Fun Fact: When Kurt was talking about Leadbelly's guitar for $500,000USD he had no idea the guitar in his hands in that video would go on to auction for $6mil USD.
The owner of the Indianapolis Colts added it to his collection.
His daughter gave this guitar to her boyfriend. I think Courtney Love sued him to get it back.

True I love the unplugged series and I love that they only did it, like only Kurt would do, if they didn’t sing their hits. Annoyingly enough, all those songs and covers became hits after. Poor Kurt.

This song was made popular by Lead Belly in 1944 although it is thought to be a traditional American folk song dating back to the 1800s at least. The original songs that were combined to make this song were called 'In the Pines' and 'The longest train'. Nirvana's cover is truly epic and the sheer force and emotion of Kurt really makes this recording hit. Loved the reaction!
Not traditional American folk, def. European folk, perhaps a murder ballad. A lot of Scottish influence, nobody really knows though, and that is amazing.

@@michaelvoorhees5978 No way - I mean, it's great, but also kind of down a different branch of the "In the Pines" tradition. Nirvana's follows more of the bluesier tradition branch of the folk song. Sort of apples to oranges comparison - which flavor you prefer is personal preference. Having said all that, Nirvana's is a masterpiece of a rendition down this path.

Nirvana has been my favorite band since 1992. The entire Unplugged album is fire. "All Apologies" is another one of my favorite. Dave Grohl is the drummer and went on to create the Foo Fighters.
Saw them three times,first time on SUB POP tour with Tad Mudhoney and Soundgarden.

The Leadbelly version is called Black Girl, a traditional folk ballad dated back to at least 1870. Leadbelly is a rabbit hole that would teach a lot about the old blues men.

The explosion at the end by Kurt was perfect...lacerting, emotional, the perfect release from the long set up. Masterpiece.
My favorite, though not unplugged, was Tied to the Whipping Post. There are some songs like that which just rip you up.

This, and the Alice In Chains unplugged performance are 2 of the best contemporary live music acts ive ever herd at the time. . and still

The "good" feeling's you get from a song is usually from the tension and release or resolve that takes you along emotionally. Kurt was a master at grunging up some tension with his voice, leading to a bigger release, hence, more emotional tie to the song.
Speaking to their sense of humor, you should see them perform Smells Like Teen Spirit on Top of the Pops. Nirvana was pissed off that the British tv station would only let them use live vocals but use a backing track for the band. In retaliation Kurt sang as terribly as he could while the band made it very clear that they weren't actually playing. Legendary and hilarious performance.

According to wikipedia...Grunge singers used "gravelly, raspy" vocals, growls, moans, screams and mumbles and "plaintive groans"; this range of singing styles was used to communicate the "varied emotions" of the lyrics.

Kurt was a rare talent. I'll never forget the day he died. All my friends came over and we all got drunk and cried.
They were pretty much my favorite band at that time. His death was a hard punch.

Was never a huge Nirvana fan, but this unplugged album was amazing, might I suggest the pearl jam unplugged version of Porch
This was the album that changed the perception of Nirvana for a lot of people. They won a Grammy etc. but Kurt was too dead to enjoy the new audience that they'd created.
This unplugged was the best one and the only that was nearly half covers that weren’t released on their other albums it was just Kurt sharing some of his favorite songs
MTV wouldn't let them do some specific songs, so they said F it, and played a bunch of covers instead their own music as a screw you to them

You gotta see Nirvana's Papercuts song, well it's a music video inside Radioshack. NO ONE could scream or shreik or whatever it's called like that dude. It's just insanity. I've heard that he was having stomach pain and needing a fix badly right before this show, vomiting etc, yet he still put on this performance. His eyes are a bit bloodshot here, but the dude still shines, Mr. Rogers sweater and office chair and all.

Huge fan of Nirvana and one thing i think that made Kurt's voice so powerful is his ability to completely release it...just 100% authentic.

There's a saying in sports, "To leave it all on the field." With this song, Kurt Cobain indeed left it all on the field... and dropped the mic. I had never seen such emotional release in a performance when this came out & have never seen one quite like it since. Kurt and Nirvana were indeed all time greats. It's so sad that he chose to end his life so young.
Leadbelly is an old blues artist from the 40’s and 50’s. The song is about his woman cheating on him and she feels so guilty that she doesn’t come home.

Also, lol last comment, if I’m not mistaken, Kurt and the lead singer of REM were became family through marriage not long before Kurt’s death, and Kurt actually sent him demos of acoustic songs he wrote because Kurt wanted a break from nirvana and lead from REM and Kurt were going to put out an acoustic album together. A key thing about this song is that it isn't "Where did you sleep last night" as in "who did you sleep with". It's about... I heard your husband is dead, where were you last night.... are you OK? I'm worried... were you cold? It puts a different spin on this song when you understand that...

the song is essentially about a father looking for his daughter who commits suicide in the pines after her husband was killed by a train. its a beautifully tragic song. and yes, its a Leadbelly song.

Nirvana played at what is now a health food 2 days before they released Nevermind officially. It took 5 seconds for them to blow up after that.

I grew up hearing this song, my mom and my uncle would sing this song whenever they had a party and got drunk together. I was stationed at Quantico the first time I heard this version, in the barracks being played by a buddy of mine and I laughed my ass off. This is one of my favorite Nirvana songs. It is a classic
