It's competitively priced, but the Hyundai i30 is not a budget car - it's much better than that! In fact, it was placed top in the 2010 Driver Power customer satisfaction survey, with owners heaping praise on the car's quality, reliability and low running costs. While it doesn't quite offer the same sense of class or quality as a VW Golf - or offer the styling flair of a Honda Civic - it feels built to last. What's more the engine line-up is economical and the cabin is comfortable and spacious. Add to that a five-year unlimited mileage warranty and the i30 is well worth considering.

I have this car now for family reasons.
It has a nice size boot (plenty for buggy and some other bits)
Is smooth to drive
Very spacious
Quite nice looking (externally)
Easy to clear up foggy windows
Ridiculously Comfortable
Basically the Perfect family car
Would recommend this 100%
Very reliable very very nippy I've got 1.6 crdi 16 valve
I've had a few golfs audis and bmw
bag of rubbish
This one never spend a penny on it
Reliability 100 percent
I haven't even top it up with water in the past 8 months I've driven it
Just put diesel and drive
Is it big enough if you have kids ?
Can you tell us about reliability? Is it simple to fix or change oil, filters or brake pads?
@@phhuynh9881 don't have it anymore I gave to my mum as ft a new car. But yes ways reliable never have 1 problem with it that was outside of the normal brake pads needed etc. I never done any of that stuff myself, just mechanics.
Bought my 2009 I30 1.6 CRDi last month with 140.000 km on the clock. It runs and drives soooooo sweet. Absoluty love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How is it holding up till now?
I bought mine a few months ago, and coming from a dying Peugeot 206 this is a HUGE upgrade. It's comfortable, spacious, and actually feels preety luxurious on the inside. For anyone looking at one of these (mine is a 1.6 crdi model), make sure to check these things, since these things have cropped up for me:
1. Rev the engine at idle (at least 2000rpm) and listen for a whistling sound. If you hear the turbo whistling, that MIGHT mean that the turbo is on its way out. Mine has been whistling from the day I bought it, no telling whether the turbo will be fine for years, or if it will go out tommorow (I don't have any signs of turbo failure other than whistling, so I choose not to worry about it).
2. DO KNOW that the car does have a DPF, so make sure to take it on a motorway once a fortnight so it could regenerate. If you don't do that, you're going to have to regenerate the DPF at a shop, or, even worse, replace it entirely, and that costs A LOT.
3. Again, rev the engine at idle. Listen for a distinctive ticking sound. Now, I don't know exactly what it might be in my case, but I have a feeling it's the timing chain, since the noise is present even when the fan belt is removed. My mechanic told me to just ignore it, but it's still eerie to drive around and hear it at around 1500rpm, it's better to avoid a situation like this if you can.
4. Check for rust at the sills and wheel arches. My car had some, and I had to repair it ( i didn't mind it, since I got it for half the price).
That's all that I've noticed so far. The car has been bulletproof otherwise (knock on wood), I've already covered around 3000km with it and am very happy with my purchase. :)
I’m going from a half dead peugeot 107 to one of these - can’t wait! Lol
@@LanaDelLyricz They're preety numb to drive, but on the other hand it's dead easy to drive, since the steering wheel is very light. Enjoy your new car, the only issue that has cropped up for me since the last comment is the rear driver's side door - it doesn't open from the inside, or the outside. Nothing compared to my 206, which kept breaking down every week or so, lol...
Thanks sir. By the way, how much did you buy that car and how much you paid to repair it?
@@alanx1592 I paid 1400 EUR for mine, the turbo cost me 500 EUR to replace (got tired of the whistling noise). Front and rear brakes cost me 135 EUR. I repaired the rust myself, it cost me round about 100 EUR, so all in all the car has cost me 2000 EUR. By the way, my car has covered 290 000 km, it's been bulletproof otherwise, doesn't burn a drop of oil between oil changes. The rear door turned out to be a stuck handle, a bit of sprayable silicone grease in the handle, moving the handle a few times loosened it up, now the door opens again. :)
Went from this Hyundai to a 2020 VW Polo and the difference is huge there too. Smooth gear shifts, silent engine, premium cabin with sharp digital display with support for android auto and apple carplay.
This Polo is easily the best car I've ever driven. Next purchase in 10 years will probably be an SUV like VW T-Roc.
Best Hyundai I've ever seen. Very reliable and elegant.
FORZA HYUNDAI MOTORS!
I have 1.6 crdi 16valve style 2008 had a bump in it and was given a 2019 Mercedes a class only 7k mileage hire company 9 days later gearbox blew
It was nothing like my hyundai reliability was so happy when I got back from garage
Repaired never misses a beat
My i30 is 7 years old in September and its a great little car. Not had any major issues with it, only general wear and tear bits needing replacing. Its nicer to drive than my dads 15 plate focus too. I find it grips better in the corners. I’ve also had an Astra (11 plate) which was a great car, but my i30 is nicer to drive. I’d 100% have another i30, no questions asked.
Fairy Potter wich engine?
Bassjet 1.6crdi 116
i30 today though is a badass car. I like those sharp backlights on new i30 (from 2013. and later). I am looking to buy an used i30 (around ~2010. maybe), and when the price depreciates for newer models, I will get the 2013. (or later) one :) .
My father had Hyundai Lantra (1998.) for ~18 years. Not a one single fault on it!!
I live in Norway and uSe my i30 as wintef car its very good car for the money!
@@petterdalbyvesteras7428engine oil 5w30?
I have owned my i30 2009 for 6 months now. Great visibility, doesn't seem to have a blind spot probably thanks to it's bigger than average wing mirrors. Easier to park than the little Corsa I had before. A very comfortable car to drive and be a passenger in. Highly recommend this car.
Should I get this are Corsa? What's the difference?
Just bought one today and I pick it up tomorrow! I can't sleep I'm so excited!!!

