Sorry to see all the extra cost and time you spent learning on this conversion. I did my 96 k3500 swap 6yrs ago and had similar problems but not nearly as bad. For anyone who wants to build a truck like this. You dont need a body lift!!!! There are bolt on aftermarket motor mount adapters that sit the engine low and use the stock dodge diesel isolator. A stock dodge 2nd gen intercooler and radiator will fit without having zip tying your grill, looks better, performs better, and a fraction of the price. A nv5600 does not lower your rpm at hwy Cruze speed. It only adds an extra gear shortening the gap between i believe 3&4...but dont quote me...point being 6th gear is the same gear ratio as 5th on the nv4500, so save the money and use the nv4500! Save yourself some hassle and buy a nv4500 purpose built, mine is all dodge except tail bolts directly to the chevy transfer case....its cheaper that way as it uses all stock dodge bellhousing, clutches, flywheel, starter, ect...stock chevy ujoints and only have to lengthen the transfercase shift linkage a little, most any decent trans shop can build it.
Thanks for the info. Ive decided to do this. I'm looking for a 99 K2500 or 3500 for the truck and either a Dodge truck, or just a 5.9 12v engine. Do the dodge 12v trucks come with the tranny you are recommending? At first I was thinking it would be too complicated, but maybe it's not as bad as I thought with adapter kits and such.
Ive watched this series of videos about 4 times over. I really want to do a swap in my truck but need to save for a while to do it right the first time. these will probably be the most useful vids on the swap i will find. thank you so much Devin!
It was allot of work and about $8,000. If you have a allot of time and money it would be good. Make use you get a. 94-98 5.9 cummins. Make sure you fix the killer dowel pin on the timing cover.
No it all worked out well thanks to my 9 years + years of being in the U.S. Navy and all of my technical training, I think she came out great :). She pulled 22,000lbs no problem!
My first question is...did you watch all of my videos?? In several of my videos I explain how the G360 does not work in 4x4 Chevys because the fork for the throw-out-bearing was hitting the front drive differential. If you have rear wheel drive only than it's no problem. I wanted to keep my 4x4 so I switched to a NV4500 and With a Ford NP205 driver side drop transfer case and with an oversized fly wheel and Clutch. At about 70MPH I was at about 2100RPM's. If I had more money I would of went with the NV5600 to I could run at 70 @ 1800 rpm's. I did not post these videos to try and one up anyone it was only to help because their was little to nothing on TH-cam offered on this specific conversion.
Yes i'm looking for info on this swap, your portfolio would be great if still available, thanks for posting this, the list of parts and places to get them complete the magic, please let me know how to get it
Very nice build!! Unless you have done one of these conversions, you have no idea the little things that come up and haunt you. Yes it was expensive but very very cool. Good job!!!
Looks like you spent at least a grand in zipties. Totally kidding, I love what you did. Cummins in anything is awesome. Mad respect for the work that went into this project. Also Thank you for your service!
I really enjoyed watching your videos on this conversion. I like how you explained everything and covered areas that to make the conversion easier for others. The conversion looks amazing and you did a great job.
Nice machine you got there. Love how you've organized it under the bonnet. I looking to do this kind of conversion myself, but in a 1996 Nissan Patrol y60 LWB. Theses videos are really gonna help me on the Cummins. :D
I figured it all out went to oreileys and bought universal one. Engine is built and done and i just built my turbo now i need sensor adapters for gm oil and temp and figure out how to wire up grid heater to a push button..thnks i mentioned your channel in my build vids sry if i mispronounced ur username
Love your conversion love your attitude im not a catalog shopper thats what I call it I do a little homework and so much stuff interchanges sorry to here u have to sell it I have alot of toys myself there part of u but thanks for the video and thanks for your service in the navy my god sons going in soon im very proud of him anyway good luck and god bless
I know this is old. But for guys that watch this in the future. The final drive ratio between the NV4500 and NV5600 is basically the same (.075 or .073). At 75mph with 275/75 R16 tires you are turning 2081 RPM for the .75 ratio 2026 RPM for the .73 ratio That is only a 55 RPM reduction. The NV5600 was introduced to narrow the wide 2-3 gear split in the NV4500. Even the G56 has the same final ratio of .74. Want a real reduction? Look towards the auto's. 46,47,48RE is .69. Money burning a hole in your pocket? Allison 6 speed is .62.
