Hey, just wanna add my personal experience on one of the predictions you've made in the video. I bought an A1 last year in a sale, hoping to print some cool minis and models for fun, but nowadays my parents are requesting more and more utility prints for the house than projects I was planning on working on instead. So far I've printed a custom kitchen organizer, a box for mahjong tiles, a few magnet encasement keychains to test if pots are compatible with induction cooktops, all sorts of niche items. I think 3d printers have a far bigger impact than just the niche hobby community in the coming years!
I just stay in my little corner of the 3D printing world, designing and printing household accessories that work for me, then share them to Printables for others. A battery holder, an Apple Watch charger holder, wall mounts for all my remotes and gadgets, etc. Looking forward to learning more from your awesome channel in 2025!
Ditto. As someone who's been into this hobby for many years, it disappoints me to see people charge for their models and not freely share them (like I do). On the other hand, I'm really glad that more and more "3D printers just work" and for Printables.

Right. I recently saw a tool review channel (think cordless drills and such) promoting a Bambu printer. Totally out of left field. Made me question everything else they said for the past year.
I am happy that it is more accessible across different hobbies and industries. I have many hobbies and some are just now embracing 3d printing, making more files and ideas available.

+1 to reviewing FreeCAD 1.0, but do an honest review (like your other ones) and don't praise it just b/c it's OpenSource (again, just like your previous reviews). I'm a big fan of OpenSource, but disliked FreeCAD in the past due to its UI/UX being clunky. It will be interesting to see if (in your opinion) that has changed.
Considering Ondsel shutting down, it'll be useful to detail what was brought into the upstream for v1.0 and what other improvements might be coming. As a user of FreeCAD, I miss Onshape's intuitiveness (and other features) but enjoy it's unrestricted-Freeness, if that's a thing.
I don’t run into things I can’t do in FreeCAD any more, and I find it more responsive than SolidWORKs. I haven’t used Fusion 360 in years because I dislike Autodesk and don’t want my designs tethered to their platform. It still crashes occasionally, but learning to use it is like learning to use any CAD software, it does basically the same things, but the names and buttons are all different. Driving designs off spreadsheets and making parametric parts that can be reused is doable, but not intuitive. I’d say it’s certainly usable but there’s a lot more friction for some of the more complex things
I've been a follower for less than a year, but I wanted to tell you that you and your channel are one of two that I recommend to other friends, just starting in 3D Printing. Like you, I am more interested in practical prints or prints that allow me to learn something new or prints that enhance what I am already interested in (say hi to your sister!). Keep up the great work! (Waiting for the next cheque to get that book!)

I bought my original Prusa MK1 in 2016 (May) and found your channel soon thereafter, thanks for YEARS of fine videos, reviews and comments. My MK1 BTW is now a MK2S and still prints like a champ. Bought a new 3D printer this last year because frankly the new printers have so many features that it isn't a fight to use the machine anymore. Almost all of the printing I do is either little toys or household items. Being able to make custom sized bins, mounting hardware and the like is a huge deal and it all costs a few bucks to make. It's a no brainer

