Robin's son, Robin John Gibb, said "When he passed away we went out, they took the equipment away and we came back in, I picked up my phone and found "I Started a Joke" on TH-cam and played it. I put the phone on his chest and that was the first time I broke down. I knew that song and its lyrics were perfect for that moment. That song will always have new meaning to me now."

It's crazy that Barry was the oldest Gibb brother and he's the only one left. He's 78 now. Robin died at 62, Maurice at 53 and Andy passed just five days after he turned 30. That's entirely too much tragedy.
Okay, I've been waiting for you all to realize this. Robin makes the BeeGees what it is. You cannot have the BeeGees sound without Robin at all. The timber and purity of his voice is crazy. He was always overshadowed by Barry, which is why Robin and Barry struggled a lot in their relationship. I think Robin had resentment. I grew up listening to the BeeGees and I will tell you that they were played in my house from the very beginning and through the disco phase. My parents loved them throughout. My mom is 78 and she still listens to the BeeGees all the time. It makes her feel better when she's down. Do not sleep on Robin.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Robin's solo in the song "For Whom the Bell Tolls", the version with the New York city skyline backdrop is probably their most beautiful but sad song ever, certainly Robin's best.
Incredible that Robin was a teenager when he wrote this. Live versions in later years got even more emotional. Next you should try “To Love Somebody” from 1967.
Robin was about 18 when he wrote and sang this. The Bee Gees evolved musically thru their entire career. Pop. rock, folk, psychedelic, country, soul, disco, R&B - they’ve done it all and many of their fans were along for the journey.

I prefer the 60's Bee Gees over the disco Bee Gees. My favorite is I Gotta Get A Message To You. There are so many songs of theirs that are good from the 60's. They all sang lead, not only Barry. ✌️😁❤️🎶🎶🎶
This song has deeper meaning than most realize, all 3 were unique in there own way ! Though this song is considered old in musical reference, it still springs new to the masses who perpetually discover and rediscover the talents of the Bee Gees. Even those of us who have been fans for the span of a generation find new meaning in old lyrics as life carries us into dimensions we have never before explored. Often seen as a spiritual commentary on Robin's part, he has never claimed that to be the basis of the piece, as such. Experience draws us all in a diversity of directions, often all at once, and inspiration is the trickle-down of that overload. I am not one to climb into the great minds of our times and autopsy their brainchild of work but I have an awareness of something woven into the lyric here that I've never before seen discussed. The piece encompasses only eight lines of poetic statement, clean and straight-forward in appearance and delivery, yet steeped in the mystery of a thousand ages. This song leaves naked, parts of the soul we tend to keep covered, even from our own deeper selves. We see in it, our own personal sins of omission that do not look so pretty in black and white and are even more haunting when presented in a package of understated music and single-voiced verse. Although I do see where the spiritual intonation peers through the lyric at us, I see here, too, the personal commentary of an inner moral dilemma being posed by the subject and the step by step process by which he rationalizes his justification for not following his inner personal voice. This person wants desperately to shed his etiquetted skin and stand on the purity of truth rather than cower in civilized silence in the face of injustice. He theorizes the consequences of such an action on his part. He knows his statement will upset the world that, up to this point, was living comfortably in its own shallow self-deception. Because his view is so different from everyone else, he knows this will upset the sedate tranquility of those around him. In defensive retaliation, rather than re-examining, reforming, and admitting to the error of their ways, society would turn its collective, disdainful back on his statement and proclaim the fundamental truth he has exposed to be merely the folly of a prankster. He goes on to see that he will not be taken seriously and cries in the frustration of being the only one who has had this vision of truth and reality. He feels alone and small in the cosmos. At this, he knows the world will take great delight in his outward appearance of weakness and defeat and in their arrogance he knows they will unite in crushing declamation and mercilessly taunt him wherever he goes, all the days of his life. He looks up, seeking heavenly approval and resolve of the issue. He attempts to clear his eyes searching for a sign of the miraculous awakening of those around him. Just as he begins to dry his eyes in the faith that, because of his sincerity of heart, there will surely now be change, he tumbles out of his dream-state into reality. He falls hard from grace back into the moment. The enormity of the entire situation crashes over him like a tidal wave as he sees the ramifications of what he has started by his simple statement of truth. He is paralyzed in thought and can no longer make sense of his own words as they drown in the whirlpool of confusion between human emotion and soulful truth. He eventually dies a broken man because he knows the truth, but never pursues it to the fullest of its intent due to his lack of courage in his convictions. Likewise, he saw himself as wholly inadequate to challenge what he did not approve of, so he never stood up for what he believed in. After his death, civilization perpetuates itself in its blithe ignorance, unscathed by the voice of truth he held within. He is gone, and with him, the potential threat he posed to a thinly-skinned euphoric society. Ultimately, he sees that he had been right and society was truly wrong. He knows then, all too late, that he would have made a difference if he had not given in to his imagined fears. He wasted a lifetime repressing himself and the truth he had once envisioned. He had become his own worst enemy. Furthermore, he had shackled his soul down - not the society he had tried to hold accountable for his lack of action. He ultimately became the very thing he once morally raged against - a silent, self-deceiving member of a pretentious, urbane society. Yes, the joke WAS on him.

