COSMETOLOGY: CURLING IRON PROCEDURE for STATE BOARD

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 1 ต.ค. 2011
- Step-by-step instruction/class/ training for Beauty School Students, graduates, and foreign cosmetology students to pass the curling iron part of the Blow Dry and Thermal Curling Iron procedure, to get their cosmetology license. At the beginning of the procedure, the examiner would read you the instructions; listen carefully! She would give you 2 minutes to set up, and 10 minutes to finish this procedure. Start only when she will tell you to "start." The requirements state that the applicant/student needs to demonstrate curling 3 curls on the top of the hair previously blow dried during Blow Dry part of this procedure and 4 curls on the side of the hair. The subsection needs not to exceed 3 inches. The temperature of the curling iron needs to be checked on a piece of paper for safety (not to burn the hair). The scalp needs to be protected from the curling iron barrel by using an all purpose or rat tail comb. The croquignole curl could be achieved by starting at the root are of the hear (do not touch the scalp) and curling up the hair strand, periodically clicking the curling iron to not have indentation on the hair. The drape could be changed if soiled. All sanitation and client protection precautions need to be followed. The soiled implements would go into the Soiled Implement Box (labeled the same way). Once you are done with the procedure; step away from your model to indicate the completion of your work. As always, wait for your examiner's instructions. Good luck. Please rate my video.

I passed my exam on Monday, and I am now licensed in two states! Thank you again! God Bless You!!
The most IMPORTANT thing when you taking the State Exam is: Clients safety plus sanitation.
I am 12 years old and I am interested in cosmetology , these videos are great so I can practice while I'm still young for state board :) .Your videos are very helpful hope you make more !!!
I'm going to take cosmetology my senior year, so I'm pretty excited :D People think it's odd because I don't necessarily enjoy doing my own hair and make up, but I enjoy doing other people's.
Andrea Araiza sameee
I'm graduated and I don't wear makeup or do my hair often it happens haha.
Andrea LOL I'm 50 something in cosmetology school and I learned to brush my hair by age 15. Figured out how to use rollers by 32. Yet I found out how much I like to do others hair. 🤣🤷 Still can't reach the back of my head. 🤣🤣🤣
@theHAIRLord Croquignole Curling. It is the one that the hair is wound overlapping all curls together on the rod. The kind that the hair does not overlap, and spirals down is the spiral curl.
I am in fifth grade and when I get older I want to be a cosmetologist :D
That's a great idea: you will have a good career if you are persistent, will keep practicing and have a good personality.
Leafy Treez 👏👏👏👏👏
bonshii Go for it!
And remember people will always need their hair done gr8 choice kid!
If your parents support your dreams start by asking them for a practice mannequin head & tripod to start.. You'll definitely succeed!
Thank you for your videos!! Being licensed from another state that does not do practicals, I was extremely anxious initially about taking the exam here in California. Through your videos I was able to gain more confidence, and also find California Supreme Kit...they were such a blessing. I also met one of your students in the free class that they provide. Your videos on practical and theory were very helpful. i appreciate the time you took to teach people that you may never meet.
I'm currently thinking about if I want to have a career in the cosmetology world, and this video helped!
The only update I could find for the thermal section was 2 curls on the top and 2 curls on the side. Double check with your school though! Thank you for all your information and demos!!!
Oh, you are on the right path! Thanks for watching!
Thank God you guys did tutorials! Thank you!
ohhhh and i would like to say THANK YOU!!!! your videos helped a TON!!!! since i didnt go to school in CA i was really lost!
For state board of Cosmetology they removed the Marcel iron. Before 2011 we used Marcel, too. Not they use the electric iron. In any case, this channel does have a demo for Marcel Iron and the comb.
i just want to say thank you for all your videos. you help me pass the stateboard! thanks
Thank you so much for these videos they were so helpful; as a result , I passed my stateboard
Awesome Thank you!!! Keep the great videos coming!!
