Beautiful job filming and editing your stay on Riverlander 2 night train trip! Really enjoyable and informative - I'd no idea of these Regional tourist train trips, though I live in Melbourne. The train looks interesting and relaxing, we're booking a 2 night trip, but packing few packs of "Hot Hands" 8 hour heated body rectangles to keep us warm and cozy 🔥😊♨️ I highly commend you give them a try for any inland overnight Winter trips Thank you for sharing and all the time consuming work you've done creating a appealing video of the allure of a weekend get away on Victoria's lovely old trains 👍🚂❤
A unique trip and a detailed informative video. This is as much a testament to your style of filming and a promotion for the 707 operators, and this journey!
Those Southern Aurora and Overland carriages are beautiful and are probably the closest you can get to riding on the Indian Pacific like my mum did 40 years ago.
The Overland, in my opinion was the best riding interstate train of its day, much smoother than the Aurora. I worked on both of them and the Overland just had something that the Aurora didn't. Of course the old Overland being broad gauge may have played a part, but it was quieter. The Southern Aurora was still a great train though. The Aurora, like the Spirit of Progress, were way more comfortable than the over rated XPT's of today. If a locomotive broke down, which was extremely rare, a replacement could be sourced in a reasonable time. The XPT's have a terrible reliability history in reality, high break down rate and late running. On time performance is not great.
Hi Rory I really appreciated the effort and time it took to put this really great video together...you've inspired me to book for next year, as every other journey is sold out...the prices are very reasonable & affordable it looked well catered for and the off train journeys well organised..note to self pack my -12 sleeping bag I'm going the 5 day trip
Highly recommend Hot Hands 8 hour heated body rectangles. Pack of 5 around $8 I usually get around 10-11 hours of comfy cozy warmth from one patch. 🚂😊👍🔥♥️
I traveled in the sleeping carriage (single room) 44 years ago from Mildura to Spencer St. Waking up to the The Sun (paper) and a cup of tea. Great memories, cheers
For a fellow history buff that trip would have been a dream come true, to sleep in a wooden car! It was gorgeous. It's unfortunate that the window couldn't close for you. Too bad you didn't bring a winter sleeping bag. Well worth the money. Thank you for taking us with you.
Rory, thank you for another excellent VLOG and it is your best ever. You have introduced us to Slow Rail Journeys and opened up a new adventure that we want to pursue. 😎🤓
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Rory, being a train buff, loving history and growing up in Victoria. A great introduction to Slow Rail Journeys of which I was unaware so thank you.
Yeah I really enjoy your video it's good to see that you are back on the mend after the incident at Southern Cross Station yeah I really really like your video mate😊
i had no idea that Moama actually has something cool to go and visit :D thanks for taking us on a great journey, something to pencil in for next year :)
Great video Rory - your content is always interesting and has a hint of pining for the nostalgia of the old days of rail. Just one thing that I'll mention is that where the VLocity passes you on the west track (at Taradale by the looks of the old station building) you're actually in a passing or crossing loop on the east track, rather than in a siding 🙂 Keep up the good work mate!!
Hi Rory 👋 what a wonderful experience this was for you and what wonderful memories for me. I absolutely loved riding the Southern Aurora back in the 60s, 70s, and 80s when it was considered a very classy journey. Each sleeping carriage had a board on the platform at Central with the names of each passenger and their title, eg: Mr & Mrs John Smith: Master John Smith ( child) or John Smith esquire (for a single gentleman). The old wooden carriage you actually slept in was very similar to the overnight trains in NSW. I loved these sleeping carriages and always had the window open, rain, hail, or shine even in winter, and I never needed a hot water bottle 😅. Thanks for this amazing presentation, and I definitely think it was good value. Well done, Rory 👏 👍
Always love your train videos, especially show the population in different stations, I have a rough idea how the surroundings like, keep up the good work!
Great video Rory. I spent many trips on the Overland. My parents lived in Adelaide and l lived in Melbourne after l got married. We actually spent our 2nd night as a married couple going from Adelaide back to Melbourne with about 15 of our friends who had come by train. Economy Class sitting up was not do good back then either lol.
What a lovely train! I adore all that old school wooden panelling as well- thanks for this fantastic vlog, will put this on my list for 1 day in the future!
