I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

I did it! It's not too bad and once done it will be really easy to do again. The only two things I was confused about was at 10:41 I can't see which side of that washer faces out. And the pinion yoke, you flipped it around off camera so I got confused about which side faces out. (It's the side with the most metal showing.)
The razor method works. First time I did it I let the bearings soak 24 hours in hot water and dish detergent, changing the water out with more hot. After doing that two or three days until i had time to, still had tons vibrate out. Just make sure you see action on top of the water like micro ripples, then make sure you keep it going long enough. Still took around 4 min before trash really started breaking loose.
great vid man! i think this is the most thorough vid i have seen on disassembling a casting reel. most videos just show taking off the side plates and cleaning the gears only. i'm still intimidated to try fully disassembling my reels but eventually i'll have to do it.

yeap, i think i just need to take that first step. i have a daiwa tierra and i never really fish anymore because i dropped the spool while cleaning the reel and put a small nick on the edge. so now when i reel i hear a constant grinding.

I use can of air the psi is lower the a air compressor. I also use simple green to both steps works great.

Oranj Peelz is the last thing you want touching your bearings. It will corrode the metal, I suggest dipping the bearings in aliphatic naphtha to remove grease, give it a quick shake to dry and then immediately dip it in oil. Avoid degreased bearings get too much contact with air because oxygen will oxidize the bare metal and reduce the performance of bearing. This is the reason why they use grease for bearings because oil runs off and dries overtime, grease does not.

My Lew's got dragged through some sand and now it won't reel in right and it's making a crunching sound. Im pretty sure there's just a bunch of sand in the gears. Hopefully cleaning it will fix it cause both of my reels are out of commission right now.

What about an ultrasonic cleaner for the bearings? you think that would work to degrease them?

I took my reel apart and cleaned it but now it feels tight while turning the Handel spool turns free but cranking the Handel has a lot of drag and ideal what I could have done wrong
Carla Baisden Sounds like a spacing issue to me. Look at your schematic and make sure that you have all of the washers in the right spots.
nice instructions. why did you put some bearings in one type of cleaner and other bearings in a different cleaner?
Spool bearings are only oiled from factory, other bearings are greased which I like to degrease and oil. You don't have to do that...keeping grease in them is fine.
the idea then is to have all bearings with just oil and none with grease --is that correct?
@@charlesyoung4744 With grease they don't need to be maintained that often...most likely most guys don't even touch the bearings that are greased. It makes the reel feel much smoother, but once you remove the grease you'll need to maintain them. This is how I like to clean my reels. Don't feel like you have to degrease the bearings...just worry about the spool bearings which are only oiled and all you'll ever want to do to them is oil them.

At 2.19 you take off the plate with two washers. The washer both have a little bend to them. Is it suppose to be like that, a did so what way do they go?
Yes, they should be cupped towards each other.
A few questions about the Ardent cleaner: it's safe to use on your plastic components and your paper disks in your drag system? I'm new to all of this and I guess I'd be a little leery about throwing paper into a solvent without knowing what I was doing. You also said that you soak the side cover. The Ardent cleaner doesn't harm the painted finish on the outside of that cover?
I can only speak for what I've done. I've soaked pretty much everything in that cleaner, including the drag washers, and the only thing that I've ever had an issue with was the rubber O- ring that is on the side cover under the spool tension knob. It made the O-ring expand. I've never ran into any issues with paint or any other parts. Again, that's just with the reels that I've used it on...which have been all BPS reels.
Man, I should have put my hand over it like you suggested, but my clamp thing that holds the bearing shot out and I can't find it, do I have to have it? Or can I go without?