Angus, yes! More interesting mechanics, please! There's plenty of reviews out there. But I absolutely love your videos showing interesting mechanisms. I've gone looking for books on old mechanism designs because of you. You have a unique insight into ones that are a) just interesting, b) can solve a design problem and/or c) have unique printability. Would love to see a whole series on that! With 3d printing unlocking so many possibilities, it's so easy to get stuck in simple mechanical thinking. Show us the way out! ❤
OnShape is still predominantly running on your local hardware; it's only really cloud computing in the file sharing sense. It *is* possible that it offloads some expensive algorithmic stuff to the cloud, I don't know, but the UI and 3D graphics will all be done locally.
@@MakersMuse I mean I haven't looked that closely, I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out, but it's pretty unlikely. Cloud rendering can be achieved by delivering it to the client via video stream, but you would likely notice encoding artefacts and interaction latency in this case. It's much more likely it's rendered locally; even low end GPU chipsets are surprisingly capable these days, and from a graphics hardware point of view, CAD isn't really that demanding. (For what it's worth I'm a professional software engineer, and I have deployed 3D graphics web apps. I tried linking but TH-cam is extra fastidious about filtering links.)
@@MakersMuse I noticed huge performance differences when running OnShape on my laptops integrated GPU vs the discrete GPU, if that means anything. Also whilst using OnShape my browser uses a similar amount of RAM as AutoDesk Inventor.
What the fk does "predominantly" even mean in this context? If a single instruction in the code needs a server to work and you are cut off from the server, congratulations your expensive pay to not own and be owned by being spied on and advertised to program is now a brick and you're regretting not using open source or a completely localised cracked pirate version of expensive software like Fusion.
@@MakersMuseOutside of renders, most CAD models are just meshes with no shaders or textures attached, which even mobile GPUs are now more than capable of handling. The main resource hog graphics-wise would likely be tessellating the solid geometry to triangles for the GPU, which would scale with model complexity. I think the reason a lot of other CAD packages feel slow even on powerful hardware are due to their age, and a lack of attention to their rendering pipelines. The graphical requirements of CAD haven’t really changed much over time, and full scale product renders for marketing are normally done in a separate mode or application, meaning that new CAD software can substantially improve over older packages by writing their own rendering stacks that make effective use of modern hardware, and are actually optimised. This I feel is especially the case given that most commercial CAD packages like SolidWORKs or Siemens NX are expected to be run on workstations with NVIDIA Quadro’s or similar. SolidWORKs doesn’t even recognise non-Quadro nvidia GPUs and disables features unless you use a registry hack, so it’s likely there’s very little interest in optimising those rendering stacks to operate well outside of the narrow range of hardware most of their big clients are running. It’s easy to underestimate just how much compute power even a low-end mobile phone has nowadays, and given the graphical standards for CAD products haven’t really shifted since the 2000s, it’d be surprising if it couldn’t handle it decently well. I expect you’d run into more performance issues with complex operations, since that’s where most of the heavy compute work in CAD is done
You are completly right about 3D printing in niche hobbies. I'm a kitebuilder and watch more and more fellow kite builders using 3D printer to print connectors for their kites. Yes, there are now kites which wouldn't be possible without 3D printing.

Hi Angus, I have watched your videos for a few years now. Very very helpful. I had a few months back been asked by a close family member for my recommendation for a 3d printed to purchase. After asking a few questions on what their needs are, i recommended the p1s. I had to call them back today to change my recommendation to an mk4s since the terms of use have changed. A video came up in my feed of bambu's new terms being explained. Hope you make a quick short to get the message out to the bambu community so they might reach out to bambu to change their policy terms
I still love building them from scratch! I have some proprietary (Bambu/creality), but my favorite machine is my 450x450x585 home built printer. It’s fast accurate and quiete and I can continue to mod it any way I want! Next goal is to add a quick change tool head and put a cnc and laser tool head on it. Great video!
I love combat robotics and I think that with recent printers such as the a1 mini printing durable materials for a cheap price and more user friendly cad softwares, the skill barriers that prevented people from have lessened allowing the community to grow. Can’t wait to see your next robot combat video!🎉
As someone who has had to deal with 3D printing models for customers, the sheer increase in models that have to have their mesh and geometry manually adjusted to be properly air-tight for 3D printing is so unbelievably painful. It's so easy to tell they've just gotten an AI to generate a model put no thought into the design or had any input on what it actually looks like, pretty sad.
I might have gotten lucky with mine, but I was a little saddened to see the Tevo Tarantula footage when you spoke about bad printers. It was my first printer, helped me learn a lot, was my workhorse for the longest time and, baring some external circumstances, would still work well if I had the time to finish the upgrade. I know that's not the point of the video, and that my affection is irrational. Still thought I'd speak up about a really old printer no one really cares about anymore ;) Good video as always, cheers!
Instead of being bothered by a bad review, these companies should take the feedback and improve their products. I appreciate that your reviews are real.
I hope local 3D printing on-demand farms, like Slant3D, become more common. Instead a products being stored in a warehouse and shipped from across the world; a local shop can print orders as needed.
Happy New Year Angus! Hoping 2025 is good to all and the 3d Printing community. I think we will see some interesting new feature introduced to the FDM market, I just hope that they continue to listen to the customer and take some extra time on QC and practical feature sets. I would also love to see more customization options for the top few models each company is making, make them so they can be upgraded easily and keep all spare parts readily available for the long term. I prefer to pay a few dollars extra for premium components especially any drive train components. I do believe the model that Prussa has maintained is a great one, make these machines upgradeable and always keep the parts available for easy resplacement and upgradeability.
My kids and I are definitely looking forward to more from you (especially puzzles). You were critical in my getting a grasp on the hobby early on, as well as my sons' interest in it. Keep on rockin'!
One thought on the machine review price cap -- If you do see some new, interesting feature on a higher priced printer, it may still be worth talking about just the feature rather than a doing a review. Frequently these types of features will end up trickling down into the more mainstream devices, so in my opinion it's nice to learn about things that we may see in consumer devices in the future as well.
The slicer software is going to become subscription based. That’s why all the 3d printer manufacturers keep releasing their own version of the same software. Right now is the golden age of 3d printing, enjoy it while it lasts.
The 3d printers working well enough to focus on what is printed is a game changer. I got an A1 mini for miniature wargame prints but also did some functional prints. Learn some CAD and designed a few custom parts as well. I didn't bother with printers before because it seemed like calibrating them was a hobby by itself. I can see why tinkering with them is interesting but it wasn't something I wanted to add to my pile of hobbies. These newer printers are good tools and I generally don't have to tinker.
9:16 When I first started getting into 3D printing about 2 years ago, my girlfriend didn't really care about it. After a few useful household items, she is hooked. Anything she thinks she needs in the house she will just say "3D print it". Some of my less tech savvy friends also started requesting prints they see on Instagram or youtube. Its cool to see a hobby that you got into for the love of tinkering turn into a space for people to improve their daily lives with useful prints.

