I bought this car back in 2013 and drove it 3 years and 80K miles. I had zero problems with it. I foolishly put new tires on the car a month before trading it and had the alignment checked. It was still in perfect alignment. Never had a car stay that true after all those miles. btw...I traded it in on a 2016 Elantra SE sedan. I must say the two cars, although same drive train, are different on the road. The GT definately had a sportier crisper feel whereas the sedan is softer and cushier over all. The sedan also is quiter and gets a tad better mpg. I miss the hatchback practicality of the GT but I like the looks of the sedan better. The GT was my first Hyundai and I must admit I'm sold. A Hyundai enthusiast.
My son has just bought one of these, a 2016 plate and its in mint condition as it only has 14,500 miles on it, and such a lovely car he's well happy with it. Engine so nice and quiet, it's got everything you could want or need in a car, this is in 2024
I bought one of these recently partly based on this review, exactly the same car as the one in this video except mine is petrol. I'm very happy with it :)
just purchased a 2016 Hyundai i30 here in Australia. Our models come with more standard kit than the model you reviewed here. mine has parking sensors, reverse camera, touch screen multimedia centre, cruise control, and apple car play. only downside is there is no CD player. car is amazing, drives well; build quality is excellent. all this is standard on the "active" version (base model). Australia is the "biggest market" for the i30 globally. I looked at several other cars including the VW polo (great car, too small for me as I am 6ft 3). Toyota corolla (looked boring) and ford fiesta (too expensive). it was either the i30 or a Kia Cerato; as soon as I threatened to look at the Cerato, they matched the drive away price on the cerato for the i30. I am extremely happy with my choice, as the engine has a decent power output compared to the corolla or the polo. another big factor was the 5 year/unlimited km warranty. No wonder Holden and ford struggle to sell the Cruze and fiesta respectively.
Kane K Good purchase. I am looking at a few cars in the class, i30, Cerato etc. Wife is a Corolla girl but these are all good. I do like the Mazda 3 except for the rear leg room is not all that flash and I am hearing issues with the Golf-Jetta though I like them too. But the two (good) Korean bramd do have an ace. Warranty. Though the Lancer also has a 5 year warranty it seems very boring but is rock solid too. But the i30 I think is one of the best buys going around.
Yeah totally agree. Honestly, I have had this car 2 months; done only 1200km but it has not missed a beat. fuel consumption is around 9.2L/100km. I honestly can not fault this car at all. Wheels gave the 1.8 "nu" engine a bad wrap, but I myself find it very responsive and it has a nice note for a small car. I did like the cerato when I looked at them. went to the dealer more than once, and no one approached me for a test drive; dad said "well they look busy". I went to Hyundai 3 times over 6 months and the same girl came and saw me each time:) she also rang me after I purchased the car to ask how it was going, was I happy with it etc.
That lip is not an issue. We have had a full shop, my bags and a wheelchair in the boot. It is seriously impressive on space. Sometimes you do not see the full benefit in these clips but it is an impressive car. No serious issues in 6 years of ownership.
I LOVE THIS CAR! I'm learning to drive in one and it's BRILLAINT. I honestly have no complaints about it!!!!! I get so excited for my driving lessons, even though they cost me £25 lol.
I have one for a year (august 28). The car is roomy even in the backseat (I'm 1.80 m) with good legroom (more than ford focus, toyota corolla ascent, mazda 3 neo), mine is the 1.6 gas and have enough power for a city car. Have electric folding mirrors, motorized tilting headlight (Almost standard on Europe, but not here in Panamá) wich you need to manually tilt in case you feel they're not bright enough, the front seats are very confortable, There are not cup holders in the back, but the center seat is more confortable than the ones with cup holders, I don't really know any problem with the AC, here in Panama is very hot, and the AC performs really good. The front pillar are thick and it may reduce visibility, that´s true. I bought the i30 over the focus because of the interior design that is simply far better than the focus, The fuel economy ir great. The exterior is really beautiful, a more complex design that turn heads. The handling is soft and the car is very quite. this is more like the elantra hatckback. May be you like the design may be not. May be you don´t like Korean cars, but honestly, this car is amaizing for the tag price and I highly recomend the i30.
