  • If the goal of this movie was to get people excited for the director's cut, it failed spectacularly.

Snyder has done something remarkable here... He has started making DLCs for movies... Not the actual good type of DLCs that are just extra stories to add to a good honest game... No, I'm talking about the modern laziness plus greed move in which they make the game incomplete to sell the complete one as a DLC, some dark souls 2 shit... Because a complete product are for chumps... Why bother being modest and soliciting the fans for funds to make your new franchise when you can use your arrogant God complex to scam people into forking extra money for the complete version of a movie they already paid for...

Screenwriting used to be a discipline where you wrote a screenplay and then you rewrote it, and then you rewrote it again…
These days you either have 40 different writers each take one swipe at the same screenplay or you have a writing group, which if you’ve ever worked with one, you’ll know exactly why that never works.
If you don’t know why that is, just get 6 people together in a room and ask them all where they want to get lunch from and watch what happens…

I think a better idea would be this: the people that Kora gathers to fight the Motherworld were once part of her elite squad, all of whom went into hiding after it was discovered that they did not complete a mission that went against Kora’s beliefs. Now that she is flushed out of hiding, Kora and Gunner have to recruit and save her old team before Admiral Noble finds them all and wipes them out. It’s not the best idea, but this is something that I think would have worked better.

The extended editions of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy are great, but they benefit from the fact that the theatrical versions are actually good. Ridley Scott's films also tend to get director's cuts, but he actually knows how to tell a focused story and narrative. And his director's cuts sometimes actually fix his films and are, in fact, superior (Kingdom of Heaven and Blade Runner, for example). Zack Snyder need to learn the basics of cinematic storytelling first (or have a writer and producer guide him) before he keeps going all in with releasing director's cuts to nearly every single one of his movies.

Kingdom of Heaven's theatrical cut was utter crap, though; it was the movie, minus all the talky, "boring" parts that actually told a story.
Which is a damn shame, because its Directors Cut is one of my favorite movies ever, and I only gave it a chance because the DVD was on a deep discount at Blockbuster; that's how much I'd hated the original.

@@MyLibertyTV because you can't start a franchise with a film kids can't see, or won't actually sit through. i mean, come on, that's just basic marketing
The person being an idiot here is Snyder, who doesn't understand that an rated -r star wars knockoff is NOT going to turn into the next Star Wars. He can either have his gritty, bloody space epic, or he can have his next DCEU, he can't have both.
But he's not only trying to have both, he's trying to speedrun both....

Second: So the "movie" was basically a cool trailer that was then filled with pointless/confusing drivel until it could be confused for an actual movie.....IF you're just looking at the runtime.
Well, maybe later on a better storyteller will have a go at that setting and we'll finally get a good story for this.

I work in "the Biz", and am generally a huge Snyder fan, but yeah, I've got my Snyder films that are "Really?" (and then Watchmen happened and I was delighted.) I love this review so much I now want to see it. I love bad bad movies that are bad. (there's a lot of us yelling about 'oh damn it was horrible' and then it is either condemned to 'never see again, director must sit in chair for two-plus hours doing nothing, because that's what happened to us while we watched this.' or 'So Bad it was great.') And I assure you, your review is spot on to any of us (writers, producers, VFX artists, script 'doctors', I think we have a couple Oscar winners, definitely multiple Emmy winners) going off like Krakatoa over (insert title of object of rant) We sort of live for this. But when it drags down the general public, which they all do, (and I personally apologize to you, although I do not work on scripted features.) THIS is what happens, and I am so sorry. Just know that when it happens, we all go down on the ship with you, and are equally incensed and foully loquacious in our righteous rants of Badness. (Send up Bad Movie flare.)
Your review is spectacular, I loved it, I understood every single thing you fabulously flipped out over ... because ... it was like listening to me and favorite producer losing our minds over, "Holy Cr*p, this was a master class of Bad! And yes, (!) damn, because I've seen him make great films and NOBODY should have to go through what happened to him IRL," Based on your review of "Badness on a scale worthy of a DeMille Epic" I will now see this, (also due to your set up and I immediately said, 'This is the 'Dirty Dozen' -- which is also 'Rogue One',((It was also 'Where Eagles Dare' and 'Kelly's Heroes', but that thing kicked ass.)).
Thank you for this great "I cannot believe you DID this to us, how dare you!" vitriolic venting, it was magnificent and I assure you it happens in little production offices hiding all over town. Conversely, when some film shows up that's great, we don't shut up about that either and order everyone to go see it immediately. (Your mileage may vary on this one). I loved this.. (thank you also for reading Forbes magazine. It is a great publication, as is The Atlantic Monthly.) I really hope you work somewhere in the Industry.
