  • We've been getting these questions a lot lately: What will a diesel conversion cost, and can you do the diesel swap?
    Why it's $10k:
    - 6BT is ~$2000 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - 4BT is ~$3500 + $1500 for basic rebuild (head, pistons, rings & bearings).
    - Adapter plate, flywheel and starter is ~$2000.
    - Shift controller is ~$600. kit.com/debossg...
    - Alignment fluids, fittings, hoses, machining is ~$500.
    - DG shop rate is $65/hr at an estimate of 70 hours.
    - Don't forget shipping + taxes!

Funny that I'm watching this considering I'm about to swap a John Deere 4045T into my 2005 F150. It's also getting a G56 manual and axles and suspension from an F350. Transmission and transfer case been freshly rebuilt, motor is brand new and has some extra parts to put some pep in her step, axles also rebuilt. Tearing the truck apart completely and rebuilding everything so every square inch of the truck will be in pristine condition.

But I know I'll never have the resources to accomplish it. But I love these videos and I love watching and learning. Who knows, maybe getting to see how it's done will help me learn down the road and do something cool too.

      @OnlyTheEd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Your main areas (probably) will be the electrical connections and the driveshaft changes/modification. (Please note Johnson's Gee-rage and "Todd Booke's Bronco swap).......His has the 4BT and a 5 speed (m5odr2, I think).....Jimmy (Johnson's Gee-rage) has a 1982 F150 4BT with the m5odr2....he's been building it for perhaps 2 years. His cash outlay has topped $6K, because he's had some issues and other modifications/ additions. He has done most of his own build except the driveshaft modification, and had help rebuilding the m5odr2. Otherwise, Rich is your man.....The $$$ I speak of is US, of course....Canadian is a different exchange rate. Oh yeah.....also the engine mounts/pads/whatever are going to cause grief.......And oil pan location, maybe....

Unfortunately, these Toyota swaps aren't as plug and play as you would think, especially if it has electronics. I found that the wiring harness for the diesel is for a right hand drive truck, so it has to be rebuilt. Also, the gauges don't transfer either, from what I have found. Look up dieseltoys on forums. You will find pretty much everything you will need from those guys. I haven't done the swap yet, so I all I know is what I have read. I could be wrong though. I do know that you would be better off with a half cut which will have everything you will need.

Hey Mr.Deboss so I Have a 98 K1500 5.7 Vortec Extended Cab 3 door Silverado I recently Purchased it from a older Gentleman who had bought it brand new and had fallen ill and needed the money. The engine and tranny are all original. He had kept it in tip top shape with Transmission Fluid Flushes and Filter changes every 35-40k miles and Oil changes every 2500 Miles Wix and Kn filters were his go too he cleaned it up and sprayed off the snow in the wintertime so there isn’t a single spot of rust on the fenders as most fall victim too aswell as the vehicle does not burn a single drop of oil and has had all the gaskets replaced routinely. My question is I’m looking at doing a 6.5 or 6.2 Detroit Diesel swap or possibly buying a baby duramax crate engine and or just installing a 6.6 or possibly even a 5.9 or smaller cummins engine into it I just would like to get your thoughts on it!

In the US (not Canada) it is illegal to swap a diesel into a vehicle that was never produced as a diesel. That being said that is a federal crime, and most states do not care. The vehicle should pass state inspections most of the time. The only time you will have any issue is if you go to a national park, or US facility where federal law enforcement present, and mainly if they decide to inspect your vehicle. Which if they do, you will be arrested, charged with a felony, your vehicle will be impounded, and most likely destroyed ASAP!

The 8.1 in the 03 is getting some major miles on it, close to 200k miles, not kilos. Been thinking about doing the swap because the 8.1 doesn't have much after market support for goodies. I would like to keep the Allison, but not sure about mounting it to the cummins, if it fits or someone makes an adapter for it, it's a bitch'n trany.

Lily Smith : The GM gas 8.1L is/was a terrible fuel pig. A Cummins turbo diesel 5.9L or 6.7L would be a huge improvement, and worthwhile swap so long as the truck is still decent. Keeping the Allison is not that difficult, you'll just have to get a machine shop fabricate an adapter plate for the bell housing. Seems like there may also be something available from the medium-duty truck market, but I don't know for sure.

Our gas around here averages around $2.50/gal.
Sales tax is $0.07. So, $10700.
    That's 4280 gallons.
I got an 18 gallon tank.
My 5.0 averages around 12 mpg.
I know that's shitty... but, ANYWAYS...
That ends up being 54688.89 miles.
Diesel `round here is like $3.30.
    $59.4/ tank
    30 mpg = 540 mi/tank
    $10700 = 3242.42 tank fulls.
    3242.42*30 = 97272.73 miles
So the gasser is 0.5622222336448599 as good as the diesel.
It pays for itself in about a year or so.

I got a 1994 ford f350 someone 12v cummins swapped and it's been a absolute nightmare. I currently can't get the altinator to charge. New altinator new battery just put in a transpo regulator still not charging. Wiring is a hack job on this truck. I don't know what wire to look for on the ford to tell the altinator to charge. I ran new battery cable to the altinator as well as a new ground I am at a loss

Fairly mechanically inclined but not traditionally trained Brand new to trucks intermediate experience with small engines (sleds) and some experience with field repairs on heavy equipment.

I would really like to know if a 6.2l diesel is worth it. I really want to because it's affordable and one of the easier things to swap in to a square body. I just don't know if it is worth doing. I know they are gutless and have average torque. Also is NA or turbo better for the 6.2. or start with an NA and make it turbo.
