Thanks for your long term review of these speakers. As an older and wiser audiophile, I generally don't waste my time with reviews of recent purchases or additions of audio gear, and making judgements in that short period of time is generally premature. It normally takes me a year or two to fully understand and appreciate a good audio product, and many thanks for reviewing a product in the correct manner.
Thanks for this update video on Evo 4.2. As I read from the comments, I’m the happy member of the “Evo 4.2 owners who bought it based on your review” club! And thank you for investigating and answering on the phase plug issue! Not a big deal for me regarding the sound quality, but I’m impressed how seriuosly you took our questions! And about Evo 4.2 I can say everything you say is true. It’s impresive how forgiving they are regarding the placement!
Excellent speakers. Ive been using my Evo 4.2s everyday for about 6 months now in our living room. These speakers are very heavily used. I would oftentimes leave them playing for 12 hours straight. Happy to say I've never encountered any issues yet. Soundstage is large. Sound signature is very smooth, easy going, balanced and on the warm side. Amazing bass for bookshelf speakers. Mids can, at times, be too forward with certain songs. Imaging is just ok (could be due to its large and deep soundstage). If you want 3D imaging, I would suggest to try out the KEFs.
@@chrisr1897 just a nice and honnest man. Hope he will never gets poluted by the commerce. And he reviews gear everybody can afford so he should be able to reach a wide public. Again, sorry for the english.
I purchased the Evo 4.2 in Walnut recently, and they're honestly breathtaking. Clean, warm, incredible resolution, and simply stunning to look at. They definitely need a small sub though to realise the full sound stage. That aside, amazingly even running them with a Marantz sr5013 receiver in bi amp, they are just that good. Can't wait to introduce a dedicated stereo amp to take them to the next level.
I've been through a couple of Amps with mine, if it helps you at all I've settled on an Arcam SA20, the pure class A up to 20w really compensates for the slight low volume lack of detail, and the 90w/Ch at 8 ohm and 180w/Ch at 4ohms (both channels driven....unlike the way AV amps describe their output) really get a good grip. Might save you some time, Marantz PM7000 and Audiolab 6000 both got discarded
Thanks for this update! Good to hear you still enjoy these speakers. I have a recently purchased pair teamed with a Cambridge CXA60 and find them very good, especially for longer listening sessions. No sensory overload from overly tight bass or overly bright tops. Just sweet and refined. I use a Wharfedale SW150 sub along with them to give a bit of lower down grunt. I'm finding this system very pleasant. Perhaps my only negative is that these Evo 4.2s aren't very forgiving of poor recordings. Some reviews suggest 4.1s might win out by being more "forgiving" of poorer recordings. But then they might miss the lovely mids the 4.2s offer. Thanks again for the many reviews!
Regarding poor recordings its always a trade off, if poor recording sound good or normal, then speaker will not sound natural or you will miss details in top quality records.
I bought these about 8 months ago on his recommendation, with the Sanus 22 inch stands and couldn’t be happier. Using Yamaha 801 integrated, great combination. Ive heard other reviewers say they are vinyl wrapped, but no, beautiful real veneers. An amazing buy at $995! Love em.
Great review as always @tharbamar... I have been using these for around 8 months and have paired them with Leak Audio Stereo 130 amp... couldn't be happier.. just love the combination... fatigue free listening experience!
I had a very good time with these speakers for several months but eventually let them go - they excelled at jazz and classical, as well as acoustic piece, but they really were lacking for many rock and electronic oriented track and didn't have much "hit" for those sorts of styles. I replaced them with (folks seem to be very hot or cold with these) new Zu Omen DWs and couldn't be happier overal. The EVOs were more detailed and had better placement/imaging in many applications, but the Zus come close (except for the detailed highs) have a much deeper soundstage and overall just make me smile no matter what. All that to say, the EVOs are fantastic and I do sometimes miss them.
