@@brittreacts i love gorillaz, i heard them in 1999 for the first time and i falled in love. If you pay attention on it you will hear that females chores actually says "feel good".
i suggest you some other songs of them that you could like too: Andromeda, Melancholy hill, Doncomatic, People; then Saturnz bar, that you will hear the first time and you will say "wtf is it?" but more you hear it more you can't stop to play it.

what they did beats the hell out of creating a 'band' of random people that you hire to pretend to play the songs. there's already an abundance of groups that look pretty for a living, maybe do some choreographed dances and some lipsyncing, while the producers are getting rich without the hassle of being famous.
these guys just made up some really cool fictional characters, while getting even richer, without the hassle of being famous.

They are a very unique band. One of their big hits was a song called Clint Eastwood. You should check that one out. It’s really good and different.

The Gorillaz are a genre unto themselves.
A lot of their tracks have guest singers.
To get the full effect of the videos, its great to watch tthem in order.
The band is actually virtual, so every track has an amazing animated video.
I would recommend a little research, and more of their videos to answer your questions.
They have a wonderfully funky sound all their own.

The Gorillaz was created by Damon Albarn who is the singer/songwriter of Blur. Blur were big in the 90's. They always went head to head with Oasis in the British charts for the number 1.

Feel good _inc_ is basically about industrialised happiness aka fake happiness which stands in contrast with the windmill on the green little island that could represent contentness. ALSO! The choppers you saw in the end of the video is a direct connection to their next song in the timelime: el manana because this band writes a complete storyline in their songs! The carachters each have their background story ^^ So Gorillaz are just two people: one musician (Damon Albarn) and one animator (Jamie Hewlett) Damon writes the music and they integrate it with other musicians which give this vast variety of genres over each song and time. Most of their songs are collabs with other musicians, very often with people I wouldn't have heard of otherwise since I'm not a massive music nerd, which I think is so cool. Feel good inc. is such a classic and the rappers in this song are de la soul which they've worked together with a bunch of times.

Gorillaz first album was probably the first album I chose to WANT actively as a kid, it came with a tape of a few music videos and I was hooked. Loving everything animation and to see an animated band blew my mind. Been listening to em for 20 years now and prob my favorite band/group ever. The amount of styles the lead vocalist and head of the band Damon Albarn puts together hits me every time they do something new.
I'd love to see you delve into the Gorillaz rabbit hole cause there are so many great songs.

They work with hip-hop producer (one of my favs) Dan the Automator as well as Danger Mouse. They have features such as Del the Funkee Homosapian (Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030), De La Soul (who were featured in this song), Shaun Ryder, Bobby Womack, Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Mos Def, Vince Staples, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Miho Hatori (Cibbo Matto), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and a ton of other musicians.

The vibe of Gorillaz has always been a really cool experimental mix of rock and hip-hop sounds. They’ve collabed with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Elton John, plus a lot of more underground artists at times.
The “band”, actually just Damon Albarn, was originally conceived as a commentary on how many popular musical acts were manufactured images, people going up on stage and being fake. Gorillaz is the logical end point of that idea, a totally fake band that doesn’t even exist. Later on storylines were developed for the band, the latest album covered them moving to LA so the leader could start a cult.

I still remember the first time I ever heard this song, I was at a party as a teen and it was mixed in with a bunch of grunge and alternative that I always listened to. It really opened me up to experimenting with new artists (well... after listening to this album on repeat for a month first) because I realized how much I could be missing out on.

The "huh huh" part you repeated a few times is actually part of the song title, so instead it's "feel good".
So, I'm 72 years old and I love music. My first reaction to Gorillaz was similar to yours Britt, loved the beat but just confused. Then I couldn't get enough of them. Brit. You have now entered the cool space of music. Gorillaz is, as far as as I’m concerned, a genre of its own. Read up a bit on the artists who are partially from a former British band called Blur and a HipHop group called De la Soul. But there are also others featured. I love the Gorillaz sound and animation. Fun fact: Netflix is doing a Gorillaz Animated series at the moment.

Your best bet to understand the group, is to just google and read wiki etc, as it would take quite a bit to really describe it and do it justice, as it is such a unique concept. Good catch on the lyrics and video, they paint the picture of how the successful musicians playing a club/concert aren't happy, at least in any meaningful way, while the girl just playing the guitar for herself is free and happy.

Well… there is not genre!! Just kidding!!! lol they are famous (mostly the singer) for genre mixing! Which is like putting rap and funky together, or hip hop and rock… and more stuff like that!!!
Don't bother trying to categorize Gorillaz, they cover such a wide range that's it's rather pointless. But a few other epic tracks from the band are, Clint Eastwood, Dare and Melancholy Hill, there are quite a few more but that's a good start.
Gorillaz is fusion.. they are the sort of band that you can't just say "x" is their genre.. You can say for example that they mostly fall under the umbrella of rap but it would do disservice to their song.. not out of disrespect, even if you hate them, you still would but them in one specific genre..Best I can say is they are fusion.. I can give you a list of genres they do NOT sing under, but that would be pointless as well.