I have a Shimano citica baitcaster when I click the Reel handle after casting sometimes my reel will still go forward and I get a backlash don't know why this is happening do you know the issue
Is there a reason why you didn't soak the spool bearing? I'm guessing that it probably didn't come from the factory with grease, but if it did, is it ok to remove, soak and reinstall like the other bearings?
Hey Mark, spool bearings should never come packed in grease. You can remove the bearing if you would like, but I can clean it easy enough while its on the spool shaft. If possible I avoid taking the bearing off so I don't damage the pin or shaft.

Another question for ya: how long do you usually soak your parts in the Ardent solution? Also, what if you don't have any compressed air or hair trimmer, can you clean them just as well with some old fashioned elbow grease? Thanks!!
Ryan Moore I'm just guessing here, but I probably soak them anywhere from 15-20 minutes, give or take a few. Basically, I just take everything apart, soak the parts and when I'm done cleaning the frame up I take it all out. If you don't have a compressor or hair trimmer you can just leave the bearings soak in the degreaser for a longer period of time. I've never done that so I can't give you an estimated time, but I know of some guys who've left them in over night and then some for a couple of hours. Then just let them air dry completely.

+Matt Cormier Thanks Matt! Take out the screw in the thumb bar and it will pull out on the handle side. Obviously you have to have the reel taken apart to get it out.

The Palm side of the PBS Bionic Plus won't twist at all. It belongs to my young grandson. It appears that the lever that you push on the back to unlock it is not engaging or broken. He's had it a couple of years and it has never been opened.How do we get it open?
To be honest I'm not familiar with that reel so I can't say. May want to call Bass Pro and ask them.
Make sure the tension knob isn't super tight. That can put too much pressure on the side plate and prevent it from turning.

Quick question: for the parts of the reel that you don't soak in the Ardent cleaning solution tub thing, do you just spray the reel with cleaner and scrub it clean? Thanks and awesome video!!!
Thank you! For the frame and side covers that I don't soak I either spray them with the cleaner or I just use a warm rag and wipe them down. Thanks for watching bud!

I have a bps megacast. model number mcx10hd. I cant get the side plate with the mag control to come off. It seems to be stuck or seized, is there some way to loosen it so I can take it apart?

I know this video is 6 years old but at the 11:09 mark when you go to grab the worm gear bearing, you flung the c-clip off the paper towel and not sure if it fell off the table or just slide out of camera view!

Thanks for posting. I have a couple of comments and a request, if you do not mind. Using the correct name for the parts makes the presenter sound more experienced. A reference to the reel schematic can provide with the proper name. Inside of many reels of same type, but different brands have the similar parts. Thus, if the exact schematic of the reel that one is working on is not available, the other schematics can be useful. The clip removed from the line winder guide is an “e” and not a “C” clip. A common mistake. The center (third) protrusion on the clip makes it like an “E”.
Lastly, I like your parts cleaner container with wire basket. Where one can obtain that? Thanks.
If you don't degrease the bearings in oranj peelz, would you clean them at all? Would you add any oil or grease?

What are those 2 springs called that you took off if you don't mind me asking, and what's the part they sit on if you don't mind me asking, everytime I put mine back together, one of those springs keeps falling out and I can hear it bouncing around inside. Can't even reel anymore cause I think that spring gets caught in the gears. Keeps falling out, Thanks great video by the way

@@TackleJunky81 alright bro thank you, yeah I have the piscifun phantom, and there great reels, but this particular one I don't know what's going on, yeah I'm having a problem with that one yoke spring but just fixed it, but something is loud and I don't know what it is, the best way I can describe the sound is it sounds like those little toy hot wheel cars being pushed down concrete, it almost sounds identical to that, only happens when I cast it, and the moment I mess with the brakes and tention knob I'll cast it and I won't hear it, , Then the very next cast I hear it again, it's loud, do you know what might be causing this sound when I cast?

