Kurt's guitar sold more than Leadbelly's this year. 500k was the original asking price. With inflation it's only worth $1,086,743.94. Kurt's acoustic was sold for way more which is at least a bit more than $6,000,000 now.

I'm not anyone's idea of a Nirvana fan, but Cobain here did something remarkable. He sang a traditional song, gave proper credit (sort of), and turned countless people onto Leadbelly and traditional folk.

"In the Pines", also known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?", "My Girl", "Hey Girl", and "Black Girl", is a traditional American folk song originating from two songs, "In the Pines" and "The Longest Train", both of whose authorship is unknown and date back to at least the 1870s. The songs originated in the Southern Appalachian area of the United States in the contiguous areas of East Tennessee and Kentucky, Western North Carolina and Northern Georgia.
Versions of the song have been recorded by many artists in numerous genres, but it is most often associated with American bluegrass musician Bill Monroe and American blues musician Lead Belly, both of whom recorded very different versions of the song in the 1940s and 1950s.
Nirvana made it a household name 😢Kurt would be pissed at that.

This is my favourite Nirvana performance EVER! I was so pleased when 'Nirvana Unplugged' was released as an album. This is IMO the best song on there, even though it was a cover - Kurt's voice & charisma took it to a whole new level - the way he gasped & looked up in the last line - haunting, brings me to tears every time. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame; I was deeply affected by his tragic death, but what a wonderful legacy he left us........I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔
PS the song is over 100 years old - recorded under different titles including 'In The Pines' and 'Black Girl' - Leadbelly recorded it in the 1940's. I think it will always be Kurt's song now due to this performance🖤

Thanks for the reaction, my favorite song from their MTV Unplugged special! Lead Belly, was a black American folk and blues singer born in 1888 and passed in 1949. He was famous for playing a 12 string guitar among other instruments. No one is sure who wrote “In the Pines” (aka. Where Did You Sleep Last Night?) but he recorded a version of it in the 1940’s. You're absolutely right that he wasn't ready for the fame, he just wanted to be an artist. In the final months he was allegedly planning to leave Nirvana. He'd already left Courtney Love and there's evidence he'd requested that his will be changed to make their daughter the sole beneficiary, cutting Courtney out entirely. He'd become close friends with Michael Stipe of R.E.M, a man who has always managed to create on his own terms, without all the nonsense of celebrity, and they were allegedly planning on working together. Part of the story of Cobain's passing is that he bought a plane ticket to go to Georgia, to go and stay with Stipe, but he didn't make it.
This is one of the many reasons people believe he didn't take his own life. It's also one of the many reasons someone had a motive to stop him.
