    For one button video recording - setup Custom 3 (C3) in video mode. Now anytime you hit the red record button the C3 settings will come up in video mode with just one button instead of hitting Mode - Info - video mode.

    Probably the most solid review of the EOS R. We just got it as well - interested in that 35mm

      @CalebWojcik  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That 35mm is great. It is SO lightweight, can shoot macros, and is stabilized. I want more RF lenses like that one.

    Thank you for this! I just ordered my EOS R and you know, I always get some remorse after purchasing really expensive stuff. I need to find reaffirmation sometimes, this video helped me with that. So, thanks for your honest review. I find it really useful, especially 'cause I'm a Canon fanboy and I now I know I have taken a decision buying it.

    Thank you so much for sharing this important info so clearly without any wasting time. I watched several review/tutorial videos to get INFORMATION of EOS R. However, I’ve just wasted time to watch non-informative fake Peter M’s until I found yours! I love your way and you definitely have your own style. I haven’t watched your other videos yet but I can tell you are a great and creative artist. You’re awesome! Keep them up!

    When in photo mode, press the record button; the EOS R should automatically switch to video mode using the last settings you used for video.

    Gordon Laing recommended the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 which is terrific for when filming in 2160p30 or 1080p60. I was set on getting the 10-18 EF-S lens. However, when putting an EF-S lens on the EOS R, it doesn't allow 1080p60 recording. It drops down to 30 fps. So the only reason for using the 10-18 lens would be for 2160p30. The Sigma allows you to still record 60fps because the Sigma is using the EF mount even though it is an APS-C lens.

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the sigma is a better quality lens overall and opens up more options. But is more than twice expensive and much heavier. Up to you!

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aha, so if you mount a Canon EF-S lens the camera automatically jumps to APS-C mode and disables 60fps. If you mount a Sigma APS-C lens, you can switch the camera to APS-C mode, and in that case 60fps is not disabled. Is this the case? So this would be a workaround of the no-60-fps-in-APS-C limitation.

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@miklosnemeth8566 I'm still figuring out if I want to get the 10-18 because I don't really do much video. But it is a very lightweight lens.

    I’ve found that companies like Sony value innovation at the cost of reliability, whereas Canon values reliability at the cost of innovation. Neither is better, they’re just different. Sony offers the newest and greatest, but sometimes takes a few iterations to really get it right. Canon is usually slower to the market, but you can trust what they deliver.
    I have the 6D II, which is my favorite camera of all time (I also get to use/test many other Canon models through my job). Like the EOS R, the 6D was trashed when it came out, then people came around and saw how great it really is.

  • @AdamKuzniar
    @AdamKuzniar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The issue with eos r isn't what it is it's what it could be. It's the artificial limitation put on it by Canon. Buying this is saying yes to this practice

    • @africanhistory
      @africanhistory 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I have been with Canon for 20 years, and think this practice is very dangerous . This area of tech is too competitive for them to trust lens loyalty and fan boys. I really had to think about the 5D mk 4, really put of my codec, crop was not an issue only annoying because if Nikon can, why not Canon?

    • @miklosnemeth8566
      @miklosnemeth8566 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, if you go after the technology, Canon didn't hold back anything, they simply don't have the technology, at least not at this price level and size. The only down-concerting 4K FF camera Canon has is the $33000 C700 FF, they have no IBIS, and a number of other limitations. I think EOS R is an excellent Canon camera; I wouldn't expect anything better from Canon as for video features any soon; no it won't happen.

  • @FourPeaksFilms
    @FourPeaksFilms 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So I film everything on a canon c100 mark II like you. I have switched back to Canon after a couple years on Sony and Panasonic. I need a third camera. I was going to buy the cheaper 80D, but was looking at this because of the Clog included. After watching the review, I am leaning towards just buying the 80D. Would you agree the 80D is probably a much better buy for what you get still? Or can you match up the EOS R to the C100 better given the native Clog? I am not worried about 4k right now as 99% of my clients only want 1080 and 720p.

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can afford it, the EOS R matches WAY better with a c100 II. The image on an 80D is super soft in my opinion. And having Canon Log is worth it. (Though you can get that with a 5D IV also.)

    You're the only one I've seen that really talks about the new 35mm lens. Everybody else seems to brush it off since it's the only new lens that isn't L series. I think that one and the new 24-105 would be a good combo for run and gun filming.
    I think the next iteration they come out with might be a higher megapixel camera that will be great for photo, but not that great for video though.

  • @SarahnTuned
    @SarahnTuned 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The 720p 120fps and 1080 60fps aren’t available with the EF/EF-S lens adapter; I invested into the EOS R a year ago for my primary TH-cam camera before knowing this. The RF glass is so incredibly expensive it makes the camera a horrible option for TH-camrs, I hate to say it, but I regret buying the R.