Hey guys, "To Love Somebody" is an early Bee Gees song that you have to listen to. I think it's their best early song. And I'm a longtime fan who believes the Bee Gees didn't jump into Disco; Disco jumped into the Bee Gees. Their music was their music, it was just so darn good that you had to get up and dance to it.
Glad you watched this. I'm 67 and have listened to the Bee Gees for a long long time. This is my favorite Bee Gees song. No, it's not the most popular and in fact, not as well known but it gave Robin one of his first chances to show off his wonderfully beautiful and unique vibrato voice. The song is sad and poignant but still delivers the message in a heartfelt way. After all these years, I still tear up listening to it. Thanks for your talent Robin along with your brothers, you are greatly missed.
I'm crying, this is my favorite Bee Gees song which brings to mind how hard & dangerous life of a Vietnam Veteran during the 1960s when virtually everyone in my family & in my country that wished that I was dead? Robin Gibb is the best singer of the Bee Gees, may they Rest In Peace :)
Staying Alive by the BEE GEES 4 you Jay from 1977 their biggest HIT EVER ,JAY you will thank me big time take care Rob Squad God bless you ,GO 70s Bee GEEs

When the Bee Gees went "disco" (it was actually R&B-based), they lost many fans, but gained millions of new ones, and eventually, all of the fans were able to reconcile the two phases as part of a whole incredible body of work. One of the reasons the group broke up temporarily in the late 60s is because Robin decided he could be a star without his brothers, and he did have a substantial solo career, but eventually came back to the group and they made history together.
Loved all the music of the Bee Gees throughout the years. I even went back to the songs that they made in Australia. I saw them perform 4 times throughout all the years. They were always awesome! They would cover their whole range of songs going back to their beginning. I wish Mo and Robin were still alive. I think they all would still be performing and have added Andy in the group also. I am 72 and feel grateful to have been here to know their music.
Not entirely true he had also just got married in '68 and i think there was pressure there too because the couple were non too popular with the rest of the family for a while. Though Maurice helped him with his Robin's Reign single. Much to Barry's wrath.
He sings way too much thru the nose. Worst nasal sound ever. If Barry hadn’t taken over the lead singing, this band would have not been what it became. Hes way too nasally. Music 101, “don’t sing thru your sinuses”

Here are the wemon. Britney Spears Dolly Parton Shakira Alanis Morissette Céline Dion Lucinda Williams Miley Cyrus Taylor Swift Courtney Love Patti Smith And of course, STEVIE FUCKING NICKS! Stick to something you know about please cuz you don't know about singing.
This is one of their most iconic songs. It's Robin's song, and whenever they perform it, Barry turns his back to the stage so Robin gets all the attention. Check out their performance of it in the DVD of their One For All tour.
@@nelerhabarber5602 I'm in the 70's, I remember. Look it up. I did say the earlier music. When the record company wanted to change to Barry singing the leads, it led to a rift between the brothers.

