  • The Suliban are a species that has suffered a tragedy in their history with the destruction of their home planet. At a moment of division, another future power interfered with their timeline to make them a proxy in the Temporal War.
    This is the Cultural Index a series aimed at exploring various Science-Fiction species.
    For outsiders to a series to get to know the basics and maybe even hardened Sci-fi nuts might discover something new.
    Thanks for watching!

    This really puts into perspective why most of the other powers, even the benevolent federation puts a hard clamp on the use of time travel. All it takes is one bad choice or series of bad choices to screw up millions or billions of lives.

    I love that link with the Republic. If someone ever wrote a story about the Republic, the suliban could play a good part in it. Forging the alliance of romulans, remans and suliban into the Republic against the tal shiar would make for some epic writing.

    If, when doing your Elorian video, you just say, "The Elorians are race of listeners. They... listen" and then go straight to the closing music, that will probably earn you some additional respect from me.
    ... dang, it's still a few weeks till April 1st, anyway.

    I have a theory based on beta canon, but in Star Trek Fleet Commder, the story mode happens in the Kelvin timeline in which it happens before the The Federation and Romulans have had former contact, so generic Romulan commanders outside the Star Empires boarders are Suliban, implying the Federation Romulan war when there was no visual content with the Romulans and so maybe Feds saw Suliban on their ship instead. So the Romulans used the Suliban as proxies so they could still remain a mystery until "Balance of Terror".

    One of the most interesting things about the Suliban for me is that they apparently have the tech to fire while cloaked. In "In a Mirror Darkly", the ISS Enterprise is seen firing torpedoes at the Tholian Web while still cloaked.

    In STO Pro Consol D'Tan gave a seat in the Romulan Republic Senate to the Suliban so those living in Republic space had a voice. Same with Acamarians as their territory is completely surrounded by the Republic. I guess D'Tan did this to not give the impression that the Republic was conquering or putting down other cultures that called that part of space home. The Suliban I believe also helped the Republic build their Mol'Rihan shipyards. He wanted peaceful cooperation. With the Suliban being a part of the Republic now with the Romulans and Remans many STO players have been asking for more Suliban characters for their Romulan playthroughs.

    • @michaelgreenwood3413
      @michaelgreenwood3413 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same reason why I've varied up my STO Rom crews with Deferi and Acamarians. RepublicShips wouldn't be all Reman and Romulan crewed after all. The flagship'shead science officer is a Deferi.So i'd imagine there's shortage that're there to "Help the Republic with Balance." Sadly can't pull off Suliban, but I suppose it would be possible to pull of a Romulan/Suliban hybrid though.

    I want to hear more about The Doctor's (USS Voyager's EMH) mobile emitter and why it was that in no scene in the alternate future seen in the series finale "Endgame", he never was seen wearing the emitter
    I've heard that Starfleet confiscated futuristic tech and presumably, The Doctor's 29th century derived mobile emitter so how was The Doctor able to move around on Earth without one

    I like to think that the communications array in Voyager was made by an advanced sect of Suliban who went out, and got lucky for a while, settling down and advancing for a while.

  • @richmcgee434

    Trek may not think so, but spheres are the best possible shape for a ship if you're trying to maximize volume while minimizing overall surface area - and surface area is directly related to how much mass you'll need to put in to radiation shielding and armor. That doesn't make the best shape for all a ships - an agile combat vessel might want a wedge design and try to keep its narrowest profile (and most or all of its guns) pointed at the enemy, for ex - but spheres are very good for haulers that are looking to maximize payload or defensive combat vessels that don't expect to outmaneuver their enemy or expect to be outnumbered regularly.

    I like that the Suliban weren't monolithic. Like, you had the bad guys in the cabal, but there were lots of Suliban of different stripes. Plus Silik did always have a strange sort of adversarial charm I feel like lol. Thank you for yet another fun and informative video!
    Stay well out there everybody, and Jesus Christ be with you, friends. :)

    I have been roleplaying suliban in STO for many years now. I stick to the lore we have for them in regards to the republic and treat their attempts at forming a unified suliban government as one that is an unofficial protectorate of the Romulan Republic

  • @boobah5643
    @boobah5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Whether the Suliban deserve any credit for the technology derived from their future benefactor depends on how stupid that benefactor is. A smart one gives them plans for devices they can build with the tools they have, or starts with iterations of tools that can be built with their current tools so they can build the device the benefactor wants them to have. In that case, the Suliban are just doing paint-by-numbers.
    If the benefactor is stupider, he gives them plans that they can't yet construct and no way to build the intermediate tools so they have to adapt the principles to what they can currently produce. Time to hope future guy bothered to explain how the device is supposed to work. But if the Suliban get the tech working in this case, they deserve some credit.

      The Suliban Cell ships were balanced compared to 22nd century ships. The were faster than Warp 5 (They ran down Enterprise several times and I think Warp 6 Old Warp scale (Warp 5 TNG)). Despite the technology which is clearly more advanced than nearly everyone else...the Vulcans, The Xindi etc can outrun them. Weapons wise the Cell ship alone would be of little threat to an NX Class or any Cruiser....however in large numbers they could down just about anything. To me it seems their equipment while extremely advanced has been tempered to prevent them being too strong militarily (They have energy weapons only - no torpedo weapons like Photon Torps)

    Perhaps the Suliban use lots of circles in their art/writing and spheres in their ship design because they lost their home world - which, like most planets, would have been a sphere.

      I prefer to think that their homeworld was somewhat ironically shaped like the head of Iggy Pop.

    i always find it odd, if you can send information back why cant you send a transporter signal back, please explain!?!? and dont just say "plot"

    • @boobah5643
      @boobah5643 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because sometimes (depending on the writer*) transporter beams contain matter, too.
      Besides, we already know that a warp capable ship can travel in time by interacting with a sufficient gravity field, whether that be a black hole or a mere yellow dwarf like Sol. Looking closely at time travel plots/techniques in _Star Trek_ is a wasted effort. Time travel is easy, can be done by accident, and doesn't require any special hardware beyond the warp drive you already have.
      *Yes, that's just another way of saying 'plot.'
