Thanks for playing content on these for comparison. I fully realize that recording, transmission, and end user speakers are going to affect the sounds we here on our end, but it's really nice to be able to at least get a side by side of the tonal qualities. EVOs to me sound much more to my liking and I can already tell I'd get fatigued with the B&W. Just my preference.
The EVO'S are impressive especially when you consider the cost savings.. excellent value.
I would not say that one should buy speakers as an investment because they are not. But I am sure these will be able to hold up a certain market value. Especially the oak model

Damn, the B&Ws are bright! The EVOs are bass heavy for sure, but balanced in the mids and highs. I'd still need to listen both in person, but, from these recordings, this is my take. Great job, Sir.

Thank you for the comparison. I definitely like the sound from Evo 4.2 much better than 707S2. I hear the clear female voice and confortable tite bass and drums. 706S2 sounds rich in low frequency range but unfocused, and the female voice goes backward. I decided to buy Evo 4.2, while I had not paied attention to Whafedale before.
The ride hat in the first sound-demo section was very much irritating me with 707S2s. Not so at all with Evos. And snare/toms later sounded like snares and toms.
Thank you for your great comparison video-I feel the wharfedales sound more coloured -the B&Ws sound better to my ears -yes they can sound bright which is question of synergy adding a decent sub can not just add bass but help to rebalance the sound adding tubes into the system can also help with this.
Indeed, tubes pairs well with the 706 S2. I was about to upgrade my 706 S2, but instead swapped by Lyngdorf TDAI-1120, which I was super happy with, for a Primaluna EVO 100 tube integrated. End result, feels like new speakers.

Excellent review. I was hoping and waiting for this review..it's as though you have read my mind.
The evo looks so gorgeous when put against the 706.. However, listening through the youtube and headphone, the 706 sounds better..there are lots of information been lost on the high frequency side by the evo. Having heard that you were saying the evo became so dynamic when you toed it in..to my surprise it isn't as dynamic as the 706..perhaps if listen in person it could be otherwise. The most striking difference I heard is when making a comparison at 13:35 to 14:10 (evo) and 16:25 to 16:50 (706). The drums are position so far behind in the evo thus somehow lost compared to the emotional feelings the drums gave through the 706. By the way, I love drum beats. Smiley face here. I did not give much attention to the rest of the comparison but just listened casually.
Overall it's a great review and I enjoyed it. Wish you can make a review like this with Evo 4.4, Jamo C97 ii and SVS ultra tower. These 3 speakers have gotten great reviews from others but no one has put them against each other.

Interesting I can hear differences through my phone speaker :) I’ll have to use headphones later, but the B&W likely clearer/clean with hot treble, Wharfedales more relaxed for long listening sessions. I have found some previous old Wharfedales could also sound a bit thin/lacking at the same time, so hopefully the EVO sorts this out somewhat.
I agree, I have the EVOs and they are warm and you can listen to them for hours. The recording and music type makes a big difference.

Evie Sands' vocals are more pure and natural with the EVO. The EVO seem to have a more transparent presentation of the sound, as well.

Evo 4.2 beats 10x priced speakers for refinement and details. It's like 2x more detailed but 2x more refined at the same time. Listen wit headphones.

I have listened to 706S2, subwoofer is a must. But maybe the room was too dampen, maybe in a small room with less furniture 706S2 is the best choice. Anyway, so many videos with the same warning - pair 706 with a warm amp otherwise it will be either love or hate, no other option :)

Congratulations. I enjoyed listening to the wharfedale in the vocal range. It seemed to have a more airy and open tone. As far as b & w is concerned, in the middle range it is further back, but at the bottom it manages to have more depth than the Wharfedale evo 4.2. The sound capture equipment is very good and neutral, which allows us to identify some differences here.
You're correct, I have the Evo 4.2 and the vocals are very good.
I bought a pair of these for my garage and can verify most of what you're saying in your review. A couple of things I def. don't like: the listening angle is very narrow; and the midrange lacks some 'crack' for snare drums. The Evo 4.2 is indeed a good speaker for the price, but they're maybe 40% as good as my 15 y/o B&W Nautilus 804 speakers with the same amplification (Bryston 3B SST) and in the same room.
Thanks for the review, I too enjoy 80s and hard rock, but hard to find speakers that do justice to the music, so your review has put them on my list.
I have made up my mind on EVo 4.2
In order to do a fair comparison you must have each speaker placed in the exact same spot and also away from the wall having them set up like that will definitely cause acoustic issues especially on the right side where the Bowers is right next to the wall that will definitely impact sound at least on my experience maybe yours varies but if you want a fair test you cannot have them like that same space same conditions that’s how you test.
Wharfedale is way better looking I’ll say that

Pair the b&w with a arcam or rotel amp and don't worry they will aound amazing, if you can't get one of those amps thrn look for a warm amp, ie denon.