@@hickokhaley No, wrong. Your memory is wrong! 1. The break came because the manager wanted first on may by Barry and not lamplight by Robin on the A side of the record. 2. Fast alle alten bekannten songs (hits) wurden von Barry bzw mit einzelnen (wenigen) Lead TEILEN von Robin gesungen. Words, Spicks and specks, NY mining desaster, Every Minute every second, morning of my life, idea Let There Be Love., world..........Zählen Sie mal frühe (bekannte) Robin lead Lieder auf, mir fallen höchstens 3 oder 4 ein! 3.Barry Gibb:"“Before we were famous was the best time of our lives,” he says. “There was no competition; it didn't matter who sang what. When we had our first number one hit, Massachusetts, Robin sang lead vocals and I don't think he ever got past that; he never felt that anyone else should sing lead vocals after that. And that wasn’t the nature of the group,” he says firmly, “We brought in all the songs; Whoever brings in the idea sings the song.”
@@The_Real_RG3 Agree and his voice also doesn't fit most songs either, for parts yes, but not for the main vocal. Likewise, his falsetto singing wasn't nice. There is only one song in which he sings the lead part in falsetto, "Living together" and there is a TH-cam video with his voice isolated. This sounds really unpleasant and you can hear the difference to Barry's falsetto extremely clearly (from which his falsetto is also available "isolated")!!! Oh, and Barry said once in an interview that Robin often has changed his voice and Barry couldn`t understand WHY, maybe thats the reason I very often don`t like it and sometimes (for whom the bell ..., bodyguard, kiss of life...) I like it!
I just loved Robin’s voice so much. His solo part in “Alone” just gives you goosebumps. What a special group….thank you Bee Gees for the gifts you left to the world.
Personally I rode with the Bee Gees through their complete career. I never considered what they did in the disco era as disco music because that album/movie is what made disco so popular. The Bee Gees were just the Bee Gees to me. Earlier Bee Gees hits featured Robin more. Whoever wrote the song sang the lead on it. Their last album "This Is Just Where I Came In" sort of throws back to earlier Bee Gees. Check it out.
I do love the early Bee Gees too Amber! And Robin was the lead for most of those I believe! They're all fantastic!!! I loved them no matter what they did! They're just such amazingly talented men!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
I never knew this was a BEE GEES song, until this very minute! As usual, I sang along with the song, I remembered every single word, even teared up like always hearing this beautifully sad song. Thank you so much for this one!
Robin’s voice is so incredible in this song….always grabs my heart! This is one group that it still breaks my heart that I never got to see in concert.
Robin was only 17yrs old here , when he sings this live it's amazing, his voice is so hauntingly beautiful ,what a family ,you really need to see him sing it live,❤
Finally! Thank you. I've (along with many others) requested this and many other Bee Gees Robin-lead songs long ago. He was the front man before Barry was, for good reason. Also want to mention that in the disco era, their music was actually R&B (rhythm and blues) but you could dance to it... their music was simply played at discotheques. This song and others from the 1960s was more psychedelic.
He sings way too much thru the nose. Worst nasal sound ever. If Barry hadn’t taken over the lead singing, this band would have not been what it became. Hes way too nasally. Music 101, “don’t sing thru your sinuses”
Music styles change during the 70's. A lot of people stopped listening to the Bee Gees, they thought they had become redundant, and their songs weren't charting until they embraced disco and Saturday Night Fever came out. There changing style didn't bother me, a great song is a great song and I'm always attracted to a magnificent voice. Beautiful choice people, cheers from OZ, Paul.👍😁📀❤️