This car has improved significantly!
the car is really good, I personally had a short trip in it. Have to say that the interiors are really comfortable in the back as well. Car is silent and the price is really good. But on the same token the look is not appealing at all. If Kia does a facelift I'd be a lot more populat.
one of the best cheap family cars around....mine had been an ex police car for 5yrs and had been abused during tgat time...it still runs and drives like a dream....great pulling power for a 1.6 diesel even with 4 passengers
more expensive cars don't even have air-conditioned gloveboxes. Nice thinking Hyundai.

They really came a long way
Would look even nicer with a decent size spoiler as well 😄
i think i want this to be my first car. :)
Well, 9 years later - was it ?
Oh my Lanta!
The car is very confortable, and the driving is great.

Great review, thanks!
I have one and the only problem in my opinion is the Sound when drivin on motorways.
What do you think, which one is better, Hyundai i30 or Kia Ceed?
I am just interested to know:
So please thumbs up if you own or are driving that car
What usual problems occur on this car ? As im looking at buying the 1.6 petrol
Really clean car but check fsh.
I live in America, and I prefer the newer models and cars with the fluidic designing. Like the Equus, Sonata, Elantra, etcetc,
Its not as much fun as a Ford Focus, not as quiet as a VW Golf, not as upmarket as an Astra and the exterior design is not as head turning as a Mazda 3 and a Honda Civic has a bigger boot.
I think thats the most comparisons Mat has ever made.
Golf quiet????? You are joking man...
it's better than skoda , since it brings something new to the market .. Skoda did nothing to make the market better.. It;s just another VW stupid clone .. So i would pick any time Hyundai over skoda
Up to recently, Skoda has had abysmal styling in my opinion. Both inside and out.
I don't have that problem.. have an i30, and the windows may fog up on snowy days when all the snow on my shoes melt (as does it in my mother's Volkswagen and Renault, it also happened in my old Volvo V40).
The automatic AC in the i30 clears it up nice and fast though, unlike how it was in my Volvo V40... I had to wipe the windows from the inside all the time on that one...
very good review, good presenter,he was test driving the old model i30,new model is a lot better, hyundai are getting better ther making a name for them selfs
Sold this for a 2020 VW Polo and wow the difference is huge. Can't believe I was driving this junk for so long. Got the job done I suppose.
Not the best looking car, but it's really nice to drive and high assembly qualitiy.
@imagewise you are actually the only person that says that! go buy a french or italian car that will make you cry your money for spending on them
I like the test, but why does he compare it to five or more different cars? That doesn't make sense to me. There is always better car for specific use. Like Mercedes is more powerful, more quiet etc. Don't tell me Astra, Focus and others are same price as this in UK. In Czech Rep, each of them is at least 2-3000 pounds more expensive then Hyundai with similar configuration...
can you please test the new ford focus, because auto express says that the handling is a good as ever and whatcar says its horrible, I really don't know who I have to believe.