@itskathleeen You can place the comb and the curling iron back on the towel, since you can change it later, if it is soiled. Curling iron does not have as much heat as the pressing comb or the marcel iron, so it is ok to place it on the towel.
again THANK YOU for posting these!!!!!
!!!!!
I have state board april 12th so excited/nervous !!! Thank you for the videos!
@EndlessXxDarkx Yes, you can let your curls out, too. You will pass without pinning the curls, too.
You welcome! Thank you for watching!
I'm so excited I'm doing cosmetology next year!
Thank you so much for this! It was extremely helpful :)
@itskathleeen No, the clicking sound is not mandatory, it just happens by itself. All you have to do is to keep moving the curling iron barrel, because if you hold it still, it will burn the hair, or make an indentation. The metal clips are just a suggestion, because they don't burn easily like plastic.
I appreciate all u do thanks again from Colorado
You that you have stated have points: checking the temp, protecting the client with a comb, etc. So by doing them you will earn your points, and if you stated that you are not so great with the iron, you will only lose that part of the point; in any case, since you know you weakness; practice and you'll be fine.
Thanks Lovely! I have my test next week, wish me luck!
loved this lesson!
@doubletapm4 The reason we start to roll from the root are to the end is because the root area and the mid shaft could hold more heat then the ends. The state board thinks it's safer that way so you won't burn the hair ends. Sorry I couldn't answer to your question sooner, I have been working very long hours for past 2 days. Let me know if you passed the test, and give us more info about it, if possible. Thanks
Study, but don't exhaust yourself. Review everything for 5 times and you'll have a positive recall at the test. Go to bed early before your test; DO NOT STUDY A DAY BEFORE YOUR TEST. Your brain needs to rest. You will be getting up early, so try to sleep after 8PM; yes 8 in the evening. Do not start dieting on the day of the test and take vitamins and meds that you usually take; one of my students did not take his insulin, he had to cut his test short, he retook and pass it later.
Gr8 page! thanks for sharing!
I love all of your videos they are VERY helpful. I just phased up at my Cosmetology school and I am having a ball on the clinic floor. I just wanted to know if the State Board Exam is the same for all states because I live in South Carolina.
You welcome! Best of luck!
Congratulations! Glad to be of help! Now is time to work and make some money! :D
@MuriePANIC Starting March 1st, you will use a doll head for state board, so you can control the length of the bangs. You don't have to pin the hair, just curl and let go. If you are going to take a model, just curl the bangs and the side of the hair, even if they are short.
I don't think they would check if you have hair spray on the hair before the test, my only concern is that it might get into a reaction with the cholesterol or any other simulated product; (some might have gel mixed with a conditioner) and it might flake the hair. Another concern is, that when you cut the hair, the hair will slip off of your hands, or your slippery hands might drop the scissors. It is an interesting question, though.
i love your videos keep up the good work can you do soome on flat iroing & perming the hair & coloring
@quiana210 I am not sure about South Carolina State Board test. If they are using the national NIC test, then this is it. California recently adapted this test. You can check in your state's website to see the details. For many years we didn't have blow dry/curling iron procedure at the exam. But, if your state has fingerwave, perm, and the like, I have them in my channel.
nice tips! I'll start checking the temperature of my karmin ge clipless although so far so good :) thanx
@theHAIRLord This is called croquignole curl; it is the kind of curl that is wound overlapping the hair on one curl to the other on the curling iron barrel. The spiral curl swirls around the barrel.
Great job, love the step by step. Who are those curling made by?
Where is the Marcel iron, I had to use a Marcel
th-cam.com/video/MZvzYtGoqec/w-d-xo.html
Here's the Marcel iron; they have changed it; in some states they took Marcel out of the test to save on electricity bill at state board; budget cuts.
i'm just watching this to prepare myself, i'm a freshman and taking cosmetology.
αrl ɢrмeѕ Good luck fellow ARMY!!!!