I'm sure many people will answer you questions. The only member of this "group" is Damon Albarn & uses other artists to assist in each collaboration. There are no other regular band members. This is why every song sounds different in a unique way. He was the singer from Blur.
Don't try and put music in a box, just enjoy it. I am basically a rock listener, but enjoy all types of music and never fence it off because it isn't my "genre". Good is good.

Gorillas are a virtual band (always animated, even their live shows have a huge screen the animations show on) that only has 2 permanent members, formed in 1998 by Damon Albarn (lead singer, piano, keyboard, guitar and melodica) and Jamie Hewlett (animator). The rest of the band is for tours and varies from tour to tour. Almost every Gorillaz song has a featured artist on it. Gorillaz don't really have a genre as they do a bit of a lot of different things but can probably be boiled down mostly to alternative rock/pop/hip hop/trip hop. Damon Albarn was the font man for the band Blur (a Brit-pop band with a lot more success in the UK but had lots of radio time in the US with their song 'Song 2'). Gorillaz are amazing and I hope you check out more of them! Some songs I would recommend: Dare, Clint Eastwood, On Melancholy Hill, Saturnz Barz, and Cracker Island.

Melancholy Hill is my favorite. Went to the Concert in Dallas tx back in the fall. Fyi the animation is the group. Every vid is animated. Hell the Concert was Animated. You must do more. Stylo has Bruce Willis in the video.

Gorillaz has been around for about 20 years. Damon Albarn is the only permanent musical contributor. A star-studded list of collaborators from Ibrahim Ferrer to Bobby Womack to Mick Jones and Paul Simonon to Tina Weymouth to Dennis Hopper to Shaun Ryder and on and on, keep the sound fresh.
PS De La Soul is the rap duo performing the chorus.

Gorillaz is a UK band created by Damon Albarn (the singer) and Jamie Hewlett. There are 4 members in the group, they have several genres of music, it can be trip hop, rock, hip hop, rap, reggae, dub, pop...etc... They often have guests in their tracks, here, the guests are De La Soul 😉. Before Gorillaz, Damon was the lead singer of the British band Blur, successful in the 90's.

Gorillaz was formed in 1998 by Damon Albarn, lead singer of the band Blur, and Jamie Hewlett, the comic artist best known for creating the character Tank Girl. The idea for the band came as a response to them watching MTV, and realizing there was nothing of substance on it, anymore. So, why not make a band that isn't actually real in any way? All music for the band is done by Albarn, and Hewlett came up with the look of the band. The "Members" are 2-D (vocals, keyboards), Murdoc Niccals (bass), Noodle (guitar, keyboards, vocals; and she is the only female member of the band) and Russel Hobbs (drums.) The Genre of the band is yes.
As a 50 year old guy, I remember records stores before genre's, everything was assorted alphabetically. First you saw country which was a gospel bluegrass country hodge podge. Then Rock, Motown, Rap, hard Rock, Heavy Metal Industrial, Gangster Rap, Reggae and so on.
Genre. It's rock.
As to what subgenre. Some call it rap rock. Think, Red Hot Chili Peppers. But underlying all of it is just straight up rock.

Gorllaz is a virtual fictional band created by Damon Albarn and artist, Jaime Hewlett. Damon does the singing as Blue Haired singer. Damon has guest musicians and singers when Gorillaz live in concert such as this Rap Trio, De La Soul.
The genre is Gorillaz haha. But the rapper on this track is actually De La Soul! He isn't a member of Gorillaz he just featrured on this track, but they did have an original rapper in the group called Deltron 3030, better known as Del the Funky Homosapien haha, who was portrayed by the character of Russel. You should check out Clint Eastwood from their self-titled album, it's incredible. But the lead singer and co-creator of Gorillaz is Damon Albarn, who is also the lead singer of the British rock band Blur.
When Gorillaz came out, it was such a blast! You could hear them EVERYWHERE and i ended up even buying one of their album as well. Thank god i've saved my compact disc player eheh
A lot of groups out of the late 90s kind of did their own thing creating some unique music, I recommend checking out some "Rehab". . . also "Sublime" , . they were more mid 90's but an amazing, unique band all the same.
Tracks to check out. Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Dare... You know what, unpopular opinion but every song from them is amazing in it's own way. There are several that some people don't vibe with and others do. It's just that kind of music. I personally love all of it but a lot of stuff is a bit devicieve for some. Not in a controversial way, just a, this sound doesn't really click with me way. Don't know if that makes sense but when you hear it you'll know what I mean.
the members of the Gorillaz are 2D (Vocals, Keyboard), Murdoc (Bass), Noodle (Guitar, Keyboard, and Vocals), and Russel (Drummer). Ace from PPG was also in the band when Murdoc left the band. he was in the music video for Humility. check it out

You've you to check out some more Gorillaz! Their album Demon Days is definitely in the top three albums of the early 2000's. If you check them out again I'd suggest Stylo. Gorillaz has no genre and it's one main guy - Damon Albarn (voice of blue hair guy) who collaborates with an ever changing lineup of artists.
I forget about this band every 5 years and every time somebody brings them up it brings Joy back to my life
