This song was made popular by Lead Belly in 1944 although it is thought to be a traditional American folk song dating back to the 1800s at least. The original songs that were combined to make this song were called 'In the Pines' and 'The longest train'. Nirvana's cover is truly epic and the sheer force and emotion of Kurt really makes this recording hit. Loved the reaction!

    • @shark7352
      @shark7352 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Not traditional American folk, def. European folk, perhaps a murder ballad. A lot of Scottish influence, nobody really knows though, and that is amazing.

@@michaelvoorhees5978 No way - I mean, it's great, but also kind of down a different branch of the "In the Pines" tradition. Nirvana's follows more of the bluesier tradition branch of the folk song. Sort of apples to oranges comparison - which flavor you prefer is personal preference. Having said all that, Nirvana's is a masterpiece of a rendition down this path.

Speaking to their sense of humor, you should see them perform Smells Like Teen Spirit on Top of the Pops. Nirvana was pissed off that the British tv station would only let them use live vocals but use a backing track for the band. In retaliation Kurt sang as terribly as he could while the band made it very clear that they weren't actually playing. Legendary and hilarious performance.

The "good" feeling's you get from a song is usually from the tension and release or resolve that takes you along emotionally. Kurt was a master at grunging up some tension with his voice, leading to a bigger release, hence, more emotional tie to the song.

My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
Her husband was a hard working man
Just about a mile from here
His head was found in the driving wheel
But his body never was found
This song is about a man discovering his wife is cheating on him and then going out into the woods in his car to think and being killed.

I believe he's singing "In the pines, in the pines where the sun don't ever shine". And you were on point with his singing style in relationship to the song's lyrics. According to wikipedia...Grunge singers used "gravelly, raspy" vocals, growls, moans, screams and mumbles and "plaintive groans"; this range of singing styles was used to communicate the "varied emotions" of the lyrics.

This wasn't just a song on this cold November night, it was a direct question to his wife...whom he knew was cheating on him and you can feel it. Kurt wanted them to buy him Leadbelly's guitar for $500,000, while the one he's playing sold for $6,000,000! I he think he surpassed his hero...Chills forever.

That guitar is currently the most expensive guitar ever sold

It’s a Leadbelly cover from 1944, one of Kurt’s favourites according to lore; has nothing to do with his twat wife.

I grew up hearing this song, my mom and my uncle would sing this song whenever they had a party and got drunk together. I was stationed at Quantico the first time I heard this version, in the barracks being played by a buddy of mine and I laughed my ass off. This is one of my favorite Nirvana songs. It is a classic

"in the pines"... when running north midwest to deep south you suddenly smell pines and the feel of the humidity later the salt water.

You should look up who Lead Belly is. The drummer in Nirvana is Dave Grohl the Foo Fighters front man.

The song they're covering from Leadbelly was called "In the Pines".
"In the pines, in the pines, where the sun don't ever shine, I'd shiver the whole night through"

Leadbelly was also covering it. No one knows who wrote it originally but it was known before Leadbelly

Huge fan of Nirvana and one thing i think that made Kurt's voice so powerful is his ability to completely release it...just 100% authentic.

Im sure its already been said but Nirvana was as big a group as any group has ever been. They took the music scene by storm. Fun fact. Im from new haven ct. Nirvana played at what is now a health food 2 days before they released Nevermind officially. It took 5 seconds for them to blow up after that.

Kurt was about staying true to whatever...and this song kinda gets with it. Some say... fidelity etc.
