The most annoying behavior of the new Photos app is that when you tap on a photo in the Library it will not open in full screen view as before but instead it opens much smaller inside a frame full of various controls, and you need to tap on it for a second time to finally see it full screen. Any way to disable this? Thanks
The worst part about this design is that I can no longer easily switch between 2 sets of photos. Before I would have one photo open in my library section and another photo open in my albums section and I can easily switch between the 2 without having to scroll between one and the other. Same thing goes with viewing photos in the camera roll alongside those which are in the hidden or deleted album. Now since I gotta scroll down to view albums, everytime I want to switch between these 2 photos I have to scroll down to the albums section then scroll all the way back up and re-find the photo in the main section and do this over and over again
The new photos update is very unusual for apple in that they have taken an app that was intuitive and made it a complete mess. Thankfully using the customisation setting I have unselected all of the album sections apart from media types. This has made it almost the same as what it was previously.

Hmmm. I was really excited to DL 18 but now I’m not so sure. What they really need to do is give you the ability to use any version you want. All the features are great, but the UI and layout is something that should be up to us.
The version of the Photos app in the latest beta I actually really like. The earlier iterations I didn’t. I really like that you can customize what sections you show. After doing that for my phone I actually like this new version better.

Great feature rundown 😊👍 I recently discovered a feature, that you didn't mention. Most people know that you can use the camera to scan a QR code. But not many know that you can also take a photo of the QR code, and then later when you open that photo, you can press the QR code in your stored photo to access the page or function the QR code is meant to trigger. Say for instance you're at a concert with friends. You see a poster add for the band's merchandise shop with a QR code to access the shop. If you'd like to save the QR code just snap a photo of it and click the QR code later when you have better time.
Huh, no mention that the Days views is gone?? We used to have 'Years, Months, DAYS, All', but now the days view is gone! That was my favorite way to browse photos. 'Recent days' seems to have replaced it, but it’s not the same at all: 1) I want to access the days view starting from Year, then Month, down to a specific day - not starting from today. 2) The vertical scrolling in the Days view was perfect. In "Recent days", the vertical scrolling is limited to just that day. You have to scroll horizontally to move to the previous or next day. I hate it. 3) In the day view, we also had an indication of the location. This view was beautiful, and ideal for reliving past years, especially long trips. By the way, even the new "trips" view doesn't show these locations! This is a downgrade!!
My thoughts as well. If I had just downloaded 18 without researching it first I would be overwhelmed and annoyed. I do not like these kinds of changes but given how thoroughly he explained it, I may just like it.

After watching your video for a second time, all I am seeing is the pros and not any cons. Thanks again, I’ll be updating this evening. By the way, I’m not new to Apple. I have been using iMacs, iPads and iPhones since 2001. I am a photographer and use the photo app constantly.
great video. What I hate is when you take a picture from the main library and put in a folder you cannot delete from the main library because it will also delete it from the folder
Unfortunately that will never change. I can see instances where I would like to do that, as my library just grows and grows without culling. I have to sync them back to my Mac, make a new album, sync them back to my phone. And then delete them from the phone. Very cumbersome. And also annoying, you cannot delete an album from your phone that’s been synced from your Mac (if you want to free up space).
That’s because you are obviously not an Apple person and don’t understand file philosophy! Essentially, this is a database and what you look at when you see the entire collection is the data set a.k.a. photos. They are all there unless you decide to delete one. When you organize an album, all you do is select the photo from the database and it is filtered to that album as an alias not an original. The original remains in the database. If you delete a picture from the database, it will disappear from any other album. You have included it in. Period if you decide to delete a photo from within an album, it will give you the choice of deleting the picture as described above or just remove it from the album Which in that case leaves the photo in the database for other uses. Once you understand that you will understand Apple. this actually is a more advanced system than those were information is not treated as a database.

I agree. When you’ve been using an app for years and suddenly apple changes it, for no obvious reason, it can be quite irritating. If you rarely use the apps that they mess with, it might not be a deal at all. If there was a significant benefit for the changes, they might be welcomed. Sometimes, though, it feels like they tinker around just to tinker around.

