"BMX bike impractical" lol it's actually the only bike I ever see myself riding on. It's super maneuverable around traffic and easy to jump up curbs and stuff, plus it's a great work out. I see guys with the bigger bikes using some weird gear ratio where it looks like their going nowhere fast. Then again I've been riding since 12. 33 now.
I agree there are some niche aspects of a BMX bike that give it some advantages, mainly how compact they are. This was originally built as a small "grocery-getter" and for a quick ride and easy to store it really does the job well. Thanks man!

It's just the weight, which ya have to get down to enjoy proper BMX functionality. The first person to get one down to 35 lbs or so with mostly titanium everywhere....winner winner! Cool build dude. I am just starting this same project as of a few days ago. I bought the E-Leaf brand 1500 watt rear hub kit. I won't have to stretch my tail end out but I really like your battery mount idea. I will probably do the same way. I think converting a bmx bike is a great idea
@@Mash3OH3 Roughly: 1000W = 27mph 1500W = 34mph 3000W = 45mph 5000W = 54mph It will vary on a lot of things, but mostly weight (you and the bike), tire size/hardness. After 35-40mph you get diminishing returns for $$$ and power, you have to dramatically increase power to overcome wind resistance. That's why you need to basically 5x the power to roughly double the mph, and this exponent gets larger the faster you go. If you just want to have fun I don't see much of a point in going over 35mph, so 1500W to me is the perfect balance of price/performance, if you want to go faster you will have to pay a lot more. Price increase from 1000w to 1500w is about 20-$50, but price increase from 1500-3000 is about double the cost.
watched the full build and good work.. my only constructive comment is invest in a riv nut insert tool.... you wont regret it. for adding a threaded insert into most applications this would be my tool of choice.. just built a 48v 20ah 1500w 26" mtb does 34mph out of the box and is so much fun. i need to document the build .. well done on your builds.. and keep them coming.. 😁

I didn't have a rivnut tool at that time when I made the video but I do now, I actually used it on one of my more recent builds on the channel 👍 That's awesome, I think 1500W is the best, because it's cheap, fast, and not too scary. I finished my bmx. Top speed 65kmh which is 40mph. Feels safe and only seems to need caliper brakes front and back. It's a lot of fun on the road because I am faster than regular cars considering traffic. I often pull away from red lights faster than cars and I must be getting comments I can't hear lol. Anyways it's great and worth the money. I think overall I put $2500 Canadian into it. 1500w rear motor with a large 52v 21hour Amp battery. Glad I bought the big battery.

you should've use that sledgehammer on bmx frame instead to put a dent on the point where pedal rod was colliding. that dent would let pedal rod pass freely.