Heyy, how's your school? Did you go to cosmetology?
@@jamescoutdauginotas6070 hi! i have my cosmetology permit but not my license. i don’t know what happened but there has been very long complications on us trying to do the exam in order to get our license and i’m now in college with no cosmetology license haha.
@@taompons heyy, I hope you will get your license. Can I ask if cosmetology is related to aesthetic/esthetic and after you graduate what will you do in order to be an aesthetician?
Btw, I'm a first year cosmetology student hehe
You can section the way it's convent for you, using 4 sections like in the video is just one way of doing it; the state board left that part flexible as long as you section for control.
You don't have to hold the curls, if you choose so, you can let them hand around the face.
@BeautyHealthTravel after you pin the three curl on the top and four on the aide do you step back and wait until the proctor tells you to clean up or do you finish the curls take out the pins and put them in soiled container along with the tools ???
@doubletapm4 At the end of the curling process, I start turning a half circle or even less, depending how tight is the hair wound on the barrel of the iron. That is how I catch the end of the curl. At the starting point of the curl I can turn the curling iron a full circle, but the secret is to train your hand to do quarter to half circles, and you'll have more control of the hair and the curling process. Let me know if you have tried, and how it went. It'll get better with practice.
CONGRATULATIONS!
@SOULKhmer State board is no longer asking to do the press and curl procedure. They don't use marcel iron any more. They use any electrical curling iron that is preferably not larger than an inch. All they require about it is that the iron needs to be clean of hair, gel, rust and any debris.
@miamimikedevine You welcome; keep watching! I have a facial massage stimulator coming up, and an airbrush make up.
Our board does not indicate on which direction, as long as we have the curls; if your state board has specific instructions, it would be better to follow them, since they grade you on the accuracy of following their instructions.
Thanks for u videos!!
Do you have any videos were you do figure eight curls???
No, it is there for control, but they don't require clips in California at this time.
You don't have to follow the sample, you don't even need to pin the curls. Just curl with the curling iron, and you are done. This video is just one way; there are many teachers, many ways, as long as they follow the state board guidelines. You can also follow your teacher's guideline at school. Whatever works for you, but, remember, you don't have to pin the curls.
Write a personal message and I will answer your questions.
@BeautyHealthTravel I PASTTT! Im so happy, my test was today!
When do I drape? During the initial set up or Blow dry procedure? Can I keep in the sectioning clips after the blow dry procedure for the curling procedure or do I need to re clip?
I can remember doing this state board stuff in beauty school back in "05
where did you go to beauty school?
+Ayo Riikah red to kkbv
im in cosmetology school right now, and my teacher goes to the state boards every year and told us we are required to use a marcel.
thank you for the video!!!
@gwen2559 I am not sure about Georgia state board. It would be best to check Georgia state board website; if they have adapted the NIC cosmetology test, then this is the same.
Thank you so much. I am waiting and waiting for you to make the rest of the videos. Please please please -3
@luvNique4ever One time testing for temperature is OK, and, yes, state board doesn't mind if the hair is on the face; especially now, when it is a doll head. I recorded this video before I found out about that, but this is passing, too.
I gonna to have cosmetology test in California, Sep.26.2016 with 2 curl on top and 2 curl on the side, So can I still using this technic ?? This is technic formed ( Base to end)????
@xAlyssaJean You welcome!
Hi: Thanks for the VDO it is wonderful.
Do you know how is the dress to the exam?
You welcome!
So, if I am bad at marceling they are cool as long as my client is safe? I got do really bad but if I test the temp, protect with comb, make clicks, etc I could pass? Do they check for fish hooks?
i think my prob would be im using a much smaller iron right now... meaning its harder to catch the ends since the flap part is smaller....
can i ask... is it wrong just the clamp down the the ends from the start and then roll the curl? i have boards tomorrow... and things im having most truble is this... and getting all my color/tint, and relaxer done in time...
anyone from delaware washing this,Please need to know if the top curls go vertical or horizontal?
