Goblins are one of my most favorite monsters to play! To be able to keep Goblins have use to me as a DM I come up with many different things! Here's some examples:
Goblins find an old dungeon and inside powerful magical weapons and begin a small conquest on nearby Villages.
One Goblin tribe in particular has mastered taming wyverns and now air raids frequent farms now.
I once had a party who spared and kept a Goblin alive, his name was Duck. His former Bugbear Boss named his Goblin underlings animals he liked. After some time the goblin and party grew to be fond of one another (Plenty of Roleplay lead to it) in no time the Goblin was given leather armor, daggers, and asked to name himself. He named himself Scarborough and acted as party support. There is so much more to him but I won't write a novel here lol.

Have you seen shin sekai Yori? The goblins in that changed my whole view of goblins.
Goblins are a real threat if someone can mobilize them. Given their absurd reproductive rate, geniuses are bound to pop up among them.

4:52 I think what made them more goblin-like other than their size is that they were jittery and attacked in a swarm instead of a horde. Their lair felt less like a cave and more like a giant anthill or beehive.

The great mystery is who were the goblins before Maglubiyet? When did they appear in Toril? Were they created by a god or a creator race ? It think the lore is the Maglubiyet has hidden this information from them and the rest of the world . The search for true history of goblin kind is great idea for an adventurer campaign!

    • @ernestlam5632

I feel like they are the natives of Toril. Naturally evolved from the fauna. All other races are from somewhere else and/or divinely created.

I know that the concencous is that orcs and goblins in tolkien's world are different. But why would he have Gandalf in the hobbit say:
"Before you could get round Mirkwood in the North you would be right among the slopes of the Grey Mountains, and they are simply stiff with goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs of the worst description."

I think you could increase their threat. I can imagine mounting two or three on top of a direwolf and have them shooting at you, then join together their stats in a way, add a bunch of traps or even give them a some bombs or acid flasks. Have them be lead by a hobgoblin who leads them tactically.
I think the goblin king was some sort of sorcerer who subjugated the goblins to do his bidding. Theres a lot to the labyrinth though if I'm not mistaken.

Tolkien got Goblins primarily from George MacDonald's 1872 novel The Princess and the Goblin.

You can run goblins for quite a long time in the campaign you build them in with hobgoblins and bugbears and increase their numbers you lost them with rats and wargs and traps and you can run goblins well into the campaign

Every time I think of Goblins I think of STYX from the video game. They are FAR more than their monster manual stat block suggests.
Many of the low-end monsters that most DM's use as cannon fodder are far more fierce than you would expect.
Kobolds are the Viet Cong of D&D. Traps, ambushes and hit and run tactics that give them victory by attrition.
Goblins are the RAMBO's of the forests. Like kobolds, they are devious by necessity. The average goblin is nothing, in pairs, they are far more dangerous, helping each other to beat foes who are bigger and badder than they are.
Goblins & Kobolds... Underestimated from day one. Lose focus fighting them at your peril.

As far as Tolkien cannon goes, Rankin and Bass with Bakshi LOTR ROTK cartoons mid 70s is the wave motion cannon afaic. I prefer it to Jackson's movie ...everytime.

I Got Nilbog into my campaign to help the party after getting between by a goblin ambush. He enchanted the Wizard's focus after Nilbog stole it from him. And Nilbog died around what was essentially the boss. And the boss goblin turned into Nilbog: I called him Nilboss.

No, they were polytheistic it's just the strongest of them killed all killed the majority and only Nilbog survived.

Why does no one mentioning Gremlins?? =(

    • @ernestlam5632
      @ernestlam5632 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I remember there being Gremlins in AD&D Monster Compendium. (This is from memory so I'm sure I'm getting things wrong) They were smaller than gnomes or kobolds. Their ability was a bad luck aura. It gave the player extreme disadvange on rolls. All rolls not just attack rolls. Side note this back when Kobolds were goblinoids. Kobolds were the same size as gnomes and they hated each other. Back then Gnomes and goblins were fey. They had size pairings of good vs evil. So I think dwarves hated goblins and elves hated hobgoblins. Pretty sure gremlins weren't goblinoids. I think they were the hated race of pixies matching their size. I remember a black and white illustration of a gremlin magically levitating 3 feet off the ground in an alcove in a stone wall. I am probably imagining that though

    • @ernestlam5632
