Before the video loaded, I went through the intro in my head. “Hey everyone, Mah-Dry-Bread here. Pokémon ______ with ______ was a [Insert difficulty description between “fun” or “brutal”] run. Let’s follow it up with [ideation of how the challenge will go]” It’s nice to have such familiarity to the content.
I lowkey want to make a knockoff april fools MDB video with all the mannerisms and the outro where he doesn't know what to talk about and hasn't had breakfast yet. Because that's hilarious. Then I remember that I'm not a youtuber and it wouldn't make any sense
Or the very end of the video when he says I’m looking forward to your challenge suggestions in the comments but then ignores them and does whatever random challenge that no one asked for like Tropius in Heartgold for some reason.
It's like the intro song to a sitcom. The familiarity is part of the charm. While things are slightly different everytime, we always have a general idea of how things are gonna go.
Alakazam and Dugtrio have a crit rate of 23.44%. Crit is base speed x 100/512. So (120 x 100)/512 = 23.4375. Also, Fissure and Horn Drill are based on current speed, not base speed. It's why the Gambler in Pokemon Stadium used Agility before knocking out my Mewtwo and Mew.
Remember, the EVs make a huge difference in Gen I and II, and you've been using that Grimer since the beginning of the run, so they've probably maxed out by Silph Co.
#MDBA Challenge idea: Can you Beat Oblivion, Poison only run? The rules are pretty simple: - you can only use Poison as a means of dealing damage - when using alchemy, you can only make poison of course, you can add rules as you see fit As usually, I'm writing this before you ever did the challenge let me know in the comments if MDBA decides to do it at any point. Comments are good for the YT algorithm after all
A Gen 9 run where you only use Explosion moves to deal damage could be possible. In that game you can get two Pokémon with Revival Blessing to revive your Pokémon. With two healers and two Leppard berries, you'd have 8 Explosions.
These sorts of team runs are fun but it's unfortunate that you sometimes get your team so late in the game. Honesty I wouldn't mind if you did another gym leader run and just gave yourself the full team at lv5 right at the start. It'd show off the team more and keep it from being a pseudo-solo run, but I'd be curious to hear what other people think of this. Great video as always :)
Muk's back sprite makes em look like someone who has prompted a high five but been left hanging. Koga's fight felt like a passing of the torch... one that MDB will just toss into the sea as he makes his way to Blaine! Edit: Idea! Pokemon Platinum as Lt. Surge. Not his Red/Blue Team but as his buffed Raichu. You get Thunderbolt, Growl, Mega Punch, Mega Kick the entire run.
I'm honestly surprised he's never taken the dome fossil in one of these videos. I figured he would've took the dome fossil at least once to see if we noticed
Team Run Suggestion: Any pokemon game with "I can only use my pokemon's moves once per battle", with Selfdestruct, Explosion & other similar moves being the fourth move of all the pokemon. It's a way to have an Explosion-based run that isn't absolutely doomed to failure, and you might actually find the run fun.
Here is an idea “Can I beat Pokemon Red with only ‘Blast Boom Destruct and Bomb’ like Moves! If you start with Voltorb you get Sonic Boom at level 17 making it possible from the start of the game. Plus in Gen 1 it hits Ghosts for some reason. It would be funny and stupid and interesting! Would love to see a video of it. Moves you could use: Explosion, Self Destruct, Fire Blast, Egg Bomb, Sonic Boom, Spike Cannon, Pin Missile, and Smoke Screen. Every Gen 1 move related to explosions!
It tends to happen in team runs where most of the team is caught late. Why waste the time training up weak Pokemon when you can just use the overlevelled one you have
regarding the self destruct only challenge: you could just allow revives in battles during that challenge to make it possible to beat trainers with 6 pokemon? could be a fun challenge to limit how many revives you're allowed or something. maybe also in a different gen so that you can use abilities or something like soak in order to hit ghosts
He’d have to start with beldum, as I’m pretty sure its the only pokemon whose level 1 move has recoil. Either that or play normally until he has such a move
I have an idea for a fun challenge, One that means you could even use Drowzee. Can you beat Pokemon Black (Or any game from gen's 5 ,6 or 7) with only the move Assist? Purrloin learns Assist at level 6 so it'd be the starter, Then if you get a male Purrloin you can breed it with other's to get more Pokemon. I think this would be a great wacky challenge since the more Pokemon on your team the more random the move is. For any that don't know Assist uses a random move known by any of the user's party Pokémon, With some exceptions. So even Pokemon that can't use Assist would still be useful if they have good moves that Assist can use. Drowzee is in the Human-Like Egg Group so If you want one with Assist you'd need a Spinda since they're in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so can breed with Purrloin and Drowzee. You could also use a Chimchar as a starter if you give it Assist as an Egg Move, They're also in the Field and Human-Like Egg Groups so a male one can breed the move into any Pokemon with Assist.