Awesome work man! I was wondering if your offer of sharing your swap info is still available? I’d certainly be interested! Let me know either way, thank you!
Good luck bro!! Let me know how she does. Don't worry about the grid heater these cummins have more than enough psi to atomize the fuel. But I hooked mine right up to the glow plug controller from the Chevy.
Doyle, 84 would be a good choice because you will have tons of room compared to a 98. If you have 4x4 in the 84 then you will need to do a body life because the 5.9 is tall. Your motor mounts will need to be custom made and a company in MT called Auto World can make them for you and they are good. Do not upgrade your injection pump to the P7100 because the conversion cost $2,500. You can turn up the VE pump to 450HP safely. You will need to buy bigger injectors. iIf you have less than 150,000 on
I'm doing this swap now. No body lift for me. And that is not where you want your egt probe. You want it in your exhaust manifold. I'm using a ford powerstroke zf5 and bw1356 transfer case. Gonna do my best not to cut the grille up like that too. I'm using the factory 2nd Gen intercooler, rad, and ac condenser.
The only thing you need to cut up is the radiator support usin second GEN rad n intercooler.. If ur using the Chevy a/c compressor u need either a body lift or cowl hood to clear a/c but that depends what brackets you use... Using the auto world brackets like he did the body lift is needed or cowl hood
The 5.9 then don't rebuild her unless she was mistreated. Replace the oil cooler, crank dampener, and head gasket. Also only put an OE Dodge/ Cummins thermostat in her otherwise she will run 215 not 190. Replace the valve steams seals if you can too. It gets expensive quick after all the small stuff adds up. Just use your dodge radiator and Intercooler. The driveshaft will have to be professionally
The 6.5 was taken from the Chevy big block and turned into a Diesel engine. The 6.5 had major cooling issues due to small cooling ports in the heads and down around the cylinder walls. GM came up with dual thermostat housing cooling but still the engines overheated and died. The 6.5 were never designed to tow heavy loads, max towing is around 6500lbs. For a 1Ton Dually that’s nothing. If you are not towing and just cruising it’s an ok engine. The 5.9 was designed for heavy loads, high torque, and I towed 24,000lbs with no over heating issues at all. The 5.9 is considered to be the greatest midsize duty engine of its class. Used in numerous applications and uses. If you follow all the 5.9 pages on FB you will understand why everyone loves them. The reliability and bag for your buck is so worth it.
@@Blazerxxxx thanks for sharing those flaws, I never knew what it was specifically on the 6.5l, just knew its not known for power. I have a 96 k3500 ambulance that I bought with 102k miles. I'm building the box to live out of, but doing a lot of upgrades to the stock 6.5 to try and help reliability when in the mountains. There's a few upgrades that will help but if you're towing which I won't be, I guess it def makes sense to do that swap. Thx again for sharing
@@ambikesandboards Your welcome, yes don’t sink any more money into the 6.5 Engine. My dad and I did. Bought oversized radiator, new HO water pump, oversized exhaust, dual thermostat housing, new Heads that was suppose to be better with bigger ports, new fuel injectors, manual waist gate controller. And it still over heated towing a 8,000 5th wheel camper. Even took it to the weigh scale. So cut our losses and did the swap and never had to look back. I was shocked by the difference. Will be the last engine you buy the 5.9 that is. Good luck to you!
Thanks for posting info and videos on your swap. I put a 12 valve rotary pump in my 84 Chevy M1028 CUCV back in 2007. I used a NV4500 out of a 96 Dodge Cummins (29 Spline output shaft), and a NP205 that was behind 88-93 Dodge Cummins 5-speed (29 spline input) as I needed a passenger side drop. The truck is a beast and has served me well, but I've been itching to put this engine/tranny in something that has better ride quality and some creature comforts like A/C and a radio. I've been going back and forth trying to choose between a Ford Super Duty or a Chevy 3500 dually. Your videos answered most of the questions I had concerning a Chevy 3500 swap but I still have two questions: Is your NV4500 a Dodge Cummins specific transmission (29 spline output shaft)? What year, make, model truck did your NP205 come out of? Thanks again for the info you posted.