Id just use an ixf crankset so youd also have a nice sealed bearing crankset and they come with spacers so you can bring out the cranks and align the chain
My first ebike was a hub motor hooked to a BMX bike, little piece of sh!t could hit 35 miles an hour on the side of the highway. 25 to 30 going up the mountainside if I pedal with it. The thing was an absolute monster. Got hit commuting it to work when I moved up to Indy, rip be too the tiny g
@@hightech-lowlife yeah I rebuilt it afterwards with a bike frame that I got from my boss, it's about 20 lb heavier and it's never felt quite like it, let alone coming off the line from stop, but I'm a little higher up off the ground so people tend to see me a little bit better. The top speed hasn't really changed but, the range tanked by about a couple of miles (14 to the 22-ish now)
Calling that bike bmx is a stretch lol. Also bmx bikes are awesome. the perfect suburban hooligan machine. I am currently turning my specialized p24 bmx bike into electric. I'm using the grin all axle hubmotor. It's a front hub but I'm mounting it on rear with 15mm by 110 mm axle option. My bmx rear dropouts are 14mm by 110 mm so hopefully only 1mm of modification necessary.
Thanks man! BMX bikes are super fun!! That should work easily. I originally was going to put a front hub on the rear for this build, but then there wouldn't be a way to mount a freewheel so the pedals would not work. I still wanted to pedal sometimes 👍Good luck man!
@@jonbrooks4376 I used the all axle motor from ebikes ca or grin tech. it's only a front motor so I can't use pedal since I put on rear. I had to grind a bit as axle was a bit thicker than 14 mm
I grew up riding motocross and BMX. With BMX I got to compete as a "pro" for a short while. Anyway, to this day I prefer BMX even on some mountain bike trails. At least the downhills lol. The uphills? I'm walking a ton lol. But, I may have to do something along these lines just for fun. The added weight, if I adjust with suspension, could actually help a little with control.
That's awesome man! Totally BMX does have its advantages, especially for trick riding as they are most maneuverable 👍 It's definitely one of the fun builds I've made, tons of power on a tiny frame.
@@hightech-lowlife I think I'll need to lower the battery for weight distribution...especially for the mountainous trails here in south western PA. And, I'll 100% have to throw forks on...not too worried about the back suspension. But, I'm liking this particular rear hub drive. The mid-drives are tremendous, but in a BMX I'd be smashing it around way too much lol. Edit:. I know that doing a mountain bike would be more intelligent. But, I can't stand the way that they handle and how you sit...I never could.
@@jasonschwartz9481 Yes you could hang the battery from the bottom tube, as long as it doesn't interfere with the front tire 👍I personally like hub motors more than mid drives, but I will be doing another mid drive build somewhat soon as it's been a while since I've had one. I think mountain bikes should be better for downhill applications, but if you're more comfortable on a BMX then that's the best for you!
@@hightech-lowlife mountain bikes definitely are, but if I can keep the weight lite enough than I just have more fun with BMX. I'm going to check out your edirtbike build too. After I do one of these I think that's my next project. I have 2 sons that are 11 and 13, and both ride moto. However, around this area there just aren't that many twinkle left where they won't call the police on dirtbikes. So, I was looking at the Sur-ron's and, Segways, and others. But, the only one that I'd feel comfortable spending money on for them is the X160, and it has no range. So, building one seems like the more economic way... Plus, I can start them out slower and upgrade over time.

One advantage of the ebikes is they are very quiet so much less likely to piss off some neighbors 👍 The sur-rons (and styles like that) are cool, but are pretty pricey. I would go that route too just build something and upgrade over time, plus it might get your sons interested in the mechanical side of it which is always a plus for developing brains - figuring things out and problem solving, getting used to finding workarounds and solution to adversity, I think it's really good for humans!
Is there any kits will allow you to just slip the rear wheel on without modifications to the back of a 20" bike? My luck one side would be bent out farther then the other.
Not that I'm aware of any, BMX has 110mm dropouts, and most motor kits are 135mm. It's nearly impossible to align the bends perfectly, and you're only stretching 20mm, which is less than an inch, which is less than half an inch on each side, so it's a very small amount 👍Just go for it!
Thanks man! I got this one on aliexpress, if you check the comments I linked it many times before. But you should be able to put a freewheel (single sprocket) on any hub motor 👍 The threads are the same for cassette or single speed.

Thanks man!! That's cool, I'm not too familiar with that bike, but upon looking it up, it looks like a more standard folder. The thing with these is that they have smaller wheels (20") but are also somewhat "fat-tire" (2.4") A lot of the kits and hubs I am familiar with fit more standard type bike frames (26" MTB, 20" BMX, etc...) so I don't know a lot of options for this type of bike frame that you have specifically, although I'm sure there are (or suppose likely there are). Most likely the stock hub motor can handle more than the factor controller and battery though, so you may want to try just upgrading those first, although if you're putting too much power it could cause issues, so it really depends. I would first think about why you're upgrading and what your goals of the upgrades are (specifically). Once you know that then you can figure out what you will need to fulfill those goals. Thank you!