Indeed Their music producer - Mr. Ardin had a dream to market songs by seeing if one of them could scream such as on "Nights on Broadway (it was Barry who could do the screaming)
For me I love all Bee Gee songs. No one better. Different moods Different songs. All GREAT. Huge Huge Bee Gee Fan. Thank you for playing them. Also love yall ♥
Thank you for reviewing this song! This just makes me cry every time. With Robin's incredible voce, and the lyrics to me mean what it feels like when no one understands you, when everyone feels the opposite of you. Powerful stuff. I'm not quite old enough to have witnessed firsthand their transition to disco, but I've listened to all their albums and am fascinated to see how it played out. Their album "Mr. Natural" was their last pre-disco album, in like '74, and it didn't have any hits, but it's really good and has a lot of hints of things to come. You'll probably never review any of those songs, but "Down the Road" is a real gem!
So glad ya'll are reacting to this song. Im with you,Amber, with early Bee Gees. "To Love Somebody" is a great one too I hope ya;ll will react to sometime. As a music genre I've never have been into Disco
Robin has a voice that melts your heart and makes your soul sing! I cry every time I hear this song. I’m 56 and The Bee Gees are my ultimate favorite group. ❤️🥰😍
I'm a 70-year-old Granny lady. I was a fan of the BeeGees early on. I seem to remember a dry spell when they didn't get much air play on the radio. But they were busy writing songs for other folks...then Saturday Night Fever and disco happened and a whole next career happened for them. I liked disco and their new sound. I live in downstate Illinois but there was no burning of disco records in my neighborhood.
Spend an hour with Bee Gees 1st. It's perhaps the 2nd or 3rd album I purchased as a young lad at 14 years of age and now as a 70 + year old person, it's never been forgotten or removed from my list of monthly plays. The transition from this style to the disco world was necessary for them to make a living and the rest is history. Personally, the progression from their beginning to that time period was amazing and I am not confidant a new listener could ever duplicate that experience, but this group is always a delight, no matter what age group you are part. Thank you for the video.
When you love The Bee Gees, you love all the musical periods. It’s hard not to appreciate all the different aspects with so much talent. Decades of talent and entertainment. I am too young to have experienced the 60’s but like Amber said, going back. I love it all. A fan since 1972.
As you marvel at robins voice, dont forget, 1968. Robin and maurice were 18 until december 22 of that year. 18. Lonely days was the first bg song I fell in love with. I was 5 years old so I didn't know about who sang what songs. I just loved it. Then run to me came out and I fell in love with that one, too.then nights on Broadway and fanny be tender, and I didn't know they were the same group. I thought jive talking was earth wind fire or something. I made a mixed tape of my fave songs off the radio and I had several bg songs on it. My brother heard me playing it and poked his head in my door and said wow you really like the bee gees don't you. That was when I first realized all these songs I loved were by the same group. When sat night fev came out, I loved it all even more. Lonely days mesmerized me and they've had that affect on me ever since, no matter what period, style or genre.
I can't help it but whenever I see & hear Robin sing, I get really emotional knowing he's no longer with us. My God, what a voice. The Bee Gees wrote and performed the songbook of my whole life and I'll always love them for what they gave us all. RIP Robin, Maurice & Andy. 💔💔💔
"I finally died, which started the whole world living". One of the saddest lines ever.

