Rains or soaking soil deep instigates fruiting - quite simple really - everyone should grow Jab
nice, be careful what you wish for! 3:50 Lorikeets discovered mine & ate every last one! It is a bountiful fruiting tree so luckily I was already Jaboed-up.
I've got 6 fruiting sabaras, 5 fruiting grimals, 2 fruiting red hybrids, 1 fruiting scarlet, acu paulista, costada and z4. Still another 20 odd varieties to fruit. Did I mention how much I ❤️ jabos!
Nice. You forgot to mention that you're almost 2,000km north of me, where it's hot, wet and humid for half of the year!!
@RealLifeFruitopia oh its no competition. Of course, things grow faster here. Just to show how much I love them, I agree everyone should should be growing one or thirty! I recommend scarlet and red hybrid, three years old and they fruit all year.
@@dougs_urbanfarm red hybrid grow really well here and Costada but Scarlet seems a tad more tropical and needs more heat
@melbournesubtropicfruits9474 ah ok, don't need to worry about that up here! I have found scarlet is very ph fussy and needs it low to be happy, whereas red hybrid doesn't seem as sensitive.
@@dougs_urbanfarm Correct - im using similar acidic Low PH Peat mixes like Adam at FFF for all my potted jabs - Scarlet does like the warmth tho
I’m a jabuticaba fan I’ve 3 Sabara, 2 red, 1 gigante and 1 Cambuca .
Check out flying fox fruits he has the largest rare variety he’s here in Fl . I had to really control myself not to turn in to a collector . Awesome video and keep her pruned that makes a world of difference for fruiting. Happy gardening 🪴
Thanks for the tip!
I have 2 seedlings (unknown variety) planted in ground. they are probably a couple of years old, so I got a long wait ahead of me, can't wait until that day comes lol.
Time will tell, they are worth the wait. Good luck!
😂yummy! My jab is still a little baby about 3 years old…patience
That's great!
Beautiful tree!! It looks nice after the pruning! 🙂 I heard that jobos need acidic soil? Is this is true, do you add something for that?
And is the fruit skin edible?
Yes, you heard right. I'm not sure where you are, but I add this product from Bunnings, Australia's largest big box store. www.bunnings.com.au/richgro-2-5kg-all-purpose-gardenia-azalea-and-camellia-fertiliser_p2961376
@@RealLifeFruitopia I'm in Canada. But good to know! there's probably an equivalent product here. Many thanks! :)
Wow 12 years old, this looks great! I'm currently trying to pick a jabo and due to the wait of these have decided to go with a red hybrid or scarlet. Have you got any of these or know how they compare with the sabara or grimal?
Doug in Brisbane is the jabo expert, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer.
Both are good, if I was picking one it would be the scarlet, fruit are very sweet and they are heavier bearers than the red. Both are worth growing and are happy in pots, mine are in pots and fruit 4 times a year.
Thanks for the insight. I’ll start with scarlet but probably end up adding both to the collection
I have one Sabara (in the ground for almost 2 years from small seedling stage) and a Grimal (slightly larger seedling) planted this year… do you know how many years I can expect to wait before my first fruit?
Sabara 8-12 years to fruit and grimal 5-8 years. My sabaras started fruiting at about 10 years and grimals at 6. This is from seed planted.
@@dougs_urbanfarm thank you 🙏🏼 We gardeners need such extreme patience 😆
Haha probably 20 years for me to wait in my climate to see fruit, insanely slow growing 😅😅
Grow one in a pot like so many do, bring it in for winter. You can do it, Brett!
@@RealLifeFruitopia lol of course its in a pot mate, its currently relaxing in my kitchen, the forecast in my area is -5c tonight haha, there's no tropical or subtropical that could survive those temperatures 😂
@@RealLifeFruitopia just come outside and currently -6c at 9:00 in the morning 🥶🥶😂😂
@@lyonheart84 A heatwave next Tuesday for you, 14C!
@@RealLifeFruitopia yeah don’t I just love UK weather 😂😂
What fertilizer do you use and how often? I just bought one
Slow release pellets at the beginning of spring and summer and compost monthly.
@@RealLifeFruitopia thank you
It just rain in Melbourne right?
Yep, this is the rainiest summer ever!
That mark = call it stretch marks