Or just remove the crank , and replace with foot pegs, a crank and chain is not really needed. I really wish you would have done some performance testing and documentation so people will understand how fast 3,000 watts will go
Next BMX will have a full suspension, the thing with these newer fat tire bikes with all the goodies is they are quite pricey, I got this bike for free! I might try fabricating my own mods (fat tire accommodations + suspension + disks) for the next BMX iteration. Thanks for the feedback!
U should put a 44 tooth sprocket up from since the rear is 16 tooth. For gearing if you have a 26 tooth sprocket u want a 9 tooth cassette and for a 36 tooth sprocket you want a 13 tooth freewheel and for 44 tooth u want 16 tooth freewheel.
When your bike goes 45MPH you don't ever need to pedal 👍 you can if you want, but for most of your riding the pedals are there to rest your feet, you'd need some crazy large sprocket to even have a high enough ratio to assist going 20+. Once the sprockets get so large they will look strange, and also possibly start to collide with other things (controller, etc).
But without like cranks and stuff wouldn’t that just make it like a electric motorcycle by law tho?. Also would it be a good idea to hook up like 2 60 volt batteries on a bmx to jump it?. Also how fast would it go like 100mph or something lol
@@sushuki4833 Well, if you want to pedal any bike over 20/25 mph you're going to need something like a rohloff hub (very expensive), any normal bicycle setup is not going to be able to provide the ratio to even get up to speed to the bike, let alone surpass it enough to where your pedaling would even matter at all 👍 Doubling the voltage does not double the speed, plus you need a system (motor, controller, batteries) that are made for that voltage. Wind resistance becomes the biggest factor to overcome, after 40mph, the energy needed for even small increments of speed increase is exponential. That's why a 1000W motor can get you to 28mph, while a 12000W will get you around 60, that's 12x the power, for 2x the speed increase. The faster you got the more power you'd need for even small gains.
I think for this application you'd actually want a larger chainring, the gearing on this is already very short due to the much larger freewheel from the hub, the freewheel that came with this bike was the smallest one I have ever seen and barely larger than the axle itself. As it is right now, pedaling is nearly useless as after you're going about 5mph your legs are moving too fast. I think going larger would be more comfortable and efficient as it would put you in the cruising speed of 15-20mph where you could still pedal at higher speeds, even with some assist from the throttle. It depends on what you're going for, but unless you're climbing steep hills, the way the gearing is right now, it's not very useful. Also having 3000W makes pedaling even more useless unless you really wanted to.
Got it. I had a similar project, i wanted to ride a 12 inch kids bike but the chainring was so small and couldn’t go fast, then i tried to put bigger chainring, i did but i had to bent the frame

