Paradise lost, same with the Divine Comedy, has become so ingrained in Christianity itself that the boundaries between what it says in the Bible and what was created by poets have become blurred. A lot of what people know about Satan and hell comes from those works, not the scripture itself. It is like DLC or fanworks that became so popular they melded togethe with the original.
Isn't it crazy how both divine comedy and paradise lost came from people who felt a bad sort of way against their leadership/politics of the time.
I suppose writing was one of the few ways they could let a message out back then without bad repercussions... Just sad to see nothing has changed in centuries and we still play the same games they did.
But at the same time, the whole God works in mysterious ways could explain that’s how God is telling you how things work. The whole egg before chicken thing, except regardless which one came first-they both certainly exist.

Milton may have used the Bible for a partial reference, but took way too many libertys for it to be taken as anything more serious than a compeletely fictional poem.

For people who struggle to read the poem, I highly recommend listening to the audiobook and following along in the book. It makes it much more easier to follow, more dramatic and you can hear the change in voices so you can decipher the dialogue between different people.

I have two thoughts on that I was actually discussing this with someone about a month ago and we came to the conclusion that perhaps the angel is still guarding the garden of Eden because that it is job that was handed down from God which he will not deflect from. The other is that it is not here anymore that being said it perhaps got destroyed during the great flood. Tenuously related story but I always think of it when people talk about Satan.
Back in High School during Summer I'd spend a lot of time at my friend Jeremy's House. He had a little sister who was about 3 or 4 at the time and one day whilst we were watching something on the computer she came into the room and Jeremy, noticing a scratch on her arm, asked how she got it?
In a childishly sweet but honest voice she replied; 'Satan scratched me!'
We both yelled out 'WHAT?!' With laughter mixed with palpable concern and bewilderment.
'Satan scratched me! See!' She repeated firmly, showing us her arm with the scratch. 'I don't think he likes me...'
'Ha..haha... yeah...' I said looking to Jeremy...
You can imagine how troubling a statement like that was, so we both started quickly firing off questions testing her to see if it was just a misunderstanding or a lie but her answers either did little to nothing to calm us or, more concerningly, made things that much more sinister and worrying.
We asked questions like 'Did he say anything to you?'
'No, he doesn't talk.'
'What does he look like?'
'He's black, and, uh, small and he has yellow eyes... And nails! That's what he scratched me with! They hurt!'
After a few more questions one of us asked tepidly 'Have you seen him before?'
'Yes, but sometimes he's there and sometimes he's not. Sometimes he follows me around but most of the time he just watches me.'
... Yeah that that response actually genuinely shook us both. Neither of us said anything for about 10 seconds after that deep in thought...
I mean, how do you respond with an honest child tell you that a small, black, yellow eyed 'entity' that didn't like her that would come and go and who would sometimes following her around but would mostly just silently watch her. And now, no longer content to simply observe and stalk her he had begun to attack her... And perhaps most worryingly, despite being unable to talk he had somehow managed to communicate to a 3 or 4 year old little Jewish girl that his name, of all POSSIBLE names, was Satan...
A name which, incidentally, is a Jewish name from the Hebrew meaning 'Prosecutor.' He who levels charges against the accused.
All this gave the both of us pause.
So, concerned, suspicious and slightly dumbfounded Jeremy eventually said 'Show us where this happened.'
Then without saying anything she confidently led us through the house and into the garden, and pointed at the fence.
That's when Jeremy figured it out. He explained it to me through fits of laughter.
The Next Door Neighbour's new Cat was named 'Satin,' and evidently HE had been the one to scratch her. She simply hadn't learned the cat's name properly.
We both collapsed into hysterical, deeply relieved laughter once we figured it out. And went on to excitedly tell the rest of his family the story. As I've now done again here.
Still, for a few moments there, it was quite sincerely like being in The Exorcist.

I've been reading a version of Paradise Lost called "Paradise Lost in Plain English" by Joseph Lanzara. I recommend it for anyone that struggles to understand the poetry version, and would rather have a prose version, so that they can just read the story. It has the original poetry version in the book as well.

