Yeah, I just uploaded some more. I'm going to make a last video explaining everything in detail of what I did. It took me a year and a half due to funding but it was not cheap. Finding parts was hard and going to cummins was expensive but worth it. It was great to finally see her start up!
I pulled a 13k ish trl behind my 97 2500 didnt have heat issue but later got a bad hole in oil cooler line didnt know it going down the road gauges read good oil press but now something bad happen dont know for sure yet. If cummins swap wasnt so expesive I'd love to do it
If you keep following my posts you will see that the G360 did not work/fit in a 4x4. Both Trans are Heavy Duty but parts for the NV4500 are easier to get/find. Before doing the overhaul follow all post.
When I finished my truck I ended up with 5.9 Cummings with p7100 injection pump. NV4500 w/NP205 transfer case. 900HP Kevlar/Ceramic oversized clutch. So yes it was not 25,000LBS, it was actually 23,000lbs I had total weighted down and got about 12MPG. 😄.
I have a 97 K3500 6.5 L w NV4500 & thinking about doing this swap. Does the body lift have to be done to fit? Been planning to do a 2" body lift anyway but worried about towing clearances with high lift
@@darylsparks-sparksautomoti6066 Yes it has to be done and make sure you have a couple of others there to help. But yes and it’s because the 5.9 is much taller to get in. I’m going to be putting in a 5.9 in a 1994 K3500 soon for my dad once we get set up. This time I’m going to go into more detail and try and do better editing.
Can you tell me where you got the Motor Mounts - doing a 1992 C3500 Swap - with a 1953 Cab - As mentioned in your video Auto World - just messaged them - will be watching your build a few times as we put this together.
Need advice from anyone that know about these conversions. I own a 1996, 2500, 6.5TD suburban. I would love to convert to the Cummins diesel and keep my auto transmission. Can it be done?
zekeil Thank you for info. Now if I can find someone to swap my 6.5 Chev diesel for a 6BT Cummins at an affordable price, I will do it. So far the people I find want way too much for that conversion.
I have a 98 c3500 long bed crew cab too but not a dually and it has a 5.7 what do you think about putting in a 5.9 do you think it'll be a lot of trouble ?
With the 5.9................you may be able to pull 125,000 LBS...........Will take a couple modifications............justhes or TheDieselStop may show you how.
I've watched a few of these Cummins swaps, Funny how you go to so much trouble ( & expense) putting a real diesel from a Dodge into your Chevy/Ford/GMC pick ups. If you have a Suburban or a Ford Expedition it might be worthwhile, for a pick up? dump it & get a Dodge or a Ram.
Engine might have been out of a Dodge but it's not a Dodge engine ....... It's a Cummins ...... And even in Dodge trucks the 5.9 was shoehorned and wedged in....... At least gm actually desinged their own medium duty deisel ..... which the 6.2 and 6.5 are actually good engines .... When you go through them and correct the manufactered weak links....... I myself prefer Cummins engines whether it be in a semi a tractor or pickup but gm knows how to make a damn fine deisel engine .... Especially the old 2 strokes.... The series 60 used in alot of kenworths is a damn good engine too......... The trucks I've seen a Cummins 5.9 fit in ..... Are the old Chevy square bodies that came with the 292 inline six.... And the 40s and 50s trucks the Cummins b series which is based off the ONAN Cummins 6AT from the 60s and 70s was actually intended to be a direct swap for a Chevy or gm inline six.... The 6AT was like a 95 to 120 hp engine don't remember the displacement it had....... I want a 5.9 in my 91k3500.... But the engine weighs close to 1000lbs ........... Where the 6.5 weighs the same as the 350 that's already in it ......... Plus it's basically a direct swap..... I'm gunna build a 6.5 ditch the emissions BS Relocate the PMD .... ARP studs..... Mechanical waste gate Etc ..... And back it with the Muncie 465 with a 2 speed auxiliary trans so I can split gears giving me 8 forward gears and 2 reverse........ The problem with any engine being able to pull is largly due to the trans behind it ....... The ratios in the 4 and 5 speeds are generally wide ratio.... Especially between 3rd and 4th so the engine usually bogs down and has to climb it's way back up...... With the 2 speed aux I can go up or down half a gear and pull like a semi damn near....... Back in the 40s the highest hp engine available for a semi was the hall Scott running butane they made around 240 hp and the second was telling 220 Cummins ......the most common engines were the 6-71 Detroit and the 120 Cummins both making around 115 to 130 hp ........ But these trucks could still pull like mother fuckers because of the gearing they had. Mack especially mack engines very seldom exceeded 200 hp...... So mack used the Spicer aux trans. The most common were the Twins stick 5&4 Quadruplex and the 5&3 triplex. And the mack 9 speed duplex..... Mack offered the 262 and 350 Cummins in some trucks bc they're engines didn't produce the hp....... But mack trucks still outpulled damn near everything else simply because of gearing ................
And usually lower HP engines have a longer life span as well ..... A 5.9 b series that makes 250 hp will last decades longer than one that's been turned up to 400+ .......
Notyou Butme, the problem was the 6.5 was a horrible design to begin with. This truck should be able to tow at least 15,000lbs without over heating. I have a real truck a 3500 Chevy Dully, crew cab, long bed, 4x4. I just needed a real engine that could tow something without blowing up on me going over the Mississippi river at 11pm at night with my wife and kids pulling our 5th wheel camper. Semi's are rated for 80,000lbs and both of my parents are over the road drivers 30+ yrs. my dad's Volvo has the Cummings ISX in it. A 5ton truck is probably what you meant. Anyways, it's the option to be able to pull that much. Buying a semi, insurance, and up keep in a semi is way to much money for us who live off of a budget. I'm assuming you know very little about the old 6.5 and probably Love Chevy to death. Well in my last video I did the full conversion and I did pull 22,000 LBS and it was awesome! Not sure why you posted such a negative comment.
Davin, That truck is going to come out real nice bro !!! I wanted to build one just like yours but could not find the right price for the project out here in Palmdale Ca. So i ended purchasing a 1976 chevy dually and im almost finished with it. And i also had to modify my chevy alternator to fit on the dodge Cummings bracket but that's another story. Good luck on your build
Devin nice job, I have the same truck except it's not a dually. Like your videos, very informative. Hoping to retire the 6.5 some day. love the truck but the power plant is weak
Lol @ 5000# My 94 1 ton 6.5 has pulled a fuckin 4020 John deere tractor with! a fuckin f11 farm all loader on it! up 6% grades out here in the west! for UHH over 200,000 MILES!Now and all it takes is a fuckin brain!! and studying that motor!! and making the changes that the manufacturer overlooked!! no different than the junk ass 6.0 that Ford!! came up with!! OOO yea let's go buy a 50 thousand dollar!! truck to put 5 more grand into just to make it run correctly!! lol our improvements! To make a dam fine 6.5 pullin rig! we're under 2g!
Not really a ford supporter but I happened to noticed a typo, international harvester came up with the 6.9, 7.3(best ford diesel), 6.0, and 6.4 the 6.7 is the first in house ford turbo diesel but the virus continues and the 6.7 suffers from turbo failures
Sounds like your very passionate about the 6.5. The proof is in the pudding, I don't need or have to modify my 5.9 to make is pull. With the 6.5 just about everything needs to be modified. After all the mods is it still a real 6.5? Also, most of us are in the south with high temps outside and high humidity. Your up north in cooler temps with little humidity. All factors in the way the fuel burns. All of the Hummers with the 6.5's in the military over heat and died in the Middle East. They had to put Huge cooling systems into them not to burn them up. No wonder they gave them away to other countries and or started putting 5.9's in them.
"Ok motor if you wanna pull 5,000lbs" ive been doing fine towing 24,000 with my 6.5. Everyone passes me but I make more money at the end of the day once the fuel bill is paid
Pulled my 16000/34 foot camper to Alaska with the 6.5 turbo diesel dually 4door
Do you have any mods to your 6.5? Thinking about hauling my 30 foot 5th wheel, got about 209K miles on her
Glade you putting a proper Diesel in your truck