Another great video Rory! And yes, I'm in - I'll be canvassing some friends and heading to the booking site. Thanks for making us aware of this taste of Victoria/Australia's history that is still available.
Awesome episode, looks like a great tour. I remember using the old red trains they were passenger metro trains aswell. Looks like you need to take thermals to put under your pj's
Highly recommend Hot Hands 8 hour heated body rectangles. Pack of 5 around $8 I usually get around 10-11 hours of comfy cozy warmth from one patch. 🚂😊👍🔥♥️
Excellent presentation as always Rory. Always love your work. Call me pedantic, but as someone who worked regularly on the Southern Aurora and Overland from the early 1970's, may I respectfully correct something about one of stainless steel sleeping cars on this train. This is not your fault, however on the actual Aurora, the roomette, (single) sleepers, all had individual toilets like the twinette compartments had. There were no shared toilets at the end of any sleeping carriages. The single sleeper on this train with shared toilets, is an earlier build, for travel within NSW before the Southern Aurora came into service in 1962. The single sleeping car on the "Riverlander" here saw service on Sydney to Brisbane trains mainly. But who really cares anyway, you enjoyed your trip, and isn't it great being able to go on a quiet trip like this without "gunzels" ruining it for everyone.
In 1973 I travelled with school on a round victoria train trip in a cabin exactly like the old one at 9:10 We had 3 carriages for boys then a shower car & then 3 for girls then a dining car. We were all 12 years old in year 7 (then called form 1) and travelled Melbourne - Geelong - Warrnambool - Grampians - Echuca - Melbourne. With bus trips & packed lunch each day. It cost a massive A$50.00 each which I earned by doing odd jobs for neighbours and selling toys. Being boys we would fill the sink in our twin cabins with water and then tip them out on bridges or at crossings to try to wet people. The boys showered in the evenings and the girls in the mornings. So to get to breakfast the boys had to pass through the shower car & Girls carriages. Picture a dining car full of boys covered in talcum powder having breakfast and you get the idea. Great trip. Brings back many memories. Also we were told Queen Elizabeth II travelled on that train & in one of those cabins.
I worked on board that train as a steward back in the day. It was called the Train of Knowledge. The crew had a carriage to ourselves with toilet at one end and shower the other. The carriages were bloody freezing in winter and bloody sweltering in summer. It was a fantastic job though.
@aussiedonaldduck2854 You're welcome, During the school holidays, we would transfer across to the Southern Aurora and do the overnights to Albury. For an expat tasmanian, I got to see a lot of Victoria on the school train.
I think I worked on that train with other colleagues from Spencer street. You guys should have been kicked off and locked up! haha Seriously though you are right about the Queen travelling in one of the cars on the train. The Royal Train or VIP train as it became later, was made up of various carriages but one special one was always on the train to accomodate whoever the big wig was.
Rory a very entertaining and impressive video journey, well done! And a unique experience. Train looked awesome, but why no heating and thin bedding which they’ve overlooked for some reason. The food on board looked appealing but the meal at the Shamrock Hotel looked unappetising. Oh well the good experience made up for it. Was in Echuca a few months ago and did a river cruise which was enjoyable, you look like you had a great time, the Moama light show was very pretty. Not bad 2 nights for $1000 as everything is so expensive in Australia, a good find
I travelled on both the Southern Aurora and the Overland several times in the 80's in both the single and double cabins. Loved it then and so glad some of the carriages have been saved. Also travelled on the Adelaide-Perth sector of the Indian-Pacific in 89 in the double. I actually loved the rock and roll and clickety-clacks all night. That wooden carriage looks lovely too, you would think they would supply sufficient bedding though, or at least advise you to bring a winter sleeping bag! Nevertheless, looked like a great trip.
Highly recommend Hot Hands 8 hour heated body rectangles. Pack of 5 around $8 I usually get around 10-11 hours of comfy cozy warmth from one patch. 🚂😊👍🔥♥️
16:35 Old H type carriages still there! I heard they got vandalised though… And at 19:17, I don’t think the Vlocity is a great option for Deniliquin services. If they can purchase newer locomotives or rebuild the N classes similar to the A and P class locomotives, then they could run there, with N type carriages, as they have a buffet and way more comfortable seats for the 4 hour journey.
Grear report as usual Rory