@@tess6499 arcam is abit warmer, I don't rate the new b&w speakers, the 90s and early 2000 models were much better, dali speakers have very smooth high end .

i learnt the importance when i got my wharfdale evo 4.2 speakers it sounded terrible on my desk which is big and made of plywood i kinda knew this would happen so i put them ontop of my old speakers since i blew the woofers when family annoyed me but anyways tannoy Mercury m20 speakers are a great height for the wharfdales still sounded muddy close to the wall moved it bit by bit till it was about a 1 m away the midbass evened out and lower tones really came to life for anyone who uses wharfdale evo 4.2 speakers i would remove the black foot piece of wood so ur left with the speaker box the plinth at the bottom doesn't sound good with the down firing port i assume this is because the plinth allows for bass to come from the sides and not the fromt or back it brings the speakers into an audiophile happiness for me

I have the Evo's 4.2 and the 707 S2.. now I understand why there is such vast difference in sound with respect to positioning and cables.... I love both speakers but I find myself listening to the S2's more I enjoy the high frequency range.. I recently purchased Mogami 3104 cables for the 707 S2 the sound is extremely close to the actual recording, crispness, clean, total separation tight bass and superb highs.. I'm very pleased with both speakers.. I recently saw the 707 S3, I am intrigue with speaker terminals just the look of the terminals will push me to buy them
I loved the Whafedale Evo4.2 but the bass on the B&W706 is better.
You should compare these two speakers against the Ascend Sierra 2 EX. There is not a proper review of the Sierra 2EX out there I thought to be helpful.
One big Takeaway is that the right speaker for the Bowers And Wilkins is much closer to the wall than the other one That also would affect the acoustics
B&w on this video sound more brightnes, more opened sound. I like b&w
Love get pair of 4.2 at $1500. Canadian the center almost $1100. Then you got buy high quality stands $300+. Are 4.2 made in England or fabricated in China. And hearing it's great speaker for classic rock, pair with my dual SVS-SB2000 subs perfect combo.
My thumbs up for Wharfedale Evo.
Wharfedale is big, but delicate, balanced, sweet, and it has headroom. Voice is fabulous, incredible.
B&W packs a wallop both in bass and high end. It is a commanding presence. It calls attention to itself. It is very, very good... except for the occasional shrillness. Voice not as good as the Wharfie: it lacks its velvety smoothness and starts getting scratchy. Does listener fatigue ever set in? Really, now: It is an honest question.

The B&W sound better to me ....richer and more bass extension than the Wharfedale evo, but not twice the price diferences !Overall i think B&W are the better speakers in sound, and i say this

B&w more enjoyable here. Much better weight in volcals and also the sweet tonality is present. One cannot sacrifice tonality for transparency.

Do you think the Wahrfedales work good with a big Marantz AVR? The Wharfedale are very interesting for home cinema, because they have three way dipole rear speakers with two ribbon tweeters each and a big three way center speaker.
Interesting that most people prefer the more audiophile 706, I have to say I agree.
B&W easy wins on sound here. More clarity and enjoyable full sound, not lacking in high end detal. Whaferdale looks the part.. Large cabinet, phase plug mid/bass driver, large dome mid and a ribbon tweeter. But the whaferdale lacks in sound delivery, slightly rolled off and boring sound. Both decent speakers tho.

If I could, match the mid to low response of the 706S2 with the mid to high response of the evo 4.2.
The B&W has punchy, decisive and well defined bass, surprising for a comparatively small speaker.
The vocals on the final track that you tested by Evie Sands sound a lot better on the 706. She sound more authentic and natural flowing the vocals

Evo over the WRX! That would have been my choice. Still is. The Evo's sound more refined. The B&W's sound great though and are such a beautiful speaker. It's nice you have some reference points and to be able to swap them out. Great review like always. I bought a set of speakers a few months ago and saw your review of them (I will not mention what). It made me rethink how I liked them. I ended up selling them because I didn't use them as much as I thought I would. I did buy a pair of Evo 4.1's a couple days ago and I can't stop listening to them. Sound is all to the beholder. Happy listening 🎧
maybe not the best comparison (size/volume) 3-way v 2-way; the 705 would be more appropriate comparison but of course the price/value gap widens. Evo's sound like a great value speaker - makes me wonder how good the Elysian must be...

Even the 50 quid Wharfedale 9.1 Diamond 74 watt speakers sound good.basswise they certainly compete with my 100 watt B&W 607 s2 anniversary speakers,probably because how i position the Wharfedale but the B&W has a overall enhanced sound and should do for another 450 quid.But Wharfedales are very good speakers for less money.