@@MahDryBread That would be awesome. Fingers crossed. Third age is a really special game, the plot actually improves the story of lord of the rings in a unique way and gives you a better understanding of Boromir’s struggle and the way Gandalf thinks. Low key a random PS2 game adds more to the series than the multi million dollar hobbit movies and rings of power.
For the crazy people that want to see a kaboom move only run, a guy called RBY pokemon challenges made a video titled something like "3, 2, 1, BOOM." The gist is that all six pokemon had a self-destruct move, and 3 others. The 3 other moves only had 1 pp each thanks to software hacks. Meaning after 3 turns, the pokemon had to blow up. It's been a while so I don't remember how far they got but it was a pretty funny gag run idea.
Gotta say, I do like your other challenges. Mainly because it’s whether or not YOU can do it, not whether or it is technically possible. Like there was recently an Elder Scrolls 3:Morrowind challenge without walking. Must’ve been absolute torture for the guy, but entertaining to watch. I wouldn’t want you do that, but your thematic challenges are a treat.
Okay, but hear me out. A run where the only legal moves are Selfdestruct, Explosion, Struggle (if the previous two are ineffective or you only have the one team member), and Bide (if Gen 1 and the previous three are ineffective). You're allowed to use Revives (and maybe even Max Revives) in battle, but only Revives (and maybe Max Revives) and you are allowed to use non-damaging moves in inconsequential battles to get to Struggle as long as the opponent does not faint. Maybe a little more tuning than that, but you could totally make it work.
I`m not giving up! my b2w2 hidden grotto encounters only challenge idea: - you can only use hidden grotto encounters - you can use a full team and have some extra of course - you can use the randomizer to change the starters to sap sipper marill, rattled dunsparce and scrappy lillipup (they are the floccesy ranch´s grotto encounters which are the "closest" ones) you do need to solo 3 gyms with one pokemon but it can be done! and you can get a wide variety of pokemon with their hidden abilities!
I'd say in order to add some variety to this maybe he uses the Nuzlocke rule of one per location. He can keep going to the grottos but the first Pokemon he gets there is the only one he's allowed to catch in that grotto. It'll mean he won't be sure what team he'll end up with and adds a fun challenge for the rest of us as we see what team he ends up building.
For reference I used a calc, changed muks spec d to 65. 76 to 91% assuming both pokemon had perfect IV's and no extra stats. Your muk had extra stats I'm not aware of, so it probably was closer to 60-75 with stat exp but that really just enforces the crit was needed.
Fun to watch, as always! How about three ideas. The first would be a Vulpix only Run in Gen 4. Platinum should be possible i guess? Heartgold/Soulsilver would be brutal, but i would suggest a whole Team. Second i would love to see an Eeveelution run. All Eeveelutions allowed. Most fun i guess, should be gen 4 Platinum. Third, can you beat Pokémon Crystal as Elite 4 Bruno? I have no clue how this will turn out, but it should be possible. Maybe even easy.

I think an explosion/selfdestruct only run could work if you adjust the no-items rule to allow for revives! Maybe only one revive per pokemon/battle, or only on 6-person teams? Though, of course, there's ghosts to consider too. 🤔 Maybe in a gen with something to get around the typing... I imagine training things up without exp share would be a nightmare though haha. it's an interesting thought experiment!
Hey i just had a great idea! Can you beat emerald with one numel? If you've noticed i have been commenting this frequently. I'm not doing any bit here, just using repition to increase the odds MDB sees the idea
Could you do pokemon platinum with only 1 Probopass? I think it's an adorably goofy looking pokemon, with some decent stats, but some glaring weaknesses; which I think would all add up to an interesting and fun challenge run!
I don't want to criticize you, but I found it disappoint that basically the entire team could only be caught after beating Koga, making the firts half of this run technically a Grimer/Mug run. I was looking forward to see a mirror match. Something that would even be more of a pain, which I will also suggest as a run: Pkémon Red with Lance's team. Even if you hack yourself a Dratini for a starter, you still have to catch two more, either in the Safari Zone or at the Rocket Game Corner for 2800 coins each (or 4600 in Blue?!), and you also get Aerodactyl at the lab on Cinnabar Island.
