OK. I just finished all three. These are awesome. They are by far the most in deapth videos that are out there. Great job James. One question. Do you ever take the handle appart and lube it up?
Thanks Gene, really appreciate the comment buddy!! I answered this on messenger but wanted to put it here as well in case anyone else has this question. I believe the bearings in the handle are sealed, in which they require no maintenance. From my understanding, once they go bad you just replace them. All I do is put the drop of oil behind the knobs as you see in the video. A lot of my reels are 4-5 years old and the handles are just as smooth as they were when I bought them.
Insert a pick into the hole in the end cap and lift it off. Underneath is a screw. Remove that and you'll see a bearing on each end of the handle shaft. These bearings are 8 x 5 x 2.5 mm.
The set-up of this video and the level of explaining is great. But what enjoyed me in particular is the following. I'm Dutch and thus as a not native speaker used to speak BBC english. This is an example of an American speaker I can understand 100% !. Thumps up!
Thank you so much for these videos. My old Pflueger Patriarch finally got its first real cleaning! It’s more than 10 years old and feeling better than ever.
GREAT videos on taking apart a reel, cleaning, lubricating and then putting it back together! I followed your steps to complete both my JM Carbon and JM Signature and they are SMOOTH beyond belief now. I did notice there were a few extra washers under the handle on the Signature, but I had my schematic and easily found what order they went on. The only areas I had any "problems" (if you'd call them that) were putting the smaller gear with the white piece back on, in the correct way, but there is only one way and you darn well know when you get it. The other was learning that when it's time to reassemble make sure the casting trigger is not "Down" (engaged). I just couldn't get things to fit nicely until I got the trigger back up (I had it down from greasing it). Thank You so much for putting these vids out here. I never had the confidence to do this until I watched them and now I'm sure to get years of happiness out of reels that I really like!
Hey Mark, really appreciate the comment man. It's comments like this that make me want to continue what I'm doing. It's amazing how much smoother you can make your real than how it came from the factory. I prefer to oil some things that they grease and then they over grease on top of that (which is just to get through the warranty stages) but it kills performance. You're correct on the extra washers, the Morris has a 14-lb drag system compared to the 10-lb system on the reel in this video. Like you said, most of these parts can only go on one way, just take your time, keep your schematic handy and you'll do just fine...plus you get the satisfaction out of doing it yourself. Thanks for watchin man and good luck this season!!
I noticed I had a broken line guide and got the part free from the manufacturer but I was nervous as hell to take it apart even though I'm pretty mechanically inclined. The two pressure washers needing to face each other was clutch! The diagram for the reel doesn't show those details. You're the man!
G'Day mate! I've just watched all three vids and read all questions and replies. Best how to I've seen 😍 I've allways serviced all my reels using whatever grease available. I've even used axle grease which only slows things down a tad. Living out in the sticks has its disadvantages hey 😂 I've ALLWAYS disassembled and placed parts in order so assembly is no problem. Thanks for the vids and many thanks for speaking clearly so us Ausies can understand you 😍🇦🇺✝😂
Ya, I been a subscriber forever! I have aatched that vid countless times but I aas happy when you came out with this one, helped me more due to the better quality! And I ended up buying thay quantum stuff and the swabs and shimano grease because you said so!
Hey bud, glad I was able to help you. Yeah, those first vids didn't have the best quality and that was another reason why I redid them. I've tried many different lubes and that Hot Sauce and Shimano grease are definitely the best in my opinion. Thanks for your support bud!!
I have watched many videos on reel , and bait casting maintenance. You sir, are an excellent teacher! Thank you for creating these videos. I have subscribed, and look forward to studying more.
great video, I just tried finding a parts breakdown online. I have a Quantum GMTi 1070 burner that the spool thumb release sticks on regular, but releases OK on "flip". Again, thanks for an exellent video, even when your daughter broke in to complain that Michael was making too much noise. Brings back memories, My Michael is now 40. Good times.
Thanks buddy, you're thumb bar may just need some grease on either end. Hopefully it's a simple fix for you. Yeah the kids are sure growing up fast. My youngest, Michael, is becoming quite the fisherman. I put together a video on here that has a clip of him casting in the beginning, with some pics throughout the video. Check it out if you have the time. It's called Good Times with my Boys.
