Girl from OZ here. My favourite Bee Gees songs is pre disco no doubt. They came to my high school fete when I was bout 14. They left here just after their record Spicks and Specks was charting You know I am not fond of covers but the Bee Gees do an amazing version of Carol Kings “ Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. I prefer Bee Gees version and Carol Kings version was off an LP called “Tapestry” and that album was huge at that time. Glad to see you appreciate our music of the 60s and 70s how spoilt we were.

The pre-disco period of the Bee Gees ran from 1967 to 1974. Songs from that era was "Massachusetts", "I Started a Joke", "To Love Somebody", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", "Holiday", "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "Run to Me", "Lonely Days", and "World". To put into perspective, Barry was 21 years old when he wrote this song, and the Bee Gees recorded. Most people think Bee Gees, and they automatically think Disco, but they had a HUGE library before they re-invented themselves in the late 70s and did their disco era. They are an amazing band and some of the greatest songwriters of our time. When a band is on the same argument as the Beatles as the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, they did something right. Keep reviewing old school Bee Gees songs, it was some of their best work!

He would sing this in concerts to his wife Linda. The arrangements changed over the years and got more intense. Also, Elvis would do this in concerts in the 70's. Loved Barry even more. FYI, Barry included this as a duet with Dolly on his "Greenfields" album. Jay - they were part of the 60's British bands. They just kept going and going and going.

This song is very pre-disco era. It was released in 1968. It wasn't until the mid 70's (while recording "Nights On Broadway") that Barry realized he could sing falsetto well and it became a signature Bee Gees sound.

If you haven't reacted to "Run to Me" by the Bee Gees yet, that one should be next. It's my favorite of their 1960's pre-disco songs. I prefer all of their non-falsetto songs. Ironically, "Nights on Broadway" is one of my favorite songs of theirs, yet it's one of the first songs they used a falsetto on that I'm aware of.

The outro with only his voice's natural tremelo is what makes this song iconic. When we teens first hear this over the airwaves we were left in stunned silence, not knowing how to categorize this song, and yet were knew immediately that we were listening to something profoundly romantic. This song was slowed danced to at many a teen club dance.

This song gives me chills. Thank you for reviewing it. The Gibb brothers were amazing creative geniuses. They wrote and composed beautiful songs and their non-falsetto voices were gorgeous. The way Barry modulates from intimacy to a powerful crescendo is flawless. His control over vibrato and sustain is impressive. The was a baroque renaissance that occurred in the United Kingdom in the late sixties. This song is a perfect example. The Rolling Stones did similar with Ruby Tuesday. Another group called “The Love Affair followed suit with “A Day Without Love.” There is some irony with “Words” however. While The Bee Gees were reveling in 1977 with their disco hits, Rita Coolidge (known as The Delta Lady) covered “Words” and it became a hit. Her version is a blend of Southern Soul, country, and blues. It is an absolute masterpiece. Rita was married to Kris Kristofferson; they were considered to be musical royalty. This really shows one how much the work of the Gibb brothers is truly respected in the music industry.

I remember this song so well. It came out just at a critical time in my life when I was living 1500 miles from my fiancee and we only had words on the phone or in letters to talk about our feelings.
This is what Robin had to say about 'Words" 'Words' reflects a mood, It was written after an argument. Barry had been arguing with someone, I had been arguing with someone, and happened to be in the same mood. [The arguments were] about absolutely nothing. They were just words. That is what the song is all about; words can make you happy or words can make you sad.

The disco era was truly a blip in the very long career of The Bee Gees. The popularity of that time, however, was truly insane. Many great songs before and after that period- many of which are upbeat and have a groove. But their voices together in love songs is truly angelic. The Only Love is a beautiful song from 1991 with Barry on lead vocals.