Source motors and controllers from Grin engineering... Also Canadian, like me 😊 High tech - yes lowlife - nyet Pay attention to proper braking and controls, it isn't that hard with all the options... Without getting too complicated, yes for the most part. 👍 From my personal testing and experience (with all other things roughly equal): 1000W = 27mph 1500W = 34mph 3000W = 45mph 5000W = 54mph You'll see that the faster you want to go, the more power you require to gain even a little more top speed. Around the 40mph mark it's diminishing returns as wind resistance becomes the greatest factor to overcome. I'd say for 95% of people you can have a lot of fun for not much $$$ in the 1000 ~ 1500W range. 30mph on a 'bicycle' is extremely fast! The more power you want, your bike starts to get heavier, and a lot more expensive, usually have to upgrade to a 72v system, etc. I'll make a video on this subject of speed and watts and pricing, breaking down what I know. However im just on the ropes as to either get a 52v battery which can probably accommodate my 48v rear hub motor (my controller can support 52v) OR Get a 48v and 3000w or higher. Which would you recommend for more TOP speed. A new 52v 20ah battery? Or get a rear hub motor with higher Watts BUT only on 48v only. This is where im currently stuck deciding. My current battery is a 48v 19.2ah battery. Let me know no rush
@@ripp3rjak934 48 to 52v will not be a significant difference: th-cam.com/video/f_mCw5RnguU/w-d-xo.html When you say 'hub motor with higher watts' do you mean both the hub motor + controller, like a whole new kit? That would make more of a difference. If you're just upgrading the motor itself, probably won't see any difference if you're not changing the controller (which will allow more power). You can probably squeeze more power out of the motor you have, just by giving it more watts from a better/different controller or a battery that can deliver more amps. Usually you'll want to match the components you have, if you put on a more powerful motor you'll want a controller and battery that can feed it more power. How fast are you going right now and how fast would you like to go?
@@hightech-lowlife My controller is programmable from 36v to 72v. Basically it can accommodate any voltage of battery. So should I get a 52v 20ah battery? or should I just keep my current 48v 19.2ah battery and just replace my current 48v 1000w rear hub motor to a 48v 5000w Which one will give me more TOP speed. A battery change or a higher wattage motor.
@@ripp3rjak934 If it's programmable then I would try adjusting it to output more amps from the battery you have (unless you're already maxed out, then go for a battery that can discharge more amps). Going to 52V will give you roughly a 10% increase in power. Changing the motor won't make any difference if you can't deliver more power (amps) to it. Usually the motor rated power will just show you what it can handle from your battery and controller, it's not an indicator of what it will actually output, that comes from your battery and controller. That's why you usually want to upgrade all components together, as as they are dependent on one another. You won't gain any speed or power by increasing the motor alone, as all that is doing is allowing handling of a greater amount of power from your battery/controller. You can squeeze more power out of the motor you have by either getting a battery that can dump more amps, or adjusting your controller to do that. If you have a very powerful battery and controller but a smaller motor, you risk overloading/overheating it. If you have a smaller battery and controller but a huge motor it will only go as fast as you can deliver the power, so most of that will be a waste as you won't be using the potential plus it will weigh more and be more expensive. If you're trying to go faster for cheaper, then I would upgrade the battery or controller (or both) first (you say your controller is programmable, so I would just adjust that first, doesn't cost anything to program 👍). Once you've saturated what your motor can take, then upgrade the motor to the power level you're delivering. The takeaway is that all the components are interlinked, if you just upgrade one element in the drivetrain, most likely you'll just create a bottleneck.
That would have cut into the PCB, and also render the water resistance useless. U-bolts would have slipped with the weight of the battery and the top tube being perfectly circular. These frames are overbuilt for my use 👍

So I’ll be getting that since it’s made for jumping and stuff and idk if that aliexoress stuff can handle such pressures of jumping lol. Gonna take it when it gets here once I buy it in like February and then like go to slaughter pen. I’ll also be getting a suspension fork for it as well lol.

How fast do 1500w can go?

I finished my bmx. Top speed 65kmh which is 40mph.
Feels safe and only seems to need caliper brakes front and back. It's a lot of fun on the road because I am faster than regular cars considering traffic. I often pull away from red lights faster than cars and I must be getting comments I can't hear lol.
Anyways it's great and worth the money. I think overall I put $2500 Canadian into it.
1500w rear motor with a large 52v 21hour Amp battery. Glad I bought the big battery.

You could have took the crank off and threw a couple washer spacers on the side that wasnt clearing the frame.
It may be possible, but I'm not sure if you can shim this type of crank 👍

@@hightech-lowlife yeah I rebuilt it afterwards with a bike frame that I got from my boss, it's about 20 lb heavier and it's never felt quite like it, let alone coming off the line from stop, but I'm a little higher up off the ground so people tend to see me a little bit better. The top speed hasn't really changed but, the range tanked by about a couple of miles (14 to the 22-ish now)

I'm using the grin all axle hubmotor. It's a front hub but I'm mounting it on rear with 15mm by 110 mm axle option. My bmx rear dropouts are 14mm by 110 mm so hopefully only 1mm of modification necessary.

I grew up riding motocross and BMX. With BMX I got to compete as a "pro" for a short while. Anyway, to this day I prefer BMX even on some mountain bike trails. At least the downhills lol. The uphills? I'm walking a ton lol. But, I may have to do something along these lines just for fun. The added weight, if I adjust with suspension, could actually help a little with control.

And, I'll 100% have to throw forks on...not too worried about the back suspension. But, I'm liking this particular rear hub drive. The mid-drives are tremendous, but in a BMX I'd be smashing it around way too much lol.

