I just started watching it and the first thing that catches my attention is MDB saying “I don’t know about you but when I think about Johto, I absolutely don’t think of tropius” my thoughts: “MDB, there is a good reason you don’t. Tropius didn’t exist there. It is from Hoenn.” Then I read the title and curse my own idiocy for not paying attention. Lol
i was thinking the same thing
Honestly me too cuz I've been use to the old school gameboy game runs
Just wait until you read the description and see a gen 4 pokemon, further muddling everything.
Same, I thought it was og Gold at first and not _HeartGold_ and spent 10 minutes wondering how he got a gen 3 Pokemon into a gen 2 game
Thank you!!! I Thought I was going mad!!!
Ha! This is my time to shine, yes I HAVE had a Tropius in HG/SS! In fact, I've done the challenge you've just finished in every possible game! I have a Tropius tattoo on my shoulder, and I think I probably have the only one! Tropius is my boy, the pokemon I'd have if I could only have one, and holds a special place in my heart. If #357 has no fans, consider me dead!
I love it, my first reaction when I first saw one was to find where they live and go get one.
I assumed you used a berry to cure paralysis in this kind of run when they spam Thunder Wave unlike MDB
Is beating both Red and Blue possible?
@@Detective_LTropius is so bad it probably just gets Thunder Waved multiple times anyway since it can't one hit most TWave users
I love Tropius!! I made a model of Tropius out of rainbow loom bands! It's cute face is smiling on my shelf❤
Tropius really, really needs an evolution, though I'd even accept a few retconned stats like Game Freak sometimes implements, like how Raichu got additional speed at one point.
A regional form or evolution would be much appreciated
I'd love to see a regional grass rock Tropius with crystals on it's back instead of wings. Give him Power Gem and Giga Drain. Go to town. Like a four legged Godzilla.
They should give it thick fat.
@@That_Doctor_Del_Fella I dislike regional forms because they are just a lazy way to reuse old designs and give nothing to the original pokemon. For example how OG Raticate is any better or viable now that Alolan Raticate exists?
Yeah, I'd love to see it get some love like Dodrio and the like did. Or a regional form like Grass/water type based off aquatic plants and dinosaurs or something, but honestly I love it just how it is :3
Couple tips to help your HG and SS runs in future.
Remember that you can find very early shell bell in HG and SS in route 32 behind a smashable rock (HM can be found in the ruins of Alph and can be used freely after the first gym) next to the bird keeper. It's just before entering the union cave.
Also as another tip, smashing rocks in this game sometimes yields shards that you can exchange to berries with npc in Azalea town next to the pokecenter. This can easily net early sitrus berries and status berries that can help your journey. I don't know the chances of drops but on each save I have yielded few in 5 minute smash sessions so it's very easy thing to grind for. It's my go to way to get 10 oran berries for the ranch (to unlock the moomoo milk) because you find the shards so much faster.
Also if you decide to let mom hold on to your pocket money, she can send rare berries that are helping to reduce the damage of certain type your pokemon is weak to. I have done challenge runs in this game and it seems to be coded to look at your party weaknesses so there's a higher chance to get them. For example if the event pops while you have only normal type pokemon in your party, she will send berry that reduces fighting type damage.
Hope these will help your future runs. 😊
It's ok, I feel like almost everyone has had that assumption about Ice types. It's REALLY weird that the only thing it resists, is more ice. I'm frankly shocked they didn't add any additional resistances to either flying or grass in gen VI where they tried really hard to rebalance the types. I blame them trying to make charizard a thing again.
Rule 1 of Accuracy in Pokemon: If it's not 100% accurate, it's 50% accurate
Hearing about the 3 turn of attract on you from Whitney reminded me of something I saw watching a Kaizo Ironmon run of HG. At Whitney's of all places, an Italian streamer that I watch got a THIRTEEN turn attract before winning.
I dream more THAT now, than rollout 🤣
Anyway, great video, Tropius was an exotic choice, and I like these
You caught your error with the Ice resistance, but you didn’t correct the statement about Bug being super effective against Tropius.
wait, using Roost gets rid of the user's flying type for a turn? Never knew that
Yeah, the turn a Pokemon uses roost, it loses all the flying type's weaknesses, resistances and immunities. A pure flying type like Rookidee actually becomes normal type while roosting. Also, fun fact I just checked form Serebii, a dual type Fire and Flying like Charizard or Moltres that lost it's fire type by using the move Burn Up actually becomes typeless while roosting instead.
