Love Dr. Neal! I wish he could come give a presentation on nutrition to my nursing school! I think this would be so helpful for nurses and doctors to hear and incorporate into patient care. It's time to do away with that old-fashioned way of thinking and move forward!

Dr Barnard's recommendations, advice and explanations are excellent - there is a lot of dubious, ill conceived and wrong advice with regards to health / nutritional and dietary information etc being touted, promoted by others...
My father had me when nearly 50 , spoke 3 languages , kept mentally and physically active and ate and drank everything in moderation of good quality.
At 77 he left to work with my older Stepsister in an Orphanage in Burma ( Mayanmar) for 4yrs. He passed away peacefully at 93 yrs old.
Nothing but respect for this Doctor and regards to the Host of the Exam Room.

I worry about myself, I’m 68, I will be reviewing your info and making lists of things I should be eating. Thank you for your information.

Before all the current processed oils, what did people use for fat in their cooking, and what affect did it have on their health? Are there any scientific studies from the 3 most recent centuries that address these questions? And how do you explain the diets of countless countries that embrace and liberally use coconut and palm oils that live long, healthy, active lives? There serms to be some key missing information that screams for more diverse research.

@@Debra_Hasatheory one doesn’t need that much protein. Most Americans are getting twice what they need! The only reason one would not get enough protein on a plant-exclusive diet is if one ate a substantial number of calories from oils (which are pure fat and devoid of protein) or fruits (which have protein, but a smaller percentage of their calories is from protein). If one eats a balanced diet, with a variety of veggies, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, as one is supposed to, one will get the optimal amount of protein and a good balance of essential amino acids.

You damage the cruciferous when cooked because you damage the enzymes that create sulforaphane in broccoli and similar sulfur compounds in the other cruciferous veggies. Sulforaphane is great for brain health and inflammation.

Have been listening to diet regimes for at least 40 years and the number of various diets was about 15 so not one worked long term because we would all be using it now. . I tried exercise and eating more veg but three weeks and I lost only 1kg. So I went back to how we must have lived as cavemen. Grubbing around for food growing in the ground, picking berries , nuts off the bush when in season and them things hanging in the trees. The odd steak when the men managed to kill a bison. We didn’t drink milk, just plain old fashioned water. Oil, well that definitely came later. But we were busy up and down all day too. And here we are hearing just what is being recommended by Dr Barnard. So I have followed his advice and 1kg in one week. Just brilliant. Thank you, I feel really really healthy. Best advice by far.

Please go on a keto diet.
So long as you keep your carbs low fat is healthy. Your growth hormones naturally burns excessive fat. However this hormones can’t burn fat while you have spiking levels of insulin. To keep your blood insulin low reduce your carb intake. That’s why the whole idea of being a vegan is a recipe for disaster!

I'm American living in Italy for 50 years. When I hear about the mediteranean diet it gives me pause. Yes, my friends in the hill town where I live eat lots of fruit and vege, usually coming from their own land, yes our fat comes from our own olive trees but......their main food (the 3 P's pasta, pane, pizza) all come from overly processed wheat AND poor quality wheat (easy to grow, easy to process). Mediterranean diet also encompasses French, Spanish and Greek cuisine . Personally, l rarely eat pasta , bread and don't like pizza . I was also surprised by how frequently fries / chips that the French and Spanish serve in restaurants.
If you choose the best of what all the Mediterranean countries offer then it is a very good diet.

I tried vegan diet and then a vegetarian and eventually I got weak and tired. I was still eating some processed foods. I gave up processed foods and that helped my weight, a tad etc but I was eating real foods, lots of veggies mostly little meat but I was always hungry.
Presently I am eating no processed foods but all natural meats, fats and eggs and low carb veggies, essentially keto and wildly my back pain went away. My weight is back to the same weight as when I was 20. When I swerve off low carb, the pain returns. I only buy humanely raised meat, which is actually good for the environment. This is only a n-1 experiment but this is what happens in my body. I hope this post isn't taken down because I think it's important for people to hear the perspectives just like I'm listening to this guy, because we always have things to learn.
One thing I have learned is that epidemiological studies, in a test of epidemiological studies, were found to be incorrect 80% of the time.
This doc seems like a nice guy but I hear lots of smart people out there who respectfully disagree. It seems to be working for a lot of people though, so that's great.

