped the Star Trek logo on it. Star Trek has also had an optimism that simply isn't shown on this show.

      I have not yet met a star trek fan who actually likes discovery but I guess it is possible. As someone who grew up watching star trek tos, I despise STD it with all my heart. I absolutely love the orville!

      Don't get to put off by the comedy aspect. Part of it has to do with not getting sued. (Comedy Spoofs have more lead way,). If you pay more attention to the storyline and there crew interactions I think you will enjoy it. (Assuming you liked TNG and TOS)

    I really didnt think Star Trek could work in the modern age, that kind of genteel hopeful vision of the future has sadly faded. But Orville found a way to make it work. The future is hopeful but the people in this show act like real people. They make inappropriate comments, they make jokes, they have affairs, they laugh they cry they sometimes dont get it right. And thats wonderful because it makes the audience CARE about the characters. Just like TNG it makes us want to go on an adventure with these characters.

    Orville rocks! Good review. But I suspect you (and pretty much everyone else) has the Krill kid dynamic backwards. What I expect to happen is for one or a few of the Krill kids to start questioning the Krill dogma that only Krill matter (and have souls). Perhaps some start or join a resistance against the official Krill position, and something like a Krill inquisition comes after them for heresy. At that point perhaps the kid or kids or some of the resistance appear at earth and ask for asylum, which they easily get. But then Krill warships arrive and threaten to start an all-out war against earth unless the kids are returned (before or after asylum is granted). From that point on they would go in any of several directions.
    Perhaps at the end they get a guarantee from the Krill not to harm the kids, but then as soon as the kids are delivered to the Krill they are instantly killed... perhaps while on-screen during communications to deliver a strong message to earth that "we do not tolerate you getting into our own business". Then perhaps the cliffhanger is their conversation that goes something like "we cannot tolerate this", "but this could become a huge war", "we can't just let them get away with this", "what are we doing to do?"... and fade out.
    What would they do next season? Perhaps they'll create a parallel to something warlike in STD... but then resolve it in a minimally violent way the next season to rub the whole "we are the real Star Trek" into the faces of the writers of STD. That would be awesome!