Cause it's kind of hard to roost while in the air so it has to land thus is no longer flying.
The text says you lose flying type in the game
@@gliddens24Makes sense until you notice it also works for Dodrio.
@@Val664why is Dodrio anything special here?
Hey man, I use to be a fan a few years ago and was so proud to see you keeping the content up. It’s nice background noise to play while shiny hunting or playing Pokerouge. Keep up the good work man
next time as a joke you should say they get "cool moves" then list the moves they get that are the cool ribbon type
\
Was it just me or did MDB call Falkner’s Pidgeotto Pidgeot?
Not just you
@@ShadowtheTH-camr523 good so I wasn’t going crazy
I think being a flying type is tropius’ best advantage
Never used tropius in johto but definitely used one in hoenn! I always loved the design and thought it was so cool! Cant wait to see how the run unfolds with one of my favorite underappreciated pokemon! 😊 Keep up the great work MDB love to see it ❤
Can't wait to watch this while flying home tonight.
11:58 On second thought, tweet about it anyway. Tweets are good for the TH-cam algorithm.
YESSS I loved tropius back in the day! His typing was so unique and and I thought he was a really fun pokemon
I think my favorite videos are the series you do with Whatageek and Gooseit. Stadium, deadly premonition, la noire, deus ex, nancy drew. All absolute bangers!
For the fight with Red, you can set the weather condition to Diamond Dust if you change the date to particular ones. That way, you don't have to deal with Hail effects in the battle, and Lapras doesn't bypass accuracy checks with Blizzard.
Fun tropius fact: in the early scarlet/violet vgc (competitive doubles) meta, tropius was a niche menace utilizing leech seed stall of all things! stall is a usually notoriously terrible doubles strategy, usual classic stall singles mons like toxapex cant tank 2 mons focusing them down but...tropius of all things could. It fell off hard after early regulations, but shout out to banana beard for making me want to throw my switch across the room a couple of times lol
Pretty sure Piloswine has snowcloak which is why razor leaf was missing so much against Pryce
Roost losing flying type was a fact that scrambled my brain. Trouple H would've been Gold, shoulda done Soul Silver instead, I guess. A wild Missingno appeared at 27:15!
This run was really fun to watch, Trop is such an odd duck of a Pokémon that seeing it in action was a blast! Would love to see you use it again in FRLG, I think it would fare better but still be a challenge. Lastly, my girlfriend really loves Stardew so you know you’ll have us watching the TH-cam uploads!
I HAVE caught a Tropious in Heartgold, but that was sandwiched between a shiny Spinda and a failed shiny Magmar.
Let's go! I can't wait to see him set up the sun and use 1 turn Solar Power boosted Solar Beams...
Well, guess not... still a great video as always, though
Here's a fun idea, can you beat pokemon emerald with one numel? Double weak to water!
Great lesson in that move-pool is critical in a good mon.
Surprised you didn’t go for a Natural Gift strat with this run, but still great as always!
Huh. I didn't know there are days where Red doesn't have Hail. That would've made it more doable if you set the clock just because blizzard would no longer be 100% accuracy but back to normal 70%. But with 3 Pokemon that probably can't be one shot (maybe you could one shot Blastoise with a crit) you are looking at 30% * 30% * 30% = a 2.7% chance for 3 blizzards to miss you. Doable considering some of your insane earlier runs years ago, but a potential path you could've tried for the fight. Plus all the extra turns of leftovers with fly and no hail might've helped.
Fun video, thanks.
Another awesome run...
Can ya do a heracross run? Gotta keep the streak going
I think this is the first time, you was able to beat Heartgold/Soulsilver, wasn't it?
Was fun to watch. Runs which could be fun, are a Vulpix only run in gen 4 Platinum/Soulsilver. In Platinum one should be more interesting. Soulsilver, please, for your sanity, just take a team of these cute fluffballs.
Second, i'm interested what you will do with a team of 6 Eeveelution's. Best in Platinum. It should be easy, but take it as some easy challenge for once.
Third: i wonder, if Elite 4 Bruno can beat Pokémon Crystal. It should work out, but don't know how easy or difficult it may become.
Description mentions Regi instead of Tropius.
6:33 6 health, not 4. 9:56 and 16:42 Graphical glitch 12:08 Magical Leaf could've saved you! 18:22 I guess so but it has been physical since gen 4.