Hello, I plan to buy used Hyndai i30 .Can you give me update on how the car serve you over the years if you still drive it. I will buy it used one and the price is ok. Thanks in advance
@@VojnovMusic I highly recommed this car, if you can get it for a good price. I have had it for a month, and like the comment says it is really soft to drive. If your looking for a budget car, this is the one. Of course you can get the ford focues/fiesta, leon ibizia and skodas. It all depends on the price
I have owned this car for almost 2 months now after a meticulous 6-month research for what to buy, and I am happy to see that my choice proved to be a very good one. Highly recommended.
I bought this car on 2013 in great part due to this review. It was my first car. Now I'm selling it and getting a Tesla Model Y. It was a great buy though.
Best feature: the HID adaptive headlights, also when the lights turn on when unlocking, great at night especially when someone is parking ‘too’ close to you. Surprising feature: the steering weight control: comfort in town Sport on the motorway brilliant balance. Also Love the flashing brake lights too when coming to a sudden stop (Example: Fast A40, a Porsche had them ahead and it was really useful to see him brake to a stop as visibility was poor that day in heavy rain). I love the push button start and the keyless entry. The puddle lighting is great too. We bought the top spec premium but got some reason we didn’t spec forward parking sensors, so have to get them installed sometime soon. Oh and FINALLY the reversing camera, because it only comes out when it’s being used, as it’s hidden, it is always clear and the camera is excellent, the best city feature for safety. Oh the pressure gauges on the tyres brilliant for my other half who doesn’t do a monthly check of pressures... oh -7i ch allows in great are sexy!
I had a Hyundai Amica. Brought it at 20k miles for £1,400, died at 100k. In that time I have NEVER REPLACED A SINGLE PART. I NEVER EVER SERVICED it. I only changed rear bulbs 2-3 times which cost £2 each. £5 fuel gave me 80 miles. Drove it 80k miles, had a oil leak which made it loose power, in 9 years of owning car i though time for change. Sold car £400 even though it had major oil problem. Such a reliable car, cannot fault. I brought a VW GOLF which i spent 1k in repairs in 1 year... PIECE OF SHIT, Hyundai are really good cars.
Have had this car (1.4 petrol) for 6.5 years... awesome car that I plan to have for at least another 6 years. I never even noticed the glove compartment is refrigerated, ha! Gotta use it on my next summer trip to Italy :)
Renting one of these for 3 weeks from Green Motion. Driven it already from Heathrow to Milton Keynes and then further up to Newcastle. Pretty much everything this guy has said is true with this car. Really comfortable, handles well on the road at speed and I'm loving the connectivity with my iPhone. The windscreen pillars are a tad bit wide sadly and the small rear window can have really bad visibility due to the tiny wiper it has but overall absolute joy to drive. Highly recommended.
Drove one today, the base model. Excellent drive, very nippy and felt really nailed to those winding uneven NZ roads. Think we will see lots of these on the roads soon.
I'm here in the U.S. and drive the 2013 Hyundai Elantra ( the I30 in the UK). You get a lot of amenities standard for you money, that are not offered in other models, or require upgrading to the next tier which ends up costing you more money. I've had my Elantra over a year with no problems. I average 31 mpg per tank of gas (combined city/highway driving - though mostly city driving). I have achieved over 40 mpg on highway road trips, by keeping my speed consistent, using cruise control and not driving the car like I had just stole it. I didn't buy it with the mindset that its a sport car, and therefore don't expect to handle as such. I bought it for its improved reliability, long warranty (5 year/60k miles versus the usual 3 year/ 36k miles warranty coverage given to most cars here in the U.S.), the gas mileage, the look of the car (inside and out), the amenities, the safety features and finally the price (under $20k). The Hyundai is definitely worth a second look at, if you are looking to make a car purchase.
Groover Cro, as I've stated in another comment the USDM Elantra Sedán and Coupé (latter until '14 model year) rides on a 2" (5 cm.) longer wheelbase (also the USDM Kia Forte) than the (C-sized) GT hatchback (which is EU's i30 and the base for EU's 5 door Kia Cee'd and 3 door Pro Cee'd, but imported from KR). The Getz was replaced by the i20 (USDMs Accent and Kia Rio are slightly larger B's). The i10 (also the Kia Picanto) are city (A) cars never been sold in USDM.
I like your reviews. You cover quite a number of things that are important to potential purchasers. Because I am in Australia and we drive on the same side of the road as you, the controls are as we get.
true, Chairman of Volkswagen was impressed by the design of Hyundai i30 at the Motorshow in Frankfurt IAA 2011. the video clip was all over youtube. nice one, mat. you nailed it! what a considerable passionate review for a beautifully made i30. Pls maintain your humor and enthusiasm for cars. May you get to review more cars (subie impreza hatch pls:-)
Currently driving this car as a rental on my holiday. No GPS. It's an ok car but it's definitely not made for the twisty roads. The 'A' pillar is bloody massive.