Paradise Lost captured my imagination in college. Nice to see someone bring it to a larger audience than just classics nerds. If anyone is interested in reading the book after watching this I highly encourage you to do so. It is rich with symbolism and there's plenty that wasn't covered here.
Oh, and Milton was blind when he wrote this too, go figure 😂

I never went to university but the symbolism intrigues me. Especially the Tree of Wisdom. Correct me if I'm wrong but does "the apple" or "the fruit of the tree of knowledge" referred to "Wisdom"?
If so, humans are refused by God to gain wisdom and tricked by Satan to gain it. To me, this means that John Milton tells us that God wants humans not to gain wisdom, meaning is that humanity is to remain ignorant. That "to have faith" is not searching for answers but acceptance that things are as they are.
To me, this tells us that John Milton message is "ignorance is bliss", where life of knowledge and wisdom means a life of struggle, but with a chance of redemption if one has faith.
@@Spiritus_Invictus John Milton was a devout Christian, and his purpose in writing Paradise Lost was to "justify the ways of God to men." Whether he succeeds at this or not is up to interpretation, but I don't think Milton would be on the side of portraying God as keeping humans willfully ignorant.
There are 2 trees in Eden, the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Wisdom is not necessarily associated with either tree. In biblical context, wisdom is something deemed good. Wisdom is sometimes personified as a righteous woman, and there is the old phrase "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."
I don't know if that answers your question but those were some thoughts that came to mind

As a writer it is beautiful to hear the in between conversations someone takes from a larger story. We don’t hear the little conversations within Scripture or in myths that’s why I enjoy when writers expand without taking away from the bigger story.

Very good metaphor for the human condition.
If you think of this as something that is happening inside your head: God being the "True Self", the human being "choice" and the devil being the "ego" then it kind of unlocks an understanding of our nature.
This story, like every horror movie, proves every time someone says lets split up nothing good comes from it, just death.
"Paradise Lost" is a meaty poem to say the least. The first time I picked it up, having sworn to myself that I was gonna finish it, I actually laughed out loud. I'd wrestled my way through Homer's "Odyssey" before over a period of... eh, only about seven months. "The Divine Comedy" is a far easier read. I raced through it.
I couldn't put "Paradise Lost" down at all until the poem was half finished. I definitely felt Milton's sympathy for the devil. The rest all just felt like Church and took me ages to finish.
I expected this presentation to be long and maybe a little boring, but kudos, it wasn't at all. I loved it.

I had much the same experience with the poems you listed, the second half of Paradise Lost was indeed rough to get through.
John Milton also wrote a book about regicide. Defining why it is okay to kill your own King. When the King's son came back into Power ,I am amazed that John Milton survived. John Milton later lost his own eyesight and decided to dictate this book to his secretaries. We are very fortunate to have this work of art.
I read it at age 14 (having snatched it with curiosity, out of the school's "A-level set text cupboard") and felt exactly the same! 👍 Milton's Satan rocks! 🙂👍
It's not sympathy for the devil- he's literally writing from Lucifer's perspective. That's the point. Lucifer doesn't see himself as the bad guy, but in reality everything bad that happens to him (and his followers, and everyone else just about) in the poem is literally his own doing.

But really this story kind of reminds me of AOT, why should generations of people be punished for the sins committed by our ancestors? What kind of "freedom" is that? A god that wants nothing more than his creation to worship him or suffer eternal hell for thinking otherwise is no god I wish to serve. I will create my own reason for living, we deserve to be free.

Wrong! Jesus paid the price for mankinds sin and choices. Reconcilling us back to the Father. We didnt believe him in the beginning. Maybe thats why belief in him is important. Yet instead of looking at it as it is and taking responisablity. Unbelievers just blame the very one who saves from such places.

Why did he have to die for our sins in the first place, God made a son just to sacrifice him for rules he made up. I'll have no part in a religion that rules by fear and control. An all loving forgiving God wouldn't send people to eternal torture, wouldnt kill millions of people in a flood, wouldn't kill every first born child in an entire community. (It's been awhile since I left catholicism so I forget the details but you know the story I'm talking about, blood on the door to save his chosen people and shit). I understand why some people need religion, it's hard to wrap your mind around life ending with nothing after that. Its tough to deal with the thought of never seeing your dead loved ones again, it's hard to grasp our own mortality and some people aren't ready to do that. If you ever do decide to question your religion there are resources and people to help with that.

