@chrisreynolds3351 Thankfully, we're not a part of the European Union and have no need of their courts to determine democracy in Britain. A simple peoples referendum can deliver proportional representation for the people.
@chrisreynolds3351 I personally believe that we have the ability to change the political system ourselves without outside influences. The problem with your solution is that as a sovereign nation, we are not obliged to accept the ruling of foreign courts. They are not enforceable and can be overruled by our own Parliament, Courts and People. How do you suppose they will enforce their ruling over a sovereign nation that refuses to accept their judgment.
@chrisreynolds3351 the UK government and even EU members ignore the ECHR when it sees fit. Please stop pretending it's some almighty power that is followed by every member at all times, it isn't. It's like the ICC, it's followed when they agree and ignored when they don't.
SNP 730k votes 9 seats… Greens 2m votes 4 seats, Reform UK 4m votes 5 seats… This isn’t fair! If we made a change it could mean better representation, and force greater discussion and cross party collaboration in Parliament. Which can only be good!
Well said. Time for our Parliament to act like adults and not like the grinning idiots we now have for a government. The system of government for years has adopted the policy of do as I say. The present system prevents the people from having a government that does as the PEOPLE say, i.e. the present system prevents representation of the people by a considerable and unacceptable margin.
It can be changed by the people but the Tories and the Labour parties will not listen to the people for obvious reasons we all know the whole country on many areas need urgent reform
The neo liberals at the centre along with military intelligence and the CIA who Starmer colludes with have worked hard to ensure this comes about. BoB (Britain's Own Biden) Starmer is the new Blair. Thanks to MSM in collusion with British Intelligence they have succeeded in pulling the wool (they think) over the eyes of the public and the working class. You haven't. We won't fight your wars or support them with our money. We won't surrender our children to the whims of globalist elites and their puppets. We are awakening to your crimes against humanity.
Well it's not exactly a clear clean result, you can get a huge amount of support and recieve a large amount of votes just like Reform UK and end up with less seats then the Liberal Democrats, why would I want to vote again.....
at least with PR, MPs will have to work for the benefit of the country, not merely the benefit of their party policies. MPs will finally have to work together rather than working against one another.
Some people need to realise this is the UK, not where they came from or any other foreign land. It used to be said "when in Rome, do as the Romans do".
The cons were generally centre right and Labour were centre left which kept politics pretty central overall. However, both parties are now very left so other parties are going to emerge to pull the other way, that just the nature of things and that is why the 2 party system is looking out of date.
Surely a ballot paper asking for your preferential local candidate and also for you party of choice to form the government is the obvious way to get a fair and proportional result?
A referendum on PR has to be held........ but now Labour have power they will not give it a chance........ petitions need to happen for it to happen asap.
They changed from first past the post in New Zealand in the early 1990s, I think. I am not sure of the date as I moved to Australia in 1988 and it changed sometime after that. So change can happen!
Real Reform would include: An end to first-past-the-post Tax all kinds of senior Public Servants for the rest of their lives, so the public can benefit from any personal gains they make off the back of their public service careers Relocate parliament to a more suitable, less class/tradition-ridden building fit for government
I don't see many MPs actually doing anything for the constituencies they are supposed to represent, their focus is on their party and its goals. Maybe voting for, and having a "local" MP is an out-of-date system. Many MPs don't even live in or near the constituency they are elected for, I've seen many lose their seat in one area only to po up in another because they want to be an MP, they don't actually care about which constituency they belong to.
A view from the UK. It seems to work in the EU project. There are 8 parties in their parliament. Many other countries use it. What it seems to do is to knock the more extreme ideas off the agenda and to bring in minority parties ideas into the debate.
Im pleasantly surprised that the BBC are even talking about a better way forward for representing the want of the country. Labour would not have anywhere near the number of seats they got... nor the lib dems. Lets change the way we select our government because this time the result is a mistake

80% of voters did not vote for Labour. Suggesting First Past The Post gives a "clean result" is in itself a biased opinion by a Labour promoting BBC if the result doesn't express the wishes of the voters. In a proportional voting system (that most EU countries use) we would now have a coalition Government because the current Government did not achieve a "Landslide" win and Kier Starmer does not have a "mandate" because we now have minority Government. The only vote this country has had that was truly democratic was the Brexit Referendum.......and that shocked everybody because the outcome was not what the Establishment wanted. First Past The Post is designed to keep one of two parties in power and Labour and the Conservatives are two sides of the same coin with little difference between them, both have moved the country Left to the point that the Centre is now on the Right. Our "Democracy" is such that you can vote for the whole political colour spectrum but the Government can only come from a very narrow range of that spectrum so that the Media and Parliament can tell us how much things are going to change when in reality, for the Establishment there is very little change and it's business as usual. Supressing the change that the majority want is not democratic. If one party can't figure out the happy medium of what the voters want and "deliver" on their words, then we do need to go through the malaise of coalition Governments until a party finds the right formula and the correct people.......however......the people that lose during coalition governments tend to be the Establishment because their power of lobbying is reduced.
The "Clean result" actually works against us and further buttresses the winning party's position. Whereas ...with weak opposition there is no-one to 'hold their feet to the fire' over controversial issues. Plus debates are more diverse and represent more viewpoints and ...sometimes better solutions!
Well at the next General Election all parties outside of the government need to campaign on propositional representation. They need to gather momentum to eventually end up in a referendum.
Better to have the Commons on a FPTP basis where a constituency votes for the person going to represent them rather than someone imposed upon them because he/she is the Party’s leaders friend. Reorganise the Lords to make that an elected Chamber on a PR basis.
The main argument for the current system is that we currently vote for the individual we want to represent us. There have been several times when individuals have been voted out because of their poor personal performance as an MP. What chance is there for independent MPs, which have long been a feature of our systen, in a proportional representation system? Proportional representation also relies on candidate lists, and the process for selecting candidates is not often democratic. What then you have with PR is an entrenchment of the major parties with no independents, and people selected on the basis of how loyal they are to their party. It goes against the very kind of society we want to live in, in which all kinds of characters can thrive and individualism is celebrated.
ANd the fact that the uni-party voting system and those 2 parties has about 40% of the voters not voting. Disenfranchisement with the system is also a useful tool - it keeps teh establishment in when people see that there is no point.

_fptp_ is a good system - the problem is 'political parties'. If we banned political parties and just allowed local people to stand in each constituency, we would end up with a parliament full of representative MPs who would choose a popular prime minister.
MPs are responsible for national policy which affects everybody regardless of where they live, it's not a local issue. Proportional representation is the only way to go and, if people think that no one party with a majority would mean nothing gets done, MPs are going to have to learn to cooperate and compromise. At the moment, 2/3rds of the population are going to be forced to cooperate with important policies they don't agree with and are going to be forced to compromise.