@Ryan Strong...no reply button. It sounds like you have the metal washer below the main gear on backwards....kind of looks like a saw blade, try switching it and see if that works.
Haha, thanks Elijah!!! Means a lot bud!! In the beginning just take your time, take a lot of pics, get out your reel schematic (if you still have it) and you'll be fine bud. Thanks for watchin!!
Great video, I'm going to grease & oil all my reels now. I have 18 reels, so I think I'm going to be real busy after my B.A.S.S. Tourneys are over this year. Thanks again for the video!
Your welcome bud. I do 20 or so myself. It takes me a couple months to get through em all, but there's nothing else to do in the winter time so may as well get the reels ready for spring!!
Great video James.. This is pretty much what i do... I am very OCD about my reels and how i like them.. I love overhauling my reels and making them perfect
That's what I like to hear man!!! Good job!! I have vids of the Pro Qualifier on here as well, quality isn't as good but it's another detailed walk through. Either one will help you out! Thanks for watchin!!
Pretty much exactly the way I do my reels except I actually use Yamaha Marine grease with REM oil or 3 in 1 oil. My dad and grand father been doing it like that for their reels forever so I figured I'd carry it on. Never had an issue....I do really like that oil bottle though, need to find me one.. awesome in depth series.
That was a very serious cleaning and i felt like u making an art or something. Anyway, u making a great job of it. i'm new to baitcasting reel and i want to learn how to do a maintenance on my canean since i got a secondhanded and quite dirty one. Seeing how u do it make me scare a bit since i really bad with small things. Maybe i only can do basic cleaning and if i want to do really good cleaning, i have to sent to shop or someone that good of doing it. Anyway, great job and thank you.
Thank you for the comment. It's not as hard as it looks, but if you want to send it to a shop let me know, my buddy does it for a living. Thanks for watching!
Really great videos. Thank you for making these. I followed your steps exactly on my Shimano Chronarch 201E5, and at the final stage once I tightened back down the drag star/handle/nut, the whole reel locks up. Can't turn the handle, can't click the spool release button. Any idea why this might be happening?
hey man, i took my reel apart and greased it up and stuff, but when I push the button, i spin the reel but it doesn't engage or pop the button back up. Any thoughts?
OK.just find your videos todays watch them all .Great videos .Can you tell me where you get the oil your using .YOU DID A GREAT JOB ON THOSE VIDEOS WILL TRY TO DO MINE NOW .....ty very much for charing
I hope I'm not asking a previous asked question. Can you explain how you vibrate the parts? I know you mentioned that you use a hair trimmer? How does that work? Thanks in advance.
Very nice tip sir, I m from india and here I go for snakehead fishing 3-5 days a week for 2.5-4 hour. Sir my baitcasting which is Abu Garcia black max and Kastking Royale Legend. Both are now not so smooth I did oiling and greasing too. How and what reel part I do have to change or to get it as smooth as they were in new. Those are not more thank 3 year old reel. Plz respond me sir.
You could run grease down the bead of the gear cover to seal better. Keeps fine dust out. Also, one-way bearings like silicone grease, it helps the rollers grip the shaft when it's doing its anti-reverse thing.
TJ, Big bass season coming up in MN and getting prepared. Lately I've been reading diff articles on lubs to use with reel cleaning. It seems like there's been several mentions of Corrison X and Reel X. Several of the users swear by it. I know you like the Hot Sauce but do you have any experience with either of the X products? The X products have a molecular bonding that seems like it's impervious to the elements, mainly rust.
How tight do you screw the star drag down ? I just did my Johnny Morris reel and destroyed a fiber drag washer . I have no idea how I did it unless I screwed the star drag down too tight .
Just till you feel it's snug...you have to tighten it down to a certain point to get the handle back on. No clue how that would destroy a drag washer...
TackleJunky, where did you get your oil applicator bottle. I got my hot sauce oil and grease yesterday and the oil tube applies way to big of a drop of oil when applying it to the tiny bearings on the reel.
Awesome video.but i have one problem. I assembled my reel properly, but when i wanted to put the side plate back on (the side with screws) the shaft couldnt turn. How to fix this?
great video. thanks for the help. what do you do to a baitcast and spinning reel when you first get it? In terms of lube/maintenance as I have read factory is not good for long term.
I have a question & i know it might sound dumb but will this work for a Black Maxx baitcaster & Lew's Mach Speed Spool 2 . Like the channel & just became your new subscriber.