When searching for some text that appears in a photo, the search does an amazing job of finding that. When you select a photo it has the search term highlighted in yellow where it's found in the photo. What's the best way to remove this highlight when looking at a photo? It can be very distracting if you have searched for a photo to show someone else where the text is highlighted yellow. Yes it would have been really nice and or intuitive if Apple could have just included a short tutorial or user guide of their own within the photo app itself. Otherwise ya this dudes video explanation was wonderful ‼️
Frankly, I don’t really see what the big deal is. Mostly it’s a huge improvement so what’s there to complain about? Most of the time we just don’t like change even if it’s for our benefit and it feels like this is one of those times. I don’t like change when I sense that it’s done just for the sake of having to do something for an update, but everything you’ve shown here seems to be useful and all it takes is getting used to yet another version of iphoto/photos! Thanks for the explanation.
@@nixl3518 it's an awful app. I know people don't like change, and you normally get someone complaining. But when nearly everyone says how awful it is, then that shows something. I mean what happened to the camera roll. I now have to scroll through the photos and it shows everything, all my saved and imported videos as well. The whole thing is just a mess.
I think it is way easier to find and keep up with photos and more organized than the previous app. Most people don’t like change so will complain about something but this new version really does offer a lot more. Just do a side by side comparison of differences and it’s obvious how much better it is!
I actually quite like it so far, everything apart from having to swipe down to get to the library seems pretty intuitive. If you didn't know you could swipe down for the library it could be very frustrating for unfamiliar users trying to find their previous photos.
I find this exciting. We are always hesitant when there is something new to get our head around. I found that quite a few of these things are not new but rearranged by location and presentation. The trip addition is the most exciting point for me and will look forward to it being as useful as intended. For years I have been submitting a request to have the ability to save photos directly to an album. Which I think would be far easier but this may be just as good. We shall see.
I’m 100% open to change for 2 reasons. 1. Because, well, it makes tech just simply more fun. And 2. It makes it more easy to learn and digest the changes when you have an amazing tutor!! Just saying. Thanks Tom!
Is there a way to search on Photo Captions that I add to a photo's metadata when you pull up the photo to show the metadata screen? Seems like there should be a way to use the actual text I take the time to enter myself?
Nice video. Seems to be good upgrade. Only thing i i don't understand in iPhone photos app is why don't apple provide proper gallery management? Like for whatsapp photos or shared by/through other apps why doesn't it has separate folders created. Usually it also comes under recent folder which makes the photos app complicated. Do you know if anytime soon can we expecte that feature?
so much change and yet still no way of MOVING a foto from the library to a certain album so my library gets decluttered...its the apple way of saying "you want it that way"
@@sunlit777 Yes, there should be an option in Library to where one can hide all photos organized into Albums (and preferably sub albums of their own) to help one know what all photos are left to organize as desired.
@@ManiacBone hands down the most frustrating part about Apple photos for me. If I have a ton of physical photos on my table and put them in a physical album, they won't be a part of the mess on my table anymore..why Apple can't implement this concept in the digital space is beyond me. In Google photos this can be accomplished by moving the photo to Archive, which isn't the most intuitive way but it's still something. I think a simple way Apple could accomplish this is by just adding a filter for "not in an album" or something along those lines.
@@mspointe4 David cox on TH-cam has a video to organize photos on the Mac exactly to do what you want. Ie eliminate photos you put in albums. His channel is tech talk America
Finally Apple photos is getting on par with Google Photos. Tetsed this on iPad os, but going to wait for the general release for iOS. Google Photos had been great but until I decided to download the images only to realize all meta data was taken out and then took days to sort that out :(. Finally can move all photos to iCloud to utilize the 2TB space.
I call it job security (also, brand security). Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. How many times have you seen “new and improved” on a product, and, clearly, improved it is not. It’s unfortunate that apple now forces us to update. I used to wait a week or two for the glitches to be fixed. 😔
The new photo app interacts with iCloud differently I think, still confused. In the iCloud on my phone if I turn on photos it then deletes all the photos I had under “from Mac” what’s going on with that ?
Where did the favorites album go, I used that on regularly and can’t find it anymore. Also would be great if when you moved a picture to an album it was removed from the photo library. Is this possible to do?
Dear Tom, I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you happen to know if there have been any changes regarding the "Memories" feature? Up until now, when we left it to the AI to create a memory video from the selected photos, it would do so, allowing us to change the background music and adjust the mood of the images and videos. However, there were many instances where the editing program cropped the photos in such a way that part of the content or some people in the pictures were missing or only partially visible in the memory video. So, my question is, have they made any improvements in this regard? Does the system now recognise this issue and offer any way to correct it? Thanks!
At first, I was irritated by the changes. However, after seeing this video, I warmed up to the changes and how I can change the layout and order of how the categories are displayed (or not). It will take time to adjust. In the end, I find the new features useful and time savers. My recommendations, watch and share this video. Practice after each chapter and repeat if necessary. When Apple introduced the new features on the Event day, it was too quick, too vague and overwhelming. This video takes the time to show the new, useful features, and how to use them.
I am still sitting on the fence about whether to upgrade to iOS 18 or not, but it doesn't seems as bad as I thought. It got more features and the options are better organized.
Very informative thanks. It really doesn’t seem very different though. Just some UI tweaks. It would have been useful to hear what it is people hate about it
I hope and assume this same useful functionality will exist in the concurrent MacOS upgrade. I always transfer all my phone photos to my mac on a regular basis (via backup, I don’t subscribe to iCloud). Can anyone confirm this?
I love it. Only one old complaint. No option to sort album names list alphabetically. Only way to sort them is by pressing and sliding to new position. Brought back memories of the old card sorter days. Univac 1004 :)

