Tamiya DT02 vs DT03 Sumo Brushless 3900kv Cheap Combos!

  • Upgrading the Tamiya DT-02 MS Sand Viper and the Tamiya DT-03 Racing Fighter 2WD 1/10 Buggy RC Cars with a couple of affordable SUMO brushless combos and digital servos from Yuki Models. Well, and then some steel pinions and my favorite set of tires and wheels.
    The DT-02 MS in the video features several upgrades from Tamiya and 3Racing. The DT-03 Racing Fighter features several upgrades from Tamiya and GPM Racing.
    From the looks of it, the brushless motor, brushless ESC and digital servo seems quite generic and resembles products from similar Chinese brands such as Surpass Hobby, GoolRC and the likes.

    Upgrade? ... or rather downgrading the electronics from some rather expensive Tamiya-stuff, hoping that these cheap brushless combos and servos will be a better match for my two favorite 2WD entry--level buggies? Now I should be able to run them with some peace in mind.
    Looking forward for some acceleration and torque with the high RPM and the lower gear ratio option, the 17T pinion. Worked really great with my last 3500 kv motor in a DT-02.
    Also changing the tire and wheel combo on both units to my favorite set: The Tamiya DT-01 narrow off road front tires and the square spiked off road tires coupled with the Tamiya Star Dish Top Force / Astute wheels, front and rear.
    This set up should also make it possible for some good comparisons. DT-02 versus DT-03 ... 3Racing upgrades versus GPM Racing upgrades ...

    Also, can i suggest you cover that exposed bearing in the end of the motor, with a small square of duct tape or a decal or something. Why they leave those exposed like that I can't understand.
    Before i started covering my ones, i often had to pull motors apart to clean and re oil bearings.
    Now i put a small drop of oil on the bearing, then seal them up.
    Nice video, as always 😁

      Hi Pete! Uhh! That was a good tip! I would probably only have thought of that after seeing it filled up with dirt and dust! Thanks! That deserves to be pinned. I wonder if there is any way to make it look pretty … might ruin the looks. But better that than the bearing and motor in this case.

      @@NordicRC you can use a nice small Tamiya decal left over from a kit to cover it 😁
      A cut out circle of black duct tape you would not even notice with your motor colour. I used silver tape on one of my blue motors, and it matches the alloy bling bits on the car.

      Wow I never noticed the sticker at the bottom of my 3300kv motor actually covered a hole. What a weird design choice, must be because it's cheaper to drill a hole instead of moulding it to hold the pin.

    Hi Mikael! I see you have been spoiling your lovely pair of DT's with some new electrical equipment! And what a beautiful 😍 pair they are, too! The new motors should add a bit of pep to their performance, I'm sure we'll find out soon. Hope your Sunday is going well my friend, all the best from Mark 👍

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mark! He he, yeah, but I wouldn’t say spoiling. It’s more of a down-grade. They were spoiled by those expensive Tamiya brushless motors and ESC’s and Sanwa RC. Now they are ready to run and fly without me being worried. The MS needs a pair of cheaper shocks too though before I’m happy. A bit more RPM too with the new Chinese motors. Hope it isn’t too much ☺️ Ohh, well, if it is, I’ll have fun changing them next winter again 😅 Best of Sundays to you too, Mark. I’m sitting inside and enjoying some Hopper-time.

      @@NordicRC I wound up having to make a skid plate for this guy out of Meccano; I've just about worn away that back screw on the transmission from the wheelies.
      Apparently this system is 3S compatible, but given I set the same ESC on fire last spring by getting it wet, I'm not sure I wanna dump that much power through this one.
      Not to mention I already struggle shoving a 5000mAh 2S hardpac in there.

    Oooff.. vèry purrdy alu goodies. Fighter body in blue metallic looks actually way better than the stock orange. In my experience, the Sumo stuff is simple, no worries, and pretty sturdy at that. I use the simple 12kg Sumo servo’s in both my Wraiths without much issue.
    The longer DT-03 chassis is better at speed, I found out. It stays reasonably controllable, even with mad 5.5t BL motors. The DT-02, on the other hand, is a bit more twitchy, and really likes shorter circuits with a lot of sharp corners. Both are great entry vehicles in their own right, though.

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tim! Thank you! I use Tamiya grease. Both Tamiya silicone and Tamiya ceramic grease. On open spur/pinion gears I run them dry too. But on these sealed/closed gear boxes I add a little. Can’t use too much though. Excess will be thrown off to the side when running so it’s bullet proof.

  • @tjohanne
    @tjohanne ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful. But isn't it better to just throw in a cheap speed controller that handles 3S and a 3S battery. The old silver can handles 3S great (but I did put one on fire in the Lunchbox, having bigger wheels and that).

    • @NordicRC
      @NordicRC  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That could do yes! Like a cheap hobby wing brushed ESC. I do have brushed silver can DT buggies. But brushless motors are still more efficient, less battery-hungry and cooler on a hot summer’s day ☺️
