    This was her last aria in her last movie, after which she falls into the lagoon. Thus, she not only finished her career on a high note, but at her high water mark. Beautiful and brilliant.

      from far you are right; usualy we are bored with ancient way of singing these repertoire...But here this is life, Deanna was a perfect actress and singer, far above others, just a question of heart and brain...she moves us to tears or makes us laugh as children , she was full of life, a charming girl we all would have loved to get maried !

      I noticed that as well. Did you hear her singing "Vissi D'Arte" on TH-cam? I am not that fluent in Italian but the video included the Italian and I was able to follow it as she sang with no problem.

      Yes this was a good role for deanna durbin.i like her character a smart working woman
      She is not dumb she is not naive she is not wisecracking.she is so natural and real.i borrowed this movie from my local library a few months ago and I enjoyed seeing deanna durnin as a feisty young working woman in the big city with an important position with a big time boss.roles like this I would have liked to see more of her in.she is kinda a precursor to the working women you see on TV.

      I am bilingual and she sings beautifully in Italian, so much so that I don't have to strain to understand her, as sometimes can happen with non Italian speakers..I can hear dropped letters or letters not rounded off enough, even incomplete vowels...but I can't fault her in this one

    What a beautiful version of this wonderful song,As i have said before Deanna is a treasure we cannot afford to loose she sings arias in her beautiful soprano voice,A lot better than those so called baratones,just listen to her singing Old folks at home Nessum dorma cielito lindo vissi darte alleluia la tarviata musetta waltz and many more. Fantastic

      yes, and the most important, a voice we do not meet nowadays in any stage...and i was very close to the national Paris orchestra and its choir, when i was young....a question of soul, of essential identity....
      Universal had gather many marvelous identities and it is actualy obvious that such clever and gifted a woman was welcome and much appreciated..
      In those days, of lengends, it was possible to elevate each others and the great composers were realy great....in any countrie in fact....they allowed artists to express the best they could....there is so much to say...
      This little band of clever artists was composed of brillant persons, who were in the awareness of great causes...as Robert Stolz for exemple in "Spring parade"...they wanted to warn us...and here, there is a similar script with the beloved contralto Kathleen Ferrier, also working and joking , working as a telephonist with the General Post Office... in real life...same soul , same joyful women, same involvement.
      Best regards

    Note to pete jones: She did it perfectly because she was that good, an extreme perfectionist. (At 15 she fought on the set of "100 Men and a Girl" with Leopold Stokowski about something that she didn't like.) There are baritones who sang this aria with more power than she did, but none who acted it better or sang with more melodic beauty. Listen to her sing the male songs and arias Amapola, Annie Laurie, Loch Lomond and Nessun Dorma (None Shall Sleep). No tenor, and no other soprano, for that matter, does them nearly as well.

      EdFred And I might add "Goodbye" by Tosti, of which she gives an almost matchless rendition. No tenor sings it better. I also enjoy her version of "Amapola."

    • @edfred3512
      @edfred3512 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      John Beall She was pregnant and holding water when she sang 'Goodbye, Forever', and that softened her features. When she steps out from behind Franchot Tone in the elevator, she looks like a beautiful vampire getting ready to strike. 'Goodbye Forever' is one of her most magnificent scenes in any movie, and she and Tone carry it off brilliantly. Except for her rendition of 'Danny Boy'. the rest of the movie wasn't much, but this scene was worth the price of admission.

      She saved my life while I was a first year student in high school. I was a loner couldn't make friends because my mom drank from her loneliness.first person I brought home she slapped so I didn't make friends. I waited for my folks to go to work and ran home the first thing I found on TV was Deanna Durbin in "His butlers sister" she was beautiful when she sang tears rolled down my face it was the Russian song sorry can't remember the name and then Nessun Dorma from Turandot. She could hold a note so long and beautifully. I was not an opera fan but she was just amazing. I wrote her in France in 2003 Thanking her from saving me from lonely teen years. She wrote me back .it's my most prized possession. I have all 21 of her films I got from eBay. She was so famous they had dolls , books Luke Nancy drew and paper doll books. She saved universal from bankruptcy with her first film " three smart girls" and later became the highest paid actress in show business. She wanted more dramatic parts but the public didn't she retired in 1948 married her director from " lady in a train" and moved to France and wanted to be left alone. If you ever get a chance to get her movies you won't be disappointed. Just Google her name and films by her. Well I've wrote a book lol sorry I get swept up in memories of her. I'm going to watch her now " it started with Eve" one of my favorites. Thank you and Bless you all

    Deanna Durbin was a really good Lyric Soprano known for this Soprano version of Largo Al Factotum. Because they don't have any editions of this aria with the Vocal part in Treble Clef, Deanna Durbin (and all Sopranos) actually would have to sing the Bass Clef part an Octave higher than written in order to achieve this Soprano version.

    For what it's worth, I was starting to listen to Judy at Carnegie Hall, and decided to listen to Deanna instead.
    I get the same feeling listening to Deanna that I get from watching Eleanor Powell dance.

    • @irenejohnston6802

      Judy Garland, vastly overated Deanna Durbin, sublime

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My feelings entirely. Thinking the same just before I saw your comparison.
      Both Durbin and Powell were strong-willed gals who understood their talents, worked hard to use them to the full, refused to be bowled over by stardom and had the courage to trade it for domesticity when they risked being trapped by a stereotype.
      Deanna's relations with the bosses were more fraught- she rebelled against Pasternak and Koster, her mentors, whereas Ellie marched to her own drummer. That is probably why Powell could handle a big comeback years later, whereas Durbin's renunciation of show biz was the most complete imaginable.
      But while the going was good, both were dedicated to lifting the world's spirits by deploying their supreme skills to spread joy. Their art effortlessly leaps over the conventions of ltheir time and place. Thanks to the permanence of film, careers such as these can be appraised when all we have to go with, say, Jenny Lind or Isadora Duncan is legend.