Alrighty ill do tht then with the grid heater as it does get a lil chilly up here in michigan...waiting on flywheel bolts then the cummins is ready to fire on stand kinda excited after i fully rebuilt her myself:)
Only three kids? As long as you've got 6 seats, you should be good to fit everyone just fine in this truck. We never stopped using my dad's truck for family trips until my youngest sister (5th kid in my family) was born. Even then my sisters and me would all squish in the truck. I do like my space, though. It is the only thing I like about my mom's Explorer, I get the backseat all to myself. They just need to make eight-seater trucks. I'll tell ya, if I ever had to buy a family car, I'd get a Ford Excursion 7.3 PSD or swap a 4BT or 12V into a Suburban.
The NV5600 has a 6th gear. The NV4500 only has 5 gears. So it helps drop the RPM's considerably down to about 1800rpm's. First do your homework before you post inaccurate information. The NV5600 with the NP205 set up is considered to be one of the best set ups if you want all manual. It was allot of fun completing this project!
the gear ratio difference is nv5600 73.1 nv4500 75.1 so its barely noticeable i have both trans in trucks with same gears in the rear end and it only drops about 100 rpm at 70 mph with the nv5600 the main difference is like greg said the gears are evenly spaced so you dont get the big rpm drop from 3rd to 4th you do with a nv4500
It's cool man my last name gets mispronounced all the time. So to get your oil pressure switch working keep your GM one and go to ace or lowes and get the brass fittings to make an elbow 90 degrees. On the block should be two ports on the lower front driver side to hook into. I used the fwd most one for the oil supply to the fuel injection pump. The second one I used only for the oil pressure switch. Do not make a tee with one port you will get false reading.
What did use for clutch pedal master cylinder and slave cylinder and for the starter? Were they all dodge? Ive got a 1995 1ton crew cab dually with a 6.5 in it now and im tgi king of going with the 5.9 nv4500 and np205 i want to go all mechanical as well i like your set up!
I hate the bad rap people give the 6.5 Detroit's. They are solid motors if you iron out all the engineering mistakes that GM made. Injectors are dirt cheap compared to a Cummins. Kudos to you for doing such a conversion... just kinda senseless drop that much money. Could've bought a duramax for a bit more. Good luck
I've done my 87 check out my vids but what xfer case did you use out of what an what year ? I wanna do a newer truck , an you should have said a getrag won't work on IFS FRONT WHEELS DRIVE TRUCKS
To hook up the throttle cable you will need to go to the auto parts store and buy the after market adjustable cable. You can cut it down. do you have the whole recoil spring hooked up all ready?
I have a 1984 k10 2500 and I want to put a 5.9l Cummins in it. Would you mind sending me a portfolio on how you did your truck just so I can have an idea. Thanks. -Jesus Barron
Sorry for the late reply i'm in the military and just got off Recruiting and I now have down time. If you go to my facebook page you can see all my pictures and steps on how I did it. "devinjaegle84"
Should have left the rotary pump and went with a hy35w turbo. Get that thremocouple as close as u can to the back of the turbo...It reading cold that far back.
how interesting that you said you just moved so your short of money now in the navy i always made money with a dity move of course i had my own truck and trailer i was a sea going carrier based AO1 78 to 98
Yeah we had a lot of bills and we made bad financial decisions and My move paperwork was lost by the Navy and I lost out on 4K :(. I'm a MN1 Minemen. We worked along side of you guys building our underwater mine. 62, 63, 65's. Thank you for your service.
oh i know quite well which mines plus the dst's lol i was only in one squadron and one AIMD and they were both shore tours the rest of my time was divided between 4 carriers when i left my sea counter was 14 plus
Hey devinjaegle84 nice truck and nice conversion sucks u had to sell it but u gotta do what u gotta do for your family. I have a 2000 chevy c/k 3500 4x4 1 ton dually with 7.4 v8 gas with nv3500 and I wanted to do the 5.9 cummins swap and was wondering how do I get the portfolio from u for the conversion?? Thanks a lot great videos

It's all good man I understand. I'm not doing it anytime soon. Probably going to be about 2 in half years before I get the time and money to do it. Jus trying to get all the info and research I can before the time comes and maybe get some smalls things together till it's time. Thanks for your service. Now dumb question lol what's your Facebook name?? Thanks man
I'm actually in the process of putting one together. I'll let you guys know when it's done. maybe a few months but i'll be here on youtube alot more now that I have time.