You're are truly awesome at this. I have a quick question, my reel has sort of a buzzing sound when i spin it really fast and let it fly. Is this normal? It's a Bantam Curado(Shimano in other words)
Thanks for the response. I have learned a great deal from watching your videos. They gave me the knowledge and courage to service my own reels. Looking forward to seeing more. Regards, Lynn
Was wondering if you could help me. I bought a used pinnacle that was seriously dirty, was used for salt water fishing. I cleaned it, greased it, oiled it up. Followed your vids as much as I could, mine had a few less bearings and washers. Long story short, after I engage the real when I spin the handle it doesn't pop back into position. Besides my trouble your vids have been an immense help. First I had a dirty real that felt sticky, now I have a smooth clean real that doesn't function. If you have any tips, thanks
Hey man great video best one I have seen by far. I clean all my reels annually and learned some things that I wasn't doing. Hopefully I can improve on what I was doing already. I was wondering about the anti-reverse bearing. How do you know how much oil to put on it once it is degreased? I have always heard putting too much oil on them will make them slip makes me a little timid to mess with it. Also after you rinse the bearings with water, do you vibrate them again in fresh degreaser and rinse again or just blow out? How long do you use ardent cleaner before changing it out with fresh cleaner? I have been using that stuff for awhile but have always sprayed it on and cleaned the parts. Going to try soaking them this year. Sorry for all the questions fixing start the process of 20+ reels just wanted to make sure that I do it all properly. Once again thanks for the great videos and you have a awesome channel with tons of great info.
Hey buddy, appreciate the kind words. As far as how much oil to put on, I only put just a few drops and then wipe the Ardent swab like I showed. After about a month's worth of use I took a few reels apart to check things out and there was never any oil running down the drag washers, it all stayed in place. I feel that's a good amount, and they were ran all year like that with no issues. It's something you've got to keep an eye on until you have the amount to use down. Once the bearings are rinsed in water I just blow them out. I clean about 20 reels and I change it twice with that amount of reels. As long as you wipe off some of the grease before you soak the parts it doesn't get too clogged. Don't be sorry for the questions man, that's why I'm here and feel free to send me a message anytime either on here or Facebook. Good luck and appreciate the comment!!
I get asked that all the time. I spend about a few hours per reel...that's how picky I am...and there's now way it'd be worth my time to do someone else's. Trey does great work and he's a good friend of mine.
shopkarls.com/shimano-slx-baitcasting-reel If you become a member you can get that reel for 80 bucks. It's a free 30 day trial. If you choose to do that please go through this link gokarls.com/TJ81
Thanks man!! I have recently sold all of my reels to switch to a different company, but it wasn't because of any quality issues with Bass Pro. They make a solid reel for sure and one I would definitely recommend. Thanks for watchin!!
have you ever tried okuma before? i have the helios, and it preforms flawlessly, although i did throw 68 huddleston swimbaits on it for a while, that was too much for the reel but it still preforms outstanding, and for a $200 reel that's pretty good, smooth like butter and cast a mile, i'd like to try the helios air next, only 5.9oz, that's pretty good
I've been cleaning my reels since the 90's. I don't go all out like you did but you defiantly did somethings that I've never done. I had a Quantum EX500 reel before I started/knew how to tear down and clean. I did my best to get grease up inside on the big gear but my drag started to fail. I finally decided to tear into it and found the drag washers were oily probably from the grease I was improperly forcing into the reel. I was told they should be dry. I ordered new drag washers. I used hot soapy water to degrease everything and reassembled the reel. I got another 12 years out of that reel before Quantum/Zebco stopped making parts or they sold out of there inventory for that model. I've heard that most new reels drag washers require oil or grease now so how does one know what is to be used on the washers or if they are to remain dry? I was just talking to my fishing partner earlier this evening about the bearing and if you can oil them or if they are sealed bearing. His reply was he read somewhere that some reels have shielded bearings. If that's true, are shielded bearings maintenance free? I've never degreased any of my bearings, just wipe off and re-oiled. I've already cleaned and lubed 6 out of my 9 tournament reels so any changes I do will have to wait another year. A old fishing video I have talked about maintenance of reels and it stated, gears get grease, bearing get oil. You state in your video on the side plate that the one way clutch bearing which you degreased, you apply oil to. I figured since that contains roller pins and has a sleeve that surrounds it, it would also need grease for smooth operation, not oil. Can you explain why you choose oil to apply on the one way clutch bearing?
