- Dr. Kiri Tamihere-Waititi
Clinical psychologist and Māori activist
She wears many hats - wahine toa, clinical psychologist, mum of five, and an unapologetic activist. However, at her core, she is most passionate about the intersection of mental health and colonisation, advocating for Māori solutions like kapa haka for healing.
Kiri has been performing since she could stand. Raised in Kohanga Reo and Kura Kura Kaupapa Māori at Hoani Waititi Marae, she was born into a haka whānau, with her nan, mum, uncle, and aunty being long-time performers of Te Rōpū Manutaki, Te Rautahi, and Te Waka Huia. She has performed at all levels and is a long-time member of Te Kapa Haka o Te Whānau a Apanui.
She considers herself a self-proclaimed hōhā who gives unsolicited advice to everyone. Trained as a Clinical Psychologist at the University of Auckland, she de-registered out of protest and has since dedicated herself to creating pathways and opportunities that empower te iwi Māori towards emancipation. She engages in various initiatives, including Whanau Ora, mental health, politics, and social media.
She joins us for the second kaupapa, sharing her childrens simplified and refreshing interpretation of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and He Whakaputanga. Her episode is now available on TH-cam.
