      Hi great informative video, the 606 in the oak I think looked a lot better , I do like the evo 4.2, but when I see 606s2 anniversary at £349 you can’t really beat that considering was £699. Regards mark

    Great review on the B&Ws Terry and they sounded very impressive for the money, but I think I'd go for the Evo 4.2s for both sound and looks. It seems that the more affordable speakers are getting better and better with the latest technologies and are snapping at the heals of more prestigious models and that's a very good thing for us who can't afford the high end stuff.

    Hey Terry, how do these compare to the new 606s3's??

  • @drichcymru
    @drichcymru 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hi Terry, you must have a direct connection to my brain as these are right at the top of my demo list of potential successors to my 18 year old B&W DM601S3's. Don't get me wrong, I've thoroughly enjoyed them and they are still very capable but my visit to the Bristol show earlier this year (I was sat behind you when you were filming the Evo4.4's) has whetted my appetite and left me wondering if I am missing out on 18 years worth of development by holding on to them. The main unanswered question so far is how to these speakers (both the 606 & Evo 4.2) deal with more guitar based music, bands like Metallica, Foo Fighters, Dream Theater, Meshuggah? While I listen to a lot of 80's pop and retro inspired synthwave music, rock and metal forms a big part of my musical diet. Would be great if you could include this in your testing. Thanks and I can't wait to hear your thoughts on the other speakers in the test, especially the Focal and Fyne Audio models.

      I recently swapped my 601S3's for Klipsch RP600. I listened to the 606's but they're a little shrieky for me. The Klipsch are just way more fun, and it was time for something different:) The 601S3's really show their age compared to almost any new speaker in the 500-600 Euro/Pound range. I'm saving up for Sonus-Fabers...

  • @al2813

    Hi, great test and video. I wanted to mention again the LS50s because they are now sold for less then 700 euros in German stores. I got mine for 660. In fact almost no one is selling them for their original price tag of 1100+ euros. I adore my LS50s but the question that nags me now is where do I need to go to improve on them. If I need to spend over 1500 that makes them automatically the current market killer in their existing price point.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LS50 is above the cut off for this test its not what I was looking to include for purposes of what I am trying to focus on affordable speakers

    You have an amazing in-room bass response! is there a secret we don't know about?

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No Secret far from it, the opposite in fact my room is an awful room that I have working with for years to make it sound better, I mean acoustically - corner loading the speakers right next to the big subs has added more boundary gain to the speakers so they hit crazy numbers at low freq - however I know that is room gain not the speakers - so I manage the bass from them down at where they run out of bass extension - that way I hear more of the speaker and less of the room if that makes sense.
      The last time I measured RT60 in my room it was crazy low 0.2-0.3ms low which is crazy low - no added room reverb in this room :) I have lifted the room a little since with some diffusion but I see what I think is audiophiles making the mistake of adding diffusion to an already overly reverberant room - I think some bad advice has been shared about this - imo of course and all that does it diffuse what should be a tight and focused sound image, making the sound worse not better. Music is not supposed to be diffused sounding otherwise it would sound like that through headphones as well - listen through headphones and everything is tightly tightly focused because there is no room being added to it :)

    • @net_news
      @net_news 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      mmm... I think exactly the opposite. Remove the B&W badge from the 606s and they look like $150-200 speakers. The EVOs look like $2k speakers, they punch way over their price range.

    • @thomasfitzhugh7936
      @thomasfitzhugh7936 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@net_news I must agree that badging makes a difference, & thought the 606s are kinda plain looking I think the finish of the tweeter with the silver continuum driver gives off an industrial flair with a splash of elegance. The EVOs have alot going on so to me it looks like they're trying too hard, I hate the look of the tweeter. We all have different tastes apparently. Lol

    • @stonefree1911

      I'm the polar opposite on that, the Evo's look much more high end to me. Large AMT tweeter, a well designed soft-dome mid (criminally under used these days...), and an exotic, curved and acoustically designed cabinet. They are playing in the field of double their price range. At least.

  • @net_news
    @net_news 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This video is kinda deja vu to me. I really don't get what's so great about B&W speakers... I didn't try B&W uber high-end stuff because I'm too poor to afford them but I had many of their more "mundane" high-end offerings. And I had exactly the same feeling with them as watching this video: oh, they are very good... but the EVO trounces them!
    Take the 805 D3 for example, a supposedly amazing end of the game bookshelf 5 stars, class A champion... well, they are really good but they are not amazing at all if you compare them to almost any other $6k speaker! Nonetheless every person that listened to my 805s loved them... In fact, I sold them in heartbeat at almost the same price I bought them. Don't ask me why. I just don't get it. Kudos to B&W though.

    • @bigjay1970
      @bigjay1970 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just auditioned the 803 with Macintosh trimmings worth $70,000 total and much, much preferred my JBL's at a price that were probably less than the speaker cables used in that system. I know its all subjective but having a system looking expensive wasn't my top priority. And the demo room was treated. I sat there in disbelief demoing music I had listened to in my system an hour prior.🤯🤯🙄🤔🤪 I suppose I'm a compression driver/Horn kind of guy!😝😬

    I've had my B&W 606s for about five weeks now affixed to appropriate B&W dual stanchion stands filled with lead/zinc pellets to prevent any spurious ringing. Coupled with a REL T-5 sub, the system sounds quite amazing, far better than numerous good quality floor-standing types I've previously owned. I find that it really is crucial to adjust the tone controls somewhat and have done during the weeks I've owned them, but now l feel that I've found a good average that satisfies my listening needs. I'm a musician, playing both bass guitar and bass trombone, so my addition of the REL could be expected but I've adjusted all the levels so that it produces subtle warmth and depth in the low mid and bass frequencies, but in no way over the top flappy bass. Across a wide range of musical genres, the B&Ws and sub produce distinctive across frequency separation with all instruments and vocals easily pronounced. Collectively, my speakers were £1100 and l consider that to be money well spent.....

    I’m not surprised you needed Dirac to control that top end! I listened to a couple of the higher range 700 series including the top 702 S2; edgy bordering on harsh with their treble response.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used it more to balance the bass than take off the top end, I like the top end, but you need a good amount of bass with it to balance and nice acoustics helps and the right kit

    • @Mingchops
      @Mingchops 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pursuit Perfect System I see, so the added bass makes for a relative flattening to the overall sound. I know I found the 700 series too much, but not heard the 600’s. Also, I know the LS50 are over budget for the test, but would interesting to see you do them as a bonus at the end (yeah I know you’re already doing a huge amount of work for the series as it is!! :) ). I’ve not heard LS50’s - but I am a fan in general of KEF.

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mingchops I did think about adding my ls50 in but that wouldn't then be fair to the other manufacturers whom I put the 650 limit on. Adding more bass softens a harder treble due to the perception of the ovrtall sound hence why adding subs can help mid range and treble :)

    Are these the original 606 or the Anniversary Edition 606 S2?

      @@cw1967 It's my first proper speakers and I only have my friends systems as a reference, but have no regrets - everyone that comes over also likes their sound. I paired them up with Cambridge audio AXR85 and have had no issues at all. Going down the rabbit hole of getting an external DAC to see whether there will be a noticable improvement in sound.

    I've watch many of sound test videos and researched speakers over the years. This guy, (Terry Ellis) is one of the best with his presentation and information provided. Excellent job. Got allot of good out of this. Thanks.