Yeah I just got one myself. Only a 1.4l diesel engine, but it's still fun to drive and perfect for my daily commute. Was a "special edition" with the large touchscreen nav system and everything...
They didn't create the fuel efficiency claims. The EPA did. The EPA made adjustments in the MPG course. Not only that, Hyundai/KIA are only paying for a only a few models affected.
It looked like a nice car. But my biggest concern would be where Matt pointed out that rear visibility is not so great. There's no getting around the fact that that's dangerous.
I have 2013 model 1.6 crdi its fantastic such a nice drive i had corsa vxr and the mpg was terrible . The mpg on this is amazing im getting 68.2 mpg on motorway runs sometimes 72 mpg fantastic car.
Marko, kako si zadovoljan do sad? Jesi imao nekih problema do sad? Koji motor i kakva mu je potrosnja po gradu? Ovaj i30 mi je usao u uzi izbor, pa se dvoumim.
Hyundai and KIA have made loads of improvements on their cars over the last few years in all aspects specially their quality. One thing that bothers me though is that most of their lineup has only one air bag which is kinda a deal breaker for the safety conscious buyer and i believe there r a lot of them out there :)
you are the best presenter ever, I don't know your name but your are amazing, I do like the way how you explain things. you are talented, I see most of your review, you must actually get the title of best car presenter in the world.
The 2014 model is safer than a volvo V40 for your kids. ncap rating for volvo for your kids is 75%, This Hyndai is 90%! So much for the safe volvo. Well done Hyndai.
I was very impressed by this car, heck it has a central console with air vents for the rear passengers in a segment where you usually just get vents under the front seat, how cool is that.
***** I don't know where you're from but here on planet earth Ford's are very reliable haha! (Toyota's are too though). I have to agree that they are kinda Ford fanatics but Ford's do drive well to be honest so they're quite right about that.
***** Look at their awards on their site and see how much they like to suck Ford's dick [/sarcasm]. All important motoring journalists agree that the Ford Focus/ST and the Fiesta/ST are more fun to drive than their rivals.
The US will be getting this car as a replacement for the Elantra Touring, dubbing it the Elantra GT, with Hyundai marketing it as a 5-door hatchback instead of as a wagon. However, one of the main differences will be that the US version will get the same 1.8L DOHC engine as the regular US-spec Elantra. It will also have a stiffer suspension than the 4-door Elantra, which is tuned for comfort.
This car only got released in Australia today. I went and had a look, but am waiting for more info and the dealer to have a bit more training. It feels much better than the outgoing car though
I had a Hyundai I30 for three years, and I've just replaced it with a Hyundai IX20 because I needed more space. With the IX20 the 3-speed auto box soaks up lots of power and changes at too high a speed, so throttle response is almost non-existent. Economy is poor too, but otherwise the IX20 does all that's asked of it. (I just came back from 2 weeks' holiday,in a place about 180 miles of motorway from home. The car cruised at well above the speed limit (70 mph) and returned about 50 mpg. My previous car, an I30 diesel auto was just as fast, a bit quicker and did over 70 mpg, but it was a much smaller car. Will I have another Hyundai? You can bet on it!
Who are the badge snobs that have an issue with the WRC constructors champion for 2019 & 2020? I drive one of these i30s ('63 plate, pre-facelift) and its a great car. Once you figure out how best to use a 6 speed gearbox with a 1.4L engine (my previous car was a 1.8L with a 5 speed) the performance is actually pretty brisk. I've seen too many reviews of this car that say "it's more practical than a focus but not as fun" - i think it's every bit as fun once you've spent some time with it and learned how to extract the performance from it. Cracking car all round!
@shoelace510 It depends on cars. If a Car is AWD or RWD then it needs more space in the area behind and under seats than if it was FWD, so its cargo space is designed differently.
I say 'ol chap...a mighty fine review of that Hyundai i30 (Elantra in N.A,). Further to all that Hyundai is now the 'go to' car company here in the U S and Canada. The Elantra is second in sales to the Honda Civic and outselling the Corolla now.