Hi there! This is a bit disappointing to hear! I was going to use the 4.1 version in a mixed HiFi / DJ setup. My primary music is House and I was going to supplement the low end with a REL Sub. Is it the speed and dynamics that were lacking for you? I am struggling to find a decent bookshelf speaker which meets my needs... and I don't really want to be overwhelmed with a forward Klipsch sound. I don't have the room for a floor standing. Any suggestions?
@@alanmodimages The 4.1 will be different. I can (and many always will) make suggestions but the truth is only your own ear will tell you if you're happy or not. I could have lived with the 4.2 quite honestly, but I was making a big swap and they didn't offer enough of an upgrade from the Wharedale Diamonds 10.2 I was replacing. To that end, those Diamonds had more mid-bass shove than the Evos, but lacked bass depth and upper detail... but that's comparative. They are fantastic for the price. I know @Tharbamar lived with and loved a pair of modified Diamond 240s for quite a long while. Those are quite similar to the Diamond 10.2 and worth a look as well. IMO both of those have more boom, but that's not always a bad thing in a bookshelf; under the right placement you can really dial in a meaty sound in some cases by utilizing that (ported) boom to your advantage. Yammer yammer yammer. :) Bookshelf/standmounts can be tricky.
@@therealchickentender Thanks so much for your feedback! One of my core challenges is that the speakers need to be literally inches from the wall with my setup, so I have been avoiding rear ported designs. The KEF Q series actually come with port plugs for that application, but they seem like a compromise. My only other alternative s to look for flat panel wall mounted Home Theater speakers. I just have my doubts that they can compare to the heft a true bookshelf can offer.
@@alanmodimages Fully. NP. It's always the room itself that plays the biggest challenge and effect *every* speaker more than we realize a lot of the time. The 4.3 might work for you as well with the same bottom port design and when you factor in the stand, they're probably smaller than the total footprint than the 4.2 or many standmount speakers. They were my "next stop" if my Zus didnt' work out for me, but those did work out so can't really speak to them more than just theory. Anyhow, yeah you gotta just try them or any speaker out in your space. Wherever you buy from, have a good return policy. :) Hearing them in your space and having time to adjust can't be more important. :)
Bought a pair of Evo 4.2 because of your earlier review and have not regretted the decision. You are right, when I change their placement, the clarity and imaging improves. So I am sure I have not yet found their best positioning. Oh btw, like your new hair style...
I am running these with a Marantz AV7005 pre, Denon POA 2200 amp, through my very high end PC and I have trouble putting into words what I am hearing, the AMT and the mid range driver in some music can be so fluid together that it is liquid caramel in my ears!
I own the 4.4s and its the only speaker I have ever been satisfied with. I have owned lots of speakers upto £5k and to me these are the best all rounders. They are honest, uncoloured and natural sounding. I just enjoy the music with these and Don’t have the urge to change anything. They are intimate and make you feel part of the music. Very realistic sounding.
Hi there I finally got me the Wharfedale 4.2 in walnut with stands & speaker cable I made a offer of £400 on ebay he Accepted my offer they come this Friday I'm excited U have Helped me become of ur enthusiasm and ur love for them plus other I watched Hallelujah God is so very good to me
I also have these Evo 4.2 loudspeakers and I read that the cabinets are damped with sponges as in no other loudspeakers. Indeed, each of these columns is crammed with 3 sponges. First, I took all of them out of one and I was happy with the quality of the treble. But after a while I put one smallest sponge back on. The same in the second column and it stays like that for me. The head no longer hurts from this terrible suppression.
Thanks for this update! I was just about to order a pair, but with this new phase plug, I'll pass and wait for the next model from wharfedale... I hope they have something good cooking.