What a lovely journey other than the freezing sleeper. A pity that it costs so much.
Great production. Thanks for your efforts. It looks like an excellent tour
A unique trip and a detailed informative video. This is as much a testament to your style of filming and a promotion for the 707 operators, and this journey!
Thank you Rory. Wonderful video. I’m now committing to a 707 Operations journey!
I am on the same train to Manangatang Races as I am watching this

Fantastic video Rory. Really well made 👍
Another great video, real step back in time when were an important way to link towns and cities. Before air and road.
Love the towns full of history.
I traveled in the sleeping carriage (single room) 44 years ago from Mildura to Spencer St. Waking up to the The Sun (paper) and a cup of tea. Great memories, cheers

Wow Rory, you are such a wonderful ambassador for Victoria. And your video was magnificent. ❤
I would love to go on this!! ❤
Rory, thank you for another excellent VLOG and it is your best ever. You have introduced us to Slow Rail Journeys and opened up a new adventure that we want to pursue. 😎🤓
Great work on the video! I'd like to do that trip.
R766 is in NSW and has been converted to standard guage. Great video!
Beautifully filmed and edited!
By the way Rory there are 3 r class R711 and R761 by Steamrail and R707 by slow rail journeys/R707 operations
Oh cool.
What a coincidence.
5 hours after you uploaded your video.
707 departed on another overnight train.
This time to Manangatang.
Great video. I appreciate the effort that went into the editing! I hope you enjoyed it even though you were working
Thanks for this review Rory! I didn't even know these guys existed, but will definitely be keeping an eye on them now!
without you I wouldn't know about this rail journey , cheers buddy.
The train is a good mix of eras like a patchwork quilt. Apart from the freezing cold I hope you had a good time 😊
What an adventure. And these trains were built before I was born!
Those old wash basins look so cool, glad they kept them.
Thoroughly enjoyed this video Rory, being a train buff, loving history and growing up in Victoria. A great introduction to Slow Rail Journeys of which I was unaware so thank you.
Fantastic Rory enjoyed every minute, top shelf
Thank you Rory! It was so cool seeing my town of Rochester in your video!
Yeah I really enjoy your video it's good to see that you are back on the mend after the incident at Southern Cross Station yeah I really really like your video mate😊
Fantastic video, Rory - very well done! I’m adding this trip to my Australia Bucket List!
Awesome video!! Thank you!
I always like your videos. This one was excellent. I think you showcased the journey beautifully. 😊
i had no idea that Moama actually has something cool to go and visit :D
thanks for taking us on a great journey, something to pencil in for next year :)
We loved this. Great memories from the past
Thanks Rory for a great video. Really informative. Looks like an awesome trip- sorry that overnight was so cold. Cheers
I do enjoy Rory's travel doco's.

Very beautiful clip
Thank you very much Rory, this video was fabulous.

What an amazing way to spend a weekend! Such history and so much to see!
Just lucky they don't have the hard NSW-VIC border anymore😉
They sleeping cabins look really shabby on the inside. I still would love to try it.

Great video. I would consider doing this over summer or take a heater onboard 😂😂😂😂given their is 240 volts and a swag
Highly recommend Hot Hands 8 hour heated body rectangles.
Pack of 5 around $8
I usually get around 10-11 hours of comfy cozy warmth from one patch. 🚂😊👍🔥♥️
Rory, R761 and R707 arn't the only R Class's that operate in victoria you forgot to mention R711. and R766 which is on Standard Gauge in NSW
Did they catch the arsole that hurt you mate?
I wish SA had stuff like this 😭
Is this a regular train? Or is this a special one-off journey?
And NSW R 766 is running too
R711 is another R Class in Victoria
16:35 Old H type carriages still there! I heard they got vandalised though…
And at 19:17, I don’t think the Vlocity is a great option for Deniliquin services. If they can purchase newer locomotives or rebuild the N classes similar to the A and P class locomotives, then they could run there, with N type carriages, as they have a buffet and way more comfortable seats for the 4 hour journey.
Wait, the crew are volunteers?
This was a great video. The background music was much too loud and intrusive.