i have same truck just a 94 2wd i am putting a 93 cummings in it. i have my motor and transmission. i went with a nv4500, my question is what did you do to make clutch work. did you ise chevy master cylinder and dodge slave cylinder. if so any trouble hooking the line up
Hey, I went through summit racing and had to order a universal for Chevy with the steel braid extra length hose. Also make sure the slave and master cylinder push Rod are both adjustable. The one from the local auto parts store come with a pre cut length and no adjustable Rod. I had to take mine back. Is this a trans out of a Chevy or a dodge? My 1998 was automatic and I had to put the peddle, master and slave cylinder all in myself. I went to a local junk yard and found a Chevy with a stick. Call up Kentucky clutch and buy the oversized fly wheel and clutch combo. Kevlar/ceramic kit. Well worth it. It needs it because of the extra Torque from the 5.9 Cummins. Pretty much not have to replace it for sometime. m.summitracing.com/parts/add-716116 try this link on summit. I believe this was the one I got.
Mitchell Mc, we just completed our conversion. Put a "93 12v Cummins into a "94 Chevy Dually. Everything works great except the wiring. When we turn on the headlights or press the brake peddle, the turn signals stop working. So do the power door locks and power windows and dash gauges. Still working on that.
I'd like to have a list of parts, whereand who you got them from and how much they cost you. No need for any info on trans or transfer ca as I have done alot of work related to that.

how much for your portfolio to have it shipped to California??? I going to buy a 91 1st gen dodge here soon and want take the engine like you did and I have the same truck as you but 2500 long bed

One thing to keep in mind about the 24V is that it is electronic so it might be harder to work on. I looked at doing a Cummins swap on my 03 F350, and Diesel Conversion Specialists recommended to go with an 06 or newer.
Using the Chevy a/c compressor when using The brackets supplied from auto world either u need a body lift or a cowl hood.. If ur not running a/c you have nothing to worry about
I have the same truck and am working on the same conversion. I am curious about your PS pump setup - I saw the other video about using the Dodge pump and the GM cover. How has that been working? Next question - Without a vacuum pump, how does your HVAC work?
I have a 96 k3500 with a cummins. 6yrs on the swap. Buy the 4bt power steering pump (its non vacuum) easily found on ebay (if you need the hydro boost) bolts right on , plug and play with the chevy hydro brakes. On my 96 i dont need the vacuum for the a/c and it is fully functional.
Do you still have any copies of that portfolio? I am considering doing this to a 2000-2006 1500.I would love to crank out out some diesel. Priced the 2500's they're just really too big of a truck, and more money than I want to spend.

Your videos answered most of the questions I had concerning a Chevy 3500 swap but I still have two questions: Is your NV4500 a Dodge Cummins specific transmission (29 spline output shaft)? What year, make, model truck did your NP205 come out of? Thanks again for the info you posted.
I used the fwd one for inj pump/vaccum pump as well and second for oil
Alrighty ill do tht then with the grid heater as it does get a lil chilly up here in michigan...waiting on flywheel bolts then the cummins is ready to fire on stand kinda excited after i fully rebuilt her myself:)
Done so it does not come apart and kill someone you know? If you have anymore questions let me know. Good luck!
Where did you get the motor mounts for again?
Only three kids? As long as you've got 6 seats, you should be good to fit everyone just fine in this truck. We never stopped using my dad's truck for family trips until my youngest sister (5th kid in my family) was born. Even then my sisters and me would all squish in the truck. I do like my space, though. It is the only thing I like about my mom's Explorer, I get the backseat all to myself. They just need to make eight-seater trucks. I'll tell ya, if I ever had to buy a family car, I'd get a Ford Excursion 7.3 PSD or swap a 4BT or 12V into a Suburban.
I would like to purchase the portfolio on your truck build.
Great video man was wondering how can I get a portfolio ??? Take care and thanks for your services have a nice one
Porque no le pusieron la transmision de ella que viene con la doble para que quedara mas original
Nice job 👏 I would do that but in California it would be impossible with that style motor can't put older motors in our trucks with the smog here
Could you get me a link to where you got the bracket for the compressor?
Can you post a video of what the truck looks like with the 3 inch body lift?
Ty brother !
Good luck
That's crazy talk !!! Them gm v8 don't compare to any Cummins!!! The 4bt makes better power than a 6.5 turbo
Just as shitty as the old 350 diesel in the old Riviera and odd and caddy!!! Junk junk junk
The 6.5 is legendary for problems!!
could you please add a link to where you got the mount for the ac
I've done my 87 check out my vids but what xfer case did you use out of what an what year ? I wanna do a newer truck , an you should have said a getrag won't work on IFS FRONT WHEELS DRIVE TRUCKS
very nice bro good job. ....