@@jasonschwartz9481 Yes you could hang the battery from the bottom tube, as long as it doesn't interfere with the front tire 👍I personally like hub motors more than mid drives, but I will be doing another mid drive build somewhat soon as it's been a while since I've had one. I think mountain bikes should be better for downhill applications, but if you're more comfortable on a BMX then that's the best for you!

After I do one of these I think that's my next project. I have 2 sons that are 11 and 13, and both ride moto. However, around this area there just aren't that many twinkle left where they won't call the police on dirtbikes. So, I was looking at the Sur-ron's and, Segways, and others. But, the only one that I'd feel comfortable spending money on for them is the X160, and it has no range. So, building one seems like the more economic way... Plus, I can start them out slower and upgrade over time.

One advantage of the ebikes is they are very quiet so much less likely to piss off some neighbors 👍 The sur-rons (and styles like that) are cool, but are pretty pricey. I would go that route too just build something and upgrade over time, plus it might get your sons interested in the mechanical side of it which is always a plus for developing brains - figuring things out and problem solving, getting used to finding workarounds and solution to adversity, I think it's really good for humans!

Is there any kits will allow you to just slip the rear wheel on without modifications to the back of a 20" bike? My luck one side would be bent out farther then the other.
Not that I'm aware of any, BMX has 110mm dropouts, and most motor kits are 135mm. It's nearly impossible to align the bends perfectly, and you're only stretching 20mm, which is less than an inch, which is less than half an inch on each side, so it's a very small amount 👍Just go for it!

Thanks man! I got this one on aliexpress, if you check the comments I linked it many times before. But you should be able to put a freewheel (single sprocket) on any hub motor 👍 The threads are the same for cassette or single speed.

Thanks man!! That's cool, I'm not too familiar with that bike, but upon looking it up, it looks like a more standard folder. The thing with these is that they have smaller wheels (20") but are also somewhat "fat-tire" (2.4") A lot of the kits and hubs I am familiar with fit more standard type bike frames (26" MTB, 20" BMX, etc...) so I don't know a lot of options for this type of bike frame that you have specifically, although I'm sure there are (or suppose likely there are).
Most likely the stock hub motor can handle more than the factor controller and battery though, so you may want to try just upgrading those first, although if you're putting too much power it could cause issues, so it really depends.
I would first think about why you're upgrading and what your goals of the upgrades are (specifically). Once you know that then you can figure out what you will need to fulfill those goals.

U should put a 44 tooth sprocket up from since the rear is 16 tooth. For gearing if you have a 26 tooth sprocket u want a 9 tooth cassette and for a 36 tooth sprocket you want a 13 tooth freewheel and for 44 tooth u want 16 tooth freewheel.
When your bike goes 45MPH you don't ever need to pedal 👍 you can if you want, but for most of your riding the pedals are there to rest your feet, you'd need some crazy large sprocket to even have a high enough ratio to assist going 20+. Once the sprockets get so large they will look strange, and also possibly start to collide with other things (controller, etc).
But without like cranks and stuff wouldn’t that just make it like a electric motorcycle by law tho?. Also would it be a good idea to hook up like 2 60 volt batteries on a bmx to jump it?. Also how fast would it go like 100mph or something lol
@@sushuki4833 Well, if you want to pedal any bike over 20/25 mph you're going to need something like a rohloff hub (very expensive), any normal bicycle setup is not going to be able to provide the ratio to even get up to speed to the bike, let alone surpass it enough to where your pedaling would even matter at all 👍
Doubling the voltage does not double the speed, plus you need a system (motor, controller, batteries) that are made for that voltage. Wind resistance becomes the biggest factor to overcome, after 40mph, the energy needed for even small increments of speed increase is exponential. That's why a 1000W motor can get you to 28mph, while a 12000W will get you around 60, that's 12x the power, for 2x the speed increase. The faster you got the more power you'd need for even small gains.

