You can always lasso people instead of shoot them if you are uncertain if they are the enemy. Even if they are innocent, you'll only get an assault case, not murder.

You need to clean your guns. The dirtier they are, the less damage they do. Also sell pelts to the butcher or trapper. Study the animals to know what gun to use to get a perfect pelt for more money/clothes at the trapper