I drove all the cars in mid-size range and chose the new i30 It didnt have the economy of Mazda Skyactive, the quietness of the Civic the performance of the Focus 2.0L but at AU$22k for the auto it was the best buy by a proverbial mile. The features, the warranty, servicing, style, performance and comfort will appeal to anyone wanting value for their $.
Another great review but Matt, you sounded a bit out of breath climbing around in the back there. Put the snow board away and get out for a couple of runs!
Why should it close your windows? What if you wanted to sit in the car while you waited for someone to go get some groceries? Why shouldn't you be allowed to have the windows open while the doors are locked?
Mario Losberg Agree if you look from the front in 35 degree angle it's impressive, so cute and smart look. Or if you standing a side of the car 45 degree angel look, this car look just beautiful.
Thanks to this review I've had mine i30 for almost a year now, and I couldn't be happier. Over 20k kilometers (13k miles) driven and not a single problem yet. I go for a random test drive from time to time, just to stay informed about other cars. Didn't find anything overall better to this day.
Best family car in da market for sure.hyundai you deserve big solute..keep coming up with new car.can't wait for da next version of ix35 to come...well done HYUNDAI.
I’m currently learning in one and absolutely love it I’m thinking of buying the i20 as sadly I can’t afford the i30 but wanna keep the Hyundai theme is the harsh seat rumour in the i20 true??
***** I have been in a few, it seems alright to me, if someone is that claustrophobic they shouldn't be driving. They seem to do it to higher end cars mostly.
Super_Slav i didnt say it gave people claustrophobia I meant it makes the interior appear and feel smaller, most people like a light airy feel to their cars dark colours give a sense of less space its a basic design rule for all spaces be it car or room in a house
***** I thought you meant it was bad for people with claustrophobia, I didn't get that impression when I was in them other than the Porsche Cayman but that would feel small regardless of colour, but the Evoke still feels nice and big, and just looks nicer with a black interior especially because it matches the dash colour, also black ages allot better and doesn't get any discolouration from UV.
Hello Mat,you are doing great job, thanks for reviewing i30!please share your thought i30 1.6 crdi with 6 speed automatic. How is the performans and responsing transmission with diesel?Good luck you are seriously doing great job once again!
I heard the newer models have way better coating and the rust problem is gone. Before I got my i30 I owned a Getz (yes..awful car...) and that didn't show any more rust after 7 years than my father's and grandfather's Mercs have over the years...so it all depends on usage and maintenance, I guess...although they both probably take better care of their cars than I do. Plus theirs are parked in garages while mine is not. Sound is superb as well btw...great on MP3s and even better on BT with EQ on.
i'm waiting for the new c'eed review, then i'll have to choose between this and the kia. The kia looks more aggressive in my opinion. What would you guys choose ?

bought a fiesta as a result of his recommendation, and he's right about every aspect. Goodwork !
This is our second car - I'm 6'3 and the space for such a car is extremely impressive. I'm extremely pleased and impressed with it!
Pandemonium 68
I love my 2015 i30. The best little car for commuting!
I took a test drive the other day and i loved it! Loads of space, easy and practical! This guy speaks the truth ;)
true, Chairman of Volkswagen was impressed by the design of Hyundai i30 at the Motorshow in Frankfurt IAA 2011. the video clip was all over youtube.
nice one, mat. you nailed it! what a considerable passionate review for a beautifully made i30.
Pls maintain your humor and enthusiasm for cars. May you get to review more cars (subie impreza hatch pls:-)
Welcome back Mat. i30 looks allot better then the old one.
Anyone notice BIG FOOT in the background at 3:22?
It looked like a nice car. But my biggest concern would be where Matt pointed out that rear visibility is not so great.
There's no getting around the fact that that's dangerous.
I have 2013 model 1.6 crdi its fantastic such a nice drive i had corsa vxr and the mpg was terrible . The mpg on this is amazing im getting 68.2 mpg on motorway runs sometimes 72 mpg fantastic car.
This video helped me buy my i30 in 2015.
Best buy.
Marko, kako si zadovoljan do sad? Jesi imao nekih problema do sad? Koji motor i kakva mu je potrosnja po gradu?
Ovaj i30 mi je usao u uzi izbor, pa se dvoumim.
The problem with Prius mainly is that to manufacture the batteries, you damage the enviroment more than running the Golf for some years....
Is it really do 67 mpg?
