  • Why do the Kaminoans have nostrils?
    Why do they see in UV?
    Why did you make me research these freaky fish people?
    From the water world of Kamino, the minds behind the Clone Army of the Republic have a long past with genetics and their own struggles at a near-extinction level event.

    Fun fact: There was a Kaminoan Jedi in Legends named Kina Ha who was given a millennia long lifespan through genetic augmentation. She helped cure the accelerated aging of Clone Troopers affiliated with the Mandalorians of Clan Skirata.

    The UV vision might have been added to allow more visual info to be perceived in Kamino's frequently cloudy environment, considering a higher percentage of UV light goes through clouds vs visible light. There might be more UV light hitting the water than visible light.

    When I first saw Episode 2, I assumed that the Kaminoans were in league with Palpatine. I thought they were going to reveal that the Kaminoans replaced members of the Republic Senate with clones who voted in line with Palpatine, giving him the power to become Emperor. It would have been cool of they had done that.

    • @MandalorV7
      @MandalorV7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      KingOfMadCows I can see your point but it also lessons one of the main themes in the movies. The Republic willingly embraced the Empire. Yes Palpatine pulled the strings, but people willing voted him in to office.
      Fear was the main tool Palpatine used to influence people.

    • @KingOfMadCows
      @KingOfMadCows 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MandalorV7 but that was not well developed in the film's. The Republic didn't even want to create an army until after the war had started, not the actions of people who were afraid.
      Also, Palpatine gained power through trickery. He gathered support by doing "the right thing." But he specifically engineered situations where he was "forced" into making the "hard choice." Like how he was against war but he manipulated events so that the Republic was drawn into war and he was "forced" to become a war time leader. Also, since he controlled both sides of the conflict, in the end it didn't really matter who won. If the Republic had decided against using the clone army and lost or chose to surrender instead of going to war, Palpatine still wins since he's secretly controlling the Separatists.

    It's a shame Lucas felt he had to mess with it. Do you remember the scene where the kaminoan woman turned around to leave Jango Fett's quarters? She had this wonderfully light multicolored skirt, digital of course, that caught every current of air and made lovely ripples in the fabric as she moved. How many hours of programming went into that? It was only in the theatrical release.
    And Lucas just took it out of the film before it hit video.
    I bet he has a version with the scene included in a copy in his private library.

  • @patrikhjorth3291

    Nausicaans, please.
    Also, the idea of "superiority" can take many forms. It's quite possible for the Kaminoans to accept that they depend on others for resources while still considering themselves superior in other ways, such as spiritually or, indeed, genetically. The arrogance of a supposedly "superior" culture doesn't really need to be based in objective fact.

    Kamino may be home to deep sea benthos that use UV light for communication similar to certain earth lifeforms. The ability to see these would have given pre historic kaminoans a significant advantage over other predators who may lack the ability to detect U.V light.

  • @t3tsuyaguy1
    @t3tsuyaguy1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We have species here on earth that can see into the ultraviolet spectrum. The examples I'm aware of all have to do with pollinators and the plants they share a symbiotic relationship with. As I understand it the ability to differentiate to see in color across any particular band of the EM spectrum evolves when those gradients will be valuable. Perhaps their food source or predators were better detected by individuals who evolved to see into the UV.

  • @sergieghalliwell8753
    @sergieghalliwell8753 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm thinking the nostrils may be a vestigial aspect that has not been selectively bred out or modified in their genetic code, as they also dwell outside of their ocean world. For the UV seeing I'm guessing this is useful in other situations outside of their home world, they probably keep it as it is not a common trait in their universe. This would make sense since they feel superior to others and being able to see UV helps them justify that superiority.

    The kaminoans look very much like our modern era depictions of tall gray aliens, and their backstory also sounds much like what some people theorize the motives of such aliens are in abducting people and visiting. The two stories fictional and real or not seem to be very similar. There are similar themes of cloning, survival through genetic manipulation, and the merciless arrogance to see other species as tools for their science, even the idea of improving others through genetics.

    UV Sight is rather common in legends:
    scifi.stackexchange.com/a/81446
    Apparently those species can color their ships in UV color paint, resulting a coloration that humans can not see. Every species without UV sight just sees the white baseline color.
    However it may also be beneficial for some genetic engineering parts. Similar to a dark room - just using UV instead of Red lighting.

    The Naasicaans. Especially given the DS9 episode of Klingon mutual aid involvement. Much to the chagrin and horror of Federation onlookers, after a critical battle, Mortog brazenly complimented the Naasicaans on their tactical efforts in that moment of interstellar diplomacy, and offered the entire species empirical [something like equality for them.] The non-xenophobic moment was downplayed majorly due to the fact that Kling and Naasic are often seen as the enemy of the Federation. For STO advocates however, these are our allies and crew members in galactic defense who we rely on a daily basis in the 25th C. Hey, the enemy of my enemy is my friend and the True Way are extremely problematic for the Alpha and Beta quadrants alike, to say nothing of Gamma, etc. That shameless act of non-xenophobia by [was he chancellor by then?] General Mortog is of course one of many such exemplification on Star Trek, and that sounds like a very long video Ric!!!! In today's time though, perhaps a much needed critical analysis.

    The thing is, if it wasn't for Disney's BS Power Grab...everything in the Expanded Universe was considered canon. It wasn't Legends before Disney proclaimed it to be so. I SO wish this video could have been made back then! Yes, I'm still VERY salty after what Disney abolished, so there wouldn't be a "canon" source to contradict their BS about a Dark-intent Force Witch (Nightsister), who were HUMANS, somehow giving birth to and raising a Dark Side Zabrak (Maul). If you want more on my reason for loathing Disney's establishment of the EU as "Legends" and non-canon, read The Courtship of Princess Leia.