There is a film called paradise lost. It’s about 3 boys around 18-20 who kill some children in a devil worship ritual. Johnny Depp and the rest of Hollywood actually get these boys a retrial after 13 years or so and get them off. All of Hollywood and most elites are Satan worshippers..it’s disgusting

It's amazing how much of this story has not been passed on. I've known the story of Adam and Eve since a child, but I never heard how or why Satan ended up in the Garden of Eden. Fascinating.
In all my years in Catholic school they never taught me this: A friend of my big brother told me the "adult" version of Adam and Eve. Lucifer the fallen angel planned to destroy God's divine creation by temptation, but not with a forbidden fruit. He was God's most beautiful angel and appeared in front of Eve to tempt her,he did. Just like this story she resisted at first but eventually gave in to this beautiful stranger. Lucifer had sex with Eve and she never experienced such a great feeling,pure bliss. She then went back to Adam and tempted him to have sex with her and he obliged. The original sin of humanity. God knew what transpired and when He appeared they felt shame and covered themselves before Him. Almighty God the Creator gave them life, Eden and each other. Why forsake Him and sin. The same punishment handed out in the novel, except Eve and every woman after her will bleed once a month and childbirth will be painful. The same punishment for satan,the serpent will taste dust forever. Eve's children were split, one the son of Adam, the other spawn of satan. Hence,Cain the evil killed Abel the good. Cain's bloodline died off in the great flood. Mankind was saved by Adam and Eve's third son,Seth. I guess the Catholic church kept it PG for the kids.

Paradise Lost is one of if not the most influential works ever created.
When I read it, I recognized countless terms and phrases that I'd seen or heard in modern media.
Lucifer is the kid who showed up to the birthday party and didnt get a gift basket. So he goes out of his way to ruin everyone else's baskets
This would make a good miniseries.
I think instead of Reading from the Bible Chruch needs to show the people the signs and smybols evil use show them what tricks they play and unmask the evil there dealing with instead of praise they know that teach them how to defeat there enemy by recognizing how they work

Personally i love when authors give a evil villain depth. Dark souls does it often and it tragic life to a grim dark world
There isn't much depth to Satan. He is a petty evil being obsessed with his own vanity to the point he thought himself better to be God than the creator of all things. And despite having literally no chance in hell in his own vanity convinces himself he can best God and prove him wrong if he can just destroy the people of God and Israel since God's word and prophecies say the opposite. The Bible does not speak on Satan because He was already defeated by Christ. At this point he is a petty defeated foe struggling against reality trying to drag whoever he can to hell with him because he has already lost and knows it. The sad truth is the people that don't believe the truth and think it all a fairy tail because everyone without Christ is lost. The cunning of the devil is crafting fan fiction and lies into truth to make people think less of it or to believe it is all just a made up story. Its like the saying goes the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist.

I feel like it's a bit overused in modern art and media. Nowadays, almost every villain has some deep tragedy or personal reason behind why they're evil. It's becoming increasingly rare to see a villain who's simply and purely evil, for example Palpatine from Star Wars or Morgoth from Tolkien's Legendarium. I get that the stereotypical moustache-twirler is a bit stale, but I think a more refined version of a truly narcissistic villain who literally cannot comprehend why people think they're evil, and believe themselves righteous, would be a good advancement.

There's a certain beauty in that part about Adam and Eve. Having knowledge of his wife's sin and understanding the punishment which is known for her. It is kind of amazing Adam would sacrifice his place in paradise to be with the one he loved. He saw her as a part of himself and did not wish for her to be alone. I know it's just a story but that really is something.