Hello I'm trying to clean a 93 BPS reel and the pin that keeps the bearing in place won't come out of the spool is stuck any ideas on how to remove I have tried to tap lightly with sm.hammer no luck? help please
William Novota A light tap probably won't do it. Those pins fit really snug. Your best bet is a spool pin pliers

Do you ever take the bearing out of the spool and clean in degreaser? I've seen you replace them on bocca bearing upgrades, but I don't think I've seen you degrease them for the cleaning videos.
+john schlesselman The spool bearings won't have grease in them. For the bearing on the spool shaft I just spray it with ardent reel clean and then blow it out with light air.
I love to see a detailed tear down of a tatula ct before I buy one lol..most content out there sucks , not as detailed as what you do..

So I have a question, How do you de grease the main one way bearing? I can't seem to get it out of the reel. did you use the de greaser on that bearing or just the ardent reel kleen? Thanks
They can be tough to get out, so normally I'll leave them in. I'll just soak the side plate in the ardent cleaner or just spray that bearing then blow it out with a compressor.
@@TackleJunky81 Awesome thanks! Another question, my Lew's Speed Spool Tournament Laser (7-8 year old reel) still feels smooth my after cleaning and re assembling it is still making a sort of rattling/rasping noise. is this gears or bearings making this noise and how would you suggest I fix it?

Would you recommend flushing and re-oiling/grease a brand new reel before taking it out for the first time. Heard that factories over grease their reels. Asking because I plan on getting a Concept C soon.
Yes, I've done that many times in the past. They way over grease from the factory just to get you over the warranty period. They will still work fine stock, but you can make them much better all cleaned up.

+TheSavageFisherman - Thanks man. No clue on that one. You really need to get that button pushed down. Are you sure on the model that you have, that you push a button or is there a pin that you can slide...like on the Pro Qualifier there's a pin that you slide plus the BPS symbol but you slide the pin.

Usually I let the bearings soak while I'm cleaning the frame of the reel (say around 5-10 minutes) and then I'll vibrate them for a minute or two. Now spool bearings will only have oil so you really don't have to soak them, just vibrate them. If you choose to de-grease the other bearings it really depends on how much grease is packed up in them...some I've had to vibrate a couple of times. Eventually I'll look into an actual ultrasonic machine to do it all for me.

+Jose M. Rivera You don't have to, but its the right way to do it. Yes, you need to use grease. I do in these videos, make sure to grease gears and oil bearings.

Where can I buy a claw part for my Johnny Morris baitcaster
TJ81, these are great vids. I really got a lot from these. Can you suggest any comparable reels that BPro currently sells that you would recommend? The RCX10SD has been discontinued. I like the drag of the one that was cleaned. Once again great vids.
Hey bud, the Pro Qualifier is an excellent choice. It retails for $100 but you can normally get them on sale for like $70. It's a smaller profile reel compared to the Clunn, but has the same drag setup. If you want to spend a few extra bucks you can't go wrong with the Johnny Morris Signature Series. I have a bunch of them and it is by far my favorite reel. It was actually a $259.00 reel at one time but when the economy went down the crapper Johnny Morris lowered the price to $159.00...and it's a steel at that price. I still normally wait for sales and you can pick them up for $139.99. Same drag setup in that reel, except instead of the paper type drag washers they're carbon fiber. Hey Jake, I said that in my Pro Qualifier cleaning vids. It's something I do, just because I can make them smoother than how they come from the factory. They're just loaded with so much unnecessary grease. If you just bought these reels and are not familiar with taking one apart, I wouldn't suggest doing it just yet. Use the reel for the season, enjoy it and clean it up next winter. I LOVE the Morris reels and you won't be disappointed with them how they come from the factory...super smooth!

Do you have a link to the tools you are using? Screwdrivers look pretty cool and seem to fit better than what I have.

TJ81, great video. I've been using Quantum Hot Sauce exclusively for my maintenance but would like to start using the Shimano Grease, per your recommendation. Can you tell me the exact name of the grease that you use? Online searching revealed Shimano made Star Drag Grease and a Dura Ace. Thanks!

