I finished my letter to Deanna then set it aside. A week or two had passed and I heard the saddest of news - the world had lost one of the greatest voices of our generations. Losing her voice, her presence, and her beauty was bad enough - losing her legendary talents, the memories she created - was devastating. They, those whom I enjoyed most in this meager lifetime, brought more than laughter and joy to me. Gone are the most enjoyable of friends - she, Deanna, among them.
not only one of the loveliest women in filmdom but one of the loveliest sopranos ever to grace the entertainment industry, and I am very proud to be able to say, a distant relative of mine.
I'm a 28 year old woman who only cries under very very rare circumstances. And yet, no matter how many times I watch this, it makes me tear up. I understand exactly where you're coming from. It's heart-breaking beauty!
I cannot believe the beauty of her voice, had not heard this for years, Deanna no one comes close to you for voice sheer perfection, RIP angel on earth.now angel in heaven.xx
I am so pleased I have found this.Deanna Durbin had a truly beautiful voice, pure as spring water. As a 50 year old man, seeing this brings back so many happy memories of sitting with my mother on a saturday afternoon to watch the old black and white films.Well done for posting this clip!
What a blessing! Just beautiful. Always brings tears; and, this is how nuns should look. Good to see all the stars of Hollywood's Golden Years: Kay Francis, Walter Pidgeon, Henry Stephenson and S.Z. Szakall.
This is a most beautiful hymn. I dont know why people would want to bash each other. think about the words. absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!! Excellent video and thanks for sharing!!!
You are soooo right. Unfortunately I have a hard time not tearing up when I listen to great classical music. I guess it's because that was my life for over forty years, but not any more.
It's such a shame that there aren't movies made like this anymore. I am a thirty something year old Catholic who longs for the church to be as it once was portrayed in beautiful segments of movies like this. Times when people not only respected the religious, but revered them with the highest regard. Now they are made nothing but mockeries of them. Jesus, mercy! Thanks for the beautiful video post. God bless.
Absolutely true, and I love the Bach/Gounod piece with Miss Durbin and the choir boys as well. "Ave Maria"--Hail, Mary. "Gratia plena"--full of grace. Doesn't get much more Latin than that!
Some music come into our lives and quickly go. Some STAY FOREVER and leave footprints on our heart. And we are never ever the same, those are JUST A STAR LIKE DEANNA DURBIN !!! !!! !!!
Heartbreakingly beautiful, I can't believe that I have never come across this version before. It makes me wonder what other treasures are out there. Thank you TH-cam.
This rendition of Ave Maria always moves me to tears I've listened to Deanna sing it hundreds of of times over the last 50years, my mother bought the record during WW2 and I found it in a box when I had just become a teenager and loved it ever since. Her voice is wonderful and she was such a lovely lady who wrote to me a couple of times and sent me a signed photo from Mad About Music dedicating the still to me which I sent to her some 30years ago, sadly missed by many LOL R.I.P.
no words need to be spoken, everytime I listen to her beautiful voice, so under rated, yet one of the best, every time she makes me cry, I think I have watched all her movies, especially when she starred with Franchot Tone, I am sure there was more going on there, the chemistry between the both of them was electric.
One of the greatest female voices ever. Pity she lived in the early days of film and recordings. Perfect intonation, breathing, phrasing and rhythm. What more can one want?
Mary was my Mothers name. We felt the presence of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes in 1988 as we marched in the evening procession with 10,000 of our closest friends and sang this song. Breath taking!!
i was taught in a Catholic by the good sister we called them nuns...and with the exception of just one....none of them could hold a candle to the beauty of this Deanna Durbin....and the one nun who could give her a run for my money cried a lot...she was just too beautiful to be a nun...even my Mother (God rest her soul) told me when she had to see her about something...what a pretty nun she was...sister Jacob taught me when i was in the fifth grade at St Peters on Belmont Ave in Newark NJ..way back in '58
My Mom introduced me to this beautiful singer and we would watch her old movies and of course this piece on you tube. This was the song she remembered as a child and loved this so much. Mom died a few days ago and 'Ave Maria' was played at her funeral mass. I will always think of this with every rosary I offer for her.
Oh, Ceil! This is just beautiful. This is the kind of music one will hear in Heaven. No one knows what Heaven will be like, but I can't imagine Heaven without Mozart' music, as well as other great composers - Haydn's "Cretion" , etc. And now let's add Deanna Durbin to that list. (Of course, she's still living. :-) This is the best, most wonderful and glorious "Ave Maria" I've ever heard. Thank you for the posting. operabuff1935
I adored Deanna, grew up watching all her movies and used to say my prayers that God would give me a voice like hers.. He never did, of course, her's was one in a million.. The fact that she could act too was just icing on the cake.. They just don't make movies like this anymore and they just don't make singers like Deanna..
The Franz Schubert composition, the melody, the music, the arrangement, the performance by Deanna Durbin all magically woven together to create a masterpiece and to have been there during this scene would have been a moving and spiritual experience.
Thank you for this wonderful posting and the additional info regarding Schubert. Durbin was an exceptional talent that few people have any inkling of today.
R.I.P. I've loved her voice and her movies so much, tried to watch every single one of them. She was a wonderful singer and actress and a great person.
This is a real classic version of this gorgeous piece. I listen to this one on my AVE MARIA playlist when I'm feeling nostalgic about my grandmother, who loved to sing this piece.
Apparently 19 people are without souls or worse than satan. How this song, this rendition cannot bring a sinner to their knees or tears of joy, is beyond me. Even Satan trembles at the mere sound of an "Ave". Thank you for posting, this is one of the most beautiful renditions of this song I've heard in a while. How I miss when the Catholic Church was truly Catholic. "THIS" is what the angels treasure and what we strive for. Merry CHRISTmas, to all!
Anyone who would give this a thumbs down is just sadly ignorant. Even if it is not the style they listen to they should at least appreciate the performance and the song for the quality and the skill that it is.
I don't know what this song is about but it entered my Heart and touch my Soul and if i close my eyes and listen i'm in a World of only PEACE AND LOVE. Can you believe a young boy in JAMAICA hearing it for the first time and loving it. I'm now 59 and i love it more
Thank you for putting this lovely piece of music with the beautiful voice of Ms. Durbin on youtube and sharing it with us. I also like, though, short in length, the youtube video of Marian Anderson singing this with Leopold Stokowski conducting.
i was named after deanna. i am now 62 and have just watched her for the first time. no wonder my mother loved her so much. fantastic
I'm 54 years old and I can't help crying when I hear this too.