Would like to note that MDB's comment that grass is a rough type for Johto isn't quite accurate. Grass isn't that great a type in general. Lots of weaknesses and for the most part just a less good water type offensively. Plus Flying Bug and poison types are fairly common in most games, especially early, and all of those are super effective on grass types. Anyways, great video as always. Which fossil did you take? Comments are good for the TH-cam algorithm.
Most of the good grass starters are carried by the games being built with them in mind, but then again grass types are great for support in doubles so at least they are great at something
Grass isn't a bad typing per sae. It tends to be a good support/defensive type. Grass types do struggle harder in Jhoto than any other region. Mainly because there's no overlap in the gyms between Kanto and Jhoto is because most of the types Grass is strong against or resists (Rock, Water, Electric, Ground) are Kanto gyms. Also, most of the bad Grass match ups are Jhoto gyms (flying, bug, ice, steel, dragon, and the Ghost gym which is also a Poison gym).
I’ve personally had a lot of luck with Dhelmise. Not exactly the first grass type normal people think of(or first ghost type for that matter) but it’s my favorite ‘mon and I’m not a normal person. Getting essentially 3 STAB types thanks to Steelworker is neat and allows for some solid coverage. Liquidation and Earthquake are both solid options to deal with fire types, or you can run Brick Break to deal with dark and steel types(and Reflect). Brutal Swing is also there but STAB Shadow Claw or Phantom Force are both better options against ghost/psychic types imo.
Unfortunately its grass coverage is hindered by not getting many physical grass moves(as much as I wish it got Leaf Blade, it makes sense not to since seaweed/kelp isn’t actually a plant and doesn’t have leaves- why yes I did take the time to learn about macroalgae because my fictional funny little big guy is that), but that does mean it’s not out of the question to rely on ghost and steel STAB without grass coverage in favor of one of the other physical coverage options it gets. However I usually run brave nature(+atk -spd) so that Giga Drain is a viable grass move for healing; its speed isn’t great to begin with but it has enough bulk to realistically take a hit or two and pull off some amount of recovery. If you can nail something weak to grass with Anchor Shot(which prevents switching), even better!
Defensively, it’s actually not too bad for a grass type. No quad weaknesses, dual typing means it only takes neutral damage from poison and bug, normal and fighting immunity of course, can’t be trapped in battle, and immune to powders/spores/leech seed. Given that it has reliable coverage for every type it’s weak to except flying(I do not trust Rock Slide), even in bad match ups it’s not necessarily helpless. Slap an assault vest on it and you’ll probably be able to catch quite a few people off guard. But what do I know, my only experience in competitive is battling in SV for free stuff, and Dhelmise isn’t even in that. 😔
Grass isn’t a great type on the surface, but immunity to leech seed and spore/powder moves(except poison powder iirc) in modern games is a very overlooked trait of the type imo. And at least it isn’t ice!
My two cents on doing single challenge runs. The Krabby instance around minute 25 actually affected how a lot of the battle went. A single attack drop from intimidate lowers your attack by 33%. After Pidgeot used whirlwind you now got an effective attack buff for the rhydon and Machamp. If you look at the damage range for rhydon he used multiple full restores because you kept bringing him to red health. If you still had the intimidate stat drop then a) Machamp might not have been a one shot and b) those rhydon full restores would be available for Machamp who could hit you in the air due to No Guard.
In addition the AI in later games won't use Whirlwind if you have 1 Pokemon. It's a minor thing but always is in the back of my mind when I see you enter a boss fight with more than one pokeball that technically the outcome can be affected just by the presence of HM users even if they don't fight. I know it isn't feasible to box them before every boss fight (especially fights on routes where you need HMs to get to them) but if you could either knock them out or for gym battles box them it can affect the outcome. And the Krabby numbers to me looks like this fight could've been harder if krabby wasn't a target for whirlwind. And the counterpoint of you took damage balancing it out doesn't fly here because Tropius has roost. The attack drop was far more detrimental.
27:20 I didn't know you could play as Missingno. Lol
How about Pokemon Gold with only Janine's team? It's like your Koga run, but we get to see if the father's or the daughter's team is superior.
I remember back when oras was about to come out, my friends and I made hoenn teams and fought in a little tournament. We are not competitive players, but I swept everyone with a Tropius that had Dragon Dance, Roost, Leaf Blade, and Fly, also holding a sitrus berry with harvest. It was real fun.