I own a Veloster... I'm amazed on the build quality.... :D
I was very impressed by this car, heck it has a central console with air vents for the rear passengers in a segment where you usually just get vents under the front seat, how cool is that.
a excellent and comfortable car to drive, not to mention excellent mpg if driven sensibly
Is ford focus the ultimate car? they always compare focus/fiesta with everything!!!!
True! Every time they say:"It's not nearly as fun to drive as..." I'm already saying Focus of Fiësta in my head!
***** I don't know where you're from but here on planet earth Ford's are very reliable haha! (Toyota's are too though). I have to agree that they are kinda Ford fanatics but Ford's do drive well to be honest so they're quite right about that.
*****
Look at their awards on their site and see how much they like to suck Ford's dick [/sarcasm]. All important motoring journalists agree that the Ford Focus/ST and the Fiesta/ST are more fun to drive than their rivals.
Dulf Nordensvärd I can't stand Ford... 😕
Ford Focus is a terrible car, so many faults it's no comparison to Hyundai i30.
It will also have a stiffer suspension than the 4-door Elantra, which is tuned for comfort.
just bought this car a few days ago and I love it!
Had one of these for my driving lesson this week...bloody nice car!
Congrats Hyundai you deserve it !
And thank you Matt for not being obtuse and giving the contenders a real chance
It depends on what model you want...
The I30 5doors 1,6 CRDi aut. style does 18,2km/l
good to see matt back
This car only got released in Australia today.
You can bet on it!
the 2012-present Hyundai i30/ Hyundai Elantra GT (USA) is assembled in
Nošovice, Czech Republic
MATT IS BACK !
The i40 is related to the Sonata, for which we only get a 4-door sedan. The i30 is related to the Elantra.
Mat's BACK!!!! thank god..
I bought my Hyundai 130 in 2009. It's a great little car and my second Hyundai. It is vivid Blue and her name is Kitty2
@shoelace510 It depends on cars. If a Car is AWD or RWD then it needs more space in the area behind and under seats than if it was FWD, so its cargo space is designed differently.
Nice looking car
Good review. Hyundai has really upped their game.
I am really considering to buy this car! Great car! Hyundai makes many progress! The others manufactures are now warned!
Another great review but Matt, you sounded a bit out of breath climbing around in the back there. Put the snow board away and get out for a couple of runs!
It is also called the Elantra GT in USA and Canada
Going to own one very soon....can't wait!
Why should it close your windows? What if you wanted to sit in the car while you waited for someone to go get some groceries? Why shouldn't you be allowed to have the windows open while the doors are locked?
The best looking car in this class..
Mario Losberg Agree if you look from the front in 35 degree angle it's impressive, so cute and smart look. Or if you standing a side of the car 45 degree angel look, this car look just beautiful.
Great Styling! Well come back Matt :P
5 year warranty? What happened to the 7 year warranty?
Thats KIA ;)
So it is!
KIA also limits mileage while Hyundai is unlimited.
How hard is it for manufacturers to make black roof lining and pillar plastics, it makes interiors look better.
But more claustrophobic
*****
I have been in a few, it seems alright to me, if someone is that claustrophobic they shouldn't be driving.
*****
I thought you meant it was bad for people with claustrophobia, I didn't get that impression when I was in them other than the Porsche Cayman but that would feel small regardless of colour, but the Evoke still feels nice and big, and just looks nicer with a black interior especially because it matches the dash colour, also black ages allot better and doesn't get any discolouration from UV.
Great review , its seems hyundai has improved a lot over these years. I would love to own one of these..
Who came here from 2022 to see mats evolution lemme tell you he is the same
Me
His style is instantly recognisable but he is noticeably less snarky in these earlier videos
@@Jwm367t yeah I mean it was his new to the job days
Hello Mat,you are doing great job, thanks for reviewing i30!please share your thought i30 1.6 crdi with 6 speed automatic. How is the performans and responsing transmission with diesel?Good luck you are seriously doing great job once again!
actually the bit about vw executives isn't a rumour. video of that motorshow is here on youtube with vw ceo inspecting the car.
Cant wait for the new 3-Series review that is due soon!
Because all models for this year are already anounced or in the market. Dont you know that?
I've got this car in black and I must say I love it great car
Loved watching this ❤️
picked up my top of the line Premium crdi auto today - VERY happy! especially when i compared it to golf... ;)
I did love the snowboard test!
i'm waiting for the new c'eed review, then i'll have to choose between this and the kia. The kia looks more aggressive in my opinion. What would you guys choose ?