I think for this application you'd actually want a larger chainring, the gearing on this is already very short due to the much larger freewheel from the hub, the freewheel that came with this bike was the smallest one I have ever seen and barely larger than the axle itself.
As it is right now, pedaling is nearly useless as after you're going about 5mph your legs are moving too fast. I think going larger would be more comfortable and efficient as it would put you in the cruising speed of 15-20mph where you could still pedal at higher speeds, even with some assist from the throttle.
It depends on what you're going for, but unless you're climbing steep hills, the way the gearing is right now, it's not very useful. Also having 3000W makes pedaling even more useless unless you really wanted to.
Got it. I had a similar project, i wanted to ride a 12 inch kids bike but the chainring was so small and couldn’t go fast, then i tried to put bigger chainring, i did but i had to bent the frame

Without getting too complicated, yes for the most part. 👍
From my personal testing and experience (with all other things roughly equal):
1000W = 27mph
1500W = 34mph
3000W = 45mph
5000W = 54mph
You'll see that the faster you want to go, the more power you require to gain even a little more top speed. Around the 40mph mark it's diminishing returns as wind resistance becomes the greatest factor to overcome.
I'd say for 95% of people you can have a lot of fun for not much $$$ in the 1000 ~ 1500W range. 30mph on a 'bicycle' is extremely fast! The more power you want, your bike starts to get heavier, and a lot more expensive, usually have to upgrade to a 72v system, etc.

Well currently i have a 48v 1000w set up. It’s great so far. However im just on the ropes as to either get a 52v battery which can probably accommodate my 48v rear hub motor (my controller can support 52v)

When you say 'hub motor with higher watts' do you mean both the hub motor + controller, like a whole new kit? That would make more of a difference. If you're just upgrading the motor itself, probably won't see any difference if you're not changing the controller (which will allow more power). You can probably squeeze more power out of the motor you have, just by giving it more watts from a better/different controller or a battery that can deliver more amps.
Usually you'll want to match the components you have, if you put on a more powerful motor you'll want a controller and battery that can feed it more power.

@@ripp3rjak934 If it's programmable then I would try adjusting it to output more amps from the battery you have (unless you're already maxed out, then go for a battery that can discharge more amps). Going to 52V will give you roughly a 10% increase in power. Changing the motor won't make any difference if you can't deliver more power (amps) to it. Usually the motor rated power will just show you what it can handle from your battery and controller, it's not an indicator of what it will actually output, that comes from your battery and controller.
That's why you usually want to upgrade all components together, as as they are dependent on one another. You won't gain any speed or power by increasing the motor alone, as all that is doing is allowing handling of a greater amount of power from your battery/controller. You can squeeze more power out of the motor you have by either getting a battery that can dump more amps, or adjusting your controller to do that.
If you have a very powerful battery and controller but a smaller motor, you risk overloading/overheating it. If you have a smaller battery and controller but a huge motor it will only go as fast as you can deliver the power, so most of that will be a waste as you won't be using the potential plus it will weigh more and be more expensive.
If you're trying to go faster for cheaper, then I would upgrade the battery or controller (or both) first (you say your controller is programmable, so I would just adjust that first, doesn't cost anything to program 👍). Once you've saturated what your motor can take, then upgrade the motor to the power level you're delivering.
The takeaway is that all the components are interlinked, if you just upgrade one element in the drivetrain, most likely you'll just create a bottleneck.

Next time cut the controller box not the cheap frame and dont drill into the cheal frame use u bolts
That would have cut into the PCB, and also render the water resistance useless. U-bolts would have slipped with the weight of the battery and the top tube being perfectly circular. These frames are overbuilt for my use 👍
Modding the BB could save a lot of that time for crank clearance

Thx for the link for everything but I already found a 50mph FULL complete e bike kit from the uk for like 840 bucks. So I’ll be getting that since it’s made for jumping and stuff and idk if that aliexoress stuff can handle such pressures of jumping lol. Gonna take it when it gets here once I buy it in like February and then like go to slaughter pen. I’ll also be getting a suspension fork for it as well lol.