Hey Mike, carbon washers can be ran dry if you want more bite, but a fingerprint of grease is what I usually do with all my drag washers. Spool bearings are only oiled and should never be greased, but the other bearings within the reel are greased and really don't require any maintenance. I degrease them to make the reel feel a bit smoother, but once you remove the grease you have to maintain them. I've noticed over the years that a greased one way bearing can and will slip especially in colder weather...I haven't had any issues oiling them.
This is very helpful, but i have some problem when every finish Maintaining (with different baitcaster type), it seem not smoother than before, the part is always put at the right placed, and i use lube at the gear part only, and oil for the bearing. but this video is awesome bro. (Y)
OK I done everything and my drag star like when I tighten up the tension it stays against the plastic and doesn't spin fast it just stops but when I loosen a lot it spins smooth any thought please
When you push on the thumb bar and then turn the handle does the spool engage? If not then the washer with the teeth that I mentioned that is under the main gear is probably upside down. If that is not the case then is your drag all the way loose? Check those things first and then get back to me if you have any further issues.

Some I'll fish with for a little bit until they feel dry and others I've cleaned right outta the box. Depends on the reel and how it feels
Thanks again for your help. Good info in your videos. Tight lines.
finally a guy who gets me ! :)
i loved the vid man thumbs up bro
Adam Chinsiejen Thanks Adam!!
got a question.. why do you grease the paper washers?? i thought they were suppose to grip the metal ones so you'll have proper drag?
Thanks for the videos! Why do you grease the drag washers?
+DisplayName01 To ensure a smooth drag.
Man ur a life saver!!! Awesome vid thx
You know kids dad, they've got to, and are going to finish what they've got to say. I actually go a chuckle out it. Its all good
I have a question & i know it might sound dumb but will this work for a Black Maxx baitcaster & Lew's Mach Speed Spool 2 . Like the channel & just became your new subscriber.
You're are truly awesome at this. I have a quick question, my reel has sort of a buzzing sound when i spin it really fast and let it fly. Is this normal? It's a Bantam Curado(Shimano in other words)
I'm sure it's just bearing noise. Nothing to worry about.
if it weren't for your video my reel would still be apart! Thanks! i subscribed
No problem! Thanks for watching!
Thanks I understand now how it works.
NCTORO You're welcome!!
Great video. Do you oil brass bushings on reels that do not have bearings?
Thank you and yeah I will put a drop of oil on a swab and then wipe it around the bushing.
Thanks for the response. I have learned a great deal from watching your videos. They gave me the knowledge and courage to service my own reels. Looking forward to seeing more.
Regards,
Lynn
That's great Lynn, glad my videos helped you out. Appreciate you watching!!
If you have any tips, thanks
skubadoobie I believe you have the metal washer that's under the main gear upside down...flip it over.
Good luck and appreciate the comment!!
when I put mine back together the handle is really tight, how do you put the star drag back on properly?
Depends on the reel. Some screw on and others you have to hold in place until you get the handle on.
Excellent videos !
Thanks Larry!
I have an old Abu Garcia ultra mag and I took it loose and I can't get it to work any info would help
Do you store the reel with the drag loose or tight?
+Efren Tumbaga Loose so the washers have a chance to expand.
Do you service other people's reels? If so how do i get a hold of ? thx
+john clark Hey bud, I don't but Trey Harpel does and you can contact him on facebook or his website threeltuningandcleaning.com
Man really wish you did after watching that video. .awesome video btw.
I get asked that all the time. I spend about a few hours per reel...that's how picky I am...and there's now way it'd be worth my time to do someone else's. Trey does great work and he's a good friend of mine.
could u send a link of the reel price and would u recommend it ? i have a $150 total.
shopkarls.com/shimano-slx-baitcasting-reel
If you become a member you can get that reel for 80 bucks. It's a free 30 day trial. If you choose to do that please go through this link gokarls.com/TJ81
Do you oil or grease that tiny bearing on the outside of the reel in the left hand corner next to the spool when opened?
Because my lews tourn. Mb has a extra lube port on the brakes and it looks like Grease brand new out of the box?