Newer movies still come out on DVD and BR, but yes you can go nostalgic and buy a good old movie for a dollar (especially since people were dumping them at antique stores since 2010) instead of renting it on Amazon for $8-15, plus you can snag a DVD player for $15 new. Get director's commentary, extra scenes, AND Easter egg menus on top of it. You can also rip with Handbrake and drop the mp4 into a Jellyfin server if you really need to stream it. Internet goes down? I can stream it locally or pull a movie from my pile of DVDs. No restrictions. Can't cancel your account to your DVDs. However there's definitely a "false" nostalgia out there too..m kids that are far too young to know about it are collecting Laserdisc and VHS movies.
You opened up a lot of good questions. I am particularly concerned about what will happen to Mesh Mixer. There are all kinds of CAD options but none that take the approach of good old Mesh Mixer. I am really sorry it is dying out when it really should be expanding. I still use MM a lot and I guess there are other ways to do those things but It was a great tool. 'Glad you continue to recognize the community out here.
I never thought 3D printers could be used for household items until my friend showed me how she prints custom parts for her kitchen. If this becomes mainstream, we might all be printing our own DIY solutions at home! 🏠💡
i'm hoping for some smaller corexy printers, also its going to be interesting to see what bambu labs has up their sleeve, i hope its not just a giant x1 carbon.. they seem pretty focused on the software side though so i hop the smaller models get updated or at least refreshed
If you’re doing more on RC stuff I’d love to see some coverage of the very basics of how to approach that from an electronics POV (how to control motors, how to do RC, etc) or even recommendations as to learning resources for that elsewhere.
Watch out on your early days of 3D printing with it, don't get too carried away printing lots of trinkets & fidget toys, unless that's what you bought it for :)
Make sure you keep the bed clean. Even oils in your skin can affect adhesion, and you won't necessarily see it. One of the top things I see when people ask for help online is when stuff no longer sticks to the bed.
A drop of isopropyl alcohol on tissue is good for cleaning the bed, and if you find TPU prints stick too hard, a drop if isopropyl on the edge of the print will help loosen it from the bed.
It's not. bambu has a 1.4 consumer rating for a reason. When your A1 breaks down, like all bambu lab 3d printers, bambu lab will ignore your support tickets.
About AI training data: I’ve been selling 3D models through a large “professional-level” service for over a decade. Recently, I noticed a substantial sale that actually exceeded the combined value of all my models. “Hmm… that’s odd,” I thought. The same day, I received an email from the service explaining the large sale amount. Apparently, they were now offering large portions of their modeling catalog to corporations to be used as training data. To their credit, they had established guardrails to ensure the models wouldn’t be resold “as is.” Additionally, if you didn’t want your models to be used as training data, you could opt out of the program. The frustrating part, however, was that the program’s announcement and launch were never directly communicated to artists (e.g., via email). It was only announced on their website. Since the only part of the site I regularly use is for uploading my work and checking on sales, I completely missed the announcement. They also didn't quantify exactly what a "corporation" is (e.g. size, products, etc.). lol
The sad thing about digital minimalism is, that the very same people who looked down on you for not having an iPhone, will now look down on you for having an iPhone.
I think new materials and higher temp printing, at a consumer level, are in the pipeline this year. The QIDI4 Plus with it's ability to print pps -cf is a game changer. Plus Polymaker's Fiberon line, which includes pps-cf just came out. This big filament company will be pressuring 3D printing companies to make their printers work for this material. I see an arms race on the horizon... by the end of the year we might have a QIDI 5 printing PEKK.
Let me tell you something you probably didn't know....Dentistry is digitalizing a lot the past 1-2 years.The clinics are getting intraoral scanners and the dental technicians are printing models for the teeth. Temporarily crowns and castable items are made using 3d printers. Im a dental technician and we have 3 resin printers in the lab (small boutique lab).Im somewhat happy about that fact because printing was my hobby long before it became a thing in the dental industry....so im kind of swimming in my own waters... Only concern is that we used plaster before and it was cheaper and a lot more eco friendly
I think the sv08 mini is gonna really shake up the high speed mini printer sector, especially if they can get it even close to as polished as the a1 mini
How about online 3D printing services? Speaking of industrial machines, industrial quality has also become accessible for hobbyists and freelancers through these services. I tried a few and I was very impressed. I tested sintered plastic and resin technologies, and I'm excited to try metal next. (Even FDM could make sense in certain situations.) These services are still pricey, but could well worth it for a final prototype, a one-off or low volume product, they are virtually indistinguishable from injection moulded parts. So this could still very well be, I think, an area for you to follow. You could even pick up a few sponsorships, too. The more it spreads, the cheaper it gets, and the available technologies are already amazing. Looking forward to seeing you in 2025, too, Cheers.
I've noticed a lot more requests for "can you 3D print this?" in the last year. Have uploaded a few designs to thingyverse over the last 7 years, never made a cent. There is also at least one case of someone selling 3D prints of one of my designs on eBay, but since it's so niche and low volume I don't care, in fact I see it more as a service than I can't be bothered to supply 😂
I think the price cap for reviews is an interesting idea and I see where you coming from. Personally, I like seeing prosumer machines even if I wouldn't buy one. For instance, if we get a Bambu XL next year for $2001, I wouldn't buy one, but I'd still want to watch a review of it. Of course, there'll be no shortage of other channels covering them.
I've had a basic filament printer for a while, and a resin printer for eighteen months - hardly used them. Until just now when I've got some actual momentum for designing parts in FreeCAD for my partner's hobby
I'm glad that you predict the hobby becoming more about printing and less about tinkering to get that perfect print. In 2017, I bout a Monoprice Maker Select 3D Printer v2" because I heard it was excellent. Perhaps it is but I gave up using it several months after buying it because it was simply too finicky. I sold it to a local Maker Space. To much of my time was required to tinker with the thing. The ROI was terrible. Easier to use printers seem more attractive.