Well, Grace sure sounds great in this demo through the 4.2s :) Pity I have a small listening room (4 x 3.5 x 3 metres) - I think the Evos would be an overkill in such a small space
I had almost the same room, maybe a bit smaller (13m2) and they were quite bass heavy and I couldn't really place them on other places since the room was so small, so I ended up returning them. Maybe the 4.1 would be best? Haven't tried those yet.
@@Phoenix_1991 I am currently using Canton 502.2's and a Yamaha WXA50. I think my Yamaha needs a bit more sensitive speakers, so maybe I will try the Klipsch RP-M600

Thank you for the followup review. After much research I recently went with a Cambridge Audio CXA81 and these EVO 4.2s.....WOW! I can't stop listening. Some songs have revealed details I've not heard until now. JUST INCREDIBLE for my space and my ears. I'm also using, (whenever feeling like it or "needed"), a Martin Logan subwoofer to add a little juice to some selections...otherwise they do just fine on their own.
I want to get Marantz PM7000N (based on my budget), and I want to pair it with Wharfedale Diamond 12.4 or this Evo 4.2 My fitness studio is 5 m x 15 m. Any suggestion which one is better?
@@Tharbamar Thank you! I have just purchased the S2s based largely on your reviews and comparisons..early days for me but I hope to enjoy them as much as you have.. Keep up the excellent content...it is a joy to watch.
I agree with you: these speakers are incredibly forgiving regarding the placement! In comparison with other speakers I've had, from difficult to easiest to place: Wharfedale Linton - B&W 706 S2 - ATC SCM7 - Wharfedale Denton 80TH - Wharfedale Evo 4.2 almost at the same level of my LS 50 Meta. The EVO 4.2 is a speaker that while keeping a lush warm sound manages to also be detailed where it needs to be.
I have set it up with Denon DRA 800h AV receiver. Any additional component setup suggestion u have? Also..the stands are EVO 4 stands only. Initially before break in the sound was bit harsh but as it played over 50 hours the bass and loudness of the speaker improved. I am not sure about the break in of tweeter though but it sounds bit more representative..so I am confused whether its in the process of break in or it has breaked in. Thanks for the suggestions, I went for this speakers after listening to you. This is a great addition in my life. Thank you very much again..
I have an interesting situation/ problem here. And, I need your advice. I was going between this speaker, and the NEW Martin Logan F1's The problem was the F1's were available at Best Buy, to Demo directly. And they were on sale, so I opted to "Take my chances, and trust them(" BEST BUY. (That doesn't sound good, and doesn't bode well), for their quality and service, which has gone from bad to worse over the years. So, right off the bat, the order got screwed up. It went downhill from there. Have you personally heard the Martin Logans? And if so, how would they compare to EVO 4.2 or even 4.4's? I need your honest opinion . I will still have to deal BEST BUY, and undo all the crap they caused. But in, would you go with the 4.2 or 4.4's? Thank you for advice in advance. -Mark-
Great review as usual. Short question. These Evo 4.2 or the Polk R200?? Could an old Diamond 225+aperion super tweeter fight in this 2 other's league??

Hey, i am looking to buy new speakers for my living room. I my region i have very limited options. So please recommend me a speaker between evo 4.2 and q acoustics concept 40.
I am hoping you can help me out with something - I have a pair of EVO 4.2s, and was wondering: have you taken any measurements of your EVO 4.2s? And if so, would you be willing to show me the Impulse graph that you might have gotten from that speaker? Thank you in advance!
@@Tharbamar Hmm... I guess it depends on what software you used to take those measurements. REW automatically produces an Impulse graph, so if you happened to use that software, you probably have one available. Stereo mode wouldn't matter for an Impulse graph (I have measurements of both my EVOs together and separately - the Impulse graph is identical for each measurement). I'm asking because it has come to my attention that the tweeters are not in phase with the woofers, so I would like to see if someone else with the same speaker has the same result - that would tell me if it's by design due to the crossover architecture they used or if it's an internal wiring error. Thanks!
I agree, bass is strong with the 4.2 but losses bass around 50hz. A subwoofer or 2 will greatly benefit these speakers. I got mine almost a year ago but got the fake phase plugs. Now kinda disappointed but still a great sounding speaker. Great review as always!

Excuse me and what do you think of willsenton with the elac debut reference? Can you suggest anything else for the same price ratio? Excuse my stupid question but I'm a newbie and I really respect your opinion. Thanks

Might save you some time, Marantz PM7000 and Audiolab 6000 both got discarded
you already bought a stereo amp?
I’m glad you’re enjoying them, thanks for the comment.
Regarding poor recordings its always a trade off, if poor recording sound good or normal, then speaker will not sound natural or you will miss details in top quality records.
You give honest reviews, I like that. Clear explanation.
Thanks
I bought these about 8 months ago on his recommendation, with the Sanus 22 inch stands and couldn’t be happier. Using Yamaha 801 integrated, great combination. Ive heard other reviewers say they are vinyl wrapped, but no, beautiful real veneers. An amazing buy at $995! Love em.
Yes, they sound very nice with Yamaha 801, thanks
How well do you think this will pair with the as-501?
Great review as always @tharbamar... I have been using these for around 8 months and have paired them with Leak Audio Stereo 130 amp... couldn't be happier.. just love the combination... fatigue free listening experience!