Jacob Krueger The stock bearings are fine and you don't have to degrease them like I did. They are greased because most people won't maintain them. Spool bearings are oiled, never greased. You can upgrade those if you'd like.
TackleJunky81 ok thanks. I was just wondering though if it really made a difference to oil the stock bearings vs leaving the grease in them. I know it isn't required I was just wondering if it would be smoother to oil the stock bearings or is that only really for upgraded bearings?
Jacob Krueger The reel has a much better over all feel to it when you oil the bearings instead of grease, but once you degrease them you'll always have to maintain them.
Yep, most Less I have have all just been oiled from them. They are about to start selling their oil that comes in the box when you buy a stand alone reel from them. Depending on how long you have had it and how much use is when to do it. As long as your comfortable doing it it won't hurt, just make sure not to drown them in oil.
on my shimano chronarch 200e7 i couldnt get the main gear out
TJ81, based on your experience with reels can you summarize what you look for in a good quality reel? I'm thinking comments on the type of drag systems, the placement of bearing in the reel and any other advice you could give me. My collection right now is the JMX100D (~10-12yrs old, not to impressed with these), Curado 200D (~5-7yrs, like these) and Citica 200E (~5yrs, used to like but in time these get to be noisy). Am in the process of updating but thought I would get your input. I'm looking for longevity, i.e., something that when properly taken care of will stand the test of time. In addition, I'd like to comment that when I clean my reels I use the ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor freight, it's compact and easy to use. Seems to do a adequate job. The cleaner I use in the US cleaner is KrudKutter.
I'm a big fan of Bass Pro Shops reels. I have 20 of their baitcasters and have never had any problems with them at all. The Pro Qualifier would be comparable to the Citica and if you liked it then you would love the Pro Qualifier. The Johnny Morris, which is my favorite, can be compared to your Curado. With proper maintenance these reels should last you a long time. A lot of mine are 5-6 years old and are actually smoother now than they were when I first bought them, due to my cleaning and lubing. Of course there's many different reels that BPS offers, but dual breaking is an option that I really like and that's why I stick with the Rick Clunn (which are now discontinued), Pro Qualifiers and the Johnny Morris. A lot of it is just how they feel in your hand as well. I'm not downing the Curado's at all, I'm sure it's a great reel, but I've held them many times and they never felt right to me. For that reason alone I would always put it back and get another Morris. Don't let the store brand fool you. BPS makes some quality reels.
Great videos! Thanks for posting the series. Shimano North America Fishing posted a video with a Shimano tech servicing a Citica. He stated not to lube the anti reverse bearing and sleeve, or it could slip. My Shimano reels all come dry. My Abu Garcia's are "overly" greased. I see you degrease and lightly oil those rollers. Do you think that is reel specific? Thoughts?
I've never had any issues with a light oil so that's what I continue to do. Not sure if it's a brand thing or not...just what I've had good luck with.
@@TackleJunky81I recently had shoulder surgery and have three months to service all my gear while I'm rehabing. So, thanks to your vids, I'm trying this technique with a couple of Citicas and a few Abu Garcia Revo SX's. We'll see what happens. If I like the performance, I'll do my Curado's and Quantum Smoke's. If I don't like the performance, I can always pump them full of grease. Thanks again!

After dropping my Abu Garcia Hank Parker signature reel in a pond I decided to re grease it and clean it up.
Well now I can't get the drag to work. And it's very noisy.
It's basically the same components as yours, just different spots.
Can you help me fix my reel?
I learnt how to throw with this reel and I absolutely love it! I thought about sending it back to the manufacturer, bit I'd like to fix it myself.

And could you use a hairdryer instead of a air compressor
Your BassPro shop reel is identical to the Abu Garcia SilverMax and the BlackMax.
Yup, I'm sure its very similar to many others as well.
I don't have the balls to attempt this, video or not. I would never get it back together and by the slim chance that I did, it would not work as intended. Good job.