I hope we’ll see brands other than Prusa releasing toolchanger printers. Especially if they have a variety of different tools available. Mainly high-flow, high-temp, and TPE-capable extruders, but also lasers and other non-printing tools.
As far as the open/close source issue goes (issue #1), it's not that I want to tinker with my printer (I too want one which "just works"), it's that 1) I'd like to be able to mod mine in the future, should I desire to do so, and 2) this hobby was built on Open Source, and for a company to build a product built on the openness of the community, and then not contribute back is not right.
Excited to hear that puzzles, mechanisms, and combat robotics will fill the airtime vacated by reviews! But I do hope you leave some time to review CAD software.
I thought I saw recently where Bambu wasn't allowing ai generated models and lower quality into the catalog there to prevent what you're talking about. I see some benefits of the model generating as a tool the recent update is insane on the maker lab image to model one. But definitely agree on a lot of points particular where was that cute creature one image trained from and are people not being credited there. The generated models are getting really good but I don't think would take anyone's jobs yet could be used by them as a tool as well to get initial forms etc. be efficient. For my own personal practice I am enjoying using it and experimenting with translating hand sculpted pieces I've made to digital rapidly but also to see what abstractions the program creates as well. I was also recently able to take friends illustration and translate it to an accurate printed Dnd style mini for them in literally an hour start to finish which previously would have taken me an entire day.