Now I see your points about the bass driver's phase plug! :)
I agreed but I have something really great coming up in next review, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing.
I am running these with a Marantz AV7005 pre, Denon POA 2200 amp, through my very high end PC and I have trouble putting into words what I am hearing, the AMT and the mid range driver in some music can be so fluid together that it is liquid caramel in my ears!
Sounds Awesome/! Keep on doing these reviews! Thank You.
Wharfedale did great job on voicing of Evo and Elysian series for sure, thanks
What the square of room?
4.2 or 4.4s two different speakers 4.4 are floor standing if I'm correct Iwas also looking at these your thoughts? Thank you.

Wharfedale 4.2 in walnut with stands & speaker cable I made a offer of £400 on ebay he Accepted my offer they come this Friday I'm excited U have Helped me become of ur enthusiasm and ur love for them plus other I watched Hallelujah God is so very good to me
I also have these Evo 4.2 loudspeakers and I read that the cabinets are damped with sponges as in no other loudspeakers. Indeed, each of these columns is crammed with 3 sponges. First, I took all of them out of one and I was happy with the quality of the treble. But after a while I put one smallest sponge back on. The same in the second column and it stays like that for me. The head no longer hurts from this terrible suppression.
what do you mean with the suppression? interested to hear what improved with sponges out
Thanks for this update! I was just about to order a pair, but with this new phase plug, I'll pass and wait for the next model from wharfedale... I hope they have something good cooking.

Pity I have a small listening room (4 x 3.5 x 3 metres) - I think the Evos would be an overkill in such a small space
I had almost the same room, maybe a bit smaller (13m2) and they were quite bass heavy and I couldn't really place them on other places since the room was so small, so I ended up returning them. Maybe the 4.1 would be best? Haven't tried those yet.

Im planning to do your exact set up. Do they sound good on any kind of music like electronic or rock. ? Do you use a separate streamer.? Any updates?

But in the end now what do you prefer: Quad S2 or Evo 4.2? Hello and thank you, Luca
Yes. It would be nice to know which you prefer in the long run.
I like to switch them around, Quad S2 vocals and strings are hard to beat, thanks

Good sound. Good speakers.
nice review, will they go well with Arcam Solo music?
Nice take man. Side note those speakers look to close for my taste to listen from 14ft distance.
Hey man…awesome reviews. How about pairing the 4.2 with the New NAD C700. Just picked it up!!
It should be fine paring them together.

@@Tharbamar Power handling? Ok..I guess. I run my 4.2's with a PS Audio BHK 250 that puts out a lot of power. I also ran it with my Sprout100 and it was great. No issues. I was speaking more in terms of sound quality, transparency, and soundstage, which I think is a more prevalent issue for most.

Hi. Im pretty sure ill get a pair of these from the audio tailor today. What are they like with heavy rock / metal ?
Not the best one to recreate rock concert in your room but it will be fine for normal listening level.
I am hoping you can help me out with something - I have a pair of EVO 4.2s, and was wondering: have you taken any measurements of your EVO 4.2s? And if so, would you be willing to show me the Impulse graph that you might have gotten from that speaker? Thank you in advance!
I have the measurements for Evo 4.2 but from listening position in stereo mode. Which may not be you’re looking for.
Thanks!

