Too much pipe dope was applied to the threads of the drain plugs. When the drain plugs were being tightened the pipe dope was forced out of the threads and into the groove machined into the oil pan where the o-rings are supposed to sit. This caused the o-rings to not seat properly and protrude out of the groove and were damaged while being tightened.
I don't even go 14 ft lbs on the drain plugs. Probably 12 is enough. There's a few videos on oil pans getting hairline cracks in them especially the oil drain pan as the drain plug is extremely close to the narrowest part of the oil pan. I agree with you on re using the derby cover gasket. I have yet to replace mine on my 2017 FLHTK.
Great video especially for the new riders. I am glad you brought up concerning the tightening of the calibers. On my buddies bike the other day I noticed his front caliber was lose so important to check.
You would not believe how many people NEVER change the coolant in their cars. I am sure most don't in the bike either. Coolant will break down and cause gasket erosion especially cylinder heads. Toyota which I own, Highlander and Tundra says every 50,000 miles change with OEM fluid. At least HD tells you to change it at the correct time.
I agree with you. It’s one of the most neglected items on any motor vehicle. It can cause some serious damage. Look at all the trouble Ford had with the 6 L back of the days. That was all because of the coolant.
Hey Adam, thanks for sharing this. As far as drain plugs, my method is always change out the O-ring and never use thread sealant on the modern full size drain plugs - the plugs on my '88 Softail are a different animal and need thread sealant (either tape or liquid.)
I did my “1000” mile service at 810 miles. I had a trip planned and would run over. Figured it was better to do it a little early than late. It was an easy service.
@amsoiladam I was hoping for your opinion. I don’t ride 15K a year so I am usually faced with calendar maintenance. My HD dealer said don’t worry about the 2 yr spark plug replacement but I am thinking the engine engineers at Harley Davidson came up with that replacement schedule for a reason. 2 years is really a short life interval for a spark plug so what am I missing here? Everyone usually chimes in to make money but a dealer doesn’t make money on a diy customer. Get videos, love your product. I am using Amsoil because of you and trying the fuel stabilizer this year for the first time. Thanks!
Does a permanent oil filter have more advantages than disadvantages? Do you sell lifetime oil filter's and just charge for cleaning them in a normal 3 fluid oil change?
Yes, I agree with your fluid changing tips! I painted the end of the trans fluid dip stick white so that I could read it ez'er. 🤓
Thank you once again for sharing your many years of experience.
My pleasure!

Has never ever happened.

I agree, and because I use an anti-vibration thread sealant they don’t have to be super tight

Right on
Great walkthrough, Adam.

Great job on the 1000 mile service, hope the weather gets better I know that storm is moving fast.

I always use thread sealant, because O-rings can fail, even after torqued. It’s just a second level of protection like a back up.
Great video Adam thanks for sharing your 1000 mile service on Dr evil.
Hope family at home is good, sounds like u guys got lots of bad weather
Good informative video. Wish you would have shown how you lubricate your clutch cable.
I just sprayed some of the Amsoil MP at the top and let it work its way down
Every bike I have owned I bought the service manual. The trike takes TWO books. Wait until you see the price on those pages.
Well done, clearly explained and shown. Hope all is good at home!
Thank you, sir
thanks for the video, where did you get the decals?
If you are referring to the number one on the fuel tank, they’re not decals they were handpainted by a pinstripe artist
Hope you got through the storm ok !
Another nice one thank you...👍
Thank you too!
Good morning ☀️

It was an easy service.
You were absolutely correct. That is a fine time to do it.
Brilliant video I have 10w 40 and my bike uses 15w 40 it’s an air cooled royal Enfield brand new can I use the 10 40 in as it’s Amsoil thanks 👍👍👍
Yes, absolutely
Good video thanks brother
You bet
Good video informative 👍👍
Thanks 👍
great video thanks man
No problem 👍
Will you be at the Lone Star rally this year?
Yes, we will be
What is the thinking of Harley-Davidson to replace the spark plugs at two years for those of us who are low mileage and no where near 30K?

How is the family doing at home? Western NC has been hammered. Hopefully everyone is safe.
Our area was good
Just concerned about you and your family hope you all are well and safe.
Yes we are
WELL I HOPE YOU GUYS ARE OK 👋🦋 Your home
Hey, have you checked out that wire that caused this latest recall???
Yes
When do you recommend changing the brake fluid?
Every two years or when the moisture content gets too high
Do you guys apply pipe dope on all makes?
Pretty much yes there are very few exceptions
@@amsoiladam I got a kaw klr 650 should I be doping it
How’s your place in NC? You get flooded?
No, not at all
Contact Scott at Rickrak we have metal trans dip sticks
Please get a digital torque wrench, much more accurate
Is your family safe?
Yes
Why couldn’t you just do it at 999 miles
Because then I wouldn’t have been able to do all those circles and make myself dizzy

I do not sell the washable oil filters because they don’t filter very well. And the number one job of the filter is to filter. Go figure.
You must dye your pinky a different color when you ride Dr. Evil.
lol!