Lucifer in the Bible was the most perfect creation in heaven. Iniquity was found in him. He wanted to set his thrown above God’s. I will be like the most high. This was already a premeditated hostile takeover. He convinced 1/3 of the angels to follow him.
It never said he was made in Gods image like humans where (I personally think this caused friction and jealously with Lucifer.) seeing humans. No matter how powerful, and beautiful Lucifer was he was not made in gods image or in the likenesses of God. A perfect male and female representation of God was made by creating humans. Heaven was filled with angels, but there was only two humans ever created. Two beings different from angels, different from the animals. In the likeness of God. Lucifer knew the consequences of Adam and Eve sinning. How do you get back someone, you hurt their children. I feel like him tempting Adam and Eve was a big FU to his creator. Why would he want to tempt Adam and Eve? To give them knowledge of good and bad? There was no good intention there. Lucifer knew that knowledge of good and bad came at a price. And the price was death and being cast out of paradise. Humans where not created for that purpose. But because they all had free will, God didn’t kill them, a tyrant would have killed them on the spot, but God just had to get them out of paradise because there could be no sin present in front of God. I can see how God could be labeled a tyrant but nothing in his character was tyrant like. He only had one rule for Adam and Eve. You may eat out of all the trees except for the tree knowledge. For if you eat of this tree you will surely die. This part of the Bible talks about the power of seduction, disobedience and consequences. I don’t see Lucifer as a liberator. He was manipulative. A liar that misrepresented himself and his intentions. I see him as a prideful, jealous, aesthetically beautiful, destructive being that got envious of God and his power, and envious of humans being made in Gods image. Fast forward to now, according to the Bible Lucifer is the god of this world. The powers of the air. God the creator is not striking down people for sinning. We are living in a world where we have free will and most of the time we use this free will to hurt others or ourselves.
Everything ever created by God is in God's image.

I enjoyed your post. I'm a fellow Christian. Satan is slick about his ways, indeed. Convincing people that he doesn't exist was his greatest lie, by my opinion. People these days are so dumbed down and no one seems to have critical thinking skills anymore. Satan is at work but God always will win. Satan's pride shows how stupid he really is. Anyone who thinks they can take God down, is beyond mental.
OMG the graphics in these videos are just absolutely stunning, the attention to detail on the demon's bodies is just incredible. They look pretty much how I would picture them in my mind, terrifying and beautiful all at the same time.

In the Book of Enoch, which is a part of the Bible that is considered canonical in Ethiopia but apocryphal in most other countries, a group of angels marry humans and give birth to a race of giants before Noah's Flood. So yes, they can, depending on your branch of Christianity. I'm not sure what Islam has to say on the matter, though.

I read Paradise Lost when I was ten. I found the book while I was doing a delivery run with my grandmother. It was in this bin by someone's garage and the box read "Take what you like."
I picked this book with a few more age appropriate novels but I liked the very plain cover it had.

This video inspired me to finally read the poem. I got a modern language version which has the original wording just above the modern wording of each verse. I would read the modern language verse and then immediately read the original wording. It made the poem much more pleasant read. Milton’s language is beautiful, but sometimes difficult to understand. If anyone has difficulty reading the poem due to the archaic way of speaking, I’d recommend the method I used.

Paradise Lost is one of my favorites! I took an English class in college just so I could talk and learn about this book and Milton.

I mean, it's considerably less romantic considering that the very next thing Adam does after eating the fruit is to begin viciously tearing into Eve for "getting him into this situation." That heartfelt sentiment led him to debase himself and it degraded his purity of spirit.
Thank you so much for making this. It took me decades to work it out that it's no use looking for this story in The Bible and although I'm moderately brainy, there's no way that I was going to undertake a poem that size and in that language in the general course of my search for new kicks. I might consider having a go at it now, mind you. Anyway, a nice piece, well presented, so thank you.

Yeah, it's crazy because when you look at the actual Bible Lucifer is *only* mentioned once and it is only referring to a Babylonian king - not the Devil. I just had this debate over this. It's astonishing to me that millions - if not billions - of people over several thousands of years believed in something that isn't true. And all that was required of them was to simply investigating the situation (reading what the Bible actually says) for 2 minutes.

We're all agnostics. Nobody's faith is 100%. We all question things, even a little bit and that's the beauty of being human.
But we have to be aware that there is more to us than what current scientific understanding portrays. Human scientific advances are ever-evolving. We can only know so much, we'll never know everything.