Why this guy like to titles his videos like about cars...2007 - 2011 models are not at all the same cars.
nobody can replace jeremy clarkson, james may and richard hamond
This car just looks so gooood.
-sigh-
Have you even sat in one? Cheap plastics? Honda and Toyota use even cheaper plastic and vinyls.
Car critics have said that Hyundai has EXCELLENT quality.
Vauxhall Astra Or Ford Focus Volkswagen Golf
new thinking new posibilities!!!
why is it an 02 plate???
or is that just me???
These cars today are quite cheap, in my country I can buy 2011 i30 wagon for 3900 euros. For the same price I can also buy 6 year older Passat or Avensis.
Focus or this car.. ?
buying 2011 , diesel ...any advice ?
hey! car reviewer guy, what is your height?
2009-2015 review CarBuyer
I'm in love with it, but I'm not sure which petrol engine is the better deal for me - the 1.4 or the 1.6, and when I look at forums etc. I get conflicting ideas. It would be a city car, highway only about once a month. If anyone has experience with these two and would like to share it (and what to look out for when buying) it would mean a lot...
Have you bought it yet?
@@DawnVengeanceX I still can't find good info to help me out. Some say the 1.4 is too loud on motorways and too slow, some say it's (somehow) got even vetter accelaration than the 1.6, but I can't find a significantly legit source yet...
@@pastir91did you get it? As i will be using on the motorway also.
Well thats about the worst argument I have read in a while. Congratulations.
@alphaganja um i have a ford focus st black 2.5l 2009 facelift, why would I want that?enlighiten me
Matt Watson?
Does anyone see a hint of mk2 ford focus in the front end?
@H3lloSE depend on where do you live but i'll give you 2 reasons, first where i live registration for cars with engines over 2 liters is pretty much expensive. for 2.5 TD w124 mercedes you need ~500 euros every year for registration only, for 3 liter it's something like 800 euros. and it's a car with some age.
second reason is the name of your focus, ST, if you dont know ST stand for "sanitary towel", nuff said
why are you looking at this if u have good new car?
i'm thinking of buying new i30
i have hyundai 2010,automatic terrible conditioning, windows fog up air con doesn't clear even on fine day very disappointing anybody have these problems, hard to drive at night because of this.
Ca any body tell me why are there two versions of front design ? thanks
I learned to drive a similar model. Nice car, but I absolutely hated the Auto. I could shift faster and smoother in a manual. I couldn't drive the manual, though, because my size 13 feet kept getting stuck under the brake pedal everytime I went lifted off the clutch.
Would you like to hit the car more?
Vauxhall Astra
True, was about to say the same thing. It's not logical
Cool car!!
@igorikie ele falou que o i30 é bom bagarai!
Im currently taking my driving lessons in the I35 and its amazing to drive but its nothing like my friends mazda RX8 but of course it wouldnt be but still a great car
this car would look better if the steering wheel was on the correct side of the vehicle.

We have a 2012 2.0 automatic and we've had a few problems. One is an annoying rattle from the dashboard and the automatic gear box is probably the worst I've ever encountered. We are going to sell it and buy a Japanese brand.