Great vid, it takes balls to take on a project like that.
That 6.5 must have been tired or really over worked then. Ain't had a lick of trouble out of my '97.
I pulled a 13k ish trl behind my 97 2500 didnt have heat issue but later got a bad hole in oil cooler line didnt know it going down the road gauges read good oil press but now something bad happen dont know for sure yet. If cummins swap wasnt so expesive I'd love to do it
My dad first had the truck and blew his oil cooler lines and by the time he pulled over and shut the truck off it was shot with the 6.5 that is.

I converted my 82 F150 to the 4BT. Went from 10 mpg city to 25 city. Gets about 40 on the highway though.
Why not use the NV4500
pretty decent info but damnit man... I'm bout to have a stroke from the camera movement
🤣 yeah man I made this back in 2010 with a Nikon D90 HD 2070p but I had no recording experience. Yeah take some dramamine before watching 😂
I have a 97 K3500 6.5 L w NV4500 & thinking about doing this swap. Does the body lift have to be done to fit? Been planning to do a 2" body lift anyway but worried about towing clearances with high lift

Mechanical and electrical to swap this older GM trucks?

Yes
10000 for the swap
I would like to do this. My 5.9 is gutless.
I have a 98 c3500 long bed crew cab too but not a dually and it has a 5.7 what do you think about putting in a 5.9 do you think it'll be a lot of trouble ?
Is a really good motor.... i changed the motor of a CAT320 Excavator for that motor a Cummins very very nice motor
Wow awesome thanks for sharing
Need some help with the wiring a 1996 cummins into a 1985 chevy dually would be great full
What's going on what do you need? If you want email me at. devinjaegle@gmail.com.
hey Devin I'm looking at putting a 5.9 in my 84 c30 need some pointers. haven't started on it yet but hope to soon
Thanks for sharing pal
5000 lbs! I laughed hard at the sarcasm...
With the 5.9................you may be able to pull 125,000 LBS...........Will take a couple modifications............justhes or TheDieselStop may show you how.
I like the Diesel Stop get a few parts from y'all. Thank you buddy!
love it thanks for aking the time
Where did u get the cummins I need to get one for my 98 k1500 z71
Look on craiglist, ebay, call local diesel repair shops. I don't have one at the moment. Wish I did!
any more vids to the series?
actually the largest chevy made back then was the 3500HD.
We have in Russia such an engine on the truck kamaz installed.
Lol! Yeah the anti shake mode does that.
In hav a 99 Suburban 2500 4x4, can I use my AUTO tranny? Tks
Yes, you will need the adapter plate depending on the tranny.
that engine will be struggling with 25k... it will do it but might be downshifting now and then! unless its a built motor
With a 6.5 diesel

My 6.5 pulls more then 5000 with no problems
olvuvery good olvu
man the fish eye lense is hard to whatch
INDIANA!!!!!!
Say goodbye to your transmission 25000 pounds haha. modern intelligent engineers designed big trucks to hull that kinda weight
It helps that it's a manual. Those hold up to overwork far better than most automatics.
A pickup is NOT a semi truck... if you want to pull 25,000lbs + get a real truck!