A breakthrough in the resin space is definitely needed in 2025. Hopefully non-toxic resins will become more common and affordable.
The only thing stopping me from using resin printers is the toxic part, probably many others too
The challenge is the toxic part is what makes it work. 3d musketeers had a podcast with a bespoke resin manufacturer.

freecad 1.0 is nice but its missing the small QoL things like polar array can't be changed via formulas
I've might look at solidworks which is only 50€ per year for private use, instead of 600€ like Fusion
I don’t run into things I can’t do in FreeCAD any more, and I find it more responsive than SolidWORKs. I haven’t used Fusion 360 in years because I dislike Autodesk and don’t want my designs tethered to their platform. It still crashes occasionally, but learning to use it is like learning to use any CAD software, it does basically the same things, but the names and buttons are all different. Driving designs off spreadsheets and making parametric parts that can be reused is doable, but not intuitive. I’d say it’s certainly usable but there’s a lot more friction for some of the more complex things
I've been a follower for less than a year, but I wanted to tell you that you and your channel are one of two that I recommend to other friends, just starting in 3D Printing. Like you, I am more interested in practical prints or prints that allow me to learn something new or prints that enhance what I am already interested in (say hi to your sister!).

Bought a new 3D printer this last year because frankly the new printers have so many features that it isn't a fight to use the machine anymore. Almost all of the printing I do is either little toys or household items.
Being able to make custom sized bins, mounting hardware and the like is a huge deal and it all costs a few bucks to make. It's a no brainer

OnShape is still predominantly running on your local hardware; it's only really cloud computing in the file sharing sense. It *is* possible that it offloads some expensive algorithmic stuff to the cloud, I don't know, but the UI and 3D graphics will all be done locally.
Surely they're doing most of the heavy lifting, this chromebook is the definition of gutless. The graphics are definitely impressive.
@@MakersMuse I mean I haven't looked that closely, I wouldn't necessarily rule anything out, but it's pretty unlikely. Cloud rendering can be achieved by delivering it to the client via video stream, but you would likely notice encoding artefacts and interaction latency in this case. It's much more likely it's rendered locally; even low end GPU chipsets are surprisingly capable these days, and from a graphics hardware point of view, CAD isn't really that demanding.
(For what it's worth I'm a professional software engineer, and I have deployed 3D graphics web apps. I tried linking but TH-cam is extra fastidious about filtering links.)

I noticed huge performance differences when running OnShape on my laptops integrated GPU vs the discrete GPU, if that means anything. Also whilst using OnShape my browser uses a similar amount of RAM as AutoDesk Inventor.
What the fk does "predominantly" even mean in this context? If a single instruction in the code needs a server to work and you are cut off from the server, congratulations your expensive pay to not own and be owned by being spied on and advertised to program is now a brick and you're regretting not using open source or a completely localised cracked pirate version of expensive software like Fusion.
@@MakersMuseOutside of renders, most CAD models are just meshes with no shaders or textures attached, which even mobile GPUs are now more than capable of handling. The main resource hog graphics-wise would likely be tessellating the solid geometry to triangles for the GPU, which would scale with model complexity. I think the reason a lot of other CAD packages feel slow even on powerful hardware are due to their age, and a lack of attention to their rendering pipelines. The graphical requirements of CAD haven’t really changed much over time, and full scale product renders for marketing are normally done in a separate mode or application, meaning that new CAD software can substantially improve over older packages by writing their own rendering stacks that make effective use of modern hardware, and are actually optimised. This I feel is especially the case given that most commercial CAD packages like SolidWORKs or Siemens NX are expected to be run on workstations with NVIDIA Quadro’s or similar. SolidWORKs doesn’t even recognise non-Quadro nvidia GPUs and disables features unless you use a registry hack, so it’s likely there’s very little interest in optimising those rendering stacks to operate well outside of the narrow range of hardware most of their big clients are running.
It’s easy to underestimate just how much compute power even a low-end mobile phone has nowadays, and given the graphical standards for CAD products haven’t really shifted since the 2000s, it’d be surprising if it couldn’t handle it decently well. I expect you’d run into more performance issues with complex operations, since that’s where most of the heavy compute work in CAD is done