Barry became a Christian early on.
No different from other families
Not crazy at all. Happens all the time.
What had being a Christian got to do with being the eldest …and Barry had said he is spiritual has faith but does not belong to any religion…
“Words”…one my favorite early Bee Gees songs
Got to watch it live on the Ed Sullivan Show

Another great older song by the Bee Gees is "Lonely Days"

Spent 2 weeks at number 1 here in Australia in Feb/March 1969 well known here
Definitely in my top 10 Bee Gees songs of all time.
Robin has always been my favorite. I'm glad I'm not the only one who tears up when he sings this.
Robin’s vibrato is amazing.
"I've Gotta Get A Message To You" is another great song and a monster hit by them from 1968 as well.
Robin’s voice is so ethereal
Staying Alive by the BEE GEES 4 you Jay from 1977 their biggest HIT EVER ,JAY you will thank me big time take care Rob Squad God bless you ,GO 70s Bee GEEs

He sings way too much thru the nose. Worst nasal sound ever. If Barry hadn’t taken over the lead singing, this band would have not been what it became. Hes way too nasally. Music 101, “don’t sing thru your sinuses”
@@The_Real_RG3 - Oh for God sake shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many times the same pasted comment, 5 6 ,7?
At one time Robin was the lead singer , he is my favorite. This song was playing in the background of a video clip of Robin's funeral.
Robin was excellent in their hit To Love Somebody
I don't think Amber has ever been so moved by another Bee Gees song as much as this one.

@@vancelubben5300 it was Barry who sang that!
If you watch the live version, he hits all those notes, every single time. Truly magical talent.
Finally! An absolute classic and one of their early hits that you just HAD to listen to.
This is one of their most iconic songs. It's Robin's song, and whenever they perform it, Barry turns his back to the stage so Robin gets all the attention. Check out their performance of it in the DVD of their One For All tour.
From what I remember Robin sang the lead in most of their early music. I never stopped listening to their music. Such talent.
No, only a few (and often "unknown" ) songs and some lead PARTS! Barry sung much more lead also in their early music, sorry!
@@nelerhabarber5602 I'm in the 70's, I remember. Look it up. I did say the earlier music. When the record company wanted to change to Barry singing the leads, it led to a rift between the brothers.
He sings way too much thru the nose. Worst nasal sound ever. If Barry hadn’t taken over the lead singing, this band would have not been what it became. Hes way too nasally. Music 101, “don’t sing thru your sinuses”
Of the three, Robin was my favourite voice. Such a haunting quality.
The Bee Gees had some great tunes back in those days. Really talented group of brothers - quite amazing actually.
I just loved Robin’s voice so much. His solo part in “Alone” just gives you goosebumps. What a special group….thank you Bee Gees for the gifts you left to the world.
I can listen to Alone 24/7 because of Robin's voice.
One of my favs is "I got to get a message to you, And Barry doing "Words" live
Barry and Dolly Parton singing Words is magnificent.
@@Rogn1 I totally agree