While coconut oil is harmful, Coconut flesh appears to be neutral. Not healthy, but neutral. I buy coconut butter, then pour out the oil that’s collected on top (and use it as a moisturizer). This way it is reduced in fat and what remains is concentrated coconut pulp, which is more flavorful.

1 cup of very wet cooked lentils
optional - Half a peeled lime
optional - Half a peeled avocado
optional - any spices or herbs you think would taste good with it.
Blend until blended. It's ice cold, a smoothie, and chili. I make it mainly during the summer, when it's just to darned hot to be cooking and eating hot chili.

In India, the Alzheimer’s disease is almost absent. They attribute that to daily consumption of turmeric (one of the curry spices). Recent studies, as per Nutrition Facts Organization, have shown even reversal of cognitive decline when people consumed half a tea-spoon of turmeric a day (this is not seen with curcumin extract, only seen with the whole spice)

About vitamin E, chili powder has, calorie for calorie, double the vitamin E of sunflower seeds. (Sunflower seeds are the richest source, I think, of vitamin E in the nuts/seeds.) All the vitamin E you need in a day (remember it's a fat soluble vitamin so it is stored) is found in just 1/3 cup of chili powder. And in a chili, it's REALLY easy to eat that much chili powder in a single sitting. It's one of the reasons chili is one of my favorite things to eat;)

A lot of vegans like myself listen to your show. The first 10 minutes were the most helpful 10 minutes I have ever heard in your broadcast and programming. I've actually gained weight eating vegan. But I've been over indulging in foods that have coconut fat as the replacement in ice cream and butters and cookies and such. I wondered why I was gaining so much weight. My doctor had told me I was obese. What I've just learned was helpful indeed.

and fasting (not eating after 8pm),
2 meals a day and drinking green tea & water with fresh lemon all-day . I make blueberry/banana smoothie everyday.
Home cooked meals always with turmeric, garlic and onions.
I enjoy working out for 30 min., gardening and playing with our dog.
Now I feel better and less achy in my joints. I am a retired RN and proud to say not having to take any maintenance medication. Thanks to God.

I used to eat like you and so did my mom. We ate what I call vegan junk/processed food. We ate with oil too. She had a major stroke last October ‘21. She had minor ones prior to becoming vegan. Now we eat a Whole
Foods plant based diet, oil free. She’s recuperating from the stroke. She’s 72 yrs old and had a lot of artherosclerosis, from all the pork and chicken and beef that we ate for years. We eat very simple, a shake or oatmeal in the morning, rice and beans and veggies in the afternoon, and root veggies and a huge salad at night. She eats 6 servings of leafy greens Per day, steamed. I eat greens with breakfast lunch and dinner. I snack on fruits.

I’ve been feeding my mom an oil free, WFPD since she was discharged to home in
December ‘21 and she’s healing. She had developed pressure sores on her foot, in the facility. I was told they would never heal, but they did. I’ve been doing this for 6 weeks, went from 207 lbs to 189 (5’8” height). My blood pressure dropped from 155/80 to 101/60. I was just walking in the morning and now I have the energy to jog and I’m lifting weights again.

@@mariaespiritu9512 So long as you keep your carbs low fat is healthy. Your growth hormones naturally burns excessive fat. However this hormones can’t burn fat while you have spiking levels of insulin. To keep your blood insulin low reduce your carb intake. That’s why the whole idea of being a vegan is a recipe for disaster! As a matter of fact the brain is made up of nearly 60% fat and prefers to burning fat for fuel rather than carbs . You may wanna reconsider and place your mom on a keto diet.

I took some terrible advice from a friend a few years ago. He said research said that coconut oil is very good for the brain. So I used it in everything including a morning coffee. I attribute clogged arteries and a heart attack partially to its use and to my elderly fathers heart and cognitive decline. It played a partial role because an animal diet played the other part. Also in my culture vegetarianism was practiced but people died from typical North American diseases (diabetes, heart disease, dementia, obesity) at the usual age. Their diet is vegetables but also much butter, diary products, oils, processed white flour, eggs, sugar.

This is a question! I've been living in Italy for 50 years and now on a farm near a small hill village. I have a vege. garden and my local friends who have been here for generations. We have our own olive oil. My diet consists of fresh fruit and vege (usually pesticide free). Ihave my own chickens.
I'm 78 yearsold and just started experiencing rather severe (?) Memory loss and feeling physically unbalanced. My big bad part is sugar! Home made, low sugar content but sugar. Any comments?