I always forget Red's Pikachu has Light Ball in HG/SS till the rat suddenly hits you like a truck
Glad I'm not the only one that has the pixalation problem when emulating HGSS.
It looks like Tropius gets a lot of literal cool moves by level up too!
Very good video !
In your video you use Tropius, but in the video description you says you use Regigigas ??????
So, Tropius definitely struggles in Johto/Unova runs because of being a grass type, both of those regions are not kind to the grass type as a whole.
Sinnoh wants to be unkind to them because of Snowpoint city and Aaron/Flint from the E4, but the rest of the region is fine.
I get broken graphics too... I usually just save, quit and start up again. It works
I'd love to see a Carnivine-only run. Nobody gives a shit about Carnivine.
I used it on my first gen 4 run because ive always loved venus flytraps. Such a goofy mon
13:03 I wonder if you considered using a Cherri berry in this fight.
well now you got a reason for more runs with this pokemon!
Great video! Just wanted to inform you(in case the comments section hasn't yet) that Feraligatr would probably be more difficult than Typhlosion by the endgame
Edit: You also were underusing Roost in a bunch of the fights, particularly at
Clair
Finally a Tropius run!! ❤
If TV Tropius had had Chlorofyll they might have been able to do some more damage to Red if you could set up sun, at least until Charizard enters the field.
But with a Sun Moveset of Sunny Day, Solar Beam, Synthesis and maybe Hidden Power Rock maaaaaaybe there could've been a win?
I actually used them on my team way back in pokemon sapphire
Any gen with Pokemon starting M B or D, excluding legendary, pseudo and mythical.
Or, any gen with moves beginning with M D or B.
Also, Tropius is a personal favourite
30+min long challenge?!? That means either it was a doozy and/or Editor MDB has a bunch to tell us!
Edit: Back in 2003 in my first ever playthough of sapphire I had a tropius!
I was hoping for sunny beam solar power strats but then I remembered that many major fights have fire types and was disappointed. Oh well, maybe in a different game.
It’s criminal how bad Tropius is. Game Freak dropped the ball so hard with it
Tropius has actually gotten somewhat usable nowadays as a stalker in recent gens with the move set of leech seed, substitute, air slash and giga drain
Pokemon Platinum with one Charmander
Sapphire with only fire types (starter Vulpix)
A video about my favorite banana Dinosaur. I approve.
I had a Tropius in my second playthrough of Ruby. Was fun when paired with Groudon.
man was like "tropius? thats a strong pokemon what do you mean?" th he showed the base stats
WHY DOES THAT THING HAVE 460!? ITS A GIANT FULLY EVOLVED FREAKING DINOSAUR
I had Tropius during my first Ruby playthrough since it's so weird looking (positive), it was awful. Never used it in HG/SS and wouldn't want to.
Been a steady mix of heart gold, red, and another singular run. Can we get some emerald, crystal, and Platinum runs? I get doing exclusives and what not but doing exclusives in an all inclusive game also give challenges. Plus rom hacks. Just giving some ideas 🤷
Yk I think the champion would’ve gone better if you had a held Cheri berry to avoid the paralysis from Dragonite
Also, couldn't Sunny Day help you for the Red fight, if you manage to set it up somehow ? Removing Hail, and allowing you to use Solarbeam (and Chlorophyl if you had this ability)
How about HGSS with cherrim only?
U-Turn is type neutral against Tropius, not super effective. Flying resists it because that is a Bug move.
Tropius is quite the let down.
Too slow, unless the sun is up. And it's Special isn't really all that high to fire off threatening solarbeams and it's bulk is something to be desired.
Top of my recommended page, let's go! Uhh also, there wasn't any mention of the fossil, if you wouldn't mind just replying with that detail... I'll add it to the official record, thank you.
Yay, Tropius is my favourite Pokemon! ^^
I know it's too late now, but I was wondering if you might be able to get past Red's Pikachu with more health by spamming Roost and letting it take itself out with Volt Tackle recoil.
Probably won't make the fight winnable, but it's just an idea I had.
Long time viewer, medium-level commenter here. Have you ever considered doing a series on Mega Man X?
Question: why didn’t you utilize Tropius’ ability? Sunny Day activates Solar power letting you raise your SP. Atk. Combine with solar beam/ magical leaf, roost/ Giga drain, and natural gift (fire)/ return. You could have done a better play through.
4:28 How? You’re also flying, that should make the move neutral. Did something mess up?