You are completly right about 3D printing in niche hobbies. I'm a kitebuilder and watch more and more fellow kite builders using 3D printer to print connectors for their kites. Yes, there are now kites which wouldn't be possible without 3D printing.

Hi Angus, I have watched your videos for a few years now. Very very helpful. I had a few months back been asked by a close family member for my recommendation for a 3d printed to purchase. After asking a few questions on what their needs are, i recommended the p1s.
I had to call them back today to change my recommendation to an mk4s since the terms of use have changed. A video came up in my feed of bambu's new terms being explained. Hope you make a quick short to get the message out to the bambu community so they might reach out to bambu to change their policy terms
I still love building them from scratch! I have some proprietary (Bambu/creality), but my favorite machine is my 450x450x585 home built printer. It’s fast accurate and quiete and I can continue to mod it any way I want! Next goal is to add a quick change tool head and put a cnc and laser tool head on it. Great video!
I still use my og Ender 3 to this day and is so easy and fun to fix or modify.

I love combat robotics and I think that with recent printers such as the a1 mini printing durable materials for a cheap price and more user friendly cad softwares, the skill barriers that prevented people from have lessened allowing the community to grow. Can’t wait to see your next robot combat video!🎉
As someone who has had to deal with 3D printing models for customers, the sheer increase in models that have to have their mesh and geometry manually adjusted to be properly air-tight for 3D printing is so unbelievably painful. It's so easy to tell they've just gotten an AI to generate a model put no thought into the design or had any input on what it actually looks like, pretty sad.
I might have gotten lucky with mine, but I was a little saddened to see the Tevo Tarantula footage when you spoke about bad printers. It was my first printer, helped me learn a lot, was my workhorse for the longest time and, baring some external circumstances, would still work well if I had the time to finish the upgrade.
I know that's not the point of the video, and that my affection is irrational. Still thought I'd speak up about a really old printer no one really cares about anymore ;)

Instead a products being stored in a warehouse and shipped from across the world; a local shop can print orders as needed.

Happy New Year Angus! Hoping 2025 is good to all and the 3d Printing community. I think we will see some interesting new feature introduced to the FDM market, I just hope that they continue to listen to the customer and take some extra time on QC and practical feature sets. I would also love to see more customization options for the top few models each company is making, make them so they can be upgraded easily and keep all spare parts readily available for the long term. I prefer to pay a few dollars extra for premium components especially any drive train components. I do believe the model that Prussa has maintained is a great one, make these machines upgradeable and always keep the parts available for easy resplacement and upgradeability.
My kids and I are definitely looking forward to more from you (especially puzzles). You were critical in my getting a grasp on the hobby early on, as well as my sons' interest in it. Keep on rockin'!

One thought on the machine review price cap -- If you do see some new, interesting feature on a higher priced printer, it may still be worth talking about just the feature rather than a doing a review. Frequently these types of features will end up trickling down into the more mainstream devices, so in my opinion it's nice to learn about things that we may see in consumer devices in the future as well.
The slicer software is going to become subscription based. That’s why all the 3d printer manufacturers keep releasing their own version of the same software. Right now is the golden age of 3d printing, enjoy it while it lasts.
The 3d printers working well enough to focus on what is printed is a game changer. I got an A1 mini for miniature wargame prints but also did some functional prints. Learn some CAD and designed a few custom parts as well. I didn't bother with printers before because it seemed like calibrating them was a hobby by itself. I can see why tinkering with them is interesting but it wasn't something I wanted to add to my pile of hobbies. These newer printers are good tools and I generally don't have to tinker.