A part of me seems to know this is true. An intuition that we are all some what fallen from grace. Living out our lives in this earth, some half asleep, some confused, some know more than others!
It is probably that we deep down wish it was true. We suffer without understanding and christians don’t understand that people are persuaded by words alone, controlled. An angel of such great power confusing us would solely be his fault. It is like punishing both the adult and the toddler for committing a crime. We are but babies compared to the angels. It is awful to know that adam and eve was punished like that. However, we understand that species don’t just magically come into existence. They take form and change overtime, evolution. Such a simple concept that can be seen on smaller scales at anytime. We literally have proof of this. The cities and people of the bible may have been real but they can be exaggerated. We must remember that drugs were also used back then. The trauma they had to go through to survive everyday can bring mental issues. We must not forget that many of them had issues physically and mentally worse off than we do today because we have medics and psychologists. These people could also be liars and controllers. So many issues that could occur with people we never meet and we want to trust them.
I tried reading Paradise Lost years ago, but found it too long-winded. Basically the Devil is someone with serious daddy issues.

I have always said that if you take the Bible literally, you only get words, not wisdom. And, despite the weirdness, the contradictions and the imperfect telling, retelling, writing, rewriting and translations of translations that were themselves translations, it is still an incredible book of insight and wisdom. And weird. Sometimes, really, really weird.
But this was an incredible video. I've never read Paradise Lost but there are so many allusions and motifs in this video that my hair stood on end.
You know, in all of my conversations with "traditional" Christians questioning pre-destination and why we were given free will, the answer has always been so that we can choose to *not* sin.
And I have always said that's a dreadful reason for a God to create a soul already knowing the decisions they will make. And knowing those decisions will mean an eternity in hell, still making that soul is an utterly monstrous act. Only an evil God would do such a thing.
None has ever said "So we have the free will to love".
This video was the first time I have ever heard that we have free will to *love*.

I think it's pretty telling that Christians, who claim to believe in a God of love think of free will in terms of what condemns us,when really, it is what redeems us.

He was a serpent but it had limbs a bit like a lizard 🦎. After the punishment it lost its limbs and became a snake. Perhaps the 1st.
From what I heard, the serpent had hands and two feet and was kinda smart, almost similar to that of a man but the serpent lusted greatly after eve and Lucifer exploited that and kinda 'pocessed' it to lead eve to temptation.

Milton's Paradise Lost is very readable! I've read it many times. My favorite work of all time. "Did I request thee maker, from my clay to mold me man! Did I solicit thee from darkness to promote me, or here place in this delicious garden?" Adam's soliloquy. Eve's plaint, another favorite passage, "Forsake me not Adam, witness heaven what love sincere and reverence in my heart I bear thee, and unweetingly have offended, unhappily deceived, thy suppliant."
A short movie production worth watching. John Milton was a genius. We must repent and seek redemption. For those who say that the devil does not exist, the devil smiles when he hears that. Lucifer (through his underlings) still gives us temptations. Thank you for this fascinating and interesting condensation of John Milton's books from the channel. 🙏

just researching some stuff for my story which has characters from myphology like the demon lords. But the more I hear the more I feel I should make my own thing. I referenced a lot of things a bit too directly.
In my story characters can manipulate elements usually just one. But most antagonist will have multiple elements like Lucifer using Light and Darkness. He can shot beams of light offensively. Draw attacks with his darkness power towards him. By combining them he can open portals to another dimension to trap someone, reflect attacks or escape.

Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Its not just any random knowledge, its the decision making capability of God, when we weren't cut out to cope with that power....we still aren't now. It's why the Bible says "blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth".

Because Milton wrote it in epic poem form, it was a challenge to read. Can't tell anyone this will work for them, but it worked for me. I read it aloud & concentrated on doing that as well as I could. I was able to follow the thread by listening as I read it aloud to myself. Never had to do that before or since.
Works with any of English too including Shakespeare and King James. Good tip. Also, please do this when editing your own writing. Not you, I mean everyone

Actually I became a Christian after experiencing supernatural in New Age/occult. When I read that other religions had to refer to Christianity and the name Jesus when there was overt possession, it piqued my interest. I read Case for Christ. I chose Christianity. Being born again was different. I had a series of unlikely events occur followed by asking Jesus on my knees to show me like a child, the Truth really opened up. Even if Lucifer were the victor and the plight of the righteous was hell, I could not go along with what are considered acceptable by Luciferian such as the sacrifice of children.