I've not watched these videos in a while... and all I can say after such a long break is
...
You would have had such an easier time in this run if you went with a Special Attacking / mixed moveset
Air slash would have provided some clutch flinches with slower opponents like Muk and Magical Leaf would have bypassed the Accuracy issue.
And that's just for the early game.
Late game you'd get access to Giga Drain (a stronger Grass type move) and maybe even Natural Gift for some out of the box strategies (a physical move, yes, but it could help for things like Dragonite or even Red's Charizard or Snorlax)
that ans using at least some vitamins... just saying.
I love his neck sticking out.
A bit of a shame for the red fight, honestly if u can get some ev reducing berries to reset for some unneeded evs for speed and maybe hp, u could just run a set like
Roost, return, swords dance and sunny day
U do have to run chlorophyll for the extra speed boost in the sun to maybe outspeed charizard if not +6 return should demonlish Red
For the Red fight, would using roost not help by dropping the flying type or would Blizzard still be 4 times effective? No sure myself but maybe it's possible!
Can you beat Pokémon platinum with a spoink named boingo?
Tropius is my favourite bananatype.
In terms of damage u would've gotten more using return over body slam though body slam can't paralyze
I never had this visual glitch issue on melonds emu, problem is that emulator is slower.
I Ruby, I LOVED my 1st run Tropius. Really needs to get some more love! Give it the Slowbro and Girraferig treatment!
It definitely needs a new form/evo
You should do some playthroughs of Crystal Legacy and Yellow legacy from TheSmithPlays!! They're definitely the best versions of their gens that still feel like their gens.
Tropius just makes me sad. A plant brontosaurus with leaf wings is the kind of thing that should be on the front of the box and be an all-conquering badass of a pokemon. Instead it's mid at best. It's one of the biggest dropped balls Game Freak has ever committed.
I used one as a fly slave on my first platinum run, but on heart gold, no (might have been the other way around my first time owning a tropeus was like 11 years ago)
Magical leaf is special and bypasses accuracy checks, plus it's 5 base power stronger than razor leaf and it uses Tropius's slightly better sp.atk stat (although yours had a ln attack boosting nature, so that might not be relevant here). My point is: magnemite and steelix are way bulkier on the physical side, so the steel gym would probably have been 10x easier with magical leaf over razor leaf. Why did you stick with razor leaf?! 😅
Can you defeat Emerald with only one Bulbasaur?
Ice only resists itself for some reason.
I love tropius, i had him on my team in ruby
Black with one zorua
Could be fun. But would it be ok to have a hm Mon to make use of the illusion ability as strategy for fights
@@SKMedia252 does illusion do anything against the ai?
@@SsjRedneck Yes they are fooled by it. They also never learn either.
Maybe two Zorua? 🤔
Once you go Black,
Zorua's got your back
😎
Why didn’t you replace razor leaf with Giga drain? It does 5 more damage and you get a lot of health back
Requesting Pokémon RBYFRLG with Ash Ketchum’s Team (Three Starters, Pikachu, Butterfree, Mankey) Unevolved.
Pokémon any Gen with rng damage moves (psywave, magnitude, fury cutter, double slap, double kick, etc)
Pokémon HGSS with just sweet scent and head butt tree Pokémon
Pokémon any Gen with just the first 6 Pokémon you come across in any route (you can swap out after every gym leader)
Pokémon any Gen but you can only use standard poke balls to catch Pokémon.
Or Pokémon BW2 with only using AB’s Pokémon you find in the wild.
11 minutes ago! I think that considering it's HeartGold, MDB may struggle a bit, but I reckon he could beat the Pokémon League.
Can you stream Pokémon Colosseum please? I can’t be the only one who’d want to see it!
Do one with magmar, its my favourite Pokemon
Another request for X/Y with only gift Pokemon
You should try to start over all together every time you die 🤣🤔
I won't hold it against you for accidentally thinking ice type wasn't absolutely trash defensively. It *should* resist grass, and possibly bug and/or water and/or electric. It should also be super effective against rock and neutral to ground (since freezing a rock causes dissolved water in it to expand and shatter it, while freezing the ground makes it even tougher than normal. Literally water and steel are more vulnerable to cold than ground is IRL).
Royal pear
Growth was the best move for tropious. Pretty much a calm mind for attack and sp atk. That would have been amazing against steelix
"Pretty much work up but better in the sun" fixed that for you