Week 10 of asking for B2/W2 with only one Remoraid I wonder what would happen if you tried other games with gen 1 boss teams, they're all horrible so it could make for a pretty hard run
Huh the next challenge is with a Tropius. Can be interesting, I love that pokémon just never get the chance to have one in game. I know for sure is a big pokémon but I think it still a pretty weak too. Pokémon Challenge suggestion: You are free to go with the game of your choice, but the challenges is using only middle evolution stage pokémon. (For Exemple: If you pick Bulbasaur as your starter, you can only battle with Ivysaur.) You are not allowed to use pokémon who's has no evolution or only 1, it must be a pokémon with a 2 stage linear Evolution. So pokémon like Eevee or Tyrogue are not allowed, but pokémon like Oddish, Poliwag or Ralts are allowed. Try number: 7
There is a way to have explosion hit ghost types with no setup, though only in gen8 and beyond. Alolan Geodude Graveler, and Golem have the Galvanize, which turns all normal type moves into electric type moves (along with a 20% boost before STAB), which is actually pretty cool. I feel like someone would’ve made a ROM of one of the earlier gems that adds the regional variants, which could make for an interesting run, using a variant of a mon you’ve used before
12:00 With a base speed of 120, Alakazam's critical hit chance is 23.44%, 3rd highest in the game. You had a fairly solid chance of getting your butt handed to you in that Sabrina fight!
@@MahDryBread Electrode, with a base 140 speed, has a 27.34% chance. Almost a 1 in 3! Aerodactyl, Jolteon, and Mewtwo are tied for 2nd highest at a 25.39% chance. Alakazam and Dugtrio are tied for third. There's a nice article on Smogon University called "Critical Hits in RBY" which lists every Pokemon's base speed and what it means for their critical hit rate. It's short and to-the-point.
I always enjoy the Pokemon challenge runs, but I also miss your Elder Scrolls and Fallout runs as well. Both your Oblivion and New Vegas runs motivated me to try and beat those games for the first time, and ehile I've yet to beat either of them, I've had fun playing both of them. Also, here's an idea that I expect won't be done but I'm throwing it out there anyways. Your choice of game, but with only status/non-attacking moves. So toxic, leech seed, curse, etc.
Edit : stat exp/EVs and not DVs i think the alakazam doing that little when you fought rival fivel was maybe thanks to dvs, since you had muk from the start it probably accumulated a ton. DVs change things a lot ; I did a run in hgss and got butchered by lance, needing to grind a lot to beat him but then years later did a run in gold with a team with most of the same team members as the previously stated team and around the same level and needed to grind way less, if at all. DVs are pretty bonkers.
I think the only way an Explosion/Self Destruct run would work is if you repealed the 'no items in battle' rule and let yourself use Revives during battle. But yeah, Ghost types become a problem there

What's the highest in the game? Electrode?
@@MahDryBread Electrode, with a base 140 speed, has a 27.34% chance. Almost a 1 in 3!
Aerodactyl, Jolteon, and Mewtwo are tied for 2nd highest at a 25.39% chance.
Alakazam and Dugtrio are tied for third.
There's a nice article on Smogon University called "Critical Hits in RBY" which lists every Pokemon's base speed and what it means for their critical hit rate. It's short and to-the-point.
It would be interesting to see some challenges like this but using the Red teams in different games or the remakes.
Should note that while crit rates are based on *base* speed, OHKO moves are based on *real* speed.
I'd love to see a Gen 2 solo Dunsparce run, I like bringing it to the elite 4 in silver. Just a gimmicky pokemon that is surprisingly useful
16:40 Maybe a run with only "self damaging" moves? just do your recoil damage + self destruct and such, call it the reckless run.
YES MY FAVE GEN 1 GYM LEADER!!!
Another week Another request for X/Y with only Gift Pokemon
So just play normally? The game gives you like 10 broken pokemon before the 4th gym
You don’t have to ask us to watch, we see you upload and it’s instinctive to click.
Edit : stat exp/EVs and not DVs
i think the alakazam doing that little when you fought rival fivel was maybe thanks to dvs, since you had muk from the start it probably accumulated a ton. DVs change things a lot ; I did a run in hgss and got butchered by lance, needing to grind a lot to beat him but then years later did a run in gold with a team with most of the same team members as the previously stated team and around the same level and needed to grind way less, if at all. DVs are pretty bonkers.
Boy, I wonder if he's gonna take the Dome fossil this time!
(Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm)
I think the only way an Explosion/Self Destruct run would work is if you repealed the 'no items in battle' rule and let yourself use Revives during battle. But yeah, Ghost types become a problem there
Brock's full heal thing is, indeed, strange. 5 per Pokémon.
Well that was a weird one!
When the battle with Agatha is agonizing, it's... Agathanizing.
Hey MDB, will Mario Party ever come back? I loved all those fun vids with the gang