Yeah, Robin deserves respect for his talents.
72 years old. I have always loved the Bee Gees. I still play them constantly. Beatles and Bee Gees are my top groups.
Robin had such a sweet voice.
It’s for the frightened child in all of us, the loser who hides in the corner. It’s a heartbreaking song, and beautiful.
Hi Guys. I'm a 71 year old dude and I love your channel ! I grew up with all this music .
I'm 68 are you that big kid who punched my arm? LOL!
I'm 61 and love the reactions to "our" music 😊
69 here!
Same here but 4 years behind you
Great age, same as mine and we were born at the perfect time to enjoy all the best that happened at just the right time. ✌️
I loved them before Disco, during Disco and after Disco, talent is talent. ❤
I do love the early Bee Gees too Amber! And Robin was the lead for most of those I believe! They're all fantastic!!! I loved them no matter what they did! They're just such amazingly talented men!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Robins voice is so vulnerable and angelic. Definitely my favorite Bee Gees song, sung by my favorite Gibb.
I never knew this was a BEE GEES song, until this very minute! As usual, I sang along with the song, I remembered every single word, even teared up like always hearing this beautifully sad song. Thank you so much for this one!
I came here to say the same. Knew every word and zero idea this was the Bee Gees!! Great song!!
Bee gees songs that showcase Robin's voice are always my favorite.
What? Giving the other brothers props. Finally 😂😊
Finally true educated Bee Gees fans know who the real voice of the group is Robin
Robin’s voice is so incredible in this song….always grabs my heart! This is one group that it still breaks my heart that I never got to see in concert.
Finally! Bravo!
STAYING ALIVE by the Bee Gees from 1977 please Jay
My comment to your question about early Bee Gees fans when disco came out ... Once a Bees Gees fan, always a Bees Gees Fan!!
Always great to hear the Bee Gees, great vocals on this earlier one. 'I got to get a message to you' is another great early one-Colin Ward
God only knows how many times that I have listened to this song through the years and it has never failed to give me chills.
I loved the Bee Gees in the 60s and loved them in the disco era. It proves how adaptable they were musically.
This song is just heartrendingly beautiful.Robin's voice possesses an exquisite crystaline pain. Thanks RobSquad.
You guys know Barry turned 78 on September 1st and it was he and Linda's 54th wedding anniversary.
Who cares about his wife. Why you bringing that up.
Yes it was his bday! I didn't realize it was their Anniversary too. That's wonderful. Ignore the haters! ❤
You? Since you cared enough to comment about a harmless observation someone made about a celebrity they admire?
That song will go down as one of the best in history of music ❤
At last guys. You have played this gem
I kept hoping they wouldn't skip it, even though it's sad.
Robin was only 17yrs old here , when he sings this live it's amazing, his voice is so hauntingly beautiful ,what a family ,you really need to see him sing it live,❤
'Man in the middle' Maurice Gibb you will like this song.
I love this so much... and if it means we're (you're) that much closer to getting to their To Love Somebody (1967), then I couldn't be happier!
Robin’s voice was amazing!
It still is.
I’m 71 and it still causes goosebumps!
Me too! 70 👍
Finally!
Heavenly set of pipes on Robin.. quality every time. Thanks for leaving us your gift, in all the recordings you made.
It's as if once you really hear Robin in "I Started a Joke," you begin to realize he and his voice had been killing it all along.
They should hear Robin sing "Oh Darling," from the Sgt. Pepper soundtrack. He killed it.🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯💗💗💗

I loved the BeeGees in every decade, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s
This song gets me every time. OMG - Robin's Vibrato is chilling. True Classic!
The marvel of Robin Gibb was his soft lilting natural vibrato that ironically gave him such a powerful voice.
Indeed
Their music producer - Mr. Ardin had a dream to market songs by seeing if one of them could scream such as on "Nights on Broadway (it was Barry who could do the screaming)
Yes, musical styles changed during the 70s, and the Bee Gees (and everybody else) changed right along with those styles.
Gotta play their first hit from their debut album, "To Love Somebody" (1967). It's brilliant, and has become a standard.
the Bee Gee's are truly in a class all their own 💖🦋🔥🐲💝
Robin took the lead the most in the early days. He really was the sound of the Bee Gees.
👍
In the early days, Robin sang lead on 12 of almost 80 tracks, when Barry did twice as many.
For me I love all Bee Gee songs. No one better. Different moods Different songs. All GREAT. Huge Huge Bee Gee Fan. Thank you for playing them. Also love yall ♥
When the Bee Gees went into the disco seen nobody that I know stopped listening 🎶 😊❤
This song really highlighted Robins uniquely gifted vocals....
To Love Somebody from 1967
Michael Bolton did a great cover of that as well
Written for Otis Redding but never got to record it.
I love this song. Robins voice is amazing. There are so many Beautiful songs from these guys. Love them. ❤❤❤
Can you just think about it. ..ALL of these brothers had outstanding singing voices! Wow!
❤
I couldn't agree more!
Thank you, Robin Gibb. Thank you for all You've done for music. R.I.P.
My favorite Bee Gees song hands down.

I can't help it but whenever I see & hear Robin sing, I get really emotional knowing he's no longer with us. My God, what a voice. The Bee Gees wrote and performed the songbook of my whole life and I'll always love them for what they gave us all. RIP Robin, Maurice & Andy. 💔💔💔