9:16 When I first started getting into 3D printing about 2 years ago, my girlfriend didn't really care about it. After a few useful household items, she is hooked. Anything she thinks she needs in the house she will just say "3D print it". Some of my less tech savvy friends also started requesting prints they see on Instagram or youtube. Its cool to see a hobby that you got into for the love of tinkering turn into a space for people to improve their daily lives with useful prints.

We fished ours out recently too! netflix removed so many good movies it became a chore to even "find" something to watch...
That's not minimalism, that's nostalgia, like we used to collect vinyls EP when the fashion of CD came during the 90s. Minimalism means to own less objects

Newer movies still come out on DVD and BR, but yes you can go nostalgic and buy a good old movie for a dollar (especially since people were dumping them at antique stores since 2010) instead of renting it on Amazon for $8-15, plus you can snag a DVD player for $15 new. Get director's commentary, extra scenes, AND Easter egg menus on top of it.
You can also rip with Handbrake and drop the mp4 into a Jellyfin server if you really need to stream it.
Internet goes down? I can stream it locally or pull a movie from my pile of DVDs. No restrictions. Can't cancel your account to your DVDs.
However there's definitely a "false" nostalgia out there too..m kids that are far too young to know about it are collecting Laserdisc and VHS movies.

You opened up a lot of good questions. I am particularly concerned about what will happen to Mesh Mixer. There are all kinds of CAD options but none that take the approach of good old Mesh Mixer. I am really sorry it is dying out when it really should be expanding. I still use MM a lot and I guess there are other ways to do those things but It was a great tool. 'Glad you continue to recognize the community out here.

I never thought 3D printers could be used for household items until my friend showed me how she prints custom parts for her kitchen. If this becomes mainstream, we might all be printing our own DIY solutions at home! 🏠💡
i'm hoping for some smaller corexy printers, also its going to be interesting to see what bambu labs has up their sleeve, i hope its not just a giant x1 carbon.. they seem pretty focused on the software side though so i hop the smaller models get updated or at least refreshed
If you’re doing more on RC stuff I’d love to see some coverage of the very basics of how to approach that from an electronics POV (how to control motors, how to do RC, etc) or even recommendations as to learning resources for that elsewhere.

Watch out on your early days of 3D printing with it, don't get too carried away printing lots of trinkets & fidget toys, unless that's what you bought it for :)
@@licensetodrive9930 I bought it purely for useful things that I've been 3d modeling, like car parts and bushings, and things for my work.
Make sure you keep the bed clean. Even oils in your skin can affect adhesion, and you won't necessarily see it. One of the top things I see when people ask for help online is when stuff no longer sticks to the bed.
A drop of isopropyl alcohol on tissue is good for cleaning the bed, and if you find TPU prints stick too hard, a drop if isopropyl on the edge of the print will help loosen it from the bed.
It's not. bambu has a 1.4 consumer rating for a reason. When your A1 breaks down, like all bambu lab 3d printers, bambu lab will ignore your support tickets.
About AI training data: I’ve been selling 3D models through a large “professional-level” service for over a decade. Recently, I noticed a substantial sale that actually exceeded the combined value of all my models. “Hmm… that’s odd,” I thought. The same day, I received an email from the service explaining the large sale amount. Apparently, they were now offering large portions of their modeling catalog to corporations to be used as training data.
To their credit, they had established guardrails to ensure the models wouldn’t be resold “as is.” Additionally, if you didn’t want your models to be used as training data, you could opt out of the program. The frustrating part, however, was that the program’s announcement and launch were never directly communicated to artists (e.g., via email). It was only announced on their website. Since the only part of the site I regularly use is for uploading my work and checking on sales, I completely missed the announcement. They also didn't quantify exactly what a "corporation" is (e.g. size, products, etc.). lol
The sad thing about digital minimalism is, that the very same people who looked down on you for not having an iPhone, will now look down on you for having an iPhone.
I think new materials and higher temp printing, at a consumer level, are in the pipeline this year. The QIDI4 Plus with it's ability to print pps -cf is a game changer. Plus Polymaker's Fiberon line, which includes pps-cf just came out. This big filament company will be pressuring 3D printing companies to make their printers work for this material. I see an arms race on the horizon... by the end of the year we might have a QIDI 5 printing PEKK.
I have wanted a 3D printer for many years now, and just finally bought one for myself for Christmas.
I will be joining the 3D printing space this year. Prusa Core One will be where I start.
Let me tell you something you probably didn't know....Dentistry is digitalizing a lot the past 1-2 years.The clinics are getting intraoral scanners and the dental technicians are printing models for the teeth. Temporarily crowns and castable items are made using 3d printers. Im a dental technician and we have 3 resin printers in the lab (small boutique lab).Im somewhat happy about that fact because printing was my hobby long before it became a thing in the dental industry....so im kind of swimming in my own waters...
Only concern is that we used plaster before and it was cheaper and a lot more eco friendly
I think the sv08 mini is gonna really shake up the high speed mini printer sector, especially if they can get it even close to as polished as the a1 mini
How about online 3D printing services?
Speaking of industrial machines, industrial quality has also become accessible for hobbyists and freelancers through these services. I tried a few and I was very impressed. I tested sintered plastic and resin technologies, and I'm excited to try metal next. (Even FDM could make sense in certain situations.)
These services are still pricey, but could well worth it for a final prototype, a one-off or low volume product, they are virtually indistinguishable from injection moulded parts.
So this could still very well be, I think, an area for you to follow. You could even pick up a few sponsorships, too. The more it spreads, the cheaper it gets, and the available technologies are already amazing.