Ive seen some hairstylist leave their curling iron on even if theres no customers. I am going to go to cosmetology school next year 😊
My instructor told us that we can’t touch the hair at all only to invert the hair clips; is that right? I would like to hold the end of the hair as I roll.
I want to be a cosmetologist when I grow I’m I’m 9 and I really like this even though I already know how to curl my hair and my 3 manikin head it really helps me. I do makeup nails and hair. ♥️
It looks like you are heading for big success: good luck. I wish I was focused on my career as you when I was nine.
@swthun4lyf3 Yes, I have a manicure video. It is called: COSMETOLOGY: MANICURE for STATE BOARD. It is a step-by-step manicuring demo. The only difference is that it is done on a fake plastic hand with artificial nails attached to it, so you have to pretend most of the moves. If I buy a fake hand, I will try to make one, though, but, meanwhile, there is a back-up. Just type the title in my channel's search box.
@BeautyHealthTravel HEYYYY!!!! I PASSED!!!!!.... in fact every one that took the test passed.... our instructor was a very cool relaxed guy... and to tell the truth the head barber guy was really cool to!!!!... funny thing is... i saw alot of other people making some big mistakes.... yet they passed... i think the new boards is not nearly as hard as they want you to believe... like there was some BIG mistakes people were making and they still got passing score.. i dunno... BUT IM HAPPY!!!!
I just done my mock exam! I'll be real nervous when I have to take the real one!
Is there any difference with the way you curl when you curl the hair? Because the way I was learning in my class is that we do ON BASE, 1/2 BASE, OFF BASE, and Figure 8 Curls.
What I'm confused about is the difference between the first three, or if there isn't any difference at all.
Oh, I am not sure if Virginia state board requires a Marcel iron. The best way to find out is the check Virginia state board's website. Please let us know if you find out. Thank you!
I love your videos! Iwill be taking the CA Cosmetology exam soon. Is there any updated information that I should be informed about?
Great decision to go to beauty school! They have updated the cosmo test couple of months ago, but it is too early for you to wary about it. Your school will train you for that.
@LovelyXBunny Good luck! Let me know how you did on your test.
after we curl each section you need to put a metal clip? my teacher never told me that is it necessary?
You are in my prayers
@doubletapm4 You welcome!
Hi......When you take the state test do they supply you with your necessary supplies?
You don't have to use the duckbill clips, the curls can hang loose, if you want. It's OK.
I thought on the top you ad to do 3 curls straight back & 4 down the side. Does it just depend on the state you are in?
Do we have to make the clicking sound?? because it doesn't say anywhere that the candidates are looking for it?? and also, stateboard doesn't say anything about having the metal clips? I am a little confused!! but thank you for these helpful videos!
Stateboard doesnt mind if the hair is in the clients face? also should we test the temperature for each curl or is 1 time good enough?
Will you be require to use a Marcel iron on the state board, or is it just a basic clip curling iron?
Not necessary, just did it for control, but you can let the curls free, too.
im having a problem every time i try to get the fish hooks out my by clicking and pulling lightly the hair alllwaayyyysssss falls out... cant figure out how u do it without the hair falling out....
hasnt soap and water been replaced by using a hand sanitizer (purell) ??
Hi I was wondering if you can do an update on this video please
@redyellowandgreen You can also sanitize hands with the hand sanitizer; state board accepts that.
Great video!
+Monat Independent Market Partner - Pille Kapetanakis Thanks!
@BeautyHealthTravel i look forward to watching the videos & i am already subscribed :)
In beauty supplies, as long as it is 1 inch diameter.
I asked my professor to check... In NY it is required to use an electric "thermal" iron. which has a Marcel handle. she said we would not be allowed to use a standard spring iron on the state board examination.
If I wanna buy a cosmetology school book to just kinda learn on my own which one is the best one to buy? I'm disabled but I would love to go to cosmetology school someday.