Thank you very much, excellent explanation .. I did. notice however that Create was not showing for Memories or Trips (iPhone 13)
Added complexity but flexibility comes with that. After seeing you explain everything it looks fine. Thanks PHT.👍
if its so flexible why arent the buttons rearrangable? Edit button moved from a spot its been at for 10 years.
Hello! How do I enable "Memories"? Settings-apps-photos doesn't give that choice. Only "reset memories". Thank you for the rest of the content.
Can you change the order from ascending to descending or vice versa?
Thank you for the great videio!
9:15 Can one person/pet be added to multiple seperated groups?
I think it is way easier to find and keep up with photos and more organized than the previous app. Most people don’t like change so will complain about something but this new version really does offer a lot more. Just do a side by side comparison of differences and it’s obvious how much better it is!
I love the way the photos look now. It is very intuitive and much more organized, I believe.
It would be nice if you reviewed any changes to editing photos in 18.
How do you search photos in this new update . I used to be able to type on dog and see all pics I ever took of a dog
What happens to the albums you have created in the previous version? Do they eliminate the albums and you have to redo the albums?
I actually quite like it so far, everything apart from having to swipe down to get to the library seems pretty intuitive. If you didn't know you could swipe down for the library it could be very frustrating for unfamiliar users trying to find their previous photos.
Great summary, thanks! Under memories, I am not seeing the Create option. Is that dependent on the phone you have? I have a 14Pro. Thanks!
Thanks Tom!
It always takes a bit of time to get used to something new and it can be frustrating at first but I don’t know, it looks pretty good to me.
Thanks this is so helpful!!
Do you know if anytime soon can we expecte that feature?
so much change and yet still no way of MOVING a foto from the library to a certain album so my library gets decluttered...its the apple way of saying "you want it that way"
@@ManiacBone you cannot move a photo from library, library by definition is THE STORAGE holding all your images. All albums are WITHIN your library
@@maurice491thanks but can you do it on the phone or ipad?
I don’t have the create option for photo memories, any idea why that would be?
Thanks. Your productions must be among the 10 most professional on TH-cam. A huge amount od work. Well done.
A couple months ago I organized like 5k+ photos, this update is already way better in my opinion after one day of the update
Great video! I really needed the guidance!
I call it job security (also, brand security). Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. How many times have you seen “new and improved” on a product, and, clearly, improved it is not. It’s unfortunate that apple now forces us to update. I used to wait a week or two for the glitches to be fixed. 😔
Well done video. Photo app seems ok to me - if I have to pick a negative, maybe a bit disorganized. With that, the app works for me.
Thanks - great video. Better App than expected after your guidance
The fact that they devolved the video scrubbing interface back to the severely inferior old way of scrubbing is just bonkers.
Why would they do this?
The new photo app interacts with iCloud differently I think, still confused. In the iCloud on my phone if I turn on photos it then deletes all the photos I had under “from Mac” what’s going on with that ?
Where did the favorites album go, I used that on regularly and can’t find it anymore. Also would be great if when you moved a picture to an album it was removed from the photo library. Is this possible to do?
Any idea why my phone seems to hot since update?
Dear Tom,
I hope you don't mind me asking, but do you happen to know if there have been any changes regarding the "Memories" feature?
Some are saying this new update kills the battery a lot ?
Days option gone?
How to EDIT an individual photo- where did that option go?
The horizontal stripe button below the photo. Not as obvious as the word "Edit".
In the trip function, tapping on the trip overview doesn't show me an option to share it. I'm using a 16 Pro with IOS 18
Is this update on standard iPhone?
Why did they take away the option to sort photos by day. It only lets you sort by month, year and recent days.
No mention of the edit button gone?
I love it.
Only one old complaint.
No option to sort album names list alphabetically.
Only way to sort them is by pressing and sliding to new position.
Brought back memories of the old card sorter days. Univac 1004 :)