Actually i just find out, wharfedale is much cheaper here at the philippines. In US it's retail for about $1k so equals to 50k pesos here at the philippines, but if i'll buy it here at the philippines i can get it for price of 44k pesos so it's mean 100 USD cheaper than US retail price are.
I really wish these sort of reviews will include a sample of operatic music, like voices of Jackie Evancho because voices like her will test speakers much more than these mellow "jazz" type of vocals.
Second demo track there is much better bass on the Wharfedale.

Only heard the evo and the 606, I would go for 606 in a heart beat... but if your treble sensitive, the 606 might not be for you. I find the evo thin sounding and prefer the sound of the elac dbr62.

EVOs would make lot of sense at 900usd per pair .
B&Ws are more cohesive and bass has better grip.
Tweeters in B&W would benefit greatly from 0.01uf bypass that would clean out the harmonics and airness and made these tweeters sound more lush .
Parts Connexion keeps nice copper dehlunds 0.01uf for 40usd each , after few weeks of breakin it would be as lush and more spacious than EVOs
These Evo 4.2 sound like old b&w . And to me , this is a good thing . Still have 801s1

Now I know what Audiofool meant when he said he doesnt like how the evos reproduces the female vocals...Its very obvious in your last song demo " while I look at you"... but Im very impressed with the evos base...its wow!
What exactly do you mean by that? It sounds different for sure, but I don't see (hear) what is wrong with the evos. The evos sound more coherent while on the 706 the vocals are more separated from the rest of the music. Kinda feels like the vocals are at the front, relatively close to me, while the instruments extend sideways and goes behind the vocals. On the Evos the vocals sound as if they were just another instrument. Not as pronounced, blends in more with the instruments.
Just my 2 cents. I used a Beyer T1 for listening.
Andor Menczer what he means is the female vocals are very recessed and thin sounding. Its like the instruments are the focus and not the vocalist. Its like shes at the back of the stage and the band is in front.
I doubt the stand makes all that much difference. What's wow about it?

B&W 706 S2 is the clear winner. Even Klipsch 600M sounds better than Wharfedale Evo 4.2
How do the Klipsch RP 600M compare to the Wharfedale Evo Speakers? Is there someone how heard them both?
Kopfnuss Kalle i have. 2 totally opposite speakers, 600m very forward and detail oriented. 4.2 big sound bass is loud but dont go deep. I will say the 4.2 holographic stage is unbeatable but at the cost of detail.

I don't put much stock in sound demos and this comments section shows the danger of them. People making judgements based on a recording and basically ignoring the review. Clearly stated in the review was the Evo needs toe-in to to sound their best but that's overlooked. But I guess based on the number of ads that's where the money is.

Most speakers need toe in to sound their best, point speakers towards your ears at ear height
Coming back to this video *after* purchasing Evos and living with them for 2 weeks... The second sound demo actually highlights my problem with them (which I didn't notice when I watched before buying).... There are 3 main drum tones throughout the "Calvary" piece, the *kick* drum low bass hit, the snare type 1/2 note hits, and the two 1/8s one 1/4 hit of a high tom or timpany sort of drum hit at the end of the phrase (hard to describe drum sounds when they're actually electronic)... That third type (the highest in tone) has *FAR* more impact with the B&W than the Wharfedales. It's that range that lacks for me. On tracks with a lot of bass, the tones are all there are very nicely detailed but the as the notes climb they become thin and lack power and depth. The Evo perform low bass fantastically for its size (surprisingly well, really), but as soon as it climbs it loses any sense of slam.
As good as the Evos image and separate instruments, I think I have to return mine for the reason above unfortunately. It's driving me crazy too often.
Evo might benefit from work on crossovers and/or woofer?
I think the equipment connected to them has a strong bearing. I have an old amp and they sound pretty good but have heard much, much better systems played through them and they sound far better. I plan to upgrade the rest of the system over time.

I came from floor standers, my first ever speaker was brand new Infinity Kappa 9.2i in the late 90s. All my speaker choice is base on the room size but all these speakers are samples for review.

I think B&W have more mids tones ... but Wharfedale have more selective tones ... especially bass tones are beautiful
From 18:30 I think/hear that Evo 4.2 has some "hole" in frequency arround 300Hz. And from 18:10 Evo 4.2 has some boost on frequency arround 100Hz. Other frequencies are very nice on Evo 4.2, beter than on B&W.
B&W seems to play better 300Hz but is little bit boosted on high frequencies on cca 12kHz.
I think that weakest point on Evo 4.2 for me is bass loudspeaker, I would exchange it from bass from B&W 706 S2 to make perfect Wharfedale loudspeaker.
B&W may need to be further away from the wall for better depth