    Great video Caleb! Hey, so I'm thinking of getting a new dslr for youtube videos where I'm in a fixed studio (so not much vlogging) and a little panning around within but also for pictures for instagram. What camera/lens do you recommend? Or should I just go with the iPhone XS since it's simple and does great pictures and video now? Also, one last question. Since I'll be 5-10ft away from the camera what audio do you recommend that's clean for youtube kind of videos? Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing more vids man!

    About the video switching, you can actually use video record button to record video immediatelly, with C3 settings, so it's actually better than any Canon DSLR where your settings stay fixed between photo and video. Also, lens control ring is a gamechanger, you can put ISO there, and then use trackpad for let's say changing Kelvin value, I don't see a faster way to change your settings, on any camera, including C200.

    • @paullucas898
      @paullucas898 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CalebWojcik A solid stills option would be helpful, and with the ND filter adaptor and a sound recorder, I was leaning toward an EOS R. It's for a small education provider to produce some eLearning videos and short promo clips.

    • @CalebWojcik
      @CalebWojcik  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say the 1080p is comparable or slightly better than the C100 II. It being full framed vs. cropped is the biggest difference. Rolling shutter on the EOS R is worse than the C100 II.

    • @miklosnemeth8566

      Exactly, only Canon fans buy this camera. Just kidding, I'm aware of the limitations of this camera, I used to own a Sony A9, the best camera ever, still I am thinking of buying an EOS R because some special features, that are only available on Canon cameras. For example, when I used my Canon TS-E 17mm/f4L on my A9 bot architectural photography and videos, the image was brilliant, but I wasn't very happy with the corners when the lens was shifted. So, I think I'll give a try if the TS-E 17 corners are better on the EOS R, since Canon (just like any camera manufacturers) implements in-camera corrections for its lenses. Maybe this is just a myth, and it may turn out that the TS-E 17/4 corners shifted are not any better on EOS R either. What I really don't like is that I cannot record 10-bit HD video via HDMI on an Atomos, only 8-bit; 10-bit HDMI is only 4K with the hilarious 1.8x crop.

  • @jjr334
    @jjr334 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it´s a great camera for the price. You only have to know how to use it. It´s true that is not the best in low light so you have to put a fixed lens like a 24mm 1.4 to raise the iso, use C-Log. It´s true that it doesn´t have ibis but if you know how to use the digital is you will get the same results or even better

    Hey Caleb, quick question. I have C100MK2 which I love and I’m considering EOS R as maybe a B cam. Since you have both cameras, would you shoot 4K and downscale to 1080P to use the footage with C100MK2, or just shoot in 1080P? Basically I’m curious if EOS R’s 1080P is as good as C100MK2 and if not, would you say its 4K match better? Any thoughts?Thanks!!

I get headphone out correct? does the LCD stays active when you plug in a LCD monitor? Similar to what happens with the C100 mk2? No issues with using EF-S lenses with the adapter? all recording options remain? I read somewhere than some options would be grey out when using EF-S lenses...or maybe this is only for the RP and a firmware update fixed that...

    Would you recommend the R for a current 5d3 user ? I start to found it very limiting in video since I'm alone on my productions, and the image quality as I'm not filming in ML Raw is quite dated...

    Canon designs cameras according to their marketing strategy.
    Seems like for this one the primary objective was to slow down market share bleeding for people who want to upgrade to mirror less, but don't make it good enough for 5Diii+ owners.
    For pros Canon will release another camera that will be 1K more expensive.
    Think about it.
    What kind of mentality goes into keeping their production in Japan.

    I think you miss the point of what's the real disappointment of this camera. It's not how 'bad' this camera is, it's how good what other manufacturers are putting out. I've been lifelong Canon user and we waited for years for a great Canon camera since the 5Dii but all we get are okay-good cameras. And unless we stop making apologies for Canon, I fear they have little incentive to innovate. They know there are users who will patiently do as you ask and "wait 12 - 18 months". And they will probably put another okay camera that will do everything okay but nothing great. Meanwhile Sony, Panasonic and Fuji are pushing the envelope and developing great cameras because they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by innovating. Even Nikon have gotten on board once they realised that they're losing customers.
    As much as I like your work and can't wait for the switchpod to go into mass production, I have to say this video was an underwhelming review full of apologies for an even more underwhelming product.

      All very good points. 2019 and 2020 will be big years for Canon, and not just for the R system; (5R & 1R are coming...). The only problem is, like you mentioned, Sony will also have a big year in 2019 (& in 2020), with 6k & 8k cameras, and Panasonic will be doing the same. It is unfortunate that Canon has been so slow to change.

    • @TyroneLT

      I agree with all of this. The more i read and watch videos about this camera, the more headaches it gives. For example using any of those EF-S lenses turns off 60fps mode. And that 720p 120fps mode turns dual pixel auto focus off as well.
      Or if you're a hybrid shooter that does photo and video. Imagine shooting 4k with the heavy crop and then having to switch to photo mode and realize the lens you're using is the wrong focal and then having to switch. To me it's just too many headaches when there's so many other options out there. And a year from now there will probably be more.