If you had the option to put a first or second gen Cummins in a 97 K 3500 Dually what would you choose??
To hook up the throttle cable you will need to go to the auto parts store and buy the after market adjustable cable. You can cut it down. do you have the whole recoil spring hooked up all ready?
I WONT TO DO THE SWAP IN TO A 84 CHEVY OUT OF A 93 DODGE CANE YOU GIVE POINTERS ON HOW TO DO THE SWAP THANKS
Do you think it would be easier and cheaper 2 just drop the Chevy body on a Cummins frame?
Why didn’t the getrag 360 work?
Thank you for your service
Thank you for your support!
I have a 1984 k10 2500 and I want to put a 5.9l Cummins in it. Would you mind sending me a portfolio on how you did your truck just so I can have an idea. Thanks. -Jesus Barron
That same spectra air filter ruined my engine sucked in metal piece. Was a 92 chevy 6.5 bulletproofed with 58k miles and hx35 turbo...
I have a 94 K3500. I would like to do this but want 4wd. This is a huge job. Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a different truck?
TH400 with cummin 6bt is good? work fine?
Where you get the ac bracket
Need some help with the wiring on a 1996 cummins into a 1985 chevy dually thanks for the help
Sorry for the late reply i'm in the military and just got off Recruiting and I now have down time. If you go to my facebook page you can see all my pictures and steps on how I did it. "devinjaegle84"
Do you still have the truck (Lloyd)
10,000 pound trailer on 8 bolts?

It's all good man I understand. I'm not doing it anytime soon. Probably going to be about 2 in half years before I get the time and money to do it. Jus trying to get all the info and research I can before the time comes and maybe get some smalls things together till it's time. Thanks for your service. Now dumb question lol what's your Facebook name?? Thanks man
I'm actually in the process of putting one together. I'll let you guys know when it's done. maybe a few months but i'll be here on youtube alot more now that I have time.
Nice work and hopefully ya won't sell the truck lol!
Did you do anything special for the speedometer
i have same truck just a 94 2wd i am putting a 93 cummings in it. i have my motor and transmission. i went with a nv4500, my question is what did you do to make clutch work. did you ise chevy master cylinder and dodge slave cylinder. if so any trouble hooking the line up
Hey, I went through summit racing and had to order a universal for Chevy with the steel braid extra length hose.
I am a veteran so thank you for your service. You mentioned about selling the truck. How much are you asking for it?
I'd like to have a list of parts, whereand who you got them from and how much they cost you.
No need for any info on trans or transfer ca as I have done alot of work related to that.
Sorry for the late reply i'm in the military and just got off Recruiting and I now have down time. If you go to my facebook page you can see all my pictures and steps on how I did it.

Sorry for the late reply i'm in the military and just got off Recruiting and I now have down time. If you go to my facebook page you can see all my pictures and steps on how I did it. "devinjaegle84"
How is she holding up?
Is the offer to get a copy of the portfolio still possible?
Really liked the truck and the video. How was the power steering pump with the hydroboost . Can you post more on that.
GREAT JOB!
Thank you! It was a lot of hard work, research, and many man hours. But I got her done and very proud.
I have 98 c3500 crew cab long bed but single rear wheel with a 5.7 I want to put in a 5.9 but will it be expensive and complicated ? Thanks for your service !
Do you still have the build instructions? And if so I would gladly buy them off of you.

Do you still have that build sheet available
How’s the speedo work
I wanna put a 2004 cummins into my 1996 Chevy 3500 truck.. Would like to get some information from you..
Sorry for the late reply i'm in the military and just got off Recruiting and I now have down time. If you go to my facebook page you can see all my pictures and steps on how I did it.
One thing to keep in mind about the 24V is that it is electronic so it might be harder to work on. I looked at doing a Cummins swap on my 03 F350, and Diesel Conversion Specialists recommended to go with an 06 or newer.
I would like to by that information on the build you talked about?
What part of the motor required the body lift? I have a '97 3500 2wd. I really don't want to mess with a body lift just for a swap.
@@cn8065 Already did. :) seems to work great
Do you still have any copies of that portfolio? I am considering doing this to a 2000-2006 1500.I would love to crank out out some diesel. Priced the 2500's they're just really too big of a truck, and more money than I want to spend.