I've noticed a lot more requests for "can you 3D print this?" in the last year. Have uploaded a few designs to thingyverse over the last 7 years, never made a cent. There is also at least one case of someone selling 3D prints of one of my designs on eBay, but since it's so niche and low volume I don't care, in fact I see it more as a service than I can't be bothered to supply 😂
I think the price cap for reviews is an interesting idea and I see where you coming from. Personally, I like seeing prosumer machines even if I wouldn't buy one. For instance, if we get a Bambu XL next year for $2001, I wouldn't buy one, but I'd still want to watch a review of it. Of course, there'll be no shortage of other channels covering them.
I've had a basic filament printer for a while, and a resin printer for eighteen months - hardly used them. Until just now when I've got some actual momentum for designing parts in FreeCAD for my partner's hobby

I'm glad that you predict the hobby becoming more about printing and less about tinkering to get that perfect print. In 2017, I bout a Monoprice Maker Select 3D Printer v2" because I heard it was excellent. Perhaps it is but I gave up using it several months after buying it because it was simply too finicky. I sold it to a local Maker Space. To much of my time was required to tinker with the thing. The ROI was terrible. Easier to use printers seem more attractive.

I think that multicolor printing will either die down a bit and mainly be used as a multilateral system for mechanical properties.
I hope we’ll see brands other than Prusa releasing toolchanger printers. Especially if they have a variety of different tools available. Mainly high-flow, high-temp, and TPE-capable extruders, but also lasers and other non-printing tools.

As far as the open/close source issue goes (issue #1), it's not that I want to tinker with my printer (I too want one which "just works"), it's that 1) I'd like to be able to mod mine in the future, should I desire to do so, and 2) this hobby was built on Open Source, and for a company to build a product built on the openness of the community, and then not contribute back is not right.
Excited to hear that puzzles, mechanisms, and combat robotics will fill the airtime vacated by reviews! But I do hope you leave some time to review CAD software.

I thought I saw recently where Bambu wasn't allowing ai generated models and lower quality into the catalog there to prevent what you're talking about. I see some benefits of the model generating as a tool the recent update is insane on the maker lab image to model one. But definitely agree on a lot of points particular where was that cute creature one image trained from and are people not being credited there. The generated models are getting really good but I don't think would take anyone's jobs yet could be used by them as a tool as well to get initial forms etc. be efficient. For my own personal practice I am enjoying using it and experimenting with translating hand sculpted pieces I've made to digital rapidly but also to see what abstractions the program creates as well. I was also recently able to take friends illustration and translate it to an accurate printed Dnd style mini for them in literally an hour start to finish which previously would have taken me an entire day.