Oh Yes!,nice job thank you!👍
Appreciate you! 👊
Great Video!
well done mate, very nice, informative video, definitely will come in handy for many people, how do you like those BPS reels?
Thanks man!! I have recently sold all of my reels to switch to a different company, but it wasn't because of any quality issues with Bass Pro. They make a solid reel for sure and one I would definitely recommend. Thanks for watchin!!
have you ever tried okuma before? i have the helios, and it preforms flawlessly, although i did throw 68 huddleston swimbaits on it for a while, that was too much for the reel but it still preforms outstanding, and for a $200 reel that's pretty good, smooth like butter and cast a mile, i'd like to try the helios air next, only 5.9oz, that's pretty good
I have not. I have a couple spinning reels coming in from Okuma to try out, but no bait casters.
you won't be disappointed with okuma, trust me
I know this video is older, but can Hot Sauce grease be used in place of the Shimano? Will it negatively affect performance?
Not that I've noticed. I used to use it for everything in the past, but I didn't want it to dye the drag washers red.
@@TackleJunky81 Thank you! Your video gave me the courage to tear mine down.
Thank you for the tutorial and thank you for not saying "uh" a dozen times too. :-)
great video!
+VJTrey1 Thank you!
What reel was that. Whatever it is it is a sharp looking reel.
That's the Bass Pro Shops Rick Clunn Signature Series Reel...it's been discontinued for a few years now.
I'm gonna see if I can find one, haha. Thanks for replying man.
This is very helpful, but i have some problem when every finish Maintaining (with different baitcaster type), it seem not smoother than before, the part is always put at the right placed, and i use lube at the gear part only, and oil for the bearing. but this video is awesome bro. (Y)
+Uyung Guslianov I appreciate the view and comment bud, thanks for watching Uyung!
OK I done everything and my drag star like when I tighten up the tension it stays against the plastic and doesn't spin fast it just stops but when I loosen a lot it spins smooth any thought please
Not sure what you mean?
Dad.... Make Micheal shut up!!! Lol nice video. Definatley will use this later
Haha, yeah, they like to butt in the vids every now and then!! Thanks for watchin bud!!
ok, I did all these steps and put it back together.. but when i turn the handles the spool does dont move yet the worm gear moves? help please
When you push on the thumb bar and then turn the handle does the spool engage? If not then the washer with the teeth that I mentioned that is under the main gear is probably upside down. If that is not the case then is your drag all the way loose? Check those things first and then get back to me if you have any further issues.
Please post lucana tornando baitcasting reel assemble
thanks for the videos.
You're welcome!
Nice video
Thanks!!
So ..how much do you charge to do a reel? My fingers are not that nimble anymore.
I only do my own, but a buddy of mine does it for a living. Thkustoms.com or you can hit him up on Facebook...Trey Harpel.
GOOD JOB.
Thank you!

+azmi osman No problem! Thanks for watching!
I have like three extra washers
Any idea why my drag slips every time i put it back together after relubing?
Possibly to much grease.
TackleJunky81 ok thanks! Couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this video. It’s the best one out there!
How to maintain the spinning reels?
y bbeejk My spinning reels are new at the moment and I won't be taking them apart for awhile.
What is difference between hot sauce grease and shimano grease?
+Kanki To be honest I'm not sure on the difference between the 2, I use the Shimano on parts that i don't want the red dye on.
+TackleJunky81 I see. I'm going to service my baitcaster for the first time and these videos show me that it's not so difficult. So huge thanks to you! :)
No problem bud!
Excelent video, muy detallado...
Thank you!
Hola, tengo un reel ardent 100 que no se como remover el spool para darle mantenimiento.
When I turn the Handel my main gear doesn't spin. Please help
+Jon Patrick Powers Was this reel taken apart?
I broke my reel when I took it apart and I put it back together and the drag won't work
My reel is nothing like that and I don’t know how to put it back together
But then again it is a 40 dollar baitcast reel from Walmart
I can't put my drag star thing back on please help
Whats the issue?
did what you did didnt lose nothing i put it together when i click the button to free spool it wont click back up just goes limp slides up and down with no effort? know what i did wrong im a little pissed lol.
Do you mean the handle won't engage after you pushed the thumb bar? If so you have the washer that's under the gear on backwards.
yeah thanks i figured it out after a while lol