The most beautiful Ave Maria rendition I have ever heard!! Miss Durbin's voice is so smooth, so soothing, so angelic, I want to cry.
I'm a 28 year old woman who only cries under very very rare circumstances. And yet, no matter how many times I watch this, it makes me tear up. I understand exactly where you're coming from. It's heart-breaking beauty!

So beautiful! My mother had this sung to her by a nurse as she was dying! Tears to my eyes every time I hear it! I love this so much!
I’m crying now!
Reminds me of my Catholic School Education from 1953-1961. . . .those were the days!! God Bless for posting such a beautiful song!!!

All I know is that this was my mothers favorite rendition of this song and is why I love it also....Thank You Deanna.....
This song reminds me of my dear Mum who passed away a month ago. I can't put into words how much I miss her. Love you Mum.
You are soooo right. Unfortunately I have a hard time not tearing up when I listen to great classical music. I guess it's because that was my life for over forty years, but not any more.
So beautiful and such a way to honor Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Absolutely true, and I love the Bach/Gounod piece with Miss Durbin and the choir boys as well. "Ave Maria"--Hail, Mary. "Gratia plena"--full of grace. Doesn't get much more Latin than that!
The purest, clearest, most perfect soprano voice ever. Others have lovely qualities also, but she is my favorite!
Some music come into our lives and quickly go. Some STAY FOREVER and leave footprints on our heart. And we are never ever the same, those are JUST A STAR LIKE DEANNA DURBIN !!! !!! !!!

My mother loved Deanna Durbin, and I now know why, what a divine talent.

She stopped making movies before I was even aware of her. Never realized how beautifully she sang until U-tube. Danke sehr!
If Schubert wrote nothing else he would be remembered till the end of time for Ave Maria!
Wow! I have heard this many times from different singers but "Wow" Deanna's is the nicest of all. Gorgeous. Spine tingling stuff!
I love this song, a beautiful tribute to the Mother of God. Thank for posting it here.

One of the greatest voices of the 20th century. She inspired Maria Callas and Mario Lanza. RIP Deanna.
She has an Angelic face for sure, a powerful voice descended from Heavens to touch the heart of hearts of all mankind.
Beautiful; the golden era of movies.
Deanna Durbin a beautiful woman and a amazing singer 🍀
Absolutely beautiful. One of the most beautiful renditions I've ever heard of Ave Maria.
