- Northcott is calm and detached, making conversation with the reverend and saying he has no final statement. He loses control on the steps to the noose, though, and is carried up by two guards. A bag is placed over his head and the noose is fitted as straps are tightened around his body to ensure a minimum of struggling, lest the rope break and the whole thing be ruined. As the time approaches, Northcott strangely begins to sing "Silent Night". At the appointed time, the warden nods and the floor drops. Northcott jerks briefly, but after a minute is still.

This movie was so frustrating to watch. The impostor kid, all doctors (not the dentist), the police, the murderer, they were all there lying and making the world a worse place, and we could just watch. It's a very good film, one of the few that actually made me feel emotions while watching it.

This is actually tamer than what actually happened. In the real execution the rope was too slack and it took 13 minutes for him to die from strangulation.

This mans acting is absolutely stupendous!
While everyone seemed to be happy to the death of Northcott and justice is taking place, I believe this moment was much much harder to Christine Collins because she knew that the truth of her son will die with him. She had to keep going with her life believing in fake hope that her son is somewhere outside and he did not tell her. She waited 5 years after the execution to hear again about the case when one of the boys came back in 1935 and it was not him.
didn't they find Walter's remains on the farm parts of them? I mean I know a mother has to hang on to something but I mean t he poor woman he was dead bless her she is with him now in Heaven

As he neared the gallows, he began begging for his life. As the rope was adjusted around Northcott's neck, his last words were 'Don't, don't.' The rope used for the execution was too slack to cause breakage of the neck, and it took thirteen minutes for Northcott to die from strangulation."

One of the best actings I’ve seen. Angelina did a great job on this movie. But if there’s one who deserves to be awarded, I’d choose Jason Butler Harner. He did an incredible job portraying Gordon Northcott, particularly this death scene.

Jason B Harner is such an underrated actor. I think it's this movie that was his break through for his talent for playing an evil guy/villain.
This is for sure one of the top 10 acting performances I've seen in the last 20 years
Its not him being hanged that scared me, it’s the twitching and struggling after he was dropped down that really frightened me

that’s what happens when you’re hanged. you twitch uncontrollably. one thing the movies don’t get correct is that you twitch for a lot more than a few seconds and after you stop, it takes about twenty minutes till you actually die…you only go unconscious till then.
unless it’s a very high drop, you’re lucky then because your neck will break so it’ll be faster

I don't know if it's the shadow from the brim of her hat going slightly over her eyes, but Angelina's facial expressions in this scene give goosebumps. There's so much anger in her stare.

I'd actually sleep more soundly, knowing that such a sick, child-harming monster like that suffered in terror in his last moments. I'd be reassured that there's still a force for good and justice seeking to combat the evil I. This world and hold it to account.

Gordon Northcott died like the coward he was. It was a coincidence that the moment slightly before the trap door sprung he legs gave out. He was falling and that shortened the length of the rope. As a consequence of the shorter fall it wasn't enough force to snap his neck. He strangled to death 11 minutes later.

Angelina Jolie was phenomenal in this film but Jason Butler Harner stole the rest of the film. Such an underrated actor, don't know why he hasn't been cast in a lead role in film or TV. People like him will do a supporting role and outdo the lead actor.

She struggled and choked and shat herself for a whole 12 minutes straight before her moaning ended.the guards said her backside was bulging and her face turned red. Unfortunately the vid is gone.

@@jacobmatthews8021 Death rattle. The noose was also place in the proper position to cause separation of the spine rather than strangulation, but it's not guaranteed. With this kind of force it's not uncommon, from what I've read, for the eyeballs to pop out of the head. That's part of why the mask is worn.

In the movie about Pierrepont it is said that in the USA the rope is too short. Historically The formula for hanging there is based on success of penalties. They have records that in some cases of rope rupture, they had to hang the convict 3 times. So after each year they made the rope shorter in order to have a perfect sentence record. They don't care about quality, only about results and efficiency. The problem is they don't account for the ropes getting stronger and more durable. If you ask me they should begin to reverse the formula each year and keep at least some cases of stranded lose rope. One rope can't be perfect for every case and I am pretty sure they use only military issued, not custom made.

Yes, Pierrepoints method was humane, and fast, and only took seconds, but in his book he states at the end that, " I have come to the conclusion that executions solve nothing, and are only an antiquated relic of a primitive desire for revenge which takes the easy way and hands the responsibility for revenge to other people."

Christopher Reeve's unused wheelchair. I admit _I'm_ not a big fan of Angelina Jolie, _either,_ but I agree Angelina was excellent in this movie and there's another movie she starred in, called "Foxfire" (1996) that was awesome. The trailer for "Foxfire" doesn't really show much of her because her character in the movie is sort of 'mysterious' ... a 20 year old rebellious drifter girl who doesn't take any crap, lol, but she is the leading role in the movie and is onscreen alot more than what they show in the trailer. If you've never seen it, you should check it out. 🍿

The hanging is unrealistic. It's just a few bits of twirling around on the rope with a jolt pass out then lack of oxygen to the brain causes limbs to tense up for a brief time then dead all in 3mims or more
I just heard about this movie. This movie is based on true events. I always thank to Hollywood for creating movies and films which reveal murder cases which were remained secret and mistery in the US history. May Walter Collins's soul be in heaven and rest.