    It might be ok for videographer or vlogger, but not great for filmmaker compare to other camera on the market like the BMPCC4k. There is a lot of consideration into selecting a camera... I didn't care about Photo since I'll keep my Canon 5D2 for that. I was interested in a Super35 camera, so maybe a Canon C series or Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro... But they were expensive for the level of filmmaking I'll be doing... There was the original BMPCC that could have been an option, but I found the sensor way too crop, and not so great low light, bad audio input, can't feed timecode while capturing audio, bad battery life and expensive capture card. It still a good camera but I wanted something a bit more and damn the BMPCC4k really deliver for it price point !!! It really an amazing camera for filmmaker... I got a rig up with a SpeedBooster 0.71x giving me Super35 sensor field of view (even a bit wider), I can use my canon lens with and without the speedbooster for a dual focal length, it provide ProRes and Raw (And upcoming Blackmagic RAW which from the URSA review look amazing). You got a powered XLR Audio input which, internal micro that are not that bad, you still got your 3.5mm input which you can use for timecode input from a Tentacle generator, you got locked power which support 12v to 18v so Vlock battery will work and they sell the cable for it (I wish it did go down to 6.5volt so I could use an external 7.4volt battery via that port, but I use a dummy battery for that), no voltage readout on the side DC input AND no way to disable the internal charging of the battery). You have no internal ND filter... That about the only big issue with that camera ;) Flip screen ? I don't care much (though it would have been nice for personal 1 person project), but with a DOP, I got a wireless HDMI transmitter with cheap battery powered monitor, so for 500$ I have wireless display with the camera. I wish it was not as wide, mostly because you require to offset the plate on gimbal which mean when switching to a tripod, you got to swap the plate position if you intend to pan or use a rail system. But what does the EOS-R give us for filmmaker ??? A worst crop factor than the original BMPCC at x1.8 crop with speedbooster ! The native crop factor of the BMPCC4k is 1.9x versus EOS-R 1.8x, very small difference. Only way to get 10bit with EOS-R is via HDMI recording, and apparently it might not be super clean and might have some processing in the output so it crap. So it a pretty horrible camera as is for filmmaker ! Now if you were given one, could you do something great... Sure ! But I think it a bad decision to get that camera compare to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k ! BUT do get yourself good battery and an external power solution for the pocket 4k. And Samsung T5 USB-C drive work really great and are cheap compare to CFast card !

And I specifically said filmmaker ! My view change slightly for vlogger and videographer, which might also be more in need of a hybrid shooter. When doing filming, you don't normally use your motion camera to take photo on set ;) My hybrid shooter now is my cell phone !

    Usability is terrible on this camera, no where near the 5d/1dx. People say: it's a perfect b camera to c200! They disabled 10-bit 1080p in this camera via hdmi, you could only use the massive 4k crop with insane amounts of rolling shutter. I had it for a few weeks and thought I would just use it as a photo camera, nope. I couldn't even push it past 1 stop before I saw nasty banding. This camera is worth $1500 with adapter imo.

  • @soulchildpaul

    You should be ashamed of yourself. Yes the camera is not “BAD” as nearly all cameras releases these days are not “bad”. The fact that canon priced it so high while deliberately withholding expected features as they have a history of doing is down right criminal to the loyal Canon faithful.
    Saying your excited about the future” and “the future progression” clearly means that this is substandard and encouraging others to holdout for what may come in the future is what Canon faithful have been doing since the 5Dii and Canon continually deliberately disappoint in the hope you’ll move to their more expensive cinema line of products.
    I find it funny how the same TH-camrs that praised the 6dii and made excuses for it when everyone could clearly see it fell short by a large margin, are the very same ones that are trying to do damage limitation on the R.
    I’m nobody to be telling who what to spend their money on so if someone want the R over another product it’s their choice, I just hate to see people being misguided. These products are not cheap. Yes you may not need the bells and whistles of other products but why encourage people to pay more for less. If the R had been priced £1500/$1500 I don’t think anyone would have complained.
    Canon don’t let greed and arrogance be your downfall.

      For me it comes down to the cost of switching. I love what Sony is doing but I have a history with them screwing me over with PS4 and PS2 issues that they claimed was my fault when they failed and they have poor customer service. Plus the amount of Canon glass I have is not worth selling and moving to a system that to get the same glass would cost me even more. Don't get me wrong I could use the MC-11 but I would lose out on some things as opposed to using native Sony glass. I have the EOS-R and it takes great photos but I agree that this company needs to start innovating as they are falling behind. Do I think the EOS-R is garbage as some say no not at all. What makes it suck is the fact that Canon is not putting the same tech into their cameras as the competitors but again I am not a working pro so for me to sell everything I own and move systems would literally cost me a fortune. So it is what it is in my case and many others as well. Back in the day I used to shoot Nikon and people would bash them and I decided back then to move to Canon and now the rolls are reversed. It is hard to constantly move from system to system and I won't do it again. End rant.