It will sound nice in normal loudness, thanks
@@Tharbamar Thank you for replying and for great reviews!
do you still like listening to these over the B&W 7 series?
To be honest I like to switch them around like I do not like to eat English muffins every morning, thanks
@@Tharbamar good answer. I have heard the 7 series can be harsh or fatiguing. What is more forgiving on lower quality stuff such as MP3s or streaming Pandora?
Evo series is more forgiving, sometimes 700 series sounded brighter than I would like but after the room treatments it’s all good, I enjoy them every time I listen to them, Bass quality and clarity is in the other league, thanks
Kindly let me know which one you enjoyed more Lintons or Evo 4.2s
Evo 4.2 for me, thanks
@@Tharbamar Really? I am surprised by that answer. Because the Linton has a true 8 inch woofer and the 4.2 wooder is really only about 5.5 inches. The specs state that it is a 6.5 inch woofer but they include the decorative ring in that measurement. I would guess that the Lintons would be a much fuller sounding speaker. Just my guess though.
I want these speakers and will most likely buy them, but i find it funny that they say on the back Made in PRC. I've never seen it worded that way before.
Made in China yes PRC never.
Hi, @Tharbamar, what is the best amp under $1K for the EVO4.2?
Yamaha AS-801 is the one I would go for me personally, thanks
@@Tharbamar Thank you very much!
@@Tharbamar Regarding Yamaha AS-801, is it true that the ESS Sabre Dac Chip is “active” only on PC-USB Laptop connection? Or this is “active” for both Optical and Coaxial connection.
What EVO 4.2 connection - Yamaha AS-801 did you use to reach your personal conclusion: “the best amp for the mentioned speakers?”
Thanks a lot, I’m waiting for your feedback.
I've always liked Wharfedale for their voicing and pricing but I haven't heard them recently with an AMT. Heard nothing but decent reviews and nothing that makes them seem undesirable. If I was in the market for new speakers I'd defo check them out.
is pma 600 a good pairing amp or is too natural for evo 4.2?thanx!
It should work well together, you can even play around with tone control, thanks
@@Tharbamar thank you my friend!
Are they in the same class as the polk r 200?
Overall R200 is better sounding and absolutely in different league for bass quality and power handling.
My problem is that i could position the r 200 not far enough from the wall. 5 cm wont be enough or what do you think?
If you've stuffed these on an AV amp or that SMSL class D......well...in a way you're lucky.... you've got a whole new set of speakers to discover when you buy a class A/B with around 100w into 8 and 200w into 4 ohm.
Please see video description for associated components, I do pretty sure know what I do, please do not judge someone base on one video on TH-cam, thanks
@@Tharbamar You miss my point, they work very well with pretty much anything over 40w.....but there is an extra, hidden, bonus to these speakers, and I believe it is to do with the curve into 4ohm in the lower registers that they open up even further with higher power, not necessarily wattage, amplifiers, but strong power rails...and can support more expensive amplification than you'd expect, or is usual for speakers at this price point without becoming the restricting component.
@@DomRivers67 I don't missed your point you should go back and read your comment, you're judging base on one TH-cam video but It don't matter they were good but there are better ones out there now, is it $4500 Amp not expensive enough?
@@DomRivers67Exactly. I have these on a Denon AVR, they sound good. When I use a friend's IcePower 1200AS2 amp they sound much better. Really brings out something special in tracks, we were all quite surprised.
Who is the musician thanks. Can't see her name to small.
Grace Mahya, I have link in video description, thanks
@@Tharbamar thank you ive found her great artist.
Wharfedale has sale in US: EVO 4.2 $999+tax
Sounds like if you were in a concert, except no bass from a subwoofer.
I always wanted to get those speakers but they were a little out of my budget at the time but now after watching your long-term review on them I’ve decided to go for it.
I do have the SMSL DA9 I bought it after watching your review on it as well all that we need to get is the speakers and a decent DAC But my budget for the dog will be under around 400to $500 what would you recommend at that price range thank you very much and keep up the amazing reviews
iFi Zen DAC would be good choice, thanks
Need a list of all the equipments you have bought or tested till date.
Thanks! This or Kef R3? On same music
Smsl da9 or loxjie a30?
A30 is better buy if you have efficient speaker, DA-9 have more power, thanks
@@Tharbamar speakers mission lx2. Obrigado
If you don’t play very loud A30 is should sound nice. Thanks
@@Tharbamar obrigado , um abraço de Portugal.
can I pair with yamaha r n602?
It should sound very nicely. Thanks
@@Tharbamar I thank you
Hi i jus got my evo 4.2 after watching a lot reviews including your. i hooked with vintage sony and then with audiolab 6000a. I don why but it sounded muffled the sound stage is narroow doesn fill the room ( room size os 16 x 14 ft) i then compared it with jbl vintage monitor bookshelf.. and evo jus was under performing. Lot of reviewers spoke about break in . Is it a myth or with it sound better..
I have wharfedale 240s from 2014 those are far better then these evo. Why do i feel so different from the reviews??
It will take awhile to opens up, sometimes it could be acoustic foam blocking the down firing port inside the cabinet, their QC is not as good as used to be.
And my review and experience is base on first gen, not base on current generation which I explained is this video, thanks
Hello, i bought 4.2 evos also, and having same muffled sound like highs are too quiet...sounds terrible: (
I hope they will brake in, brought them yesterday...
Paired them with Su9 dac and da 9 amp
@@sibisi666 hello
Hi there i tried to break in i think is just a myth.. i played musci on it for more than 100 hrs on it over week. Its STILL SOUNDS THE SAME. I am planning to sell it.. for me hi are ok nut lows are really like drumming on wood kind a feel.
